Remember the niggardly debate, and the poor man who lost his job over it?

"A coon's age" doesn't refer to black people at all. Never did.

You don't need to apologize or stop using it.

This discussion just shows how people today are very careful not to insult someone, even unintentionally. Restores your faith in man, doesn't it. :)

"Main Entry: coon's age
Function: noun
Date: 1843
: a long while "

Let's not drop perfectly good words and expressions, because some people might misunderstand. Educate, and keep the words!

We don't use such roundabout expressions in New England. If we mean "a long time", we say "a long time". We're direct. We call a spade a spade. (That's about as roundabout an expression as you'll hear hear. :) ) I think I've shocked more than a few of you southerners on the forum over the years. :)

I've enjoyed reading all the expressions that are posted here. :)

Joan
