  Donald Trump is shopping the Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants to various television networks against the possibility that CBS is going to end its long-running relationship with the franchise.
  
  The network has been the broadcast home of the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants since 1972 and of Miss Teen USA since '83. Its most recent, five-year contract to air the trophy shows ends this year. Sources at other networks say Trump has approached them about buying the broadcast rights to the pageants; one executive says the networks have been told that CBS is going to pass on the franchise.
  
  Trump, who bought the pageants' parent company, the Miss Universe Organization, from Madison Square Garden in November of 1996, acknowledged yesterday that he was talking to other networks, but denied that CBS had declined to strike a new deal to continue broadcasting the pageants.
  
  "We had a five-year deal that expires in August," Trump said yesterday. "At the end of five years I can go re-price it with other networks. I wanted the right, after a five-year period, to shop it for market value. I think it's very strong."
  
  He can't be referring to the ratings, which have been slowly sliding for many years. Miss Universe, which back in '74 attracted more than 35 million viewers, last May suffered a worst-ever viewer average of 8.3 million. Miss USA drew nearly 30 million viewers in '74, but a worst-ever 7.6 million this past March. Miss Teen USA, which had 20 million viewers in 1984, averaged just under 8 million last August, though that was better than 2000's average of about 7 million.
  
  Those ratings slides occurred despite efforts to update the aging franchise, including the addition of music acts, quirky hosts such as William Shatner, and interview and Internet elements to the broadcasts. CBS declined to comment on its plans for the pageants, saying through a spokeswoman that it is "planning to broadcast 'Miss Universe' in May and 'Miss Teen USA' in August, and further plans for the pageant won't be announced until later."

  Being that I am majoring in fashion design, I just love to watch Miss Universe and see the different styles and gowns. I know it's a little late to be posting my opinions on the top 10 and my own personal top 12, but here it is anyway..
  
  1st off..
  
  1. Spain- An absolutely gorgeous girl with a killer body. In my opinion she had one of the, if not THE, best bodies in the entire competition. Some said she didn't seem to care how she looked or walked when she was on stage, but that wasn't the impression I got at all. I thought her movements and attitude were just very simple and innocent during swimsuit, similar to Miss Spain 99. During eg she seemed very sure and full of sex-appeal. Though her gown was somewhat unique for a pageant, I loved it! She wore it very well and it grabbed your attention. It was very daring and stylish. I felt she should have made top 5.
  
  2. Venezuela- Don't get me wrong. I usually adore the delegates from Venezuela! But I was very dissapointed in their rep. this year. I felt Eva lacked the spark and charm that usually sets Miss Venezuelas above their opponents. Even her face ans smile seemed lackluster. In swimsuit, she looked great from the front and really had the catwalk down. But when she turned around, I was stunned. I personally felt that her behind needed a little more toning. As rude as this sounds, I thought it looked saggy and somewhat distasteful. Not the normal body of a typical Miss V. In eg, I was even more let down. Yes, the gown is nice, but in my mind, only for a smaller scale pageant. I'm used to Miss V. blowing me away in eg (ie. 00,97,96,94,92, 90)I thought she looked a little out of place, too casual. Again, nice walk, bad image. I think she should have reversed her sf and prelim decisions. In answering her questions, I thought her lack of spark really showed. I thought she seemed very dull. Nothing she said impressed me. I didn't think she deserved a spot in the top 5.
  
  3. Nigeria- Beautiful face and charming expressions. But in my humble opinion, not top 10 material. Her ss presentation was lackluster, to me. Her body wasn't all that great and her stance was way too casual. In eg, I thought she looked VERY tacky and outdated. The top of the gown didn't even fit her and all the fake jewelry didn't do her justice. For a sf spot, I would have replaced her with Miss Angola.
  
  4. Israel- Another pretty face, but that's it. She had one of the worst bodies in ss. I have nothing against short delegates, but she looked stocky and her hips/thighs were a little too large. In eg, from the neck up she was stunning. But from the neck down she was way, way too casual. The black dress was nice, but not Miss Universe evening gown material. I don't think she deserved a place in the top 10.
  
  5. Greece- WOW! She blew me away. Not necesarily the prettiest face, but everything else made up for it. In ss, she had one of the best bodies and THE BEST cat walk. She really knew how to work the stage and her stance was great. I thought she deserved 1st in ss. In eg, she was fabulous. That gown was very chic and stylish. And once again, she knew exactly how to work every movement of the gown. She truly exemplified the "model-look". In the interviews, I wasn't really impressed. It was obviously due to her lack of english, but she was repetitive and seemed to stumble. I did appreciate her sincerity, though. I don't think she deserved the crown, but top 5 was deffinately where she needed to be.
  
  6. India- Another dissapointment for me. Obviously, not another Lara, Madhu, or Manpreet. In ss, she looked like a "Miss Teen India". Her body was too greased up and not impressive at all. Her height really hurt her, in my eyes. Plus, I found it uncomfortable to watch her battle with those shoes. In eg, she looked tacky and cheap. The gown was TOO MUCH. Not the usual simplicity and elegance that most indian delegates have had. In her questions, I thought she sounded like she was trying desperately to sound "mature and eloquent", but couldn't pull it off. Overall, she pailed in comparison to other Miss Indias. I didn't even think she deserved a spot in the top 10.
  
  7. Russia- In all honesty, she did impress me, but in the end was obviously out of place. She had a gorgeous face. Very mysterious looks and capturing eyes. She actually reminded me of a european Delta Burke (lol). She had incredible stage presence. She knew exactly how to walk and gave the audience/judges very sexy looks. In ss, her body was nice, but her stance was what hurt her. In eg, the gown was obviously outdated, but I give her snaps because she worked it to the best of her potential. Didn't deserve top 10, but I still liked her.
  
  8. USA- A great girl who truly deserved her success. In ss, she had a very nice tanned and toned body. She had a very reserved stage presence and seemed sweet and humble. At points during ss, she reminded me of Misty Giles, Miss TX Teen USA 99. I was actually dissapointed in her eg. I LOVED her prelim choice. It was incredibly elegant and simply breath-taking. Her sf choice was nice, but I felt a little too simple. In her interviews, she really impressed me. Kandace was very quick, witty, and showed her intelligence, (eventhough I thought the toursit remark was a bit off-the-wall lol) Overall, I deffinately thought she deserved a high placing. Kandace was great.
  
  9. France- 1st off, a very pretty face. From the neck up she was a doll. But after that, what in the world was she doing in the top 10? In ss, she had a nice tan and her body was ok, but not impressive. Her obvious down point, was her right arm. It was very uncomfortable to watch. Her eg was probably the tackiest on stage. The material, the fit...nothing worked. Eventhough I thought she was very sweet and nice, she had no business being in the top 10.
  
  10. Puerto Rico- And finally the home-town girl. In my opinion, the best Miss Puerto Rico, since Desiree Lowry. Denise had a gorgeous face and INCREDIBLE stage persence. If Miss Greece had the best cat walk, then Miss P.R. had the best overall stage presence. In ss, I agree that Denise could have used a little more color, a better tan. But her body was very nice, not the best, but very nice. And she really knew how to work the stage. In eg, she was THE BEST. I have never seen a lady with such sex appeal, stage presence, etc. in eg. Her gown was absolutely gorgeous, and from the looks she gave to the stances she took, she was #1 in eg. Her 1st answer was great. Very well said. She stumbled just a bit in her final answer, but she was still one of the best. In the end, the crown deffinately belonged to her.
  
  In the end, I felt that the following delegates made top 10 due to political/media reasons...
  1. Nigeria
  2. Israel
  3. Russia
  4. France
  
  My own top 12,( I still prefer 12), was..
  1. Spain
  2. Venezuela
  3. Netherlands
  4. Switzerland
  5. Greece
  6. Ireland
  7. Colombia
  8. Canada
  9. Mexico
  10. USA
  11. Antigua & Barbuda
  12. Puerto Rico

  I see many pictures posted that I'm sure have a copyright on them by the photographer. Do the moms have a release? Fines are in the $100.000.00 range for a one-time infringement.
  Basically you're stealing from the photographer if you post or copy the work without the photographers knowledge.
  If you intend to play dumb and say you didn't know, the law says the photographer gets X2 the fine.
  You better play it smart because photographers are getting lawyers left and right nowadays because of this stealing of work. Just because you have the picture doesn't mean you can do whatever you want with it.
  Most photographer are more than willing to grant a release, all you have to do is ask.
  
  Webmasters are also accountable for copyright infringements.
  
  We are seeking damages from one person for 20+ pictures on a personal web site. This person can lose everything they own, (house, cars, business, etc…) for ignoring us and thinking they could just steal our work. Be smart ask first!

  To the person who blasted the Mrs. US pageant here are some suprising facts about problems and lawsuits with another MAJOR system for married women that everyone seems to have forgotten. It has had its share of "dirty laundry". They lost a great bit of credibitily and sponsors in 1989 when they moved to RUSSIA to hold the Mrs. America pageant---that made NO SENSE at all!!! The 1990 Mrs. America Jill Scott filed a lawsuit against David Marmel, it was a scandel on all major tv news shows back then and therefore had her titled taken from her that year. She claimed she had to sell her crown and prizes cause she made no money as the winner of the Mrs. America pageant and also for some personal reasons against David Marmel. If you have a program book, they do not list a winner from 1990. THere were issues taken up with contestants back in 1987 when Pamela Nail won the title, and several other years in between, including a lawsuit filed by contestants recently in the mid 1990's when a major league baseball player's wife came in as 1st runner-up (I think she was from Michigan) and was under the assumption that she would be the new Mrs. America by default when the Mrs. America for that year would assume the title of MRS. WORLD (since there was no pageant for Mrs. WOrld at the time). A Mrs. WORLD was NEVER crowned that year (for obvious reasons) and so she never assumed the title. If she would have---there would have been repurcussions. Also, over the years, former Mrs. America's have competed for other national titles (included are Mrs.America 1984 who tried for the title of Mrs. US Globe a few years back. I have had friends who have competed at the state level over the past 15 years who come back with their share of stories and nightmares over the years. Don't mean to bring up so much trash--but when I see sore losers complaining about one system over another---they only need to realize that there is no such thing as a perfect world, or a perfect pageant (Like Mrs. Utopia write)for if and when there is--please let me know---I'd be first in line!!!

  I'm sorry to announce that there will never be a PERFECT PAGEANT. SOMEONE WILL always find things to complain about--the food, long rehearsals, the interviews, the on-stage questions, the Top 10, the Winner, who's in the FRONT for the opening number, the music, the sashes, the appearances, the schedule changes, the show, ......etc. Not everyone can be satisfied. Accept it and enjoy the pageants (including Mrs. United States pageant) for what it is and nothing more---nothing less. Please ladies, put pageantry in the proper perspective!!!

  • Miss Universe 1990 was a bit unique. After the parade of nations, Dick Clark made an announcement about them picking the costume that best represents that countrys culture. And then went on to announce the winner as Miss Colombia. There was no 1st or 2nd runner up in 1990. The top 10 where also called out in their national costumes which was cool .   a very reliable source at CBS tells me that this will be the LAST telecast of Miss Teen USA in August. As a matter of fact, Trump and CBS have mutually agreed to dump these contests and their telecasts. The ratings have been terrible and they just have no interest in pursuing them any further. There will be no telecast of Miss USA & Miss Universe in 2002. All you girls that want to be seen on TV, better try another source. These pageants are GONE!

I am involved with pageants, and I use this to help me get money...all I do is sign up for "spam mail" at this website...each one i read, i get $.05, for each friend i sign up who reads the "spam mail" i get $.03. It takes a while to get started...but I have been doing this for 2 weeks now, and have made close to $50!!! They have already sent me $25, and my next one is in the mail (they send out the money every $25 earned) If you don't wanna get spam mail on your account...just go to hotmail and open an account just for this...check it once a week...its really worth the short amount of time you'll spend on it!!!

  I know that this message may not be relevant to most of you but I am posting it here to warn any person about this. Hope that all of you will not mind that I am using up a bit of space in this message board.
  
  I was cheated by a person called Angelito M. Comia (e-mail address angelcomia@hotmail.com), commonly called himself as Angel about close to US$300 by promising to sell me 11 pageant tapes but never delivered it. He stayed in Pasig City, Philippines and have requested me to deposit themoney into his account in Bank of Philippines Island Family Bank (BPI) first before sending me the tapes.
  
  He posted a message more than a year ago in Pageant Central Message Board mentioning that he has Miss Universe 1966 to 2000 and wanted to look for any buyers. I e-mailed with him and agreed on our deal and deposited all the money in his bank account. However, I never recieved any tapes. After that, he started to be unfriendly (even though he did yell before earlier when I took some time to deposit my money into his bank account) and claimed that he had sent the tape. However when I asked him for the receipt, he claimed that he also lost it. Who will believe him? After that, he hardly replied my e-mail and even make-up stories that he is in hospital and others. He said he will send me another set of tapes but I never recieved them too. After more than one year until now, I still haven't recieve my tapes.
  
  Pageant fans, please do not be cheated by him if you are intending to purchase tapes from him (even though it may be easy for him to use another name or info). Thank you.

I will try to pay after I get the tape in future (but the seller must also trust me enough to give me the tapes first before getting the money) or I will try pay 50% first and 50% after getting the tapes.   No no no, she is NOT a rare beauty, and though everyone can see that, she is more than that, she might have undergone 4 surgeries so far, but as well as Brazil, those sacrifices have well paid off, she is the host country, and former Miss Universe: Dayanara Torres will be at the judge panel to make sure this lovely face gets its due. also with a body of a...Well uh, let's no talk about her body, just that is good enough, bottom line.
  
  Miss Spain.
  She is a shoe in for this competition, there is no really words to describe her beauty, she might not have much up there, but hey! she's got the look!
  
  So what you guys think, aren't they gorgeous?

It's nice to see there is still humour behind all the bashing, etc. Anyway, I think the "Miss Philippines" (LOL), even though she looks like a Vietnamese farmer, is the only one who looks half decent from the rest. And, yes, they are a powerhouse because they have consistently sent great delegates through out the years....the '90's and the 80's was just not their year in MU and MW.   Dear friends,
  
  I'm a brazilian pageant fan and - why not to say
  that? - really my country's lover! Because of that, I would like to tell
  you the following story about the new girl who will be our representative
  in Puerto Rico, next May, competing at Miss Universe 2001.
  
  Juliana Borges, 22 years old, 1,80m (her legs = 1,20m), just after winning
  the Miss Rio Grande do Sul State's contest, decided to submit herself to
  some plastic surgeries to increase her appearance that was not suficient to
  win any other title. She was hardly oriented by her coordinator in that
  State, who calls himself as a "missologist". He told her she should make
  all the corrections she was needing to become a good contestant for the
  2001 Miss Brazil pageant.
  
  And they both took the decision for the surgeries. After three months
  Juliana had done 19 surgeries, including lipo-aspiration on almost all her
  body and silicone in her breasts to make them a lot bigger.
  
  19 surgeries!! Don't be so surprised yet, wait for the upcoming
  information!
  
  After being submited to all those surgeries, Juliana and her coordinator,
  who seems to be a not very honest guy (people say his past actions
  include maybe prostitution's arrangements for beauty queens) went immediatly to the television's sets and newspapers agencies to announce that she had done all those surgeries, what has caused an enormous scandal among our society.
  Their intention was clearly to call attention on her, in order she could be
  elected Miss Brazil and, may be, Miss Universe, not because of her beauty
  (se is not really beautiful, even after the surgeries!) but because of the
  scandal it could cause!
  
  
  And it caused a very big scandal! People in Brazil are shocked with her
  action! It seems that she won the title of Miss Brazil because the
  pageant's organizers have arranged the result by themselves, justly because
  they wanted to put the pageant on the newspapers (the Miss Brazil pageant
  has been geting down and down for many years).
  
  And it happened! Almost all the newspapers and TV programs have commented about her and her surgeries. But the commentaries - Oh, my God! - are the worst ones we have ever seen about a Miss Brazil winner!
  
  Pay attention to the principal newspapers titles about the pageant, some
  days after its realization:
  Jornal do Brazil, March 28 - "The silicone's victory!"
  Extra, March 28 - "Miss Bistouri is Miss Brazil"
  "And the banner goes to.... the bistouri!"
  O Globo, March 28 - "It's not possible to have real misses anymore!"
  Correio Braziliense, March 30 - "As 19 surgerires to become Miss Brazil were not too much, Juliana Borges, 22 years old, is now prepairing herself for the 20th one (How terrible it is!). Now, the false sexy girl is going to arranje her
  buttocks. She wants to be absolutely complet for the Miss Universe title."
  Magazine "Isto É", April 4 - - SILICONE AND NAFTALINA - MISS BRAZIL PAGEANT MAINTAINS THE 50's STYLE, BUT THE WINNER IS USING SILICONE AND WAS SUBMITED TO MANY PLASTIC SURGERIES"
  
  Magazine "Veja", December 13, 2000 - "Misses' Factory"
  
  And now, pay attention to this Magazine "Veja" article:
  "There will be one day that the pageant's organizers will give two banners:
  one to the most perfect woman and another to the best plastic surgeon.
  Nobody will be surprised at that time, because of the methods that have
  been being utilized during some contestants' preparation. In Rio Grande do
  Sul, the State that had 7 winners of 53 Miss Brazil pageants already
  realized, the contestant Juliana Borges, 22 years old, green eyes, 1,80m
  tall, having legs of 1,20m, thinks that all of that is not enough to win
  the next editon's title of the pageant, that will be realized in March of
  2001. She is doing surgeries in many parts of her body. According to her
  doctor, Almir Moojen Nácul, of Porto Alegre, 16 surgeries are necessary.
  "Never one contestant accepted to change so many things", says prowdly
  Juliana's coordinator, Evandro Hazzy.
  When she was elected Miss Rio Grande do Sul, in October of this year,
  Juliana was just thinking about correcting her breasts and lips. During her
  first talk with Dr. Nácul, his coordinator and the doctor made a bigger
  list of itens.
  During the following days, Hazzy defended the surgeries again. He pointed
  out that she didn't need to pay for anything, only for the silicone. Done
  together, all the operations cost around R$ 15.000, "I have an agreement
  with Dr. Nácul", explains the coordinator. "He operates the misses'
  surgeries without any charge". Hazzy wants to create a misses' factory in
  Rio Grande do Sul.
  According to the model Karen Kohler, 20 years old, who also receives from
  Hazzy orientation about her carreer, the doctor wins in midia publicity
  instead of charging directly for the surgical "increasements".
  Instead of paying for the service, the beauty queen must appear on
  newspapers and television talking about Nácul. The doctor says its not
  absolutely true. "I dont't charge for my personal service, that's all".
  Brazilian medical entities condemn arrangements between professionals and
  patients for the service's payment.
  The plastic surgeon Célio José de Oliveira, from the city of Contagem, has
  been prepairing contestants for the pageants in 6 years. "I began with
  Renata Bessa, who was Miss Minas Gerais State's contestant", says Oliveira.
  "When she won, in 1995, we won together with her, because we became being
  known among the contestants".
  The Medical Ethic Code prohibits clearly that one professional gives his
  services as an award in any competition. Mr Luiz Carlos Celi Garcia, the
  President of Brazilian Plastic Surgery's Society, said that it's
  necessary to have a formal Medicine Regional Counsel's process to analyse
  that kind of medical fault."
  
  So, it's an enormous scandal in Brazil, not because of the plastic
  surgeries only, but principally because of THE NUMBER OF PLASTIC SURGERIES WERE DONE ON HER and also BECAUSE OF THE MEDICAL ETHIC INVOLVED IN THE CASE.
  
  And that unreasobable girl is going to represent us in Miss Universe 2001!
  It's terrible, horrible, unconsionable!
  
  The brazilian society can't understand and believe that! After many years
  without hearing anything about the Miss Brazil contest, we hear that
  absurd! She has been called as "Miss Frankstein"! In some ocasions people
  thought she was a "drag queen"! She has now an unbelievable aspect! Better
  not having the pageant anymore!
  
  The Internet site "Terra" - address: www.terra.com.be/exclusivo, has interviewed lots of people in Brazil. The main opinion (more than 90%) hate her UNCONSIONABLE NUMBER OF SURGERIES and that her image may represent the beauty of the brazilian woman!
  
  Please, forgive our country for that! It's not our people's fault! Believe,
  besides being not a responsible girl, she was oriented by very, very
  unblushing people! WHAT A TERRIBLE COMBINATION!"

  I've seen all the Miss Teen USA Pageants since 1990. I didn't start taping them, though until 1998,(but I do have 93 and 94 on tape too). I remember most of them perfectly, except for 1991. So my question to all you "experienced pageant watchers" out there is, how was the 91 pageant? Who really deserved to win? Who looked best in gown or swimsuit? Who's interview really blew the judges away? Or who really blew the final question? I'd love to hear opinions, just so I could get an idea of what happened at Miss Teen USA 10 years ago :-) thank you!

  It's time we all did something about this . . . . after reading the Joel Stein article in TIME Magazine, I am really angry with the Miss Universe people. I feel certain that the finalists who appeared on the Miss USA Pageant telecast are NOT the ones who were actually judged highest by the prelim panel.
  
  We need to take action - call Joel Stein's office at (212) 627-0222 and please, very courteously, ask him to investigate this further. He is in a position where maybe he CAN get to the bottom of this farce. Ask Mr. Stein to see if he can get statements from the other preliminary judges, in addition to a court order to release all scores from the preliminaries and the finals.
  
  There is absolutely NO WAY the ten who were on the show are the actual ten . . . . I don't buy it and you don't buy it. We need to do something NOW to help make sure Trump and CBS don't run this pageant into the ground.
  
  Please be concise when you call Mr. Stein. Simply state your message and leave it at that. Do not rant and rave about things he will have no knowledge of, or interest in hearing. Keep your call professional and simple.
  
  There is one other thing that perhaps none of us has considered. He may have been a Donald Trump "plant" --- purposely asked to write an article, good or bad, about the experience. After all, at least it's publicity, something the company rarely gets. And, by adding the 'would you sleep with Donald Trump' comment in the story, the Donald's ego is pumped up. Who gives a dam* about the 51 contestants as long as Donald is happy! Something to consider. (I would not mention this possibility to Stein when you call - LOL).
  
  The company holds a dress rehearsal early in the day on the day of the live show, at which time I believe they make their final choices for which girls will be put in the finals. North Dakota didn't want to win but they tried her out at the dress rehearsal; likely they were afraid she would SAY she did not want to win on the show that evening so she was cut from the group. Oregon's mother has a terminal disease; other states were chosen to be among the top ten based on favoritism of the state pageant directors. And I believe the company had pre-chosen Missouri to win, but when she froze up there was no way a win could be justified. These are just my own theories, but based on what I've been hearing from other people I am not alone. Stein can maybe help. Interviews with the other preliminary judges, a court order, and a full investigation as to WHY two CBS employees would ALSO be invited to judge on the preliminary panel. Answers to these questions would at least be a start.

  Anyone present at the "Eye on Fashion" show at the Hilton Kingston Hotel in Jamaica will readily agree that Leilani McConney, Miss Barbados 2000/2001, stole the hearts of those who were in attendance. Her vibrant personality coupled with her effervescent charm as she modelled each outfit on stage, made her an instant crowed favorite.
  
  Leilani, who is 19years old ,now has her eyes set on representing her country at the 2001 Miss Universe Pageant to be held in Puerto Rico later this year.
  
  Her stage appearance and modelling ability could easily land her on the catwalks of either Milan, Paris, or New York. However for Leilani, her love for figures has gotten the better part of her,and so she has opted to study Banking and International Finance in Switzerland.
  "Although I've won this beauty contest and have done a few modelling assignments, I have not given modelling any serious thought,as I was always interested in Banking,"said Leilani,shortly after the show.
  
  Leilani comes from a family of former beauty queens and fashion designers. The gown she wore in the Miss World 2000 pageant and on the runway of Saturday nights show could be aptly described as a "family affair".
  
  It was a sequined white gown encrusted at the bodice and hem with see shells her father collected along the beach near her home. Her father designed her gown, while her aunt,Marina Whorme created it. The tiara that accompanied the gown was worn by her cousin ,Miss Barbados 1984.
  Befor rushing off to the "The Queens Party"in the Jonkanoo Lounge,Leilani, noted that Jamaica is a beautiful country and that there are similarities between her homeland and here.

  Straight guys don't watch beauty pageants. That's because pageants take a
  normal pastime--ranking women by how they look in bathing suits--and turn it
  into something boring, with dance numbers. Plus, all the contestants are
  teenagers who look like 40-year-old anchorwomen and talk a lot about Jesus.
  You don't have to deal with that by the pool at the Delano.
  
  Though I could not imagine what good could come to our union from pitting one
  state against another, when the Miss USA pageant invited me to be a judge, my
  enormous ego would not let me turn it down. But before I left, I set two
  ethical ground rules: I would not acquiesce to the misogyny in any way; and
  if I slept with a contestant, I would vote for her in at least one category.
  
  The experience was not quite as glamorous as I had hoped. Last Friday's
  Donald Trump-run pageant took place in Gary, Ind., which meant it was short
  on the sophistication of Atlantic City and long on a really disturbing smell.
  Even worse, a new rule, designed to cut down on breast-augmentation surgery,
  allowed padding in the bikinis and dresses. It also turned out that I had
  been invited to judge the preliminaries, which meant that instead of sitting
  with Karen Duffy, Daniel Baldwin and Ernie (the black Ghostbuster) Hudson at
  Friday's live telecast of the finals, I spent three days early in the week
  with Joel from Survivor, an executive from the CBS soap-opera division and
  Eddie and JoBo, Chicago's Bumpin' B96 morning team, whittling the contestants
  down to 10 semifinalists.
  
  We spent the first two days interviewing the contestants for the personality
  third of the contest. We were able to ask them about anything except
  current-events questions because "these women have been in a bubble for two
  weeks." I'm guessing those bubbles had been forming for much longer. I never
  imagined I could be so bored talking to attractive women whose only goal was
  to impress me. I was mildly impressed by the fact that Miss Vermont had
  written several books, including True Beauty: A Sunny Face Means a Happy
  Heart, Betsy the Cow Goes to the Vermont State Beauty Pageant and What's All
  the Noise About Boys? I also marveled at the ingenuity of the contestants
  who, not allowed to go to a gym at night, tried to lose pounds by running up
  and down their hotel hallway. And I also discovered a uniformity in idol
  worship: when asked to list those they most admire, almost all named Oprah,
  God, Katie Couric and Julia Roberts, in that order.
  
  Toward the end of this portion, one contestant approached the panel and
  whispered, "Give me a low score. I don't want to be Miss USA. These people
  are all phonies." She said that her own bio was entirely fabricated, and that
  she couldn't quit the pageant because her sponsors would be angry. She was
  the only contestant I wanted to win, and even though I knew it would hurt
  her, I couldn't help giving her a 9.99.
  
  Friday night, I watched Miss Texas win, the woman who answered my "Would you
  sleep with Donald Trump?" question with the misinformed, "I think he's a
  little old for me." After it was over, the only thing I felt was that I'd
  wasted two valuable TV viewing hours, and that I was the only one who knew
  which state really won.

For those who are naive, the MUO pageants usually work like this: I think the 5 girls who scored high in the prelims are in the top 10, but the rest are chosen from top 20 or so...or at least that is how some judges said it worked!   I need of a copy of the Miss U.S.A. Pageant 2001 that was hosted by William Shatner. It was on at the same time that two other shows were on that I wanted to watch; and the person I asked to record it didn't have her act together, so she didn't tape it. Normally I would've let the pageant go; but as an avid trekker, I'd really like to see it because it was hosted by William Shatner. Does anyone have a copy that they can sell me?

  I really love Scott Grossman. In a way, he has become part of the "tradition" in the Miss Universe/USA/Teen USA Pageants. I really love seeing him. But has anyone noticed that he somehow looked different at this year's Miss USA Pageant? He looks A LOT more older, and less handsome-dashing looking than he used to in the past. I guess it happens to the best of us...
