• Another big night for T.J. -- WashpaRick, Tuesday, July 20, 11:00:39pm
  He had 20 plus pts. and a bunch of rebounds and assists not to mention 4 blocks. Jones was around 20 with 3 or 4 three pointers. Looks like he can shoot a little. Evans might have been close to 20 also with a bunch of nice drives but had his hands full with Gibbs who scored a bunch. Montiero had about a dozen and Marhold had 3 dunks and a free throw. T.J. going against Gibbs in the championship tomorrow.

  • Nice to see Marhold back on the court. Tomorrow should be a war between TJ & Gibbs. In the last game Ashton schooled TJ in the first half but McConnell may have actually outplayed him in the 2nd half. Maybe now we find out if he learned anything defensively.         • There is no way that they AREN'T on the floor together for large chunks of time. Evans is going to play as many (or at least close to) minutes that he did last year and TJ is going to see lots of time as well. That necessarily means that you will see Evans at the 1, and TJ at the 2. Whether that means TJ starts or not, doesn't matter...I do believe that both will finish games.           • Invariably at the end of the game ( last 3 minutes or so ) someone is leading and holding the ball a bit and someone is chasing and fouling. It is imperative if you are leading to have multiple ball handlers on the floor at that time. If TJ and EE excel in this area, along with foul shooting, all the better for DU.           • I don't totally disagree with you. I think he WILL be, but I'm not sure he is YET. Evans has played very well and the PG job is his to lose. As for BJ vs TJ at the 2, I think the lineup with BJ and Peggau (or Martin if he does well) makes us better due to size. There is a certain benefit in having someone of TJ's ability and energy coming off your bench, so ideally BJ and Peggau would play well enough to start and play major minutes, and you'd have TJ giving a lift off the bench.   • Is anybody else amazed how well TJ has rebounded this summer? I would guess some of this is a funtion of just summer ball, but still very impressive and tells you a lot about his hustle and desire. He has to be a candidate for MVP the way he has played.     • Having seen TJ play at least 4 games at the end of the season, including the WPIAL and PIAA plyoffs, I was always impressed with his ability to rebound. Keep in mind that a good number of those rbs. were under the board where he had to do battle with an opponent. He just seems to have an ability to be around the ball & get to it in a hurry. I'm not sure if I'm surprised about his rebounding in the summer league. I would more likely say that I am delighted that he has been able to display that talent against a much higher level of competiton than he saw at the high school level. I usually pick one week out of the season and follow the team for each game that week.           • While admittedly the Dukes' playing Penn State will not carry the stature of an opponent such as Duke, Villanova (who owes us a home game from way back, as I recall) or Ohio St., I view it as a positive step in improving the Dukes' non-conference schedule. Even though PS is not a b-ball power in the Big 10, the addtion of a team to the schedule from a conference that has an RPI rating higher than the A-10's, is generally an improvement over playing a team from a conference with an historically low RPI rating, such as the NEC.               • I was aware of Penn State's lower RPI from last year. I don't believe that PS will always be at the bottom of the Big 10. My point is that Penn State makes a more natural opponent than any of the schools you mentioned, perhaps with the exception of Bobby Mo. (Didn't the Dukes with a .500 record have a higher RPI than NCAA Tournament participant Bobby Mo?) Furthermore, Penn State will out draw any of those teams when the Dukes play them at home.                 • DU final RPI was 114 - so slightly better than RMU ( 129 ). If the goal is to max-out the RPI effective scheduling of upper level teams in lower conferences is usually preferable to bottom teams in power conferences. If the goal is to draw fans PSU is the call over Fairfield ( i.e. ) no doubt. Have a hard time seeing PSU elevate to the upper levels of the Big-10 in the next 2 years. Questionable, at least to me, is if they can elevate to the middle of the Big-10 standings. I suspect Indiana ( equally poor in 2009-10 ) has a good chance to rebound faster than PSU.                   • Your theory of scheduling assumes that one can predict that certain teams, some of which you mentioned, from conferences with low RPI ratings will have equal or better RPIs than they had in the previous season. I believe that one must schedule at least some teams from conferences with RPIs better than the A-10. Frankly playing at least one Big 10 team a year can't be all that bad.                     • Predicting which teams in the lower conferences will have "Helpful" RPI ratings ( within a certain range ) would seem to me to be somewhat easier than trying to predict the major conferences ( bottom feeders ) teams RPI's. Remember that 25% of your RPI is based on your opponents / opponents. To predict accurately in either scenario ( bottom of Big 10 vs. power team of a lower echelon league ) is very difficult. As I said, schedule PSU as some benefits will accrue, but do so with the understanding of where we hope DU is in the "Success cycle" that PSU will probably not benefit your RPI.   I really like what we have seen this summer from TJ, JJ and Talley. Ron has addressed a couple of our needs in getting back up at the point and hopefully some outside shooters. The biggest issue, rebounding and interior defense is still a big concern. Hopefully Martin will be qualified and provide some help. Hopefully Rod will be healthy and give us some good minutes like he did in the first half of the Pitt game last year. I am concerned however that we have not addressed our biggest need of getting a quality big body to help out on the glass. I am sure Ron is still working hard to try to get some help, but I would think the chances at this late date of getting somebody good are slim. From this perspective (inside play) we are not much different than we were from last years team. Still despite our rebounding issues we were in most games that we played. The games we lost for the most part we either ran out of gas resulting in our inability to execute, or we just did not make our free throws. I think we can improve on last year by taking better care of the ball (reducing turn overs), improving at the FT line, and doing a better job of making our shots. This is where I think the new guys will help. Regrettably, I think we are going to struggle rebounding, and defending the better big men like Nicholson.

• I'm going to take this to a separate thread and probably get myself in hot water but IMHO there is a much bigger picture here than some realize. -- TMH, Wednesday, July 14, 04:28:37pm
  Again this is only my opinion but I suspect that the mission statement for Father Daugherty and the rest of the Administration has nothing to do with basketball. For most posters, a successful team is the end game but for the Administration it is the means to an end.
  The real end game is turning Duquesne into a first class educational institution. There are rating services that some how decide this. Many of the criteria involves the selectivity of the student body (valedictorians, top 10%, 25% SAT etc.) Like it or not, Duquesne remains a regional institution. I suspect the vast majority of the students are from W. PA, E. Ohio and WV. The problem is that many of today's graduates want to stray from home so in order to get the # of aplicant up, Duquesne has realized that they need to get their name out nationally. There are several ways to do this. The Administration has chosen the Xavier model and even hired GA from there to implement it. The thought process is that basketball (in this case) will bring national recognition, perhaps pay for itself and more and stimulate alumni excitement (and their pocketbooks), a win, win, win situation.
  The problem is that Duquesne lost a generation of fans (much as wrestling did at Lehigh, my alma mater. Coupled wth a down stock market and Build It and They Shall Come dis not apply. The Administration decided to double down on basketball and needed to eliminate 4 sports to do it. It is a very risky gamble because you alienate a segment of alumni when you do that.
  I have a lot more to say on the issue but as a true outsider, I'll stop here.

  • Actually, most of what you posted is correct with one likely exception. Unless things have changed, DU draws more students from Eastern Pa. than from eastern Ohio. When I was a student, I knew one guy from Ohio, but I knew dozens upon dozens of students from Philly and the surrounding area. NY, NJ, and the DC area were also well represented.             • TMH, the Alumni Relations department has done a very good job of scheduling events around Duquesne basketball games. I know several people who have attended their events during the A-10 tourney in Atlantic City. In addition, Alumni Relations has held events in Philly, DC, Cincinnati, etc. tied around BB games in those areas. In fact, I think I recall that they had an event in Chicago for the women's NIT game against Northwestern last year.   • Another issue is the amount of media coverage. Consider radio, TV and print coverage of the men's basketball and it is considerably more than other parts of DU including academics. I don't think that DU should sacrifice academics for BB but GA was right in dropping 4 sports to secure more money for BB. By fielding a competitive team that wins more than it loses projects a positive can-do image of the school rather than embarrassing home loses against the likes of Mt. St. Mary and Ark. PIne Bluff.   • I respect many of you opinions expressed, but US News and World Report ranks Duquesne as a Tier 1 National University.   1.)There was some discussion earlier about this being Saunder's and Clark's team. I hope it is true but they need to take ownership of it right now. Ownership is not given, it's earned. That means that they need to make themselves better as well as their team mates. The true crisis of last year's edition is that no one stepped up into that role.
  2.)T.J. McConnell-When I began singing his praises after his junior year...the critics responded that all he can do is shoot.When he scored 42 points without the benefit of a 3 in the first game of his senior year against Seton LaSalle...the critics responded that it was against a weak 2A team. When TJ scored 38 the following game against a fairly good 4A team in USC...the critics responded that the WPIAL was really weak this year.When he took his show to San Diego for the Surf & Slam tournament and smashed the 19 year scoring record including 36 against the #1 team in Ohio....the critics said that it wasn't like playing against intercity Philly, NYC or DC teams. When he scored 32 with 12 boards and 5 steals against the best team in Philly (#2 in the nation)....the critics responded that he won't be able to do that against college players. Now that he is proving himself in the summer league against our own players as well as Pitt and RMU...the critics are saying wait until he plays A-10 competition. I think it's now time to stop being a critic and just sit back and enjoy the ride.
  3.)There was some talk about our guards being too short to play defense. If I'm not mistaken, the A-10 defensive player of the year was under-sized for his position. What he lacked in height, he more than made up for with quick hands and feet,pure instinct and a nose for the ball.Hmmm..if we can only find a guard with those qualities. While I'm at it..let him be able to shoot and pass a little too. :-)

  They are almost exactly the same size. Bj's game seems more geared to the inside. He doesn't shoot the ball particularly well (about 50% from the FT) but can score inside and had a reputation for rebounding and blocking shots in HS. Bill on the other hand would be moved to the more natural #3 position where shooting and ball handling is more critical which are his forte. If there is no real difference in positions though, the point is likely moot.

  Evans, Montiero, Talley and T.J. played. Evans prob. had 20 plus. Lot of nice drives. B.J. had to play against the bigs but he did ok but missed 2 fts while down 1 with 3 seconds left. I was there last night and he did make some treys but to just judge him on one game that you werent at is absurd.   • Just scanned the Pitt board and saw that EE had 20 pts, 8 boards and 8 assists. BJ had 17 pts and 10 rebounds (along with his FT misses at the end of the game). TJ had 15 on 6-12 shooting, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. CLK, I got a different meaning on Gil Brown's quote - I took it as he was referring to Gibbs having the shooting ability and getting the screens / opportunities, and that TJ was schooled in the first half (16 points for Gibbs/2 for TJ); that TJ came back in the second half and played him even up.
