Subject: Friday the 13th

I have always been curious about superstitions and especially so because today is Friday the 13th, considered by many people to be an unlucky day. Some superstitious people cancel doctor's appointments, avoid travel and put off other risky behaviors in an effort not to tempt fate on Friday the 13th.

In general, are you a superstitious person about this day or about other things in your life? Do you carry a talisman for good luck? Do you avoid walking under ladders or stepping on sidewalk cracks? If you are not in the U.S., what superstitious beliefs are there in your country?

[> I usually "think" about the common superstitions when I see them happen (black cat, etc), but don't put any stock in them. I don't walk under Ladders because it's not safe in general. I open umbrellas in the house tho - how are they going to dry out? I had a roommate who was always throwing salt over her shoulder (she made a lot of popcorn, spilled a lot of salt). I think there was a whole shaker-full in our carpet when we moved out. -- The Chief - I'm a firm believer that the "bad luck" that comes your way is usually as a result of bad choices you make, 12:04:11 05/13/11 Fri [1]

[> I'm not really a superstitious person, but I cant say that, when I hear that its Friday the 13th, that I dont think of possible bad luck. I dont base my life on it, I'm not afraid to take a trip or plan anything important that day. As sick as the Friday the 13th movies were, maybe they've made their mark on our culture, at least in the short term, who knows? -- mkim, 12:39:54 05/13/11 Fri [1]

[> Iīm not superstitious. I like black cats, no matter which direction they are coming from....I didnīt even notice today was fri 13 until someone pointed it out to me in ballett class. Now I know why I kept stepping onto my own feet, I blame the date! -- Jam ...I didnīt break anything, so thatīs actually some good luck!, 16:50:03 05/13/11 Fri [1]

[> Maori believe that when you wear ponaumu (greenstone/jade), you may never buy it for yourself, it must always be a gift, and it must be blessed before you present it, or duing the presentation of it. Once you put it on, it shouldn't be removed as it becomes warm and houses part of your spirit. -- Katiegirl, 00:31:36 05/14/11 Sat [1]

[> superstition and fundamental christian don't mix well - but I think for the average person the tell would be in the US 13 is an unlucky number - in some south american countries 13 is a LUCKY number- it's all in the perceptions - believing is usually very closely related to receiving -whether it's positive hopes or negative fears. -- chris k, 09:08:08 05/14/11 Sat [1]

[> I'm mildly superstitious for things like Friday the 13th (I'm always relieved when Saturday rolls around), but my real superstition is about saying things are good, and risking that they suddenly change. For example, when people ask, "How's Peter (DH) doing?" I always answer, "So far, so good." He is doing well now, a little past a year from his bone marrow transplant, but I feel anxious even writing that, for fear it will somehow change something! A friend of mine says that's an Irish superstition, though I'm not Irish. -- Deemus, 11:48:46 05/15/11 Sun [1]

[> I don't put much stock in them, but I sort of agree with Deemus above about what you say. I often jokingly say that I've "jinxed" myself when I make a positive declaration. I also hold to the theory that taking an umbrella with you will prevent it from raining, i.e. it only rains when you DON'T have an umbrella. Similarly, running the sprinklers is a surefire way to MAKE it rain. -- JAG Junkie (Ronda)--and changing lines at the store will make your old line go faster., 17:01:54 05/15/11 Sun [1]

[> [> Sprinklers, washing the car.... Yep. Who needs a rain dance when you've got those? I wonder if farmers wash their cars when their crops need rain? -- The Chief, 18:16:20 05/15/11 Sun [1]

[> I'm not superstitious (my bd is on the 13th,) in the sense that something mysterious or magical will bring bad luck. However, incidents, which have no relation or bearing on a particular action, gain significance merely because we find out about them in the context of our "bad luck." e.g. 9/11 the date, being the emergency call number. Of course, that might have been planned...I don't know. However,(inside) -- Cece, 14:18:23 05/17/11 Tue [1]

ironic things do happen by chance, and as I don't want to dwell on the irony after something bad has happened to me, I don't invite that kind of speculation. As for black cats and open umbrellas, they are just interesting folklore, imo. All in all, I am a skeptic about all things that are illogical, improbable, and/or can't be proved to a high degree of certainty.

For the longest time, whenever my mom & I were on the phone, her other line would click-in and it would be my brother. ALL. THE. TIME. It got to the point where the call-waiting would click and I would sigh and say, "Tell Bruce I said 'Hi'." Now, there was no way for my brother to know when I talked to my mom. We're not genetically related or were ever that close "in spirit" so it's not like it could be accredited to some "kinship" thing. It was just a regular coincidence.

Also, when I was in HS & college, whenever I would talk to my BFF on the phone, she would end up having to go to the bathroom. That got to the point where I would call her and say, "go to the bathroom, then call me back." LOL

I dunno... maybe it's something about me and phones! LOL

[> [> [> [> My grandmother and I used to always call my mom at the same time. But I think that was mainly due to the frequency of Granny's calls. Statistically, it would be unlikely that I could call Mom and NOT have Granny calling at the same time because she called all the time! LOL -- JJ (Ronda), 03:45:40 05/18/11 Wed [1]

[> [> [> [> [> Haha, me and my sister ALWAYS call our mother at the same time....and we used to meet up in the bathroom (or in front of it) in the middle of the night, too. Do not discout the full moon, I tell you from several night shifts at the hospital during full moons, the house goes crazy. Every time. Btw, over here, the decline in births correllates almost exactly with the decline in storks.... -- Jam, 08:22:13 05/18/11 Wed [1]
