Went with a Dell Inspiron 15R for $588 (6GB/i5 processor/500GB). It has some good reviews for the price class. Fought to get windows 7 instead of shitty windows 8 too but ultimately paid $40 more to have the same machine have an older OS. It was a sacrifice I was willing to let my parent's credit card make. I appreciate everyone who chimed in (who was no one).

My american boss is throwing an american style BBQ tomorrow. Can. Not. Wait! I will be equipped with many a milk bottles to keep Lena happy long enough to get my fill.

I had a good talk with my boss and my new boss' boss. I initiated a review of myself and of the department and it turned out to be very productive. I'm going to be the first attorney to work in 2 patent groups to help unify things a bit more. I'll still be a primary licensing guy, but I'll be picking up prosecution cases and maybe managing a small patent portfolio. I also offered to start a monthly or bi-monthly (more likely) case law review on most recent decisions to help teach and stay current. My goal is to get my hands on a little bit of everything so to have more options when I leave. It's diabolical.

Joe, after you make partner are you VK for life? No need to answer on here but we do need to have a talk one of these days.
