Sandy, not to rain on your parade.... but Giardia often tests negative till it gets so bad it finally tests positive. Also, keeping it in the car in the heat probably ruined the sample. Your best bet is FRESH, and if you can't immediately go to the vet with a sample, you have to keep it refrigerated. That being said tho, here's hoping for solid BMs from now on for Snowy! -- Piggy's Pad

Oh, darn it all anyway! Our vet never said that it had to be refrigerated and he knew, when Gerry dropped the sample off, that Snowy had pooped it last night. Would it test negative even if the previous test was positive? But hey, you're not raining on my parade..........I appreciate your educating me, especially since my vet isn't doing such a good job. If he's been on meds and it's cleared up most of the infection, then yes, he can test negative. Every vet I've ever had has told me stool samples have to be fresh or kept refrigerated. If left in room temp or heat for even an hour, the nasties in the sample can not show up for tests. If you continue to have runny poops, I'd see about having another sample tested. Even if refrigerated, try not to let the sample be more than 24 hours old. I've also been told Giardia is hard to catch until it gets pretty bad.... A dog or cat can test negative multiple times before a positive pops up. Usually I just go ahead and treat with Flagyl anyway, as it has stuff in it to firm the bowels back up. I didn't realize you could refrigerate a poop sample..I knew it had to be fresh...
our Vet always told us as long as it didn't get "hard" they could still test it....sometime (especially with Maggie) I will get the sample the night before the office visit, I always tell Dr. Lee this and she never seems concerned.... (NT) -- Kate, 8:08:13 pm, Thu, 07/12/07
