Subject: Checking In

Hey Everybody,

I have been absent for a long time from these boards (my apologies!), busy with work and life happening... But I wanted to check in and say Hi to everybody!

I have actually moved from Germany - I now live in Nashville, TN!! I love it here (even though it's been only a few weeks), have a great job and the town is awesome! If any of you live in the area, or have been here on vacation, let me know if you have any tips about the town and the area (sightseeing, shopping, the works), I really appreciate it!
I hope y'all are doing well!

XOX

[> Welcome to America! It's been a long time since I've been to Nashville, so most of my advice is outdated. LOL The only thing I can say, is you should visit the Opryland Hotel. I haven't been since they restored it after the flood, but it was AMAZING before, so I'm sure it's still a great place to visit. -- JAG Junkie (Ronda)--Good to see you here again!, 20:22:50 05/18/11 Wed [1]

[> [> Thanks JJ! I've heard that too; I'll definitely go there some day! As far as I've heard, it's been restored since the flood; the huge Opryland Mall however still won't be open again until next spring. -- Colie... hey JJ, we might make it down to Florida some day. :-), 07:42:51 05/19/11 Thu [1]

[> Are you the 'Colie' that has written so many many wonderful ff's?I've never been to Nashville -- only got as far as Chatahoochie. It's a different place than Germany, for sure. Good luck and much success with everything! -- mj, 23:42:51 05/18/11 Wed [1]

[> [> Yes mj, that's me! Thank you for remembering and the compliment! I have not given up writing ff, but have been less than inspired. Maybe again someday. :-) -- Colie, 07:39:04 05/19/11 Thu [1]

[> well - the last time two times I was in Nashville it was for a convention at the Gaylord and didn't see much else but that - I remember very little from my last real visit 25 years ago. I do remember staying with a friend for almost a week and thinking what a lovely city and wondering why they built that replica of ... was it the parthenon? But I'm sure you'll be happy there. -- chris k, 07:52:24 05/19/11 Thu [1]

[ Edit | View ]

[> [> Hey Chris, yes it's a replica of the Parthenon. Nashville considers itself the "Athens of the South", though why they chose the Parthenon, I don't know. -- Colie, 20:15:05 05/19/11 Thu [1]

[ Edit | View ]

[> [> [> I second the recommendation to visit the Parthenon. It's actually based on drawings of the real Parthenon made by a gentleman who visited it and made meticulous drawings of it before it was damaged in war. It was originally built as the main symbol of the Southern Exposition - not unlike a World's Fair, sort of Nashville's Eiffel Tower. As for the "Athens of the South" nickname - Nashville has 7 or 8 universities, so is a seat of learning. If you are looking for a fabulous restaurant - try the Acorn. -- Ann, 20:35:32 05/19/11 Thu [1]

[> Welcome to America! I've been to Nashville, but aside from what others have already mentioned, I don't have any particular recommendations. However, I suggest that you go to a motel and pick up some brochures of places to see in the area. They usually have racks of those things in the lobby. -- Lee, 08:33:37 05/19/11 Thu [1]

[> Don't miss all the music venues downtown! The BlueBird Cafe, Tootsie's Orchid Lounge, the Exit/In, the Wild Horse Saloon, etc. You never know, you might catch a big or rising star at a gig! A show at the Ryman is a must, and the Grand Ol' Opry, too. Check websites for upcoming shows/artists. Not all music in Nashville is "country" either. If you like music, you'll LOVE Nashville! -- The Chief, 10:46:32 05/19/11 Thu [1]

[ Edit | View ]

[> [> Yes I've already strolled bit downtown; there's always life music, every day, playing in all those places, it's great! I'm not a big country music fan but I'm excited about all the options! -- Colie, 20:18:09 05/19/11 Thu [1]

[ Edit | View ]

[> [> [> There's a lot more to "country" than you might be aware. It's not all "twangy" stuff anymore. Much of it resembles 80s top-40 pop/rock now. Try to find a "songwriter's showcase" night at the Bluebird, etc. This is where you'll hear the good stuff. -- The Chief, 22:43:17 05/19/11 Thu [1]

[> Colie, I have two sons and a daughter-in-law in Nashville. We have visited them many times. Love it there. Visit Franklin and Brentwood. Still have to get to the Starbucks in Brentwood where Keith Urban goes for coffee! Enjoy Nashville, it's beautiful. -- Martian Barb ready to get back to Nashville., 18:34:33 05/19/11 Thu [1]

[> Hey Colie, my DH twice went on a week's course at your company's office in Antioch. I went with him in 2005, and met up with Southern Harmies--old poster PB from Clarkesville, Spud, who came in from Memphis, and Carrotts, who came up from Huntsville, Alabama. I thought it would be hot (in Nov,) but I was freezingly wrong...LOL. -- Cece (Welcome to North America Colie!), 13:24:42 05/23/11 Mon [1]
