 hey everyone- i have sort of a complicated question.....umm, i mentioned before about my extreme depression and anxiety, and how i'm doing some therapy next week....the only thing is, almost everyone thinks i need medication (especially physiatrist)--and quickly! normally, i'd take it....the only problem is that i have a big family history of bi-polar (manic depression) my mother and older sister are both bi-polar....he wants to put me on an antidepressant, which if you guys dont know, can push you right into a manic episode if you are, in fact, bi-polar....i have no history of being manic (not yet,anyway)...in fact, most days i'm too depressed to get out of bed and too anxious to go anywhere.....but a similar thing happened to my sister....she wasn't exactly "manic", not to anyone else's knowledge.....but she was extremely depressed....that was when she was about my age (scary!!) they put her on an antidepressant and she went completely nuts-- manic and very hyper....ive watched both my mother and sister w/ their manic episodes and its a very scary thing to have happen with you. My dr. says i'm at risk, so to speak, but it's also very likely that i might just have the "depression" part of the illness, with out ever having mania....therefore antidepressants will be helpful. my question is if you guys were in my situation (family history) would you take a medication that might "push" you into a more serious illness, or just try the therapy instead? i am really motivated to start feeling better and i know the meds might help me, but am terrified. sorry for the complicated question!!!
