Something like your story happened to me. One day in 1959 I joined the Lismoria in Princess Dock. being from Islay and therefore non Glsgow I was allowed to berth aboard. I turned to the following morning (no breakfast) and at Smocko decided to run ashore for something to eat at a local cafe/ On my return I was met at the top of the gangway by the mate who promptly sacked me on the spot for being 10 mins late. That afternoon I went back to the Pool and told them my story, and was told that I had to attend a meeting of some sort( I cannot remember what it was called). Anyway I was told to go back to the desk and take any ship I was offered. That same night I was on the London train to join the British Vision at Isle of Grain. I suppose that Mate did me a favour afterall I thought I was better off sunbathing in the Gulf than crossing the North Atlantic in the middle of winter.
