Subject: Opening with a D-2 Opponent

As you know, we got stuck playing a D-2 opponent for our home opener. It was reported the reason for this was that St. Francis dropped us at a late date from their schedule creating an opening that we could not fill with a Division 1 opponent. (Although, if I recall, the Dukes knew about St. Francis early this summer.) Saint Louis is the only other A-10 school that has a D-2 school on their schedule (although it's not their home opener).

When I took a look at scores from around the country this past weekend, I noticed that about 60 other Division 1 teams opened at home with a D-2 or D-3 opponent. Here's a sampling of some of the teams that opened with a D-2 school - Hofstra, Winthrop, Radford, High Point, Akron, Army, Liberty, Marshall, Savannah St., Delaware St., North Carolina Central, etc. I would have thought that all of these teams would be looking for a D-1 game, but it seems to be more important to them to open up the season at home.

It looks to me the Dukes had 3 choices: 1) open up at home with a D-2 opponent; 2) open up at home with a D-1 opponent by paying the opponent to come into Palumbo - another buy game; or 3) starting with an away game with an opponent who gives you a home game next year.

What are your thoughts on the scheduling options? What would you have done as the Dukes coach/AD?

I have no issue with them playing a D2 to open the season. Would have liked a low level D1 team, but as you stated, St Frank dropped out. THe Dukes have theior hands full starting Friday(RMU, Pitt, PSU, WVU, GMas, GrnBay) (NT) -- Seen on Miltenberger St, Monday, November 15, 05:47:26pm
We also were going to play Portland but the deal fell through. Given the circumstance I would have gone with the D2 school as well. Switching gears, a friend of mine asked if TJ could be the next Bill Zoph. I thought about that, and although freshman were not eligible back then, and Bill was left handed, in one respect his hustle, leadership, and drive to win could be a comparison.   - BTW, and some of you older guys would know this better than me, but I've been thinking about who Billy Clark reminds me of, and the guy I keep coming back to is Mike Rice. Billy's taller, stronger and more athletic, but he plays taller than his actual height, brings the tough on every play, and shoots the ball well. Rice went on to a coaching career ...   - I have no problem with SFU. They're local and someone we should beat every year. I agree with Bilgy as they fit nicely into the early season schedule. I don't mind going to Loretto every other year. Same with Robert Morris. (NT) -- VBC, Tuesday, November 16, 06:58:40pm

      - I thought that both Greg & Ron understood the local angle & agreed to play SFU home & home. Looking at SFU's non-conf home games (Drexel, Bucknell and Colgate this year), the Dukes would usually be the highest ranked team to go into Stokes every other year. It seemed to be good for SFU and a nice gesture on the Dukes' part. I think SFU was looking for a big check from Duquesne rather than a return visit. And with the late date cancellation or ultimatum from SFU, I don't think the Dukes wanted to pay another 300+ RPI team to come here (already have Northwestern St. and Norfolk St.). DU should try to get on this ESPN 24 hr thing next year, everyone watches this, first games of the year, I heard updates of the RMU game today at work, from Pitt fans. WE should be playing RMU on this day next year, late night/early morning, get the campus fired up early in the year for a national tv game, vs good rival, rather than a D2 or St Frank or UBMC (NT) -- Seen on Miltenberger St, Tuesday, November 16, 10:00:45pm

  - Technically it was under the 24 hour hoops marathon, IIRC. SD St and Gonzaga played a CBE game last night as part of it. To be on ESPN, we'd either have to be a road team like LaSalle this year in the mid-afternoon or play a home game at 8 or 10 AM. At least we had practice at that with the Fordham game last year, lol.       - The city is only going to get excited when X, UD, and Temple come to town. This is the result of 30 years of BE juggernauts coming to town. Those three are seen as BE type schools, so the city will pay attention when they come, provided we have a competitive team.
