      • Maybe I should have said "emotional" rather than sad. However, it acted as a trigger with me this morning. As usual, I was anthropomophising (sp). I kept thinking of how the lion must have wondered why her family had abandoned her, and then was so happy to see them. If I were those guys, I would have felt heartbreak at having to say goodbye again. Of course I thought it was great the lion remembered them (with affection.)   A post on the L-Board made me long to be at the beach, and since that ain't happenin' this summer (*sigh*) I was wondering if anyone knows any good books where the setting is the beach.
  
  Mysteries, romance novels, historical fiction, etc. (Nothing creepy, tho.) Anything where the story takes place at the beach. If I can't GO there physically, I might as well try to go there in my mind. I can almost smell the salt spray and the salt-water taffy now.....

  • I'm reading "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch. He is the Carnegie Mellon University Professor who had his last lecture on You Tube last year. It is such a moving book. He has pancreatic cancer with mets to the liver and stomach. He is terminal and is living his life the way he wants to with his wife and kids. If anyone has a chance to see the lecture itself on You Tube, you should see it before reading the book. Both are wonderful. They'll make you cry and laugh.   Just thought I'd throw some questions out there.
  
  About Roxy..she seems to be investing alot og herself into the rebuilding of the Hump Bar, and its proprietor, Betty(the old bat). How will she be able to maintain her dedication to Betty and the bar, while Trevor is recovering from his injuries? Will she be able to walk away from the bar, when Trevor is up for transfer??
  
  Alot of comparisons have been made between Pam's "Have At It' radio show, and the radio show on the TV series, "The Unit" also hosted by an army wife.(Kim Brown) Which do you think is more representative of army wives? Why?
  
  Denise seems to be 'turning a page' in her life, now that she's returned to work, resumimg her 'love affair' with motorcycles and is willing to stand her ground on a number of issues with Frank. Will this be the beginning of the end for their marriage? Is Frank the kind of man who can adjust?
  
  Is Michael a 30 year man? Or was his consideration of retirement just a reaction to Amanda's death?
  
  About Joan, Roland encouraged her to 'lead' in her new expectant mother's exercise class, to help her feel as though she belonged.
  After that, however, she told the class, on her first day, that while she was in that class she was just another expectant mother, with all the same aches and pains that go with the condition(or words to that effect) Why do you think she approached the situation that way??

  • Here goes: 1. Trevor isn't hurt bad so don't see a problem. Don't see an issue of transfer b/c then they would no longer be on the show..lol. 2. Don't know and don't care, I don't watch the Unit. 3. I love Denise and her finding herself. Frank pisses me off and while yes I think he'll adjust he'll go kicking and screaming. (Next weeks preview at Lifetime I want to just slap him, what a jerk). 4. It was reaction to grief. He's a 30 year man easily. 5. Don't really care, I thought that scene was a waste of time.     • While its true that the issue, if played out in a normal way, would eliminate them from the show, there are other ways to write them in. The Hump Bar will be a fixture, Betty isnt even related to anyone serving presently and she is in the major story line. Denise is at the post hospital, she doesnt have to be an army wife to be in the show, she'll just live off post. Sooo there are alot of ways the story lines could go.       • I disagree mkim. If Roxy and Trevor were transferred it would be to a different post which would be a different state or they could even be transferred out of the country. So don't see a possiblity there. As far as Denise, while yes she is a nurse and could work there, she would have to live off post if she weren't married to Frank. Hence the whole premise of the show is shot. The show is about these 5 Army Wives (one husband) who live on post together and their relationships with each other and their spouses.           • As far as Betty, she's just a guest star who periodically shows up when the hump bar is shown. She's on right now because she's staying with Roxy. She'll be leaving soon and will possibly or probably be a guest star if/when she visits. Like I said above, this show is about these couples at Fort Marshall and what goes on around post.         • Well, unfortunately Denise would only be able to stay on post for 6 months after a death and after a divorce she would have to leave right away. I highly doubt that Denise would turn around a day or two later and marry someone else in the military so she could stay on post..lol..I mean get real. It wouldn't go that way and Denise would look like an idiot. While I'm not happy with Frank right now, Denise and Frank won't divorce and she'll stay on post so she can remain on the show. Denise is employed by the Army hospital as a civilian, so if something were to happen to her marriage in the future, she wouldnt have to be written out, since the hospital is on base. I dont think Theresa is saying D would marry someone on post to stay on post. I do know the premise of the show, Amy. I also have alot of experience as a Navy wife and Army mom.                 • Unless any of us are writers for the show there is no way we can unequivivally say what is going to happen. They can easily move Denise off post or have her divorce Frank. WE cant say what the writers have in mind. If the shows havent aired...anything is possible. I have a lot of experince lately with how things are filmed and being on set. NOTHING is set in stone until the director yealls cut and print. Then it is still up to the whims of the editing team.   • I think Trevor's injuries will be more psychological and his physical injuries will not be that serious. Roxy will be able to multitask if necessary. Once the bar gets going I think she would be able to walk away from it as she knows she will always have something to return to whether by choice or circumstance.   • I enjoyed seeing the glow of CB riding the bike as Denise on AW. Its her real life love and she becomes a happy kid around it. Im banking down the road one of the husbands will be killed. Easier to do that than one of the main ladies...plus TV is full of shockers for sweeps and ratings. I hope its Frank.......LOL!!!   The Stargate universe was hit with sad news on Sunday when it was reported that Don S. Davis had died of a massive heart attack. Davis played General George Hammond aka Hammond of Texas on the long running hit Stargate SG-1.

  You guys sure seem to be having loads of fun with this game, and the 10 seasons and 227 episodes of JAG certainly allow for MANY clues and games and threads.
  
  I have an idea for you guys to consider, tho, okay?
  
  Would you consider doing one password thread a week like the Episode of the Week on the Main Board (appoint someone from your group of players to start it off)? Maybe let Monday be "password day"? And maybe only do, say, 15 clues per thread?
  
  By limiting the number of clues per week/thread, it allows you to save great clues for the next week. The fewer clues per week, the more weeks your games will last - maybe through the whole summer! Also, it keeps the threads shorter, allowing for a greater variety of threads on the main page.
  
  Since this is a discussion forum, please feel free to discuss this suggestion, decide how you want to proceed, and ask questions. We mods want to make sure that everyone who comes to any of the HB boards feels as if there's something to which they can contribute. Organizing and streamlining the "Password" game will make it more accessible and fun for all posters.

    • Actually, Boston Tiger started the game and then Chris K moved it to this page. I merely revived it. But as to running this long-term, I'm going to have to decline. Right now, I'm suffering from the sad life of unemployment which has given me time and a desire to distract myself with fun things, ... but God willing, I will someday (soon) have a gainful and meaningful job.   I know Mondays Bones was probably discussed thoroughly when it first ran but I wasnt online and didnt have TV at the time. Does anyone have any comments? I thought the choice of costumes by the varying characters was interesting. Though the choices were almost predictable, they still seemed to make it appear clever. In 1991 when the movie was released, it was considered to be terribly scary. I'm sure I shall get more scared as the movie progresses, but I'm having the feeling of deja vu all over again.
  
  It's amazing how all the CSI type tv shows with graphic descriptions of horrific murders, can make us numb. I do understand that Hannibal Lecter is an interesting psycho nut, unlike most real serial murderers who are terrifyingly mundane. And I know that Clarisse is into "profiling", which was a relatively new procedure and movie/tv topic at the time. So why am I so bored? The acting and production are really good, so it's not those factors. I guess I'm just really bored with the whole "let's watch the autopsies for fun" genre.
  
  I recall a time when watching Dracula and other unreal undead chaps, would frighten me to the core. So much of the fear came from the unknown, the vampirical elegance (particularly of Christopher Lee)and psycho-sexual lure of Count Dracula as he played mysterious host to the unsuspecting traveller. It helped that the story took place in the night, with dark carriages and black horses (not to mention the gothic castles.)Besides, Bram Stoker's original book was brilliant.
  
  Did we see (or read about) cut up bodies or vulgar details of the actions of the sickest of sickos? No. The fear was in our minds, particularly as most people don't believe in vampires. But whether we believe in an afterlife or not, we do fear "that undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveler returns, (Hamlet)," and 19th century Romanticism was rife with the connections between sex and death.
  
  I guess I should have gone to see SOTL 17 yrs ago, not waited until I'm immune to the whole detailed murder shock genre.

Absolutely NO interest.   • I read SotL and saw the movie. While I thought the acting was great and so was the story, it was way too graphic for me. I read the sequel and it was so gross, I vowed never to see the movie. In the old days, they illuded to the violence but they didn't show it. Why do they think we need to see all the blood and guts? Does it make it more realistic of a story? I don't think so but it sure attracts those who love to see graphic violence rather then those who love a good mystery. It's not the gore that gave me the shivers when I saw SOTL it was the way Hannibal got into people's heads. But it didn't really scare me like a slasher movie would.   • I saw SOTL when it came to Italy and read a book by the same author. It's not the kind of movie I would like to watch again yet and not because of the graphic. The movie was well directed and acted in my opinion. Personally I found outstanding one scene: that one where you can see Lecter all strepped with his mask.     • I guess my point is that SotL no longer has the same affect, even as a psychological thriller, because we've been shocked into an anasthetic state. Even earlier, The Exorcist completely terrified me. I remember sitting in the movies, and my DH and I had our hair standing on end. I found the book frightening too. I also jumped out of my skin watching Wait Until Dark. OMG, I nearly pulled my date's arm off. But then came all the slasher movies (that I didn't see), and the reasonably good quality night time tv dramas that love copying each other. Who can be scared any more?         • I thought SOTL was a great film. I didn't see it at the movies, I was too scared. I saw it later at home. I recognized the name Hanibal Lecter from a book I read in the early eighties called Red Dragon. That book cured me of reading that sort of thing. It was too scary for me! It was made into a movie starring William Petersen called Manhunter. I think they remade it again later but I didn't see it. Nor did i see any of the SOTL sequels.   • Have to say, I'm a bit like Chief. Have never really been into horror/slash/psycho movies. Couldn't see the point of scaring myself with a movie when I could do a much better job with a book and my imagination. I have read the Hannibal Lecter series of books, and although early Dean R Koontz scared me more, I still found them a little chilling. I think you are right about the desensitisation of our emotions though.     • I think you get a point when you talk about desensitization. More and more often there are graphics on screen. I've never watched CSI, since it's a little disturbing to me and I have to admit that tastes are changing (though I'm not sure I can follow), but when I was young I read quite everything by Stephen King and some by Dean Koontz too.   • I must say, Cece, you're a lot braver than I. When it comes to SOTL, I've only ever seen about 30 to 40 minutes of it somewhere in the middle. What I saw seemed rather well done, and in its plot twists, almost intriguing, but I can't say I've ever felt compelled to see the rest of it. I like a good suspense yarn or crime drama as much as the rest of you, but CSI and its successors lost me as a customer when I realized the producers saw the physical gross-out as one of their main "selling points."   Just a few entertainment-related things I've been mulling over lately....
  
  1) "Fool's Gold" - not the best movie on the planet in terms of plot and character development, but day-yum, Matthew McHorneyhey is hot!!! Had a great "girls night" at the dollar theatre with this one a week or so ago. I'd call the movie a "guilty pleasure", but I can't feel bad about watching MM cavort in the Caribbean for 90 minutes in nothing but low-slung board shorts.
  
  2) Facebook - joined it recently. It's interesting, and can be quite time-consuming once you start "connecting" with all the people on your list, but kinda cool for keeping up with things. There are a lot of Gen-X and Y people in our church who participate, and when they take pics of and event, you have to go to facebook to look at them. If anyone here is on it and wants to "be friends" (cheesy grin), let me know!
  
  3) George Carlin - what DVDs does he have out that I could pick up at Blockbuster??
  
  4) Neil Diamond's new CD is fairly mellow, but I like it so far.
  
  5) My son has spent his afternoon playing the new Guitar Hero IV Aerosmith edition game. I'm glad he enjoys himself, and I liked it when it first came out, but now I'm not interested anymore. It's all the same sounding heavy-metal. I'm waiting for the Pat Benetar Edition.
