• Not sure what I'm going to do if Dr. Lee calls on Monday and wants her back up to the full dose again....I'm afraid if she continues the way she is right now, then I'm going to have to go against Dr. Lee's wishes and keep her on the 1/2 dose....Guess we'll wait and see how she does the next couple of days.....Wish us luck!!   • PS..I won't go against Dr. Lee's orders without really talking to her about it, but you know, if it means that her levels are out of whack, but she is happy...then to me I feel this is worth it...I just hate seeing her so miserable and acting so sick and unhappy..... • She may not be metabolizing the meds right so it's building up in her system. It's one of those things that in people we can tell the dsoc how we feel so they know to check levels but with our kids we just have to go by how we know them to be and we DO know these things. I'm glad she is feeling better. Did you say they took blood again and you will know Monday? What were her other labs numbers like? All in range?   • Yes, they took blood for a Thyroid T4 test yesterday...we should hear on Monday (providing the labs were open this weekend....and she thought they were...)I honestly don't know about her other levels for sure, but I'm pretty sure Dr. Lee said that everything else looked good, so I'm assuming she meant all were within range....I guess we'll wait and see what Dr. Lee says on Monday..but boy, like I said, she is doing so much better today, I hate to even think about putting her back on the full dose...I know if her thyroid levels aren't right that is bad for her..but gees, is it really worth it to have her levels "where they belong" and have her so ill and unhappy..?? Or to have the levels a "little off" one way or the other and have her feel better and be more like herself and happier? Know what I mean? (NT) -- Kate, 7:39:39 pm, Sat, 03/22/08
    • I know what you mean. When we treated Bogie's Cushings he wasn't himself. We don't use that chemo drug anymore. It's sometimes about quality of daily life oppsed to keeping them alive for years being miserable. Ask for a copy of the labs, I'd like to see what her liver and kidneys are doing.       • Thank you so much Denise for understanding what I'm trying to say....that is exactly how Rick and I feel...
        believe me, I want Maggie here forever, but since we both know that isn't going to happen....I want her life with me to be happy and comfortable....if that means cutting back on the pills which may in-turn shorten her lifespan a little, at least she will be happy and content....but if these meds lenghten her life but she is unhappy....well I just can't do that to her...I want her to be happy.....

    • Rick and I have really been watching her today, and we both agree, she is not as puffy today....yesterday she looked like a kitty on steriods..she was actually bloated....but today that is all gone and again, she looks more like herself in that respect also....plus when I picked her up today, I swear she is not as heavy as she was yesterday...and you know, even if that is water weight that can't be good for her either..no wonder she acted so uncomfortable...with that extra pressure on her heart and organs..it had to be hard for her to breathe or to find a comfortable spot to lay down......       • Kate, I understand where you're coming from in that you don't want to go against Dr. Lee's advice but since there's been such a dramatic change in Maggie (both downhill and then back to her normal self on the reduced dosage) I'd just make sure you talk with Dr. Lee and make sure she understands exactly where you're coming from. But.......and that's a big but.......ultimately, we have to do what we believe is right for our animals. If Maggie's looking better, acting better and is more like her old self on 1/2 the dose, then I wouldn't feel guilty about halving the dosage. An example: when I found that my thyroid was underactive, I was put on Synthroid. After getting the dosage regulated, I expected this huge "ZOOM" of energy. That never happened. Oh, sure, the medication took care of the other serious symptoms I was having but not in the way I expected. So do what *you* feel is right. You know Maggie better than anyone.         • Maggie wasn't quite as active today, but still looks and is acting like she is feeling better than she has when she was on the full dose of the meds....I'm really anxious to talk to Dr. Lee tomorrow....until then I can't make any kind of informed decision on what to do about her meds.....
          I know what you are saying about expecting/hoping to have a huge surge when you started your meds for your thyroid Sandy...but my main problem is Maggie was acting fine, eating fine and using the litter box just fine and playing and down right acting normal UNTIL we started the meds..it was then she started acting sick.....so really outside of the weight loss I don't think Dr. Lee would have even checked her thyoid....Maggie gave us absolutely no indication in her actions that there was anything wrong....           • So, honestly, I wasn't expecting any thing out of the ordinary for her on these meds...all I figured to be looking for and would happen was that she would start to gain weight again instead of losing it....I just didn't expect her to get to lethargic/and puffy, and to gain 1.1 lbs in a little over a week....like Rick said, that would be the equilivant of him gaining 20 lbs in the same amount of time...something that sounds impossible..and definitley not a healthy thing to do.....So, for now, I'm just holding my own until I talk to Dr. Lee and see where we go from there...I want to do what's best for Maggie...for her happiness and for her health.......
