I have in my possession a book called "Ships from Hell" which mentions the Ascot as sailing from Colombo to Freemantle via Diego Suarez on the 19/02/44.
I quote a chapter from the book, after I-37 surfaced.
"A shouted exchange took place in which one of the survivors shouted in reply to the usual questions of i.d that the Capt, CO, and Sparks were all dead.
As the sub edged even closer to the second group of survivors a warning rake of gunfire prompted Capt Travis to i.d himself in an attempt to prevent further slaughter.
Travis was taken aboard the sub with his CO Claude Blacket, although Blacket was soon dismissed and sent back to his lifecraft.
Nakagawa (subs Capt) erupted in temper slashing at Travis's hands with his sword and nudging him overboard.
There followed two hours of terror and carnage.
Ascot was shelled to a burning wreck, when i-37 moved away only eight survivors remained clinging to a liferaft."
