you should adjust the brightness button on your monitor.

I sold a 20X30 copy of that image last Wednesday unframed for $265. yesterday I was asked to hang it in a gallery in Truro. The gallery is even chipping in for the frame.
It's not too dark.

The Canadian Government is considering changing one line in our national anthem because what we've been singing all these years is sexist. here's the lyrics:

Oh, Canada
Our home and native land,
True patriot love
In all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts
We see thee rise,
The true, north, strong, and free.
From far and wide
Oh Canada
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land
Glorious and free.
Oh, Canada we stand on guard for thee,
Oh, Canada
we stand on guard for thee.

They want to change
'In all thy sons command'
to
'In all thy persons command'

am I the only one who finds this idiotic?

They seem to relish this little secret society of theirs. Never had to answer to any inferior US government officials before. 52 dead Americans, and no remorse from them. Now they won't divulge the contents of the black boxes in any of the crash cars. Too superior to lower themselves to us inferior Americans.

Seems too that the little 25 cent wedge for the gas pedals isn't working either.

And the hole keeps getting bigger. The lies and denials keep piling up, and the lawsuits and recalls keep coming.

What goes up must come down. And all the little people that you stepped on on your way up the ladder will be waiting for you when you came down. Welcome to the United States Chairman Toyoda. I hope you have a nice visit. Asshole.

haven't seen it since I was a kid but I remember it:

In life, there are only two things to worry about.
Either you are well, or you are sick.
If you are well, there is nothing to worry about.
If you are sick, there are only two things to worry about.
Either you get well, or you die.
If you get well, there is nothing to worry about.
If you die, there are only two things to worry about.
Either you go to Heaven or Hell.
If you go to Heaven, there is nothing to worry about.
If you go to Hell, you'll be so damn busy shaking hands with friend, you wo't have time to worry.

I'm ok. I am grateful for having friends who worry about me. Thank you. But I am quite used to being sick. It gets pretty old sometimes though.

RANDLEMAN, N.C. (AP)—Dale Earnhardt Jr. has donated $1 million to the Victory Junction camp for children with serious illnesses.

The donation will be used to build The Dale Jr. Corral and Amphitheater at the camp that honors the late Adam Petty. Earnhardt made it to kick off Victory Junction’s “Keeping the Dream Alive” campaign.

Petty was killed in 2000 during a practice session at New Hampshire International Speedway. He had a passion for trying to help seriously ill children, and his parents started the camp in his memory.

Earnhardt says the donation was in memory of “my buddy, Adam Petty,” whom he called genuine and a great friend.

I'll tell you something about hockey. You may find this interesting...
It isn't a sport in Canada. There is nothing in Canada that is more important than hockey. Period. The game was invented here. The first game was played in Nova Scotia, although a town in Ontario makes the same claim.

In 1972 when I was 12, Alan Eagleson, the president of the NHL Players Association made a deal to play a series of 8 games against the Russian national team. Those guys were all in the Red Army. 4 games were played in Canada and the next 4 in Russia. We thought we were going to kick their commie asses right back to Moscow.
30 seconds into the first game, Canada was winning 1-0. We lost that game 7-3. We were rather rudely introduced to two gentlemen named Kharmalov and Tretiak. The two best hockey players in the world... but we didn't know that when the series started. We'd never even heard of Kharmalov and a Canadian scout said the goalie Tretiak 'couldn't stop a beachball.' Of course what we didn't know was that he was scouted the morning after he got married.
Anyway, the point is, during that September in 1972, Canada just stopped. I mean stopped. Every game in Russia took place while school was in and every day they brought tv's into the classrooms and we didn't have to do any school work. Practically every business with a storefront window, put a tv in the window so people on the street could stop and watch the games. The government even stopped.
I can tell you exactly where I was on the afternoon of September 28, 1972. They brought the tv into my classroom and my best friend's class came in to watch the game on our tv. We were sitting on my desk in room 5, Winona Public School. And the place went insane when Paul Henderson scored with 34 seconds left to give us the series.
As a nation, nothing is more important to Canada than hockey. Doesn't matter if you're right wing, left wing, cowboy, Indian... whatever. It doesn't matter. Hockey is the one thing we all have in common. Its a religion.

My problem with Team Canada? My favorite player is on Team USA. Phil Kessel. But Canada and the team come first. Sorry Phil... actually I'm not.

Funny thing... Stasny on team USA.. his father is the only player to play for three countries. Peter Stasny was born in Czechoslovakia and played for them in the Olympics. Then he defected to Canada and played for Quebec in the NHL and became a Canadian citizen and played for Canada in the Canada Cup. Then when Czechoslovakia split, he held Slovak/Canadian dual citizenship and when he didn't get picke dby Canada for the Olympics, he played for the Slovaks. Now his son is playing for the US.

And Zak Parise is the son of JP Parise, who was a star for Team Canada during the first real international series, Canada against Russia in 1972.

But they won their game and celebrate din public graciously. They shook hand swith the Americans after the game and they gave them an ovation when they got their silver medals. The 'bad' took place in what they thought (stupidly) was private. Nothing is private and they should not have done that.

The Pope explains the situation to the administrative clerk in hell,

"However", the clerk explains, "it would be 24 hours before it can be

Next day the Pope is called and Hell's staff bids him farewell.

On the way up, the Pope meets Tiger Woods coming down from heaven and
they stop to have a chat.

"Sorry about the mix up", apologizes the Pope.

"No problem" replied Tiger Woods,

Pope: "I am really anxious to get to heaven"

Tiger: "Why is that?"

Pope: "All my life I have wanted to meet the Virgin Mary"

yes that kid may indeed be a great figure skater. I didn't say she wasn't. What I did say was that she has no buisness skating for a country that she hasn't even visited, and yet has citizenship.

Are you telling me that in the entire country of Georgia, there isn't a single woman who can skate as well as someone who wasn't even good enough to make the American team?

here is the point: the Olympics are about sportsmanship. Thats it. If a country cannot enter one of its own citizens... if it has to buy a citizen (payment is entry into the Olympics) than that country should not be permitted to enter.
Do you think for one minute that that girl would become a citizen of georgia if she wasn't promised entry into the Olympics? Not a freakin chance. Do you think she's going to move there? She hasn't even visited the country!

At the Calgary Olympics, Jamaica entered a bobsled team. Everyone laughed at them. Jamaica didn't stand a chance and they had never entered an athlete in the Winter Olympics in ANY sport. But some Jamaicans did it. They could have done what Georgia did... promise citizenship to Canadians or Americans who didn't make out national teams, but they didn't. They entered a pure Jamaican team. They got their asses handed to them, but by God they did it honestly.

You are wrong about that skater belonging in the Olympics. She wasn't good enough to make her own country's national team.
Remember something... that kid who got killed on the luge? He wasn't good enough either. He had never once raced at that level but he was all georgia had so off to the Olympics he went and he got killed.

If you can't make your own country's national team, you have no business being there.

How would Americans feel if they won the Gold medal in men's hockey, and then discovered that every player on the team was a Canadian? Same thing.

That is why they do it. Now I know you probably dont consider figure skating a sport but it it the pure love of what they do. If they didnt skate for another country they would never get that "shot". They would never advance.

That 15 y/o skated well beyond her years and maturity. I believe she desreves to advance in the sport she loves. This is the only way that would happen.

It's just like car racing either you "buy" a ride to get the chance. OR you are such a remarkable driver that you get discovered. Problem is, there are more remarkable drivers than the sport supports. They are out there, the furture jeff gordons, kyle busches...they just dont have the wallet.

That isn't the only one, Al. There are Canadians on teams from other countries and during the opening ceremony, they mentioned four or five others competing for countries they were not born in.

I agree there is somethign wrong... even worse in the case of the figure skater. How can you become a citizen if you've never even been there? You watch... she will become an American citizen again when this is over.

Idiots.

You know, there are a lot of Canadian kids... 19, 20, up to probably 25 years old that are really good hockey players but not good enough to make a living at it. So they go to Europe and play in some obscure European leagues. I know a guy in Ontario who played in germany for years. Got pays $40,000 a year, free aparetment. Volkswagen sponsored the team so he got a free lease on a VW while he was there. He played there for 5 or 6 years. Now I can live with him being asked to play on the German national team. He's earning his living there. I don't like a Canadian playing against Canada but I can at least understand it. But to become a citizen of a country you've never been to, just to participate in the Olympics?

You know what this will open up right? Outter Mongolia will offer a hundred grand to twenty decent Canadian hockey players and then send them all to the Olympics in 4 years.

Sheer stupidity and it ought to be illegal.

but Al still watches figure skating.

He said its the most boring sport on the planet so I mentioned football and baseball. The argument went on for quite a while and finally, Kevin said, "You and I are never going to agree on any sport except hockey."
So I said, "Women's beach volleyball."
He said, "Ok.... and synchronized swimming."

So we came away agreeing on three sports.

Al, you are a single man. Tell people you were watching hockey, even if you were really watching figure skating. At least if I watch figure skating I can say it was already on when I cam ein the room and I couldn't change the channel because of my mom. You have no excuse.

Then, they mention that Allison is from WARREN MICHIGAN (10 minutes from here) and has never even been to Georgia. The Georgian government pushed through her citizenship just in time for her to compete.

I recall Schrader waving his arms for help when he was at Dale's car. Maybe, maybe not. I agree that the slow ride was out of respect, for sure. At work, someone asked me who I thought the next "Dale" would be. I just shook my head and said that wasn't going to happen. That's like asking who the next Elvis, or Reagan......there are no more. The "sub-modern" era of Nascar ended on that day as well.
Subject: The ambulance was slow

because there was no need to go fast. Remember when Schrader looked in the window? He just walked away. If Earnhardt had been hurt, Schrader would have stayed there. And afterward a reporter asked him how bad Earnhardt was hurt and Schrader said, "I'm not a doctor."

Earnhardt, no matter what NASCAR claims, died at the race track just like Tony Roper, Kenny Irwin and Adam Petty because every one of them died of a basular skull fracture... and that kills you instantly. NASCAR just doesn't like having people die at the track.

At least in open wheel there's no hiding it. When Greg Moore was killed he was killed dead right on the spot. No doubt about that. But nascar doesn't do that.

Personally, I think that ambulance left the track slowly out of respect for earnhardt because that driver knew Earnhardt wasn't coming back.

I can say something I've thought for years.

Don't you find it odd that Richard Petty won exactly 200 races? Granted, it's unlikely that anyone will match 199, but Johnson is capable of it.... but isn't it odd that Richard won his 200th race, with an illegal engine and then never won again?
Isn't it possible that France and Petty cut a deal that day? Richard got #200 in front of the President... his car was illegal, but he got to keep the win. he made history, but he never won again. hhmmmmm

Remember what Knaus said on the radio? "Are you sure it's flat?"

"Its tearing the car apart!"

"Ok, come on in then."
My point is, I don't think Knaus was ready to throw in the towel just then... but to play devil's advocate again.... what would be the point in a top teir team cheating at Daytona? hear me out here....

Let's use Joe Nemecheck as an example. He started at the back and no one expected him to get a top 30. At the end of the race they tear down to top three cars plus 3 or 4 cars chosen at random. So at the end of the race, assuming Nemecheck was still running, he had about a 1 in 10 chance of having his car torn down for post race inspection. pretty good odds that it wouldn't be. So let's say Nemecheck uses TC in order to finish higher... not because he stood any real hope of winning... even he is smart enough to know that wouldn't happen... But he finished 43rd. Lets say he missed his accident and the TC allowed him to finish lets say 35th. That means he'd have made about $30,000 more than he did. That would mean he'd be able to make another race and if he did that all year, he could theoretically make all of the races on the winnings he earned as a direct result of moving up a few spots each week.
He sure as shit wouldn't wan tto win a race. remember when Petty won his 200th race. He was celebrating with Ronald Reagan and the news guys and all. DW knew somethign was wrong and he asked if he should stick around and France told him to leave. Petty was called outside and told the engine was illegal. Petty got to keep the win but lost his purse and points. Later Petty said if Maurice had told him the engine was illegal, he'd have finished 2nd or 3rd and no one would have known.

And that is my point. If Nemecheck used TC to move up a spot or two I bet he could get away with it all year. But if Johnson won a race with it, they'd catch him. And don't say they wouldn't because both Knaus and Letarte have been suspended for cheating before. So everyone knows they've done it and that they're capable of doing it again.

So what would be the point of Knuas using it in a race he wa scapable of winning, knowing full well they might find if during the tear down?

Now remember what I said, the TC device is about the size of a dime and can be turned on and off from a source outside the track so the chances of getting caught would be slim. But if they did get caught.... even Hendrick's money couldn't pull a rose out of Chad's ass....

Johnson got 58 points on Sunday. He's 132 back of the leader.
Keep in mind that I like Jimmie Johnson. Can't stand his crew cheif, but I like Johnson...

so he pulled out early. Got a grand total of 58 points, but he was only about 3 laps behind Newman. Thats 3 points if he could have come out and done four more laps. Why didn't he?
I'll play Devil's Advocate here... I don't think Hendrick would risk cheating, although I have no doubt what so ever that Knaus would if he thought he could get away with it.

So let's suppose for a second they did cheat. Is Johnson/Knaus really good enough, or arrogant enough, to say, "We can write off the Daytona 500 because we know we will make those points back later?" Johnson has been know to have some bad luck.. wrecks mostly, but bad luck. But by ducking out and going home early gives them one benefit... their car doesn't get torn down and inspected after the race because it's already off the property.

I'm just sayin.

there was a guy.. I forget who it was now but it was a crew chief from a major team, interviewed a couple of years go. He said that he had been approache dby a manufacturer... 'do you want traction control?' The thing was smaller than a dime and fit soemwhere under the dash. It was totally controlled by a cell phone.. turning it on and off could be done from China if they wanted too.
That crew chief said he turne dthem down flat but that he knows for a fact that teams bought it.

That was a couple of years ago. You can bet your ass that they have gotten smaller and easier to turn on and off too.

Guaranteed, someone is using it. I seriously doubt that Rick Hendrick would allow it. If they were ever found out, that would be the end of them. But I do think that smaller teams are using it. When you see a one-car team, or a part time team qualify or race way above their own talent, thats who is using it.
I have a distinct feeling that someone you like used it. Gilliland in the Nationwide Series. He was the only Nationwide driver to win a race that year. He was immediately given a Cup car and what did he do with it? He got one or two poles and thats it. I think his case is one where TC could have been used that one time.

This is rich.... Toyota is now set to have a recall of 2009 and 2010 Corollas... th best selling car in the world. This one could get expensive since it's for power steering and every Corolla has it.... but... there are going to be Senate hearings on this whole mess and Washington is demanding the head of Toyota USA be there to answer questions. They also want the president of Toyota... that would be the little Japanese bastard, to be there. That 'gentleman' said last night that he will not be going to the US to answer any questions from anybody.

Now, if I was Barack Obama, I would issue this statement, "The United States Government is holding hearings to decide whether or not Toyota products are safe enough to be sold in the United States. If it is decided that Toyota quality does not meet the standards set forth by this Senate Panel, than Toyota will no longer be welcome in the United States. Whether or not Toyota officials choose to attend those hearings and answer questions will have a direct impact on our decisions."

Then they'll make the road courses faster by taking the turns out of them.

spekaing of road courses... you know what someone ought to do?
Build a track the size of daytona. 200,000 seats in an oval shaped grandstand... But have the track as a road course. Hills, valleys, turns, sand, everything. So every person in the grandstand can see every inch of the road course. Fans would have their brains explode because they'd have too much to see. if they made it absolutely safe, no one would do it. Those people are adrenalin junkies through and through. There is no other explanation for participating in that sport.

I will also guarantee this.... I don't have enough interest in the Olympics to know this... but wherever the next Winter Games are held, their track will be faster. It may indeed be safer, but I guarantee, it won't be slower.

That said, I have always been against the nascar policy of slowing cars down. If you don't want to go fast then take up knitting. But when you're sitting on a sled that probably weighs 3 pounds, and going 154 miles an hour three inches off the ice, than yeah, I think maybe its time to slow them down a little bit. But to do that would mean no more world records and that would spell the end of luge as an Olympic sport. So I don't know what the answer to it is.

A Georgian luge slider was killed this morning. CTV news debated all day whether or not to show the tape and they finally deicided to tonight. The guy was doing 144 miles an hour at the instant of the crash. A former Canadian slider was interviewed tonight and he said he'd been involved in the sport since the 1980s and he has seen a lot of crashes. he said he's seen boards leave the track but this is the first time he had ever seen a person leave the track.
I saw the tape. he was cartwheeled out of the track and slammed into a steel post. He never even twitched after he hit. They did CPR and flew him to a hospital in Whistler, but I am absolutely sure he was killed instantly.

I am not sure that a country whose Olympic team has exactly 9 members, can possibly be experienced enough to compete at this level. The slider who was killed had never competed at this level. One 'expert' said the guy had only competed in Triple A type events. If thats true, what business did Georgia have sending him to compete on the fastest and toughest track in the world? And why did the Olympic Committee allow him to compete?

This is exactly the same reason Danica Patrick is not allowed to drive at Daytona tomorrow. LACK OF EXPERIENCE ON THESE TYPES OF TRACKS. Why doesn't the IOC get that?

You all know I am not well... no I'm no sicker than I was last week, don't worry.... But you know that I am on a pension and that I will never be allowed to work again... and most of you know that I get about 80% of my nutrition from tube feeding. Thats how serious my health problem is.
My income tax papers arrived from the giverment the other day and with it was a large brochure for people with disabilities... here's one paragraph...
The Working Income Tax Benefit (WITB) is a refundable tax credit that allows low income individuals and families to keep more of their work related income, A disability supplement is also available to individuals who qualify for the Disability Tax Credit and meet the eligibility requirements.
So I called Revenue Canada and asked how I get the supplement, thinking, stupidly, that the supplement would be the same as the supplement that Mom gets on top of her senior's pension, which is about $6,000 per year. You know what that bitch said to me?
"You don't qualify because you can't work."
Excuse me?
"If you were able to work, but were paid $19,000 or less, we would give you a suppllement because $19,000 is the official poverty line. The Government of Canada would bring you above the poverty line."
Ok, wait a second. My pension is $10,044 per year. You will help someone who can work and get paid $19,000 per year because that's the poverty line and you don't want him there, but because you pay my $10,044, thats not poverty? Whats wrong with that picture?
"Sorry, Sir."
So I asked about getting help with my prescriptions.
"You just said your income is $10,044 per year. That is $44 above the line at which we issue drug cards."
What?
"Your income is too high to qualify for help with your prescriptions."
You're kidding me, right? Three weeks ago some asshole gets off a boat in halifax and is immediatelt given an apartment, a health card, a drug card, a social insurance card so he can get a job, and welfare until he finds one. And he hasn't paid taxes in Canada in his entire life and he isn't even here legally.... but I'm $44 beyond help? Are you people insane? I voted for this bunch of assholes.

"If you're going to get rude, I will hang up."
Are you going to help me?
"I can't."
Then hang the hell up anyway!

So I was on the phone to my federal representative, whom I voted for, and my local rep, whom I didn't, all day yesterday. Both were very helpful and have some ideas for help for us, and are getting back to me tomorrow and Monday.

But can you believe the givernment considers $19,000 the poverty line when someone else is giving you the money, and $10,044 above the poverty line when they are giving you the money? God Almighty.

think his punishment should be very fair. I'd let him stay in the military and make him go out on patrols with people the corporal served with. I bet on the first or second patrol they'd come back and say, "He tripped an IED. Sorry 'bout that."

But really, he will have to stay in uniform until his court martial. If he killed the corporal on base, he'll end up in Edmonton... thats our Leavenworth. If he murdered her off-base, he'll probably stand trial for both murders at the same time. My guess is if that happens, the air force will wash their hands of him and say, "You're on your own." The Canadian Armed Forces hasn't tried a murder case since the Airborne killed that kid in Somalia... the airborne was disbanded because of it.... And we haven't had a wartime murder trial since World War 2. The military may bump it to civilian court anyway, because they have more experience.

I am trying to figure out a way to mount the box camera to amy tripod. It doesn't have the threaded hole so I have to come up with something. I intend to use that camera with every photo shoot I do.

But I am actually going to try cheering for a driver this year. Two actually. Even though I have hoped certain drivers would win a race occassionally, I have never actually cheered or really gotten behind anyone whose last name didn't start with P and end with Y.

This year in Cup I am going to attempt to throw my considerable weight behind Mark Martin and Danica Patrick. I ain't buying their die casts, but I'll try to root for them.

and no. I do not have a favorite driver right now. I am hoping Kyle runs a race or two this year. If I win the lottery, I am leasing a car from Hendrick and put Kyle in it for a race or two.

backwards and still finished 6th. I'd say she done good. She is the only reason I am at all excited about this season.

During the ARCA race my aunt phoned me to say, "Six women in this race? Who is supposed to cook supper for the men? Those women need to get into the kitchen where they belong."

she hates women playing any sport that men play. When Manon Rheaume started in net for the Tampa bay Lightning, she about died. and that was one NHL game... pre season even. Can't imagine how she'd have felt if Rheaume played a whole season. This nascar season may kill my aunt.

Unlike Patty Moise and Shawna Robinson, Danica seems to "have what it takes" to compete. And I'm convinced she will help nascar fill empty seats in Nationwide. Granted we've only seen her in one Arca race, 6th place ain't too bad! She's smart enough to take the low road into nascar, rather than an insist on Sprint Cup or don't bother me attitude. That would have been her un-doing in fendered cars. So I'll enjoy watching her go up through the race and someday, who knows, she may even win the Daytona 500.

Danica Patrick can handle a big stock car.

yes, all Waltrips should retire.

interesting.. heard this on CNN this morning. 75% of all NFL players are either bankrupt or in deep financial trouble within 2 years of retirement. The NFL is trying to find out why.

I am going to tell them why right now. You have kids who can barely spell... I saw studies which show a huge percentage of US college students couldn't pass a grade 7 math test (the same study showed a huge percentage of Canadian college students couldn't find Canada on a freakin globe)... these kids are given scolarships to college for one reason... they can play football. Then the colleges make it easy for those studenst to cheat so they can stay on the team. Since 1990 479 of those studenst quit scool early just so they could enter the draft. Of those only 332 were drafted. This shows an incredible amount of stupidity on the parts of the studenst, their parents, the colleges and the NFL for encouraging it.
So these kids who are often not the brightest bulbs in the sockets to begin with, are suddenly given contracts for obscene amounts of money. They start living like movie stars and spending money like Howard Hughes. The problem is, their bodies cannot last that long. The average player in the NFL has a career of about 3.5 seasons. Some lucky ones have their huge contracts spread out over ten years or more... it's called deferred payments so they still make money after retirement but it means making less money while playing. Dumb ones with greedy agents and managers don't do that because agents and managers have their money deferred as well.
So you have these kids making millions for 3 and a half years, who suddenlt aren't making it any more. But do you think a 24 year old kid is going to give up being a celebrity just because his career ends? No. he's going to keep living that way and the people who surround him are going to keep sucking the life out of him until its all gone.
If the NFL really cares about its players, they need to start drafting players only after they leave college. That means every player becomes a college graduate. And I'd make sure they graduated with a degree in something important, so they can make money after football.
The NFL could do that starting next season if they wanted too. But they won't. Because getting the next hot thing is more important than what happens to an idiot kid after his career is over.
The NFL isn't alone. The NHL drafts 18 year olds right out of high school.

what was under the hood of that Chevy.
There seem to be no rules against this however... well sort of.... RPM ran a Dodge last season with a Ford engine in it for one race, prior to the race in which Elliott Sadler began running the Fords. But in that case, the car was clearly a Dodge and carried the Dodge logos. The engine was a legal Yates Ford engine.

When Larry, Al, David and I went to Bristol, during the Busch race David and I were wandering through the vendors area when we ran across a Toyota souvenier truck. It was a 5th wheel trailer, clearly marked with the TRD logos, but the truck hauling it was not a Toyota. It had the stock grill removed and one of those cool chrome chainlink grills installed with no logo. The tailgate was also missing. The fender logos were gone as well. But there was no question the truck was a GMC with dual wheels.

I have a photo someplace. I asked around when I got home and everyone was of the same idea: it was cheaper (despite embarassment) for Toyota to use an off-ther-rack GMC than to produce a single dual wheel truck for the racing operations.

To me, it seems that it would have been more intelligent to produce two or three duallies, even using GMC rear ends if necessary, than to blatantly use a GMC to haul their Toyota products to events that host 200,000 people every day for three days. Makes no sense but then as we see lately, Toyota isn't making a lot of sense.

This morning (this afternoon in Japan) the head of Toyota (the founder's grandson) called a press conference. But the conference was to take place in an hour, two hours outside of Tokyo. It was virtually impossible for reporters to get there if they hadn't been informed earlier. The conference is going on now and that little bastard is being asked easy questions and is avoiding difficult ones.

Now a 50 cent shim for the "sticking" gas pedals. These gas pedals aren't sticking, the are being depressed by a faulty ECU, much the same way the your cruise control "resume" feature works. Press the button and the gas pedal is electrically depressed to resume the speed you were set at. Only in toyota's case, these faulty ECU's can floor the car anytime, anywhere. That's why people can't get the pedals on the cars to "stick" to simulate the problem.

Thimk it's bad now, wait 'til the Feds land on this one. Shit will hit the toyota fan, and this might bankrupt them.

The ECU's, as you know, cost a bit more than the shims!

The Transportation Secretary has to backtrack. Earlier today he said "People who own a recalled Toyota should stop driving them."
Now his is going to release another statement in which he says he misspoke.... I just guess he did.
Think about it.... How many cars were recalled? 2 or 3 million, right? To get them all fixed will take months. 3,000,000 drivers told not to drive their cars by the US Government. So they rent cars until their's are fixed... and they will sue Toyota for those rental fees. that, my friends, could bankrupt a company.

Merely mistaken, lol.

I hate automatic computer updates. I disabled that long ago. The machine tells me and I decide when, much better.

Toyota should, and I believe will be punished. The government may slap a big fine on them, but the car buying public will be the ones who should make them pay by avoiding the product, plain and simple. In our business, customers who bring in japanese cars for service have a "chip" on their shoulder, much like the manufacturer, a holier than thou attitude. Can't stand it, but have to deal with them with kid gloves like they are special. If only they realized how stupid they were in the first place to own this junk, lol. But alas, we bite our tongues. But this recall deal should knock them down a few pegs, at least for a while.

Acording to the Transportation Secretary, Toyota had to be strong-armed into ordering the recall and there may be charges filed against them.

and you will be happy to know that car sales were up in January... for everyone except Toyota. Give that a couple of months and see if they get punished by the people for this mess.

I think they will look at it the same as when Ford, GM or Chrysler shuts down a production plant due to overstock. You guys remember when Ford went from the T-Bird to Taurus in Cup? Ford made a big to-do out of it and at the unveiling, the curtain went up and there sat a Cup taurus and a street Taurus. France had a shit fit because no one was ever supposed to see those two cars side by side because one had absolutely nothing in common with the other.

I remember when David and I visited Andy Belmont's shop. belmont said nascar was insane with some of their rules and he pointed out the body as an example. He said nascar rules demand that the hood, roof and deck lid all be steel and that they must be factory-supplied street peices. The problem is, the Taurus deck lid is aluminum. So it was impossible to follow nascar's own rule. You can't have a deck lid for a Taurus that was identical to the street version, and still be made of steel.

I will say that while I am not quite as anti-Japanese as you are, I am finding it more difficult to see their point of view. The problem the Japanese have, and this is historically and goes way beyond cars, they think they are superior to the entire world. Its in their psyche. Its like in that Tom Clancy book, the Japanese were offended when the US started to inspect every japanese car because they said their cars were built to much higher standards than American cars so they didn't need to be inspected the way American cars did. Its like that with everything the Japanese do. Its born in them... kind of a moral superiority that not matter what happens, they can't see past it. That was their downfall during the war and it will be their downfall again.

That said, if I am going to argue with friends, its going to be about something more important that the Japs.

Just that living and working where I do and doing what I do lends itself to a lot of conversation with car guys and dealer customers and friends, and hearing stuff that the rest of the country might here later. Around here, when the Big 3 does well, I do well, and work goes well, and house values remain steady, and people work and eat and pay their bills. So my anti Japanese carmaker stance isn't just based on the fact that I hate foreign cars, my existance depends on people buying "American". So I am biased, naturally, just like a guy living in Idaho would feel if people started buying imported potatoes. This toyota deal with the gas pedals won't solve any long term Big 3 ailments, but this area will get a boost for a while. I just wish it was based on people buying American for the right reasons, and not as a result of a toyota mess that's getting worse. But, selfishly, I'll take what I can get.

to agree with Al on this whole thing. It has turned into a coverup. I'm sure it began with the people in charge poo pooing the problem saying dumb Americans cant even pull their floor mats out of...Probably had a BIG laugh at our expense. Well? Nobody's laughing anymore.

Sending new gas pedals to the factories instead of the dealers implies that toyota cares more about resuming production than it does fixing dangerous cars already on the road.

TOTAL STUPIDITY.

they better get ready soon. If anyone else dies while they're making up their minds, Toyota may be toast.

You know what this reminds me of? Tom Clancy wrote a nodel a few years ago.... God I have it in a box but can't recall which one it was. This is really quite similar... I gotta find it.

A fictional car company in Japan is making the most popular car in America, and they are assembling them in the States. An American company submits a proposal to the company saying they can make gas tanks cheaper than the car company can make them in japan and ship to the states. The company refuses, saying the American tanks are of lower quality.
So Two of the cars are traveling along a US highway. One, the sports model, contains two younf women. The other contains a family of five. The sports car clips a tractor trailer and causes an accident and the fuel tank explodes. The family crashes into it and everyone burns to death.

The Japanese do not take responsibility for it so an American senator gets a bill passed. This is whats amazing. The new bill doesn't ask for anything except equal treatment. They want every single Japanese car brought into the US to be treated exactly the way every single American car is treated when imported into Japan. Which means that every single Japanese car has to be inspected from bumper to bumper, as it is taken off the ship and before it can leave the shipyard. So all of the carcarriers are now sitting at anchor outside of every American port. No ships are heading back to Japan for more cars and cars are piling up at japanese shipyards. Finally the Japanese car companies have to stop production, throwing every single Japanese auto worker out of work.. as well as everyone who supplies car companies and everyone who supplies companies who supply car companies.

Of course, in the book Japan declares war on the United States again. But they lose again. This situation with Toyota just reminded me of that book. I gotta read it again.

Have been put up all over this area for months now. Maybe they are new for other parts of the country. They are REALLY popular on Woodward Avenue. Just a blur though for toyota drivers going way to fast to read them, lol.
