  • Discouraging on a number of levels. Beaten by essentially a one man ( pretty good player ) team. Same problems manifest themselves but corrective actions are either not forthcoming or are ineffective. Needed this game very badly - now DU has to figure out how to steal TWO games down the road to make up for PSU and Bobby Mo. Even though the A-10 is not doing as well as I expected DU has to figure a way to be 10-3 or 9-4 ( minimum) in the non-conference portion of the schedule.   • I'm not gonna disagree that our FT shooting is a problem. But I don't know how it can be blamed on Bill Clark, the only player on our team who shoots them consistently. TJ has a good percentage as well, but it's a bit limited of a sample. I'd level the criticism at those who hardly ever make a FT, not the guy who scored 19 points but also happened to miss a couple of 1 and 1 opportunities.   • We lost because we missed too many 3-point shots, we made a couple bad passes at critical times, and we missed some FTs. Very happy with the effort; team played hard for 40 minutes. Could've used Andre tonight, but got some good minutes out of Peggau. Saunders and Clark were great, BJ was good, we needed one more to step up big. This was another game where we missed Eric Evans.     • ED, respect your opinion greatly, and you were there, so maybe I'm wrong, but we were 14-31 from 3, which is a phenomenal percentage. Damian and BJ were 7-10. That won't happen again. And I'm not sure what you saw out of Peggau, either. He's awful on defense, commits too many easy fouls and is way out of control on offense. I feel the game slipped away right after BJ was hurt and missed several minutes, and Rod was forced to be in there.   Random thoughts ...
  
  We need a big man, yadda yadda yadda. Yeah, no $#!+. We got beat up by a big man with a big body BUT we didn't use the one tool that we have effectively. Saunders spent a lot of time defensively outside the paint. Not sure if it had to do with his coverage assignment, his ankle, or what, but for the past three years Damian has competed well against opposing big men. We have photos of him dunking over 7-footers, etc. Damian had a couple shots blocked and didn't seem to have his normal explosiveness. So the point again is not what we don't have, but what we have not working. Not that we don't need to add some height in the future, of course, but we still have to play games now.
  
  As much as I like BJ and Damian, they kill the team when they start launching threes and when they don't hit FTs. Neither has three point range and both are needed in the paint to help with our woeful lack of offensive rebounding.
  
  Billy Clark is the MVP of the team so far this year. He plays with such intensity and shows so much leadership. I had concerns at the end of last year but he has stepped up way beyond even the most reasonable expectations.
  
  TJ is better than I thought. He had a couple steals and rebounds that were all about court awareness and anticipation. Oddly, he was the only Duquesne player who received any criticism (and I mean that in a constructive sense) from the announcers last night. "He needed to penetrate further." "He needed to go stronger to the hoop." Stuff like that. I hope TJ gets a recording of the game because it can help his learning process. PS, his shot is reminiscent of BB Flenory. BB, by the way, was one of the best shooters I've seen at Duquesne.
  
  Peggau was largely invisible despite his PT. I missed Andre Marhold last night. I would have thought he could've added some toughness up front for us.
  
  Joel Wright and Jerry Jones looked like freshmen. That's OK; they were playing against the #3 team in the nation, in front of a large crowd, in a nationally-televised game.
  
  Mike Talley impresses the heck out of me. I like his quickness and his cool.
  
  Overall, I liked our toughness and our grit. Team never quit, kept fighting back, and kept hustling and working hard until the end. The spurt to start the second half was all about coaching - everyone wants to knock Ron Everhart because he hasn't produced a miracle yet, but no one gives him credit when it's due.
  
  Finally, despite losing to a team that could win the NCAA tournament, I see weeping and gnashing of teeth. Not a single positive word since last night.
  
  I am not a person who takes losing well, and I ing hate-hate-hate Pitt. But I'm also an educated and intelligent human being who realizes that we were pitted (pun intended) against one of the best teams in the nation last evening. For about half the game, we held our own. Now we need to put together the other half so we can win games against high calibre teams.
  
  And yes, we still have some deficiencies, but I don't think anyone can gameplan based on what they don't have. Let's get the best out of what we do have.
  
  I look forward to seeing everyone in Happy Valley.

  • Here's the key - the big man has to be big strong and fast. And he has to be able to play on the back end of the press. Otherwise he ain't getting off the bench. And that's the rub.   After watching the Pitt game its goes without saying again that we need some size and some bulk inside. Ala McGhee? Some factors we need to consider and of course some of these already have been thrown around. Yes we are at a disadvantage to a lot of the BCS/bigger schools since they eat up all the stud bigmen. The remaining pool of big men are slower and although can bang probably don’t fit our system of run and gun with pressure defense. I am not defending RE for his style nor am I trying to suggest we change just looking for some ideas or comments on this area? We took a chance on Mike Williams and he didn’t work out here or in Kentucky but he certainly had the bulk inside factor going.
  
  How much is Martin going to help us in this area next year? Should he be given a program of weight increase and less of a running situation? Or should he be asked to hit the weights and the protein shakes in conjunction with his running/conditioning? Is our new JUCO Center going to be the banger ( assuming he passes clearing house and actually signs )
  
  Can we win consistently without a true bruiser center or will a D-Mart type still work? I think Shawn James fits the mold here also. I predict that PF will be Martin’s position next year. Hope he can hit some free throws. Guess that topic has been discussed enough said.
  
  We can’t always relay on a TJ to come around that will commit in his Soph or Junior year.
  So can us back seat quarterbacks come up with a list of possibilities or reasonable ways to secure some big guys? Easier said then done for sure especially for the Duquesne Dukes not DUKE! One way would be to bring in a raw big man and redshirt him the first year just like Martin to get in into the system so he can hopefully make the adjustment.
  
  I am not going to say we won’t struggle with teams this year with bulky size inside because we will. Rebounding is going to be a big negative for this team, but certainly PITT was one of the best we are going to see along those lines. What does the future hold for the frontcourt?

  • I think every once in a while a coach that recruits as hard as RE is going to find the right fit, be in Frosh or JUCO. When that doesn't happen, you have to find the guy who fits your mold the best. This would seem to be a 6'9" guy who can run and jump. All other skills are teachable, at least to a point.   • The good news is the A-10 is a guard league therefore you can get away without a "bruiser" and still win in conference play. St. bonnie is a great example...their center is a solid player and plays REAL well in A10 play however that kid can't complete night in and night out in the Big East. D.   • Regarding big men : For the near term you almost have to hope that Rod P, Joel W and Andre M. develop and are factors especially during A-10 play. As for D-Mart none of us really know what to expect - he is a true "Wild Card". This DU team will struggle to rebound vs. most teams due to the "Spread the floor and fire the 3" offensive game plan and the "Chase and try and create chaos" defensive game plan. Not saying that style won't work, just that it does not lead to being an effective rebounding team. They just have to hold their own on the boards and not get wiped out.   If the free throw shooting doesn't improve significantly, I have a tough time seeing us going above .500 in A-10 play. We're going to lose games we should win against middle of the pack teams all year largely because of our abysmal free throw shooting. Right now it's our fatal flaw.   1. I thought the crew did an excellent job. I agree with the fact that they are disorganized, but at least they showed up in force. Palumbo would be unstoppable if that many students showed up. I just hope that the CREW can find a way to convince more students to show up for the other important games we play. I do think the CREW should try to come up with some unique traditions before games. A modified Mossie cheer would be one of my choices.
  
  2. Speaking of Palumbo, what does everyone think of Consol as our home venue? I noticed the curtain system in place for future games. I thought the arena was incredibly nice, but I'm curious how it will function during a much smaller attendance for a Dukes game. For instance, will all the food vendors still open, and will the crowd be large enough to generate some noise? My friend who is a Pitt grad said to me last night "This place is almost too big. I can't even hear the other side of the court. Hopefully it's better with a one sided crowd.
  
  3. I loved the new mascot we debuted. I was entertained by the dance off between the Duke and the Panther. I know it is simple, but having a real mascot makes us seem more like a real college program. It's definitely a step up from someone wearing a suit and top hat.
  
  4. I sure as hell hope this new recruit can rebound. That's all I have to say. I cannot find ANYTHING about this kid on the internet. I find that disturbing and stressful.
  
  5. I predicted a 16 point loss, and we lost by 14. I thought the Dukes kept trying, but they are obviously too small to compete with huge teams like Pitt.
  
  6. My friend mentioned that Pitt over recruited and might have to release a player from a schollie. Any chance they get rid of Malcolm Gulbert and send him our way?

  9. The following games against WVU and Penn State really set the stage for the rest of the season. We MUST get hot and start a streak of wins heading into the A10. The A10 is weak so we have a decent shot IMO.

  • Pitt presents a very bad match-up for DU ( the worst we'll see all year ). For DU to win, the team must ( 1 ) Have an incredible shooting nite from 3 pt. range against a very good defensive team. Rhody hit 14 I believe and still came up short. ( 2 ) Minimize the rebounding differential - Pitt will really hammer the glass, especially on their offensive boards ( 3 ) and as you say DU must protect the ball. Pitt will force the action with a man-man . They are very deep and talented and if you allow them to get easy baskets in the transition game the task of beating them is next to impossible.     • Abdul, very good thoughts. I am extremely concerned about the rebounding; you just can't give Pitt (or any team) too many second chances. We gave up 18 offensive rebounds to both RMU and UMBC; 11 to BG. If Pitt grabs over 15 offensive rebounds, it will be tough for the Dukes to keep it close (regardless of how well they shoot or take care of the ball). In addition to having Peggau/Wright/Marhold stepping up and grabbing a few rebounds, we are going to need BJ and Sean to really crash the boards and not cheat down the court.   I did notice that you can find this information for the Dukes away games, but only through the box scores posted on the opponent's athletic web site (both RMU and Bowling Green). It looks like other teams are providing a standard package that includes a "Play Analysis" that highlights these stats (also sometimes includes a "Newspaper Box Score".
