Subject: My 13 yo ds is competing at worlds for the 1st time. I'd like to get him a small gift to remember the occasion - he's not expected to recall but I want him to know how proud we are. Ideas??

[> We have never bought something "special" but we have purchased the sweatshirts with the worlds logo on there. That is something that they can wear and show off. -- good luck to him, 04:57:55 03/16/09 Mon [1]

[> That is what I have done as well - we usually get a sweatshirt or tshirt with the logo. But if you want something more"lasting" (they grow out of sweatshirts after all) there are other options (see inside) -- Congrats and have a great experience!, 05:39:05 03/16/09 Mon [1]

but it will depend on what your interpretion of "small gift" is.

YOu could get a new ipod - the smaller ones are not so expensive (although I still consider them a bigger gift) and get the back engraved with his name and "Worlds 2009".

Or maybe one of the snazzy aluminum water bottles I have seen and get that engraved (that would be one of a kind - if he does water bottles, it would be something he would use a lot).

If he doesn't have a digital camera, that would be something else that would be great to have (especially if he will be traveling to majors in the future).

Or, if he wears cuff links with his dance shirt, maybe a new really cool pair of cuff links to commemorate the occasion?

Just some thoughts.

[> Slightly off topic but slightly on considering the question! Wouldn't it be great if the CLRG gave out patches. then a child could sew them on a dance bag etc. -- best of luck to all the boys at worlds (mine too!), 06:01:09 03/16/09 Mon [1]

[> [> I wish they did - our OIreachtas did once or twice, and I think they are grand. My kids have collected patches from our travels otherwise (they each have a comforter covered with them), and I -- wish we had them for dance events, 09:12:45 03/16/09 Mon [1]

[> Great ideas. I like the idea of inscribing something. Good luck to all the boys! -- OP, 04:28:46 03/17/09 Tue [1]

[> An engraved frame would be good, too. I'm a big fan of the pocketwatch. Old-fashioned, classy. Very cool -- Good luck to him!, 19:37:34 03/18/09 Wed [1]

[> I gave my son a crystal (rock) for his first worlds and he loved it. That was 3 years ago. He still calls it his lucky crystal. It was inexpensive and something he could hold in between dances as a sign of my support without me embarassing him with words. He often takes it to a feis if he is anxious about the comp (i find it next day when clearing out the feis bag) -- Good luck to your son, 10:24:25 03/19/09 Thu [1]

[> [> Great idea - my ds would like that too, I may have to get him one! Kind of a "worry stone" / good luck stone that doesn't broadcast itself at all. -- Might have to try that one!, 13:12:42 03/19/09 Thu [1]
