Movies, movies, movies! -- judi, 16:49:59 07/29/09 Wed [35]
I've been catching up on current movies. Up to a couple weeks ago, the only movies I've seen have been on IMAX: Dark Knight and Star Trek, fabulous, Watchmen and Transformers; eh! and Day the Earth Stood Still - pretty bad. Also saw Burn After Reading and loved that.

But I've been renting and have seen quite a few other movies.

Excellent: The Reader (though disturbing on several levels) and Doubt.

Very Good: Taken and Seven Pounds (cried and cried)

OK: Cadillac Records, Vicky Cristina Barcelona,

Poor: Benjamin Button. Great idea but Fitzgerald made it a short story for a reason. Way too long and slow.

How about y'all? What do you think? What movies have you seen that you recommend or not?

I'm watching the Changeling today. But after that, I may go back to old movies.

This year I really enjoyed Taken..Proposal..and most of all Star Trek..UP..500 Days of Summer and Transformers(grew up with this cartoons...heart Optimus Prime and love the boost for our U.S.military)..Public Enemies bored me and I hate Hollywoodized history...for the history buffs I recommend Defiance & Valkyrie.     - my daughter knows my tastes pretty well - she knows I like Happily Ever Afters and dislike stupid comedy. She says I'll really enjoy the proposal so as soon as it hits the DVD shelves I'll rent it. - I've gone back to my old favourites. have spent the last couple of days in a dancing frenzy - dirty Dancing, Mama Mia, Strictly Ballroom, One Last Dance and Grease. - I worked in a video store for 23 yrs so a movie has to be pretty outstanding for me to like it. I did enjoy Valkyrie, Taken, Seven Pounds. I love Field of Dreams, True Lies, National Treasure, Indepence Day, The Italian Job and Weekend at Bernies for oldies but goodies. But, my favorite is Something The Lord Made with Alan Rickman. - Judi, I don't know if your a reader or not. I am. I'm reading an excellent book right now "Those who saved us". by Blum. Not a light read. Looking at WWII from the German Citizens view. - I liked Gran Torino with Clint Eastwood. We rented it recently and though I found a couple of things sad (I don't usually like sad movies) and I would have preferred a different ending - (I love strong happily ever afters) - This was such a good movie all the way through that even the few things I would have liked to see not happen did dampen my enjoyment of the movie - This was really a great late year Clint Eastwood venue.   - I have only seen two movies at the theatre in the last year: Dark Knight, at the IMAX Seattle, with the extra IMAX scenes. Loved it. The other movie was Passchendale, with one of my fave actors. It was tremendously moving, and effected me on many levels. (Inside.) -- Cece, 17:45:32 07/31/09 Fri
- Here's one I was terribly disappointed in - Last Chance Harvey- The commercials were so charming and sweet - Thought it would be a good romantic comedy- It wasn't - it was awful - slow, long, mostly boring and frequently stupid. - I watch very few current movies. Most of them just don't appeal to me. But that's okay. Going to the theater isn't in the budget right now. I rent from Netflix instead--it's a whole lot cheaper. Tonight is the season finale for Burn Notice! 'You tell me where Fiona is right now!!!' Be still my heart. I can't wait.

Tonight is also the finale for So You Think You Can Dance-- Go Brandon, though I really like Jeanine and Kayla, too.

Sunday is the season finale for In Plain Sight!! Oh-- I think it's going to be dramatic....Marshall Marshall kneeling in what looks like a hospital corridor overcome with emotion-- argh!!

Any body else watching or have any other season finales that are coming up?? Do tell!

  - The Burn Notice mid season finale was great. I'm glad that they didn't leave us with any major cliffhanger about Michael & Fi! The show was fast paced and amazing. - Brandon is so sweet and unassuming, but his talent is awesome! I love Jeanine for her talent, warnth, and earthiness, and Kayla for her perfection and ability to ACT. I love Evan for what he does, and love that he's turned a lot of young people on to the Gene Kelly/cool Jazz styles. But he really isn't up the standards of the other three. I really want Brandon to win, though I could life with Jeanine or Kayla as they also deserve it. I just don't want any of those three to come in fourth as that would be so unfair. - I wanted Brandon to win (why didn't he get 50,000 like Katee?). However, it was really neat to see Jeanine win, as she was never a front runner. She just always put in a strong performance, and added to her talent, she has this warm, compelling personality. She deserved the win for sure, though both Brandon and Kayla are better dancers. I didn't see anyone mention the CIGAR the General had in The Storm. It was nice to see Harm/DJE with another cigar between his fingers. Also, didn't Denise look beautiful in last weeks ep again??? I found another great video. This is the group Perpetuum Jazzile (from Slovenia) performing a totally acappella version of Toto's Africa. They do their own percussion and thunderstorm sound effects. Be sure to turn up the volume or you won't be able to hear the "wind" and "rain" at the beginning.

I've been super busy taking care of my Mom this summer and haven't even had time to post all summer, let alone watch TV, but last night, I flopped, exhausted on the couch, and FINALLY watched some TV and this new show called 'Hung' was airing. I mean, I was flabbergasted to see such a show on US TV. I found it 'guilty-addictive' viewing -- by that I mean -- it was SO bad, it was good. Just wanted to stop in and leave my condolences on the passing of Walter Cronkite. He was a big part of my childhood, and I grew up hearing his calm voice during stressful events.   - I grew up seeing Walter Cronkite as *the* anchorman to watch for any/all news. I always thought he had the perfect voice for delivering news, good or bad, and seemed so confident and calming. He even showed a "funny" side of himself when he made a cameo appearance on the Mary Tyler Moore show in the 70's. ("I'm gonna get you for this Lou!") LOL! The characters of Michael & Fi are so much like Harm & Mac that it�s spooky. Granted the background & career choices are different, but their interactions with each other are SOOOO Harm & Mac. Once again Michael left Fi in tears. I could absolutely see that last scene of the episode, as being a mirror to the JAG episode �Goodbyes.� The conversation about Michael (aka Harm) having to get his old job back (i.e. Harm & flying), and Fi (Mac) having to accept it & begrudgingly be supportive even if it broke her heart.

Fi: How did it go?
Michael: I�m not sure� whatever happens � one of us will be happy, I guess. Why can�t you be with me on this?
Fi: Talking to you is like talking to Spencer. You�re both so focused on one thing it clouds everything else. It�s a crazy way to live, Michael.

  - Hiya CeCe...Billy Mays was an obnoxious (sorry but he really was) pitchman...he was most famous for OxyClean & Mighty Putty. He was loud, booming, & just overall obnoxious. I had to change everytime an infomercial with him in it came on. That being said, I do feel empathy for his family, & don't wish death upon anyone. His death seems odd, like maybe it had something to do with debris falling on his head after he was on a commercial flight that blew a tire upon landing.         It isnt unusual for someone to die of a blood clot or embolus after a flight. Sitting for long periods of time on a plane can lead to blood clots in the legs that travel to the heart or lungs. Him not feeling well before bed would also not be unusual if in fact it were a clot. Alright, I admit I am a pretty boring person, but that notwithstanding, I have just watched Dirty Dancing 5 times in 3 days (I know - pathetic). It did bring me to this question though. Who do you think had amazing onscreen chemistry, I mean the type of chemistry that just drew you in, no matter how much you knew better, this was larger than life and a completely plausible thing.

For my part, the one thing that I noticed is that Patrick Swayze, like my other favourite actor David James Elliot has a way of having whole conversations with his onscreen SO with just his eyes. For me I think that is part of the magic.

So for me, definately David James Elliot and Catherine Bell, Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, Colin Firth and a number of leading women, particularly Jennifer Ehle and the girl from Love Actually whose name (in RL) I can never remember.

- About Michael. Its just a sad day. Its been a long convoluted road for him, even though he was only 50. I keep keep thinking of the words of the song "I'll Be There". So far I've enjoyed it - though I found a few little things funky and unnecessary -

I really liked DJE's performance. It was nice to see he still has it - Every once in a while - there was that Harm glimmer in his eye and it was like finding an old friend.

- I liked it, too. I turned on the first part, expecting to lose interest soon and go do something else, the way it was with Bloodsteel (which I thought was just awful). But I watched the whole two hours, and I'll DVR next Sunday to be able to watch the end. It didn't seem serious enough to be scary, so I could just enjoy the story. By the way, I�ve got to say that this is my new favorite show. I swore I would NEVER �ship� for a couple again, but I can�t help myself! For those who don�t watch the TV series, Michael�s mother told Fi that �A relationship with Michael is like trench warfare.� When Michael opened his gift, he found an antique bayonet. When he looked questioningly at Fi, she responded back, �You mother said that a relationship with you is like trench warfare.� She then leaned in, kissed his cheek & said, �I thought you should be armed.�
