I can't imagine life without my TiVos! I just tell it what shows I want to watch, and it records them every time they come on, so I never miss anything. When I'm ready to watch a show, I just go to my list and select it. And if I have several eps of a particular show in there, it groups them all into a folder with the show's title as the name.

And then there's the ability to rewind and fast forward. If you didn't understand what someone said, you can just rewind it - even if it is live. And if you are watching something you already recorded, or if you are watching live but you rewound and are now "behind" the live broadcast, you can fast-forward through the commercials in order to catch up. It's awesome!

I can't speak for the cable company DVRs, but we have had multiple TiVos for years and they are super easy to program. The software is very intuitive. I don't think I have ever had to refer to a manual.
