  • Curb the abuse or else (that's how I read it....) -- Dai Rob, 17:40:41 01/14/05 Fri (glfd-cache-9.server.ntli.net/62.252.0.12)
Can I suggest that everyone who is thinking of supporting Ebbw on Saturday please read the article found on the Sporting Wales website. We (everyone) cannot afford to act in anyway that causes the club to lose anymore points especially when the players have worked their socks off to get into a respectable league position..

    ----- ----- -----

Due to widespread concern within the WRU and the Welsh Society of Rugby Union Referees regarding the levels and nature of abuse aimed at match officials, the WRU today launched a campaign to try to tackle this growing problem.

This season alone, there have already been 30 instances where the WRU's Code of Conduct with regards to the abuse of referees has been invoked from the Premier Division to Division 5 with on-field offences including 13 cases of verbal abuse and a case of physical abuse while off-the field offences include cases of verbal abuse by coaches, officials and spectators...

...WRU General Manager Steve Lewis said, "In October 2004, the Director of Match Officials wrote to all clubs and organisations highlighting once again that referees were being subjected to abuse. Originally we referred to 'an unacceptable level of abuse', but we have now adopted a zero tolerance approach and regard any abuse as unacceptable.

"The WRU Board of Directors fully supports our stance on this matter as this is having a detrimental effect on the recruitment and retention of referees. It is incumbent on all clubs and organisations to ensure that matches are played in a safe environment and to that end all involved in the game - players, club officials and spectators - should adhere to the WRU Code of Conduct. Failure to do so will result in severe sanctions being imposed on any club or organisation."

WRU Director of Match Officials Robert Yeman added, "The WRU is determined to rid the game of unacceptable behaviour aimed towards match officials. With no match able to be played without a qualified referee officiating, there are serious consequences to the game as a whole when referees decide to hang up the whistle. It means that for every referee lost to the game, there is a void of at least 20 games that cannot always be filled. More often than not, this affects the lifeblood of the game - youth and lower level matches"

The campaign involves clubs and organisations being asked to display two posters outlining the importance of respecting match officials in a prominent place in their clubhouse and asking them to enforce the Code of Conduct by getting the message across to their players, coaches, officials and supporters. Many clubs have already shown their support for the initiative.

Oh - one more thing - COME ON EBB, It's a home game and you're gonna get our full backing on the bank..

  • Vs Ponty -- CJ, 23:41:36 01/16/05 Sun (dial81-131-93-174.in-addr.btopenworld.com/81.131.93.174)
Somebody mentioned below that ponty were poor, and limited opposition. This i think is a bit harsh.

They looked to play good rugby, despite the conditions, and did look threatning.

On the other hand i dont feel that they would have beaten us had we remained with 15 men on the field.

Bens sending off may of been a bit harsh, but if you are following the law, it was the correct decision.

If we break the rules, we should be punished, and our discipline has left a lot to be desired of late. But there are still two sides on the field. Bens second yellow should actually have been a penalty to us not them, meaning we would have stayed at 15. And as someone has mentioned below, they were quilty of several offenses in a row, and not even a warning was given. If a referee is going to be strict, thats fair enough. As long as this is consistent with both sides.

He did miss a lot. I dont think a lineout went in straight all game, for both us and ponty and he didnt spot any.

As for us, the break definately didnt do us any favours. We have had a bad couple of weeks, point deductions, early cup exits etc. but we need to pick ourselves up and get on with it. As for Jason i dont think we should have put him on at all. watching after the game he did seem to be limping slightly.

Anyway...lets hope this game is going ahead on friday, and lets all get down there and cheer the boys on, and give the ref some constructive criticism not abuse.

Ponty were a good side ,but we didnt look up for it.If Ben is leaving we certaily need someone else as it is impossible to get any moves going from a scrum retreating as quickly as ours did .The body language of our players was poor as soon as we started to leak points.Think Jason needs to be on from the start of games.

  • A rest is not always a good thing! -- AD, 09:30:58 01/16/05 Sun (NoHost/83.217.171.200)
The rest didn't do as much good. Poor tactical kicking, a couple of missed tackles and the dismissal were part of the story, but I think that Ponty are a reasonable side: in the first-half they finished poorly - not so in the second.

Nevertheless, there was a period in the second half where another Ebbw score would have made it very hard for Ponty. Having said that I didn't feel that we were working as a team in the way we have before Christmas, but I am sure that the lessons will be learned for the next match. We have to keep our cool and security will be ours.

  • Ineligible player -- CK, 11:03:40 01/13/05 Thu (host213-122-77-168.in-addr.btopenworld.com/213.122.77.168)
West Ham played an ineligible player in the FA cup a few years ago.
The FA found them guilty of this and they got to replay their match. They didn't get thrown out like we seem to have been.
    Whats the difference ??!!
(Yes I do know that one is rugby and one is not but you see where I'm coming from with this)

IS there any news on how chunky is yet. I as i bet all other fans are worried about the lad.

Would be nice to get an official line off the club on the issue, or have they forgotten about him?

Anyway, would be greatful for any input.........

  • Training -- Graham, 20:40:25 01/13/05 Thu (ebbwvale.plus.com/80.229.160.12)

Lots of eager looking players in training tonight. I don't think that any of these off the field issues have affected the players. If anything (with any luck) it may well have motivated them.

Some more good news is that the living legend that we know as Chunky was down the ground tonight having a physio session. At least he's out of hospital and on the mend.

The team for Saturday will no doubt be posted on the main site as soon as Rob gets it, but it looks as if it will be something like....

    15. Danno
    14. Scotty
    13. Kris
    12. Handsome
    11. Bev
    10. Byron
    9. Scotty
    1. Lee
    2. Chris
    3. Ben
    4. Bulldog
    5. Richard
    6. Griffin
    7. Scu
    8. Manu

That's how it looks, but we will wait for official confirmation from the main man (Rob).

Come on Ebbw, we had the chance to beat these at Sardis Road. Let's set the record straight.

Let's get down the ground and get behind the Vale.

    Referee James Jones
    TJ1 Steve Davies
    TJ2 Paul Richards

I've heard a version of the cup debacle from another point of view tonight (someone who was a lot closer to events than we were), and all I can say is that I hope the Secretary of Brecon RFC has to visit his doctor every day for the rest of his life with itchy bits.

Whoever is responsible for this cup fiasco should be shot.

I thought we could make it far this year. Semi's at least.

But the player we fielded supposedly breaking the rules is only an 19/19 year old boy. And appart from this he is useless. have seen him play in the past. completely gutless. I didnt see the game in question and therfore cant comment on his performance then.

He is Cheys nephew, and there may be a bit of blurred vision on his capabilities.

Lets hope the WRU rules in our favour for a change and lets us stay on.

On another not, are we stupid allowing Coutts to go on loan to sale. Losing him could lead to our demise. This is sheer stupidity. I agree that we cannot stop his progress by not allowing his career to advance, but if we do allow hime to go we must get a very good price for him to allow us to find good quality cover.

  • Sorry if I seem to be hogging the board tonight, but... -- Graham (again), 22:59:43 01/13/05 Thu (ebbwvale.plus.com/80.229.160.12)

The Pontypridd team has also been announced. There is a report on their squad in the link below. They have included a permit player (get it checked Ebbw) who is a lock from New Zealand. 6ft 7in tall and 18 stone in weight. He starts on the bench, but will probably come on at some stage. They are led by Dale MacIntosh. Now he doesn't worry me too much, but their number 8 does. It's Dan Godfrey again (remember, he played hell with us down there).

  • Monthly VP draw -- Graham, 22:35:38 01/13/05 Thu (ebbwvale.plus.com/80.229.160.12)

I don't wish to sound as if I'm criticising anyone, as I know how busy things have been at the club this season, BUT...

Can someone from the club please let us know when we are going to get the monthly VP draws sorted out? I know I put extra money into the club in the form of a VP ticket this season as I knew the club needed any extra resources they could get their hands on at the time no matter how little, but if these monthly draws were part of the package, is there any chance of having the draws sorted.

If you need a hand with it, just give me a copy of the list with the names of the VP holders on it. I'll do the draw at home and let you know who won, and I will be very happy to accept the winnings.

    Not a crtiticism, just a question/request.
