I have been trying to get sponsorship $$$'s from my city. They have asked me several questions that I could use some help with. Can anyone help me?

1. How much money does a race team spend on an average 2-day race weekend?

2. Does anyone know of any cities/towns who have sponsored their local race track? If so how much and under what circumstances.

Any help will be appreciated. My email is tamarabeam@sbcglobal.net my # is 918-636-1353

Thank you

I remember the first time I met Tommy, years ago. It was at Camden for the Region 2 race I think...1990?. We didn't know that many people in Indiana at the time and he just took us in :) Treated us like one of the family. I always looked forward to racing in Indiana cause I knew we would get to talk to Tommy. He was a character. We both learned alot about racing from him.

He will be missed.

In September 2007 auto racing lost one of its ambassador's,Denny Miller.
Denny began his racing career in the late 70's in Micro Midgets at what is now US24 Speedway. It was a small asphalt club owned track at which Denny served many positions including club president. In 1985 Denny along with a group of others took on the task of building a dirt race track for Micros in Peru In. called Circus City Speedway(now Miami County Speedway) Denny was also an excellent machinist and fabricator as he built his own car for himself and many others. He also designed and built a small rack and pinion steering used on the Micros and Junior Dragsters. In the mid 90's Denny's racing took a step up as he began building his own Full Midgets and developing a Subaru engine package for the midgets. Denny continued to race and be a friend to the racing world until he was taken from us.

On Saturday May 24th Miami County Speedway will hold the 1st annual Denny Miller Memorial to celebrate Denny's life.

Having done all or most of my racing in California. You could not help but know Frank and Jessie. Being out of the link in Arkansas for 12 years, I was informed of Franks death during this past winter when I talked to Paul Sanford. Now I am a month late finding out about Jessie. I will alway remember her smile and Franks laugh. I wish to pass my wishes to Russ and Joan, Both of which I banged wheels with.

" Major Flaw in rules -- Shaun Brandt, 08:03:00 03/04/08 Tue (NoHost/199.173.226.229)

There is a major flaw in your rules! The problem, as I see it, is this: You only have weight limits based on bore and stroke (and wing size). That is good in theory, but you have overlooked a MAJOR detail! If I go out and mill my head, degree my cam, add a timing advancer and a power commander box, I have spent more money on my motor and I'm still at 600cc and therefor can weigh 750. Now the budget racer is at a disadvantage, which is exactly what you're trying to avoid! Just my thoughts, please correct me if I'm wrong!

What you are saying is all true, in part, but you have the same advantage as everybody else. The 10 sq. ft. wing, and only one cockpit adjuster will limit your ability to hook up the car. I can also tell you that on three different tracks that we have raced on repeatedly, that when the A class and multis ran there was less than a tenth of a second difference in track records between them. Please feel free to also read the gentleman from NY post below. It is working there for a extended time with good results. It is also working well in other locations.

Well I race in the class formerly known as the A-class at Sweet Springs now. I have NO cockpit adjusters now and I hit my set-ups quite often. And when I'm off, the one adjuster would be all I would need to dial it in most of the time. Plus any tire helps hook up all the extra motor! Put a hard tire on them and it would help level the playing field. It doesn't need to be stamped, just needs to pass a durometer test. Plus we race for 30 laps, which in a race with no yellow flags (which happens often enough) that 0.10 adds up to a 3 second advantage on a track that 12 seconds is a lap, that means a quarter of a lap advantage. Plus you are just comparing record times, not the times that are consistently posted by these two classes which is closer to 0.30 to 0.50 seconds faster in many cases! I think this is all a huge step in the right direction, it just needs something else to level the field even more. Don't ask me what it is, but there has to be something.

I agree with Shaun, at Sweet Springs have racers that are big guys that go across the scales at 800+ and they are very fast I think the bigger the motor the harder the right rear should be I dont think the weight handicap is enough but you will find out. If the big motor is what wins everybody will need to buck up to be competitive.Just my opinion TOM

This article from the About the old NMMA has been updated by the Historian, Joyce Miller. She plans on trying to do more. Since the NMMA name is gone there will be articles from the old and very soon articles from the New, 600 Micro Sprint USA coming soon as things happen from time to time. But look for the About the NMMA link on the front page and see who did what and when.

" rules as discussed on maximum dirt.com -- Alan knell (happy), 13:46:49 02/07/08 Thu (mntl-sknell.micro.uiuc.edu/128.174.190.47)

This was a discussion about the rules on Maximum dirt.

Re: why all the discussion about rules
by AHRTeam on Tue Feb 05, 2008 1:11 pm

The rules are there because of drivers like yourself. With the rising costs of racing and fuel prices going higher and higher, low budget teams are having a hard enough time getting to the track. Once at the track they have to compete with their stock 600 engine vs. someone’s bored out 637cc engine all at the same weight is unfair. The rules are in place to let the maximum amount of drivers compete at the same time, and level the playing field. The rules allow for the high end teams to still go out and spend $10,000 on a motor, and at the same time a stock 600 (lower budget teams) can still be competitive with the larger (higher budget teams) allowing for bigger turnouts.

These rules have no been around for a long time. The NYMM Series was the first sanctioned body to try the weight rules and it has been nothing but success. Drivers no longer have to spend thousands of dollars to try and keep up with the high budget teams. I am not sure how they plan on distinguishing the cars, but with us it’s done by adding stickers to the side of the car. S-for stock, O-for open, and 2-for 2mm(637cc) cars. When you come across the scales, the tech insp. knows S=750lbs ect ect. You are given the stickers at the opening tech night, and if you change your motor you change the sticker. If you’re found cheating, you’re gone. Teching for motor size can be done in: 30 seconds once the spark plug is pulled. In 4 years we have yet to have someone cheat. It gives you a piece of mind knowing the motor size of the drivers you're racing against and to know that it will be teched. We tech every race at least the top 3.

It works folks, give it some time. Most of the posters here are drivers I’m sure. What you need to do is step out of the drivers point of view and into a promoter/president point of view. I heard this same grumbling that’s going on now 5 years ago when we introduced these rules here in NY. Talk to any of our drivers and they will tell you how good it’s been.NYMM Series

" Answer to Day 1 -- Chuck Kidwell, 09:02:26 01/15/08 Tue (adsl-75-51-224-141.dsl.ipltin.sbcglobal.net/75.51.224.141)

This is answer to Day 1

You said you hope you could get answered….I hope I can give you and the rest of the interested people those answers.

NMMA’s house was literally burned down. There is no person or group to point to for throwing in the match….it just self ignited. The membership was down to around 55 from 800 just a few years ago. The rules were too technical, there was no way to accurately enforce them; the drivers were upset with the way they were treated in tech; the tracks and clubs were unhappy with the way they felt they were being treated and above all times and technology was way ahead of the organization. Something had to be done! I had no intent of running for President when I placed a post on the Message Board stating what I thought was wrong and some ideas that might work to get us as the leader in Micro Sprint racing again. A few weeks later I was approached by several members asking me to run for the office. After contacting many track owners, chassis builders, engine builders and drivers, I accepted the nomination. I realize that only 50 or so people voted, but they are the membership and I became their choice.
After a big house fire, about all that is left is the foundation. That is what the NMMA is and we will build new from that. Yes, there is a name change. I was told by many tracks and drivers across the country that as long as it was the NMMA, they would not consider joining ever again. The name chosen by the Board was 600 Micro Sprint USA. Our cars are called Micro Sprints in most areas of the country and the 600 designates our engine size as does 360’s or 410’s do our big brothers. It gives us a new identity.
The old NMMA will not be allowed to die. The new website is under construction and will have stories by the Historian, articles on past National Champions and pictures of the cars that are so much of our valued History. We welcome those “old timers” to share their experiences on the web site. The message board and classifieds will continue and we encourage positive constructive content that is not just personal agenda but for the good of the organization.
The members do have a voice. They just have to use it. Contact the officers. Tell them your feeling. Ask questions. We are always open to fresh constructive ideas.
There is some money left in the treasury. Two thirds is in CD’s and the rest is our operating capital until the organization is up and running again. As a member you can call Mary Ellen Harris and she can give you the amounts. This is open to any member in good standing at any time.
I hope this answers the question you and others have been asking.
Thank you for asking. Please contact me at any time.

Chuck Kidwell President
600 MicroSprint USA

Allen,
We usually have little response from tracks until February or March, however, there has been interest from tracks that I have been talking with. We will have a Board meeting On December 15th to finalize a SIMPLIFIED set of rules. I am on my way to the PRI show to meet with Insurance groups to find the best plan available at a reasonable cost that will be attractive to the private promoter and the clubs. More will follow as these items are finalized. The new Board is working very hard to make this a Racer friendly organization. We are also considering a National event to be held at a neutral location.

Thanks for your interest. I hope this will answer some questions that others are also asking.

A great article is featured in this months Sprint Car and Midget concerning ASCS2. From reading the interviews with Emmitt, looks like ASCS2 is the future of racing for Micro's. Definitely needed since NMMA has died an agonizing death (they just haven't realized that they have passed on. A passing that is certainly not mourned by all. Great pics too of Andrew Felker, JRock, Crawford and the Hahn boys. With Emmitt's backing ASCS2 should be great for the sport.

Joe, Thanks for your years of service. I know it was a thankless job and at times you offended people and were accused of favoritisim. Shrug it off and go on, it's part of the job. You put in long hours doing what you thought best for the organization. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't, but you were there, doing the job. Enjoy you time off and pray the organization can recover. Time to let someone else fret over it. Good luck to the new board.
Thanks
Duffy

I completly agree with Chuck's ideas and have been trying
for a long time to implement some of his suggestions.
I am asking for your vote for ReElection as your Eastern
Vice President.
If I am ReElected I will give my complete support To who
ever is elected as our new president for the 2008 Racing
Season.
I have been friends and worked with Chuck for a good many
years and have been on the NMMA Board with Dean for many years.I would have no problem working for a New NMMA with
either one.

Its time for whoever wants to see the NMMA get back on its feet to stand up and tell us what you yourselves are going to do to promote the sport.I know it takes time and money to get out and go to the tracks put we the racers need to know what and who is going to represent us as a body not just a select few.Everybody said it was the leader ship of the NMMA that caused it to fall. Its easy to blame somebody else instead of blaming ourselves. Some still dont want to see the NMMA come back. They dont want to be governed by anybody so that is going to be a hurdle to jump.If you are not willing to stand up fight, we need to know who is willing to sacrifice their time and energy to promote the NMMA and not thereselves.Tonight is a good nite to start to promote the Rebuiding of the NMMA at a race track nearest you.We will see Chuck at the races . WHERE WILL YOU BE?? PS THATS MY OPINION Ed Carter

" Election time -- Chuck Kidwell, 16:51:35 10/04/07 Thu (adsl-76-214-154-207.dsl.ipltin.sbcglobal.net/76.214.154.207)

Well NMMA members, it is time for the bi-annual Presidential election. Earlier this summer I voiced my opinion on the Message Board about what I felt was needed to get the NMMA back to its position as the leader in Micro Sprint racing. As a result I was asked if I would run for President and I accepted with some reservation and stipulations about the job being returned to its form as it was earlier when the President had the authority to make decisions about policy and direction. As it is presently the only thing a President can do is conduct the meetings and break a tie vote. This resulted in an organization that had no place for the buck to stop! I am told that during the last Board Meeting there was general agreement with that. With that in mind the following are what I feel to be some of the most important items to accomplish.

During the last few months I have contacted and met with engine and chassis builders, track owners, drivers, past and current members and participants, insurance venues and these ideas are the result of those conversations. . The one outstanding point all agreed on was that a National Organization is needed to standardize the rules and help declare a true National Champion for the classes in Micro racing. The discouraging point was how many did not think the name “National Modified Midget Association” would attract members or tracks because of past reputation. This bothers me. We need to clean up the rules and our attitude to get members in an organization that will give correct exposure. We must find markets and publications to promote ourselves. There are very few Club tracks left when compared to the past. We must include the private promoted venues in our organization and give them the opportunity to participate and listen to their ideas.

One of the biggest attractions to the NMMA during the growing years of the ‘80s and early ‘90s was the insurance that was offered to the tracks. We need to find an insurance program that will offer the track a reasonable and adequate insurance plan. I am currently gathering information and believe we can offer a policy that will fill the need.

We need to replace the rule book with a simplified version and simple Tech!!!! If you can’t tech an item equally among all engines then it cannot be teched. This has been a major item in the past and a solution must be found as soon as possible. We have set our sights on the 600cc engine for all classes but we must also give those presently running
1 or 2 mil over engines the chance to run with us.

There is no overnight fix for the NMMA. It will take a few years but an organization with the right leadership and members working to use the resources available to us without personal agendas being pushed will create an organization that will succeed. If you feel this can be accomplished then give me your support to get this done.

Chuck Kidwell

David

The current classes would remain for the present. I would like to see only 4..wing, non-wing, restrictor and Kid (JR) Sprint plus some local option classes (250/70 or sportsman) in the future. Yhis format is in use with weight handicaps for the larger engines at several tracks now and is working well. The important thing is to NOT exclude an engine size now and work to the 600 cc limit in the near future. We need to be racer friendly!

The big thing we face is not pleasing one persons adgenda but trying to get simple rules that will work not only now but for the coming years without making shoot from the hip decisions.

Thanks for asking......See ya at the track.......

Chuck

This is just my opinion I feel that part of the problems with the NMMA were when Chuck was allowed to help make decisions with the board I listened as parents complained about this at the Nationals for 2 years in a row.I guess we see the old saying birds of a feather flock together. This week I have spoke to several past members and they feel there has been some good to come from Chuck but it was to eventually benefit his business, also they feel as I do that I cannot support the NMMA with him in as president and wonder by the time his tenure is up what kind of money will be left in the NMMA. I am sure this will not please all but it is my opinion thanks. m.koebel@mchsi.com 270-898-0573

I agree, and my opinion is anyone who is involved in the micro/Jr.Sprint business should not be an officer in the organization. It would really make no difference if he or she directly or indirectly benefited from a decision but it will come up and the accusations will fly!! I was in the business and now do work for some of the major players in the business and would not be involved as an officer no matter what the circumstances were or are!
Chuck I would seriously think it over, I know you have good intentions to help or to fix it, if it can be done, but I would hate to see it have a negative impact on your business that you have work at building. The impact could be irrecoverable.
With all due respect,
Terry Dines

I think there are several ways to look at this. I think it would be good to have someone like Chuck as a leader. My reason for this is that he is involved in the sport everyday. I give anyone credit who would stand up and assume the resposability. Yes, there will probably be conflicts, but I think you will have some anyway. If the leader is someone who is a weekend hobby racer, will the dedication be there, or will the agenda be short sighted and benefit only a few.
