I just clicked into the bridge web cam in Maine near the town where Gerry grew up. What a beautiful morning in Maine!!! All of 48 degrees and the sky is clear. I love being able to sit here and watch the tide go out but just can't get over the brilliant red of the leaves on the trees. This is the time of year when I get a little homesick for Maine but believe me, once the snow flies, I'm perfectly happy to be where I am. I just can't deal with all that snow. But if I had the money, I'd be back there, right now, being a leaf peeper. -- Piggy's Pad

Sandy, been meaning to ask especially since you mentioned the red leaves where you are, do you have fall and winter there? I guess you do since you said your leaves were turning. I am just doing some future retirement dreaming and want to go somewhere it is warm but not stifling hot like florida, but yet still has a shorter 'bare tree' season that us. Ramona, the red leaves are on the trees in Maine. Our trees here are just starting to show some color and even then, we usually don't get the brilliant reds that New England does. Oh, sure, some of the maples turn red, along with the Bradford Pears. But oh, yeah, we have fall and winter. I don't know that there's any *perfect* place to retire. Our summers are longer and hotter than yours and let's not forget the humidity. When it's over 100 degrees for a week, you just stay inside with the a/c on. Our winters can also be very cold and snowy, although...........I don't know if it's a weather cycle or global warming but we haven't had that much snow for the past several years. Our big fear is ice storms but those can happen anywhere. And of course, in the spring and summer, we have tornadoes to worry about but again, those can happen anywhere. They're just more common here. As for the leaves, they're usually pretty much off the trees by the middle of November and come back in April. Even in Houston, where my sister lives, the trees go dormant because the color change and shedding of leaves is caused by the days getting shorter and cooler. But if I could afford it, I'd be a snowbird. I'd love to spend the summers in downeast Maine (along the coast), since it doesn't get that hot there, and spend the winters either here or a bit further south. I love having four distinct seasons and wouldn't ever want to leave that but I couldn't cope with the fact that there was still snow in the woods in Maine in May. Here in Topeka, we have days in January where we can top 65-70 degrees. Two years ago, Christmas Day, we were close to 70 and didn't get any snow until well into January. And as much as I love the ocean, I also love the Flint Hills. Picture in your mind an Indian on a painted pony, riding over the swells of the land. Sounds a lot like here. I do like the 4 season, I just wish we had some green a bit longer. I'd hate to be so far away from the ocean too. And I do love snow. I never used too, it is somewhat recent I decided I really loved it. I like that where we live, we actually get marooned every now and then. It is so peaceful and quiet and really beautiful.
