Subject: Right, this is challenging as increased visibility, profile and the other intangibles that athletics bring is difficult to quantify but bean counters love these kinds of questions.
In reply to: ztown 's message, "While it would obviously be challenging, some doctoral accounting student should step up and write a thesis on the actual $ value that these students bring to a university. I certainly enjoy college athletics but as a purely financial investment, in terms of raising the visibility and profile of an institution, are they actually worth it? Obviously, there is a big difference in the value of a starter and a tackling dummy but I wonder how often the individual is worth the money paid in terms of tuition, room and board, training resources, "stipends", etc." on Wednesday, September 22, 11:23:55am

Simply put, does the investment of over $100,000 into each scholarship athlete and facilities pay off or could a university do the same thing through academic investment and slick advertising? I suppose it is a mix of all of the above but I really don’t know, that’s why I’m asking. As pointed out, the calculus is different for each sport and institution. Again, I enjoy being a spectator and reaped some benefits as a walk-on athlete during my days on the bluff but I think it poses an interesting question. While somebody else figures this out, I'll be cheering on my Dukes and seeing that other school in the 'Burgh get embarassed on national TV tonight.
