Subject: Students Saved Duquesne

Someone gave me the most recent Duquesne Magazine yesterday. There was an article about how the University was going bankrupt and Father MacInalty allowed students to raise over a million dollars to help the University. That was 40 years ago. I remember that we did not know if the employees we were going to be paid, let alone still have a job. There were rumors that the University Treasurer, a Mr. Erft, was going shut the University down. The article pointed out a fact I did not know, that when Pitt changed to a State school, they lowered tuition and made it hard for Duquesne to compete with them for local students. That fact is one of the things that caused the financial crisis at Duquesne. I think it was Chancellor Litchfield that broke Pitt. To this day, I thank all of those students that went out and solicited donationations to save Duquesne. Way to go!
