I will comment on your answer. I worked over 45 years, was self reliant and a productive member of society. I was very independent, never took anything from anyone that I didn't work for and paid my taxes. I also paid into social security all those years just in case something happened and I could not work and support myself. I always gave my fair share to the community. Then my health went south and my productive days were over.

How dare you suggest that someone like me is leaching off society. This is not a pity party but exactly what would you suggest I do? I have no living relatives or significant other. I have no retirement left. I live from paycheck to paycheck on SSD. The day I had to go to the food pantry was one of the worst days of my life. And a week ago I had to face the possibility of no income because the Tea Party was threatening default. No way to pay rent or put food on the table. You state the social programs would be fine if they were temporary. So people like me should just dig our graves and jump in. Damn you and the Tea Party. It's people like me that the Tea Party so conveniently ignore and just want to write off. I guarantee we will not ignore the Tea Party the next election after election after election.
