TV theme songs -- chris k, 12:17:17 03/11/14 Tue [59]

the other day a friend and I were singing the theme song from the patty duke show to each other on facebook

at more than one party someone has been known to sing all the words to Gilligans Island or the brady bunch - and even both versions of the partridge family. (though most folks are sktechy on season one version)

I vaguely remember loving a show as a small child with imogene cocoa in it about cavemen and they lyrics were something like - its about time its about blank it's the craziest place in space.

I honestly don't know of any tv shows in the last few decades -other than the big bang - that still have lyrics to their theme songs

do you think we'd remember more shows if they had songs we could link them too?

- I agree. We know the lyrics to All In the Family, Family Ties, WKRP in Cincinattie, the Mary Tyler Moore show, and the Nanny for example.   - Yes, I can think of a ton of them that had great melodies even without lyrics: Perry Mason, Simon and Simon, Chips, Remington Steele, Scarecrow and Mrs King, just to name a few. - The Beverly Hillbillilies is being aired here in the UK. This show is hilarious. They don't play the theme song, which I knew all the words from and still know, but instead play the incredible music of Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt, which is fine with me. - I think it's sad that no one does theme songs any more. I only watch a few shows, and for the few that DO have a theme song that lasts more than three seconds, it is just an instrumental song without much of a melody. - And just to add to this thread -- I get goosebumps whenever I hear the instrumental theme music from Inspector Morse. It's so haunting and characteristic of the mood of the show. So, even with no words, the music itself can move us. There's actually a spinoff of Morse, called Lewis, which also has an excellent tune that makes me know it's Lewis. They seem to be bigger on instrumental identifiers here (and in Europe -- for example 'Poirot'). (NT) -- mj, 06:27:20 03/12/14 Wed

- The Patty Duke Show (ok, yes, I'm old!). When I was a kid I'd run around singing "but they're cousins, identical cousins all the way." Also "One Day at a Time" had great lyrics. . ."this is it, this is life, the one you get so go and have a ball." The lyrics ended with "we'll take it as it comes one day at a time." - Does anyone remember the show 'My Three Sons' with Fred McMurray? I always loved him so much! He was such a great Dad. I often wonder whatever happened to the kids that played the sons. It also had a familiar theme tune and a big dog named Champ. (NT) -- mj, 05:02:19 03/15/14 Sat
  - Speaking of three kids and a Dad, DJE is busy filming this pilot for Fox which is now called 'No Place Like Home'. It sounds like his character won't be a gentle giant like Fred McMurray, though.   - I loved my three sons and I always felt the reason the show lasted as long as it did was they weren't afraid to change- all the sons married (except the youngest) they even let the dad marry. They set a standard that few shows were willing to follow- poor laverne and shirley were forced to remain the same to their detriment - which reminds me- Schlameel Schlamazal Otsenfepper incorporated !!!! - and speaking of imbedded in your memory banks- is there anyone anywhere who hears the words "hour tour" never mind "Three hour tour" and their minds go straight to Gilligan? Just the other day a friend was telling me of her upcoming trip to Alaska - She said we dock here - go there- and then we have a four hour tour to bla bla and I responded - As long as it's not three hours. And she sang the line " a three hour touuuur." and laughed. I never said a word about Gilligan- the context was not tv shows or theme songs - and yet- She got it. !! - how iconic is that? - Some of the instrumentals were also radio hits - like "Hill Street Blues" and "Miami Vice". That was great. Loved the Magnum PI theme, and Cheers - who can forget "Where everybody knows your name"? M*A*S*H had a great song, an instrumental version of a song that claimed "suicide is painless". And let's not forget "Welcome Back" from "Welcome Back Kotter" (another radio hit).. Anyone watching American Idol? -- Cece, 16:00:16 01/17/14 Fri [4]
After last year's debacle, I swore I'd never watch AI again. But the three judges, Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick Jr, and Keith Urban, are really great. They have brought the competition back to the competitors. Not a diva or divo amongst them. The auditions have been fun and interesting to watch, and the judges are fair and really nice to the singers. And they give helpful criticism. They are gorgeous looking but come off as real people, not fake, pouty, or pretentious. And there's none of the annoying fighting. A real breath of fresh air.

what the hell is wrong with our world

I just read that Philip Seymour Hoffman - An amazing actor- is dead of a drug overdose at 46

Sseriously people-

Hollywood has always had it's insanities- we lost judy garland at an early age- and a slew of other greats

but isn't anyone ever going to learn?

- Apparently not. I never dared even try weed, so I don't get the appeal. But look at Cory Monteath. Did PSH learn from him? Now we see Justin Beiber starting on that road. - Actors are people who are, for the most part, very sensitive, souls. Hollywood can be a soul-less place and I just read something that Jim Carrey wrote about the death of his friend when he said: "Dear r Philip, a beautiful, beautiful soul. For the most sensitive among us the noise can be too much. Bless your heart." Yhis really sums it up. Adding to that, some of the 'spiritual gurus' that prey on vulnerable sensitive actors and stars are so full of BS that they lead people down the wrong paths and to even darker places.   - As someone who appreciates actors (having failed aspirations of being one myself), I just don't buy that actors are more sensitive than the rest of us, particularly as the large majority of actors, famous and otherwise, don't go down the road of hedonistic pleasures just because they can afford to.   - In the modern world, illegal drug use is far greater than it was in the first 7 decades of the 20thc. When I was in elementary school in the 1950s, we were told about opium and its effects, but it's use was esoteric. Ordinary people did not have to worry about their children using even marijuana. Now the use of recreational drugs is widespread, across all classes. Hollywood glamourises drug use. Even drug overdoses are not blamed on the users. It's always someone else's fault.     - But people STILL got addicted and still had problems with substance abuse beginning in the 1800s. And there was a time when many drugs were NOT illegal - opium, heroin, morphine, cocaine. There were many addicts but they were not using illeglly (I found a link with brief info - inside). Drugs were finally outlawed, but then the '60s happened. I agree that illegal drug use has been glamorized by Hollywood, the music industry, etc., and the choice to take that first hit is never anyone else' s fault. -- The Chief, 23:07:48 02/11/14 Tue
      - In the past in Western societies, drug use was prevalent, mostly among the educated (poets, aesthetes, doctors etc). In the past few decades, ordinary working and middle class parents, have to watch out for early drug use by their kids, even in elementary school. Common drug use amongst late teens and up, didn't really happen (outside of the Beat Generation), until the mid to late 60s, and it certainly hadn't hit school kids. Found out about this new series over the weekend and it looks EXCELLENT! I LOVE historical stuff, and it seems the creators really tried hard to be accurate and authentic. Starts April 6th!

- Sound interesting. As a Brit myself, I can tell you we didn't learn tons of US history, other than the pilgrims (John Smith, Pocohontas etc). Our own history is pretty massive. We started doing history in elementary school, around age 8. I always wanted to get into the 20th century, but we never made it. There was just too much to learn from the Romans up. However, I bet I know more US history than you know about Canadian and/or British. I'm looking fwd to this show. - I still watch NCIS, I enjoy it however the story lines are not as "simple" as they use to be - too many with undertones, continuations from previous episodes, takes too much thought. prior to JAG. He was in the cast in the re make of
"The Untouchables" , which was a syndicated show
from 1993-1994 .The star of the show was Tom Amandes,
who you might remember, guest starred on a few JAG episodes.
I read that dje was only in 16 of the original
42 episodes produced.

- I wasn't overly fond of season 7, but LOVED the series finale! I couldn't imagine how Matt Nix was going to wind everything up, but he did. Also manette, the writer's actually planned to use all the phrases from the intro in the series finale. If you watch it again, keep an ear pealed for each phrase, they're all there. THAT looks like an excellent panel. I didn't watch it when JLo was a judge, but I've seen Connick on "standards week" and he will be excellent.

Randy Jackson will return as the "mentor" to replace Jimmy Iovine. Not sure if he'll be as tough as Jimmy, but maybe he's been hiding it all these years LOL
