have a great turkey day everyone. Joe, I am extremely jealous of your thanksgiving plans. The cold weather has settled in for only a couple weeks and I am already looking forward to the springtime. Id give anything to be able to play a couple rounds during this long weekend.

As for Ali, I am shocked she chose to play bray (who has underperformed all year) against a very good vandy d over mcgloin over an atrocious indiana defense.

Happy Turkey day everyone. I am heading to South Carolina to spend Thanksgiving with Ali's grandmother. I am hoping to golf a couple times down there with Ali's Dad. We are headed back to Philly on Sunday night.

Hafer, Ali's team lost because her starting QB was benched multiple times during the TEN game. The former TEN coach decided that he would coach his last game like he didn't care. This involved him benching his starting QB in a must win game. Needless to say, Ali was not happy.

We had a baby doctor visit today. Anatomy screening. So far the baby G-unit has all of his/her parts. Really excited to receive the good news today before the long weekend.

lukey, it's a good thing you told me about the fantasy college league as, the last time i looked, i was down 30 and ali had 3 guys playing and i only had 2. i was sure i lost. not sure how i won but it has to come down to me putting no time and effort into the league. i'm def trying that for next year's atown - psu league. what do we get for 1st/2nd?

wrt the big 14, i hear we are looking to expand it out to 16, which makes sense since that's pretty much the best # for a super conference. they should do the expansion now so they have the best pick of teams before another conference like the sec/pac whatever beats them to the punch. i also hear they are seriously considering a move to a 9 game conference schedule. i think they have to do it for the reason lukey said. also, i'm really happy about closer away games. watching them pwn md and only having to drive 30 minutes to do so is rad as hell. and, because they suck, we'll probably have our choice of good seats for the game. win win.

Unfortunately, I will not be making the trip back to the States for this glorious holiday. Each year we pretty much have to choose whether we will do our visiting over the Thanksgiving time period or the Christmas/New Years time period. This year it is the latter. This will most likely be the case every year because my parents are teachers, as is Kate's mom, and they have more time off over the winter break.

In any case, all is not lost. Tomorrow night we are going to one of the Marriotts after work that is known to play American football/sports. We will see! On Saturday, we are going to a pot luck turkey day dinner with some friends/ex pats.

Kate and I will be in the States from 12/19-1/2, and in PA 12/19-12/22 and 12/28-1/2. Let me know if anyone wants to get together during that time.

First, an early Happy Thanksgiving to everyone

It will be interesting to see if the B1G sticks at 14 or pillages the ACC and goes to a full on 16 teams. I like having easy road trips to away games at Rutgers and Maryland. If it sticks at 14, I wonder if the B1G will revisit the idea of playing 9 conference games again. If not, besides our crossover game with Nebraska (due to six division games, 1 crossover), we will see the other 6 teams in the other divisions twice every 12 years unless we play them in the B1G championship. At that rate, we may as well not be in the same conference as Michigan, Iowa (good riddance), etc.
--

Joe: How was the Barclay's center? I hear that it is a great place to see a bball game (steep, great sightlines). Send a vociferous acht Ali's way for my Hoyas. I was telling her on Saturday that my Hoyas were going to win, but she just wouldn't listen to me (Shabazz this, Kyle Anderson that).

Heaves: Are you heading Stateside for Thanksgiving?

Hafer: I'm not sure how your shitty team made the finals of the college fantasy league, but you may want to pick up a qb (not sure if anyone is really available) this week in case both Colter and Driskell are too banged up to go.

happy turkey week. bring on the clucker.

tony, i've heard conflicting reports about the latest chromebooks. i've heard they're great if you simply want to browse online, answer emails, etc (which you seemingly want to do). at the same time, if you want to do anything else, the experience is pretty lacking. i've used chrome (the os, not the browser) via parallels and like the experience but, again, you can't do a lot. so there ya go.

what does everyone think about the big 10/11/12 expanding with: 1) maryland; and 2) rutgers/ga tech/uva/unc??? i guess the terp board is voting at 9 this morning. i'm impartial, really. the big question is who do they add to get to 16 because that's where they would need to end up. i'd be fine with uva and unc but doubt they'd join. they also are completely outside of the normal big 10 footprint. whatever.

You're going to use a laptop that will HOPEFULLY remain stable for more than a week after downloading shit like porn on it.

Mac is the only stable platform that can handle porn. I've downloaded shit that I can all but guarantee you takes a flight from "fucked up" and goes about 50 miles south on my Mac and the thing simply giggles. 4 years later and it works awesome.

If you want to spend $250 more wisely, get an Asian hooker.

This post might be extreme, but goddamnit, someone's gotta keep this board interesting.

On a side note - I am very happy for you Vic, and am confident that regardless of what you decide to do, LuLu will be beyond exstatic(sp?).

Anyone have any experience with these? I'm thinking about getting one. It does what I need it to do (porn). I don't want a tablet because I want a full-fledged browser and I also want a pointing device. This thing is basically for chilling on the couch with. Plus it has remote desktop capabilities so I can still get to my laptop if I need to.

I am in a similar position and I am taking Rena to choose her ring. I wasn't sure if I was going to do that or not but the feedback I got from her family was that it was a wise choice. My only suggestion is do do a little research between diamond types, not just sizes. I saw that you can get a big diamond but if its shitty it won't sparkle nearly as much as a nice diamond that is smaller. The Jewler helped out a lot with regards to learning what questions to ask and I took it from there.

If you are going to do your own choosing, I would find out if the shape matters, and if so, what shape she wants. Kate specifically preferred an oval diamond. Then learn about the 4 C's here ( http://www.bluenile.com/diamonds/diamond-education ) and figure out what size diamonds fit in your price range. You can search blue nile to kind of get an idea. For color you probably want an H grade or higher, and for clarity VS1-VS2 or higher. Knowing the shape, color and clarity, you can then search what sizes fall in your price range. Then it's just a matter of finding the best deal. Markups are usually 3-4x. If you go to a smaller shop, you may be able to negotiate. The fancy, elite stores, not so much. The guy I bought mine from in Allentown might be able to help if interested. He's located near Cedar Crest and Tilghman (Vogts Jewlers). Oh...and congrats!

Call of Duty comes out today (but not for me). Who's getting it? It's black ops, which if I recall, is generally not as good as the main series.

The Walking Dead was a bit disappointing this week. It was just ok. But I guess not all episodes can be excellent.

Well the DVD player that we had in the play room crapped out. Since the xbox was going to go in there at Christmas, I am accelerating the procurement of a new Xbox so that we can continue to watch Cinderella. Of course this happens 2 days after I run the old rca cables behind my wall.

Regarding the PSU games, we are definitely getting jobbed by the refs. Not sure how we can do anything about that though. I think the team is handling it well.

Vic, Jen picked out her own ring. I just picked out the diamond. Other than that just learn about the 5 C's.

my only advice is to have a cousin who owns a jewelry store. that really helped in my "search" (aka she did everything).

to your second point, yes, i totally feel we are getting screwed more this year than in years past (even though we were screwed a lot in past years as well). it's a lot more blatant and, unfortunately, i don't see it changing in the near future. i was at caruso's family's place so i had to excuse myself to go into the bedroom before i let out my disagreement with the td that wasn't (but totally was).

as an aside, apparently the replay booth guy who upheld the call on the field is lovingly known in lincoln as cornhusker chuck (https://mobile.twitter.com/Dyedave/status/267414677322096640)... you can't make this shit up.

On a totally unrelated note, does anyone feel as if we are getting screwed by refs more this year due to what is most likely personal feelings towards us? I feel as if unless something is blatant, most of the time we are going to get the penalty called / not called against us. I even feel as if you can hear it in the announcers' tone that they feel the same way but obviously cant say it. During the nebraska game I spiked the remote on the ground and shockingly didnt break it, but the batteries went flying throghout the room. Lulu was not pleased.

back from florida. caruso, spawn, big gay frank and i went down to universal studios on thursday and met up with caruso's mom. she pretty much played the roll of babysitter all weekend long while the rest of us went to the park on friday. it's the off-season so we had very few lines and not too many annoying tourists. good times. saturday, we hit up the local outlets and did some damage. all i can say is that it's a good thing there isn't a jcrew outlet nearby. we then drove to tampa to caruso's house to spend the afternoon before heading out to ybor city (the only place worth visiting in tampa) for some boozing. sunday, we slept in a bit and then headed off to the bucs vs chargers game. we had seats behind the chargers bench so caruso enjoyed herself (up until them losing). then it was off to the airport to meet up with caruso's mom so we could get hanna. a short flight later, we were back up north.

wrt traveling with a baby, we had a great experience. our flight down was on airtran and they make parents w kids board in zone 3 so there really isn't a big advantage. lame. hanna slept the entire flight so that was good. yesterday, we flew back on southwest and got to cut to the front of the security line (which was long but not too long, but still). again, hanna slept on the flight so no one wanted to kill us for having a devil child. great success.

this weekend we are having caruso's pseudo sisters come down to babysit hanna while we see skyfall. can't wait.

Sorry about my absence from the board; I have been working (and will be in the future) 7 days a week as a result of Sandy.

Needless to say, NJ is absolute devastation. There are still some places without power; gas is still limited in some (but far, far fewer) places, and people's homes are destroyed, gone, or in very bad shape. Our main tech guy has spent the last week sumping out water and gutting his house. He had his first shower YESTERDAY. I spent the entire week in PA, shuttling both myself and containers of gas to NJ to give to Rena's family members and friends. We worked from 6:30am to 1pm on Sunday; and I was talking orders for water heaters, boilers, etc. all day Saturday. We had people in absolute desparation coming to buy generators from us, which we sold CHEAPER than anyone else (HD, Lowes, etc.), not because we sold shit, but we didn't feel it was the time to rip people off (like Lowes, HD, etc.). We actually made deliveries for people that couldn't take the generators (too big for what vehicles they had that weren't washed away). One of my outside sales guys actually got a hug from a crying woman that thanked him for "saving them".

To make things worse, we have more weather coming, and some areas CANNOT afford it at this point. Needless to say, I have had zero time for the board during the day, and am too tired to bother at night. Frankly, I could give a shit about the election right now; I am too focused on trying to sift through the mayhem this is post-Sandy restoration.

Sales have been and will continue to be beyond boisterous, but goddamn what a mess.

This isn't political, but a fucking fact. Christie looked like a stud through this, and Bloomberg looked like he always does; a fucking douche.

Unfortunately we endured all that pain and got nothing out of it. We each only consumed 3 oz worth, so maybe not enough to make us hallucinate. I thought for a moment that something was going to happen, but I was probably just a little light-headed from inhaling the vapor coming off the drink, or my body was in shock from what I was trying to do to it. Also, I really hate licorice-flavored things and so that didn't help the cause.

I am actually hoping for the hilarity that would ensue from an Electoral College tie. This would lead to the House electing the President (Republican House = Romney) and the Senate electing the VP (Democratic Senate = Biden [note: Biden could not be replaced by Obama here; in the event of a tie in the Senate vote, Biden, as current VP, would have the tiebreaking vote]). Four years of a Romney/Biden pairing would be stupendous from a comedy perspective.

Given a tie, the other scenario would be an Electoral College voter being unfaithful and not voting as instructed by the state. The constitutional legal challenges that would follow would make Bush/Gore look like child's play.

The land of Czechs was great. Prague is a cute little city and 3.5 days there was the perfect amount of time to spend there. I think I mentioned the food is okay there, but we managed to stumble on a HOOTERS. We decided that under normal circumstances of 1) not living in Europe and 2) visiting a foreign country, that it would be bad form to eat at an American restaurant. But we don't have access to chicken wings here and this was an opportunity we couldn't pass up (because German/Czech food sucks...and I love me some wings!). So we dove right in and consumed 40 of their most delicious wings. It was a decision I would make over and over and over again.

We visited all the big sites there and the city was pretty neat at night all lit up. One night, Kate decided to stay in while my co-worker and I went bar hopping to experience the night life. Beer is super cheap! It cost about a euro for a beer (~$1.30), and 1.50 euro in a more clubby place. We usually pay about 3.50 euro here in Munich. The next day, and Before Hooters, we stopped at an Absinthe place. We felt like we had to try it being that absinthe is huge in Prague (or at least so we though). It was the worst thing I've ever had! It tasted like licorice-flavored gasoline and burned all the way down and bubbled in my stomach. The aftertaste was absolutely brutal. It's a decision I would not make again.

That's our little trip in a nutshell. We have nothing else in the works as far as European travels. I would like to go down to the Alps in a few weeks to try some skiing, but that will depend on the weather down there and how much snow arrives.

Sorry it took me a few days to answer, Hafer, but the nanny will be costing us $525/week (or about $600 once you factor in the FICA and unemployment taxes we'll have to pay for being an employer). Daycare with two kids would have been about $575/week and they won't take the kids if they are sick (which end up being days we have to take as vacation). All in all, we are very excited to have this convenience.

Yeah, I'll be getting it but not until Xmas. The last two were really bad but I dont think you can get worse. And I just can't quit it! Im intersted to see how this "reboot" works out...it has to be better...with new aliens and surprises too. Part of the problem with the Halo franchise is that Call of Duty is always released at the same time and those have been much better as of late. You have to choose which multiplayer to play since leveling up in COD is critical. Long story short-- I will get both.

Yes, we're in Prague. Super nice city and everyone speaks English. They almost expect you to speak English. It's nice not to have to worry about speaking another language for a few days. We walked around last night to see how the city is lit up. Today we are going to the Charles Bridge and to the castle.

No, not fluent yet. Sorry Hafer. I'm like you...it's tough to mister up the motivation to study after work. I have only 2 hours of class time per week through February. I need to start doing more.

jono, does an mpls network mean an underground wiring network for their power cables? that's what they really need. although, i must give them props for getting through sandy with 0 power outages (at least at my house).

care.com? i've never heard of this before. may be worth checking out if it works out well for you kids. make sure to keep us in the loop. caruso isn't the biggest fan of our daycare simply because: 1) it isn't her wathcing hanna; and 2) see 1. if you don't mind sharing, how much does it cost per week?

heaves, how is life in germany? i think you said you're off today thanks to another german holiday. lucky duck. are you fluent yet? seriously, i don't know why this interests me so much but i have to know (probably has something to do with my desire to be bilingual with no desire to put in the work to become so).

does anyone have any experience with t-mobile? i am thinking about jumping from verizon because: 1) they're uber expensive; and 2) they lock down all aspects of your user experience.

saturday is friendsgiving. can't wait.

I've missed you all. Dearly. Some updates as I remember them:

- Work is off to a fantastic start. I really, really enjoy it. However, I have not realized how easy I have had it all of these years. I am working harder than I have ever worked and mentally, it is a challenge. Just proves I did the right thing by getting out and moving into a place like this. My first client is Pepco Holdings (powering companies in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, AC, etc.) and we are implementing an MPLS network for them. Good stuff. Some other generalities of the new job: love wearing a tie everyday, everyone there is a youngish, an engineer (duh), and at very similar points in their lives as me which is a big change from what I'm used to.

- Heaves, we will accept any & all compliments on our kids behalves, so thanks for thinking Will could be cute, even when looking like mini-Hitler. We did go trick-or-treating tonight and man, was it fun! William was tentative at first, but got really into by the 15th house or so. I love Halloween so this was right up my alley. I was over the moon and he seemed to be happy with himself, too.

- Speaking of children- JOEY G!!! Congrats, buddy. I couldn't be more excited for you two. You are in for some awesome, awesome times. As I did w/ Tony & Jen, I applaud your patience and will power in waiting to determine the sex. I cannot wait to hear of your adventures over these next 25+ weeks.

- The NBA is back! I think I am just gonna splurge on the TV package. I would really, really love an excuse to just watch NBA games all night and what better excuse than "well, I did pay for these so..." As for the Lakers, relax guys. Remember when the 2010 Heat started 9-8 (or something)? Either the Princeton offense goes w/in 12 games or Mike Brown gets fired; either way and LA is going to be just fine (unfortunately).

- We are likely getting a full time nanny, starting in about 2-3 weeks. We put an ad out on Care.com and got >40 applicants. We narrowed it down to about 10 for phone interviews, which then got cut to 3 which we were going to meet in person. Two of the three never made it to the in-person interview b/c we were turned off by their references. We meet the third, which just so happens to be the #1 seed and has been the entire time (true story). tomorrow night. IF all goes well, she'll be getting an offer to be the nanny of 2 wonderful boys (as well as a part time house-keeper, errand runner, etc.). The dumbest part of this whole process was that Amy was literally eliminating nannies if they were too young & pretty w/in 5 minutes of getting the application. For shame.

- Glad to hear you and your families all made it through Sandy w/o too much damage. That did not seem like loads of fun to experience.

- Work internet rules prevent me from even looking at the board, let alone posting, during the day (among many other Internet-based restrictions) hence my late-night checking and posting. Not that you all care, but I figured I'd explain my lack of participation.

I really miss you guys.

I was thinking those exact things last night. Why LA hired Mike Brown in the first place is beyond me. The Lakers will likely beg Phil to finish out the season for the chance to get another ring.

Also, this was Steve Nash before the game. He looks very scary and gay.

KG shunning Ray Allen before the Heat game was pretty awesome IMO (and I like Allen and indifferent about KG).

Also, I hosted a Webex meeting with some colleagues yesterday. I was sharing my desktop to review some documentation and accidently shared the wrong monitor. The group got a 3 second glimpse of young child dressed in a Hitler costume. They're probably all wondering what kind of sick crap I'm into.

Vic, I too love the NBA. I was shocked when the Lakers hired Eddie Jordan as an assistant coach. He is Mr. Princeton offense. He is also Mr. Cannot Stay Employed in the NBA. This has disaster written all over it. Mike Brown will get fired before Christmas if this goes on for the first 10 games. You just don't put Steve Nash in the Princeton offense. When you have a PG like that, it is ridiculous.

Tony, does Audrey understand the concept of trick-or-treating?

As for the baby's gender, yeah we just want to be surprised at the end. It never really interested me to find out the baby's gender beforehand. We are going to convert the spare bedroom into the baby's room after Christmas. We are going to stay in the apartment one more year and evaluate our living options based on our work prospects. Ali will not be returning to full-time work after the baby. We are going to see if she can work out a part-time/contract position with her firm. If that doesn't work out, we are not as tied to the Main Line area.

is the the worst coach ever. If you put doc rivers in cleveland during the lebron james / cleveland era there is a 0% chance he leaves. Shit, he may have even had a ring already. I am starting to think you put any competent coach in cleveland during that time and there is a chance Lebron does not leave.

Did anyone watch that game last night? What the hell kind of offense were they running. Ok, Mike Brown you came up with this bright idea for a new offensive scheme in the offseason but once you bring in nash and howard, running a princeton offense makes absolutely zero sense. This is like USC deciding to implement the triple option.

That truck/underpass video is hilarious because at my client site down in shreveport they have pretty much exactly the same thing right outside their office. Last week when we were walking out at the end of the day we saw an 18 wheeler completely jacked up right in front of the underpass. It kinda looked like that big alien thing did after the hulk punched it in avengers. They told me that they will witness one of those around once a month, and thats just the frequency of ones that they see.

a lot of the same as tony said. we had tons-o-rain, tons-o-wind, and tons-o-nothing else. no power outages, no breaks in internet/cable. besides a tiny bit of water in the basement we really can't complain. the winds died down by 3 am (from 6-then had been pretty fun, we had regular gusts into the 80s). the biggest impact from the storm may be its impact on our ability to hunt down a turkey for friendsgiving this weekend. could be chicken for all...

Woke up this morning to chainsaw noises. Looked outside and saw that my neighbors tree had fallen into the street, perfectly blocking the road. Went outside to help with the cleanup, which wasn't bad due to the chainsaw. Also it was only part of a tree, so the biggest branches were maybe 10" diameter. So now I have a pile of tree in my front yard. I'm guessing it will be a week before that gets cleaned up.

Other than that, just a lot of branches on the ground. Never lost power or Internet luckily. It was definitely the windiest storm that I can remember.

Looks like the worst of things is over around these parts. My parents lost power last night but had it restored around 9am.

I showed Kate the board picture from across the room and she let out a squeal of delight, then asked "is that Jono's kid?" She then came closer and saw the 'stache and armband. I think it was at this moment she realized that it might not be Jono's kid, though it would be awesome if it was. Her defense was that she just thought it was a cut little boy in uniform. Clarification is obviously needed.

We had our first little snow here Saturday and Sunday. Boy did it get cold quick here. Today was a hight of 30. It should warm back up in to the upper 40's in a day or two. Just in time for our trip to Prague. We have another Germany holiday on Thursday so we are taking off Friday as well.

We hope all is well with Sandy knocking on your door. It looks like a direct hit to Baltimore and Philly. My parents are prepared for their basement to flood, like it always does.

Some good news...Tara, Ben and the 3 kids moved in with my parents. They were finally able to complete a short sale on their home. They are moving in with my parents for about 2-3 years to save money. They wanted to do this a year ago but couldn't get rid of their house and they couldn't afford to take too much of a loss. The short sale allowed them to push some of the loss to the bank. The next step was to foreclose. It's going to be a crazy few years with 4 generations living under one roof.

Jono - How is the new gig going?

I, too, have had long work weeks and was looking forward to this weekend.

Friday was A LOT of fun. I scratched my Cornea setting up a display at work and was wearing a jaunty patch for 18 hours. Also, scratch corneas do not feel good.

In other news, Rena and I have moved away from that townhouse I showed you because it was too small and too close to a landfill. Instead, we are going to look elsewhere for a house that we can live in for 5 years or so then sell it for a down payment on a much, much larger house.

Sandy is coming - Could be tons of flooding and damage. While it will be tragic, it will also be GREAT for our sales numbers. One bad storm can make a huge impact on our entire year's earnings. I am Two-Face about this: One side prays that the storm isn't severe, another can't wait for it to be.

The first time I was backroomed at the OG it was with a pretty average looking girl and her initial sales pitch was that she got $400 for a half hour and I had to buy two drinks for each of us @ $20 a pop and then tip her. (I did not pay this and left.)

I wouldn't be surprised if he went back there with a girl or two and just wouldn't leave. I remember thinking afterwards that being back there highly intoxicated and with money to blow could be problematic.

I may just have to stop by there in a few weeks. I wonder what the Thanksgiving day crowd is like...

i have an older mac mini before they ruined it by removing the cd/dvd drive. i have it in my living room attached to a 1tb external media storage drive and my tv. it's quite the nice setup actually.

the new mini ipad doesn't make sense to me considering it's only $60 cheaper than the regular ipad. i thought they would put more of a price difference in place between the two products.

i also don't get the new slender imacs. if you gave people the option to pick between a slender desktop and a retna display desktop i'm pretty sure they'd pick the latter. but whatever.

not much new with me. very much looking forward to this weekend. vic, your flight better not be delayed or i'll taint punch you.

I was out on the course a bunch this past weekend. On Saturday, I met up with the Landsdale Catholic guys at a golf outing in Harleysville.

I was in a foursome with Mike Foering and Matt Lukes. Both of those guys are doing well and they wanted me to pass their hellos along. They wanted to congratulate both Tony and Jono on their new additions. We played reasonably well and shot a -4. We just could not one putt. We weren't ever in trouble of getting a bogey.

On Saturday, my brothers, Dad, and I all went down to AC for some hang out time. We stayed at my aunt's and played golf. Played well despite 20-30 mph winds. I am really driving the ball well finally and I even got my first eagle. Of course, now that I said that I probably just jinxed myself.

I have a shitload of Sunday night TV to catch up on. I am trying to watch Dexter, Homeland, Boardwalk Empire, and Walking Dead this fall. Who is watching what?

It was a sad start to our weekend. Kate was still getting over a cold on Friday, so we pushed back the ribs a week so that we both can enjoy it. Instead, we ordered pizza and ice cream. The pizzas here are much smaller but just as expensive. I'm still searching for the best delivery pizza in town.

Saturday was a day at IKEA and two other shops that you wouldn't know (no offense!). By the end of the day, we walked away with 3 of IKEA's cheapest, yet functionally sufficient, wardrobes, a TV stand, 3 bathroom cabinets, a 1 m by 60 cm kitchen counter/cabinet unit for extra storage and counter space, a 7x10 rug for our bedroom, and 9 light fixtures. It was a huge haul and I had no idea how long it was going to take for us to put everything together. Surprisingly, it only took me two days to learn the answer. I took Monday off from work and we completed all the furniture construction by 6 pm yesterday.

We are finally in a position with all this furniture to put the apartment in the way we want it to be. The only thing remaining is to install the 9 light fixtures this coming weekend. This should not be difficult once I figure out how to read my German fuse box.

Saturday night we went out with some Germans. I ended up starting with a beer, then moved to vodka/cokes and then to rum/cokes as the night progressed. The liquor was pre-paid by the Germans, so it was all I could do to help them out. I'm so nice! This place had good burgers too. Germany is not known to have good burgers, but this place is definitely one of the two places I would go back to. Speaking of meat, one thing Germans are very poor at are steaks. They cut the meat far too thin to cook a steak properly (everything comes out well done) and I don't even bother looking at steaks on a menu.

Jen's Mom has been in town since Thursday. She has been more than helpful by holding Claire. I don't know what we would do without her. Oh wait I do know. We would put Claire in the fucking nap nanny which is what we bought it for. Thankfully even Jen is starting to realize that having her mom around is not as much help as she thinks. I was also pleasantly surprised when I heard Jen say that she doesn't think we will be going to Erie for Christmas. She finally realized what it takes for us to take 2 small children across the state versus her catching a ride with her son and heading our way.

Now that that's out of the way.
Went to Pumpkinfest on Saturday and did the hay ride and farm animal thing. Cute pictures were acquired.

Claire got baptized on Sunday. Had a nice lunch afterwards. I DVR'd the Eagles game and then spent a couple hours watching that debacle. Our O-line is embarassing.

Evan, those are some nice townhomes! They remind me a lot like the townhomes in my previous Arlington neighborhood. Good rental properties too when you finally want to move out and use Rena as your personal Joo replicator.

I was serious about your bachelor party being in Germany, though. Otherwise, I may only make it to your wedding.

I have done absolutely nothing at work today. Back in the day, this would be somewhat upsetting since I would be behind in billable hours. But here it just means that I'm getting paid for doing nothing.

Interesting that you ask where the townhouse is; because it is the very location that may, in fact, make buy somewhere else.

So, here's the story:

Everyone in the world knows that Rena and I will be getting married at some point; I don't need to be "cool" about it, we're all adults (well, I'm not). Well, it turns out that Rena's mother, unbeknownst to be, had spoken with Rena A WHILE ago, and basically told her that she had 2 choices, a wedding or a down payment on a house. Well, she's smart and took the down payment. Needless to say, we now have the opportunity to buy a house. We probably could've done this next year as well after my bonus and he income from work, but the market is still good right now, so that's why we are looking. As far as the location goes, we actually may not buy this one because it is only 2.5 miles from a landfill. I didn't smell anything by the jobsite, but it also isn't July and 95 with a strong wind. As of now, we are still hunting, but if we stuck with the Townhome, this is what we would be getting:

It's complicated but I'll try to make the explanation quick and easy.

1) There is free healthcare for the poor. I'm not poor according to German standards.
2) Healthcare in some form is mandatory.
3) The public (gov't) healthcare option is mandatory for those that earn less than 50,000 euro.
4) Above 50,000, you are allowed to opt out of the public healthcare, and select private healthcare (what I did). But once you opt out, it's difficult to get back in for fear of "gaming" the system. This is because private healthcare is cheaper than the public when you are young, but more expensive when you are old. This is to prevent people jumping ship and going to public when you get to that intersecting cost point.
5)For private, there are rewards for claim free years. The reward also increase for each consecutive claim free year. Keeping that in mind, there is a deductible (e.g., 400 euro) before insurance will start picking up the tab. So at the very least, you have to exceed that deductible before it makes sense to make a claim. Otherwise, you forfeit your claim free reward for the year for nothing since you would be paying the deductible anyways. Next, before making a claim, you have to consider if your expenses exceed your claim free reward. A typical claim free reward is 1500 euro. So even though your bills might be 1000 euro, you will still come out ahead when you get your reward. And lastly, you have to consider what you are giving up the following year...the increase in reward for the subsequent claim free reward, which, for example, could be 1700-1800 euro. So, even though your expenses might be 1600 euro, you have to consider what you would get back this year (e.g., 1500) and what you are giving up the following year (the reward increase).
6)You have until the end of the year to submit claims. So you can wait until the end of the year to see what your total in medical expenses were.
7)I have an insurance agent advising me on this, so I'm just waiting to see what he says.

So, long story short, I haven't submitted any claims yet, but I will probably get to that point. The thing that probably tipped the scale are the recent schedule of injections. I haven't received any bills for those yet, but I imagine they are not cheap. On the other hand, care is cheaper here than in the US. On the other other hand, ibuprofin is super expensive here (e.g., 20 400mg pills for 10 euro v. 500 200mg pills for 10 dollars), so who knows what other medicines cost. For that reason, Ibuprofin/Advil is certainly on our list of requested items (i.e., accommodation fee) when visitors visit.

germans are very good when it comes to roasting meats of all kinds...

today is caruso's bday. i took off from work to do some things around the house and relax with the fam.

the psu weekend trip was a great success. we timed our arrival perfectly and missed just a few plays of the first drive on our way to cafe 210. we got a table right by the front tv and drank a few teas for lunch. at half we looped down around campus on our way to the sbs and family clothesline. along the way i stopped off at lukey's pooper in the hub. it was amazing. while caruso and bgfrank shopped away i watched the end of the game with the rest of the dudes who were forced to accompany their women to the stores. it was kind of fun actually. after the win we walked back around town before heading back to my rent's place for bbq and beer.

mike vick is awful. i'd like to thank him for the win yesterday. i'd also like to thank lukey for gifting me a win in ff.

First, Happy Belated to both Mr. Joo and Joe.

Bud Selig and the people running baseball are idiots (not exactly a new revelation, I know). After a 162 game season, and given the nature of baseball, having a 1 game playoff series is ridiculous. However, even dumber, is having the team with the better record and ostensibly "home field advantage" start with 2 road games on the road. Now, the A's, with home field may get knocked out of the playoffs after having only played 1 home game. Making them play one of those road games at noon est was ridiculous as well. I understand that this schedule is due to making the decision late in the spring, so this schedule was the only way they could make it work. That should have been a warning sign that maybe this wasn't particularly well thought out and maybe they should wait to implement this until next year. Nope, not baseball - let's just cram this baby through regardless of these problems.

In movie news, Vic and I saw Looper on Friday. It was utter trash. Awful.

Pig meat is the #1 meat over here. Every part of the animal is widely used amongst the people and it's super cheap. The chicken of Germany, if you will. So at the very least I expect the meat to be very good. The sauce is a good question. They LOVE using BBQ sauce over here. I would not go as far as to say that the sauce is something to write home about. It isn't. Germans' taste buds haven't evolved with the rest of the world. But the restaurant we're going to is suppose to be very good, so I'm hoping the sauce can at least hold up to the meat.

I have the proper leather shoes to wear along with my proper socks and leather shorts, but, as you can imagine, those were going to be less comfortable with all my feet issues. I sacrificed fashion for the ability to walk. I'm glad that I wasn't the worst of the lot though!

So to recap, the Germans look like Germans and it's a ton of fun. You should all come next year. I will want to reserve a table. Tickets start to go on sale in February. I'll probably get a table and then hand out tickets on a FCFS basis.

Some numbers: 6.4 M people visited Oktoberfest (including kids, non-drinkers) and 6.9 M liters of beer were sold over the 16 days. I estimated based on tent capacity that on a full night, there are easily 100,000-120,000 people on the grounds at one time.

It is nice to go back to normal for a bit. Italy is striking this coming weekend so we canceled our trip. Instead, we are renting a truck and going to IKEA on Saturday. I am taking off work on Monday to continue to construct whatever it is that we buy. On Friday night I am taking Kate to a highly touted ribs place to get elbow deep in BBQ sauce and meat for our anniversary. I couldn't be more excited about the latter.

Expensive racket is what it amounts to. The attorney licensing board gets the satisfaction, not to mention a little CYA, that they are keeping attorneys educated. And organizations holding the CLE's make tens of thousands of dollars in course fees. You seldom have to pay attention if you don't want to. For some you can just sign in and leave if you really want to.

For your first couple years, NY requires that I take my CLEs over a broad scope of proscribed practice areas, so I don't really have any choice on topic matter. Thus, I was forced to sit through sections on No Fault Insurance, Elder Law, etc. I unabashedly just cracked open my book and read.

I slide into the next stage for the next two years. Now, I can take classes on subjects of my choosing, as long as I meet my required ethics credits. They will still be a waste of time, but they may be somewhat relevant and/or interesting going forward.

I'm assuming based on Lukey's post that it is not necessary to pay attention during these CLEs? If that is the case, why are they mandatory/what purpose do they serve? I mean, I know why you need to do them in theory, but if you are going just to go and check a box, that is the dumbest, most time wasteful thing I can imagine. Do you learn anything there? I am currently in transit on my way back to DC after spending the week in NYC for a 2-day, excruciatingly boring CLE and then some family family time with my Aunt/Uncle and cousins. The CLE was made worse due to the fact that I had a crappy cold from Monday to yesterday (Tues. and Wed. were the worst days). I'm going to blame someone who had visited Oktoberfest for the cold. The weather was also dreary (overcast and rainy) for my entire visit.

At lunch yesterday I ate myself into a delicious White Castle stupor (I had 10 of them), so I thought that it would be a good plan to walk up the 18 flights of stairs to the conference room with my full bookbag. In hindsight, this turned out to NOT be a good idea. Obviously, I could have aborted the mission at any floor, but sometimes you just have to commit to a plan and say what you say and get what you get.

I'm looking forward to some football watching and relaxing this weekend.

I now have lung aids from Oktoberfest with coughing and the sniffles. It was only a matter of time. I've been told that the entire city gets sick around this time, and I'm beginning to believe it. A bunch of people from the office are out sick this week. It was nice of them to come in Monday and spread their disease before they bowed out for the week. In any case, I don't have a fever, but my energy is definitely lower by the time I get home.

The Italians are striking next weekend so we canceled our trip. Instead, we are going to go into the German/Austrian Alps for 2 days/1 night. Then, on that Saturday, I rented a van that we are going to take to IKEA. ROMANTIC!!! At least the Swedish meatballs will be a treat.

My feet are getting better. the plantar facciitus has been going on since the beginning of the year but I was too busy to do anything about it. To help things along, the doctor started injections into the bottom of my feet (cortisone and some other junk) to help the tissue heal. If you ever had to get injections into the bottom of your feet, you would know it's not a fun experience. I get them once a week for a few weeks. I've been getting physical therapy massages from a guy named Marinos to help work out the knots in the bottom of my feet, stretch out my achilles tendons, and to help with my shin splints. It's pretty painful when he's digging his thumb/knuckles into my shins. The massage ends with some good ol' fashioned electro-therapy which is actually quite nice. Total bills so far...2000 euro and rising! It will be nice to walk pain free one of these days.

I made it through another behemoth round of Oktoberfesting on Friday. We sat down at noon in the largest tent and enjoyed some beer and chicken. At 4:00 we were kicked out of our seats since the next reservation for that table was coming in. We were left to go into what I call 'the pit' to find some open seats. Two of us, including myself, were able to weasel our way into a table where we could order beers for our group. Lots of singing, only this time with several thousand people. I lost count at 5 liters of beer (a liter is ~34oz). I probably had 6 in total. I just remember Kate shouting on a couple of occasions, "you ordered another one?!" It's hard to keep track when everyone around you is so jolly. We left the tent around 9:30 to enjoy some brats. Then we went home since 1) we were hammered and 2) there was no way of getting back into the tents at that time. Still hungry, Kate and I made it to a Burger King for some whoppers before making it home and passing out. The brats were infinitely better.

It rained all day on Saturday. I felt poop in the morning but was able to sleep it off. We got up at noon and continued to be worthless every minute of the day. We watched Friday Night Lights until the PSU game -- watched the whole thing Vic!-- and then watched more tv. Sunday was slightly more productive, but not by much since all stores are closed here on Sundays. I think I hate this the most about living here. Sundays were the days I used to be able to get things done, and now it's basically all or nothing on Saturdays and that is hard to do.

Kate went back to Oktoberfest Sunday night without me. I stayed back to plan our anniversary trip to Lake Garda, Italy in 2 weeks. She ended up at the Hofbrau tent (American/Australian tent) and was signing the Bohemian Rhapsody. I am immensely jealous! She also did not come home until 2am, which would have killed me for Monday and Tuesday this week, but not for Wednesday because that is a public holiday!

That's been my last 1/2 week. Pictures to follow tomorrow.

Breaking news out of VertRamp world…

I’m accepting a job offer today for a promotion into our distribution group. I’ve always viewed this job as one that would be beneficial to me in my career path, I just didn’t think it would be now.

The downside is that I LOVE working for my current boss and mostly like what I’m doing right now. The upside is I will no longer have direct reports, but I’ll be making more money. Aside from random pain in the ass personnel crap, this job has been great and I’ve learned a lot in the 18 months.

This new job will be lower stress and I’ll be working for a guy who basically is on a similar track as me. He’s also be labeled a “high potential” employee so it will be great to learn from him and ideally transition into his role if he decides to move up.

The job also no longer ties me to the plant in Minnesota. If wanted to move back to PA in November, I could but am not looking to do so in the short term. Longer term it’s nice to know I have that option and it will likely prevent me from ever buying a house here since the 5-10 year future out here is less certain. Overall I’m happy about the opportunity and this position will make me more marketable both internally and now externally.

My scheduled start date is 11/19 which conflicts with a Vegas trip I booked about a month ago. Rather than fly east for Thanksgiving, I booked a cheap flight ($235) and was comped 4 nights at Bally’s. I plan on grinding poker over those 4 days.

Lately, I’ve been grinding poker on the weekends in Northern Iowa. Over that past 4 weeks, I’ve netted a tidy $2700 profit. A large chunk ($1200) was from one older farmer guy who basically would not fold to me over a 6 hour stretch.

Kept sending Tiger and Stricker out there to get raped. They both decided to eat a bunch of uncircumcised Euro cock all weekend. I called the Furyk to Vic when he was on 15 and leading. That guy is a nervous wreck and known choker. He proceeded to throw up on himself.

Sorry for the delayed reaction to this, as I was in meetings in NC for the past few days.

Android DOES also have something else: Atrophy. It slows down over time as the phone gets filled up with pics, apps, etc. This problem does not before the IPhone.

On a side and completely unrelated note, I look at all the things like Twitter, Instagram, etc., and I hear how its almost considered "uncouth" to NOT be on these social media channels and displaying everything you are doing with your life, and realize how nosey of a society we have become. We need to know what everyone else is doing, every minute of every day. To come up with the next biggest social media website is the ticket to billions. The key to riches is coming up with a BETTER way to get into everyone else's shit.

I know that this stuff is also used for positive things; fuck, I even use Twitter and Facebook (sorry about Instagram; I am too busy living my life to take 1,000 pictures of it). It's just funny how people that are absolutely non-factors in everyone's life need to share everything with everyone about there lives and people actually want and need to follow them. We are a very, very, very interesting species...

I am going to this tonight @ Frankford Hall. It's not Munich but it is something.

• Thursday, September 27: Festbeer Challenge, 7pm-10pm. Come watch nine breweries duke it out as a panel of judges vote on the Frankford Hall Oktoberfest’s best beer. Beer reps will be on-site to give more information about their brews while guests sample their crafted suds and enjoy mini pretzels for $2. One beer will reign supreme and win a spot on Frankford Hall’s beer tap for the entire year!

However, beforehand I am checking out an indoor bocc league at the Fieldhouse. Tony, I know you have a lot of stuff going on but still want to extend you the invite to play. It is Tuesday nights for 6 weeks.

So far Kate and I have gone three times -- twice on Saturday and once last night. It truly is the most wonderful of times.

On Saturday, we cracked open a beer at 10:30 and drank on our way to the fest. In Germany it's perfectly acceptable (and legal) to drink in public-- on the streets, in the subway, wherever! We got to the festing grounds and watched the opening parade before making a dash to one of the smaller tents. A smaller tent only holds 400-500 people. Larger tents hold between 6,000-10,0000 people. But we would have had to get up super early to get a spot in one of the larger, more popular tents on opening day. Anyways, we got into the tent we wanted which is known for its chicken. The chicken did not disappoint. We stayed for about 2 hours before we were asked to leave since the table had a 2:00 reservation (not for us). That was just enough time to have 2 Mas (2 liters of brew). We left the fest shortly after to change and get ready for the evening. (Read: Kate needed to change out of her dirndl). This was probably a good thing considering how much we consumed later that night.

We had a 6:30 reservation at another small tent with my boss, his wife, and 2 others. I was sober by this point but not feeling any beer lull from the 4 hour break. My boss looooooves Oktoberfest...and beer! We all get hammered. We each had 4 Mas and 2 shots of schnapps (bleh!). I could have done without the shots as I'm pretty sure they weren't needed. By the end of the night, the entire tent had people standing on their tables and/or seats singing to various old German songs...and "Country Roads"! I can only imagine what the scene is like in the big tents...which I got to experience a little last night.

Last night we went to one of the large tents after work, but we were too late to get a seat. Just from what I saw while inside though, it is a must. It's a complete shit show (duh!). We were able to get some beers at one of the beer gardens outside. I gobbled up 2 delicious brats as well, which added a nice element to my farts this morning.

Tomorrow I'm taking off from work and we are going to one of the big tents around noon-- to the Shottenhamel (http://goo.gl/8OiYO). We should be able to stay there all night if we are able to last. I will probably go once more next week, maybe twice more. More to report this weekend!

Vic, from the small amount of betting I do, I can't even comprehend how frustrating the NFL must be right now. We all know MNF can make or break a weekend of action.

What I've found most frustrating about the replacement refs is the amount of time they are spending huddling, reviewing, and trying to keep control of the game.

Regarding the penalty calling, I've gotten the impression that the players are familiar with the real refs' tendencies regarding certain penalties and will prepare for a game knowing who is reffing it. Now it's a crapshoot as to what is getting called because the players don't know the refs. This is no different than MLB pitchers knowing the strike zone tendencies of the umpires.

Do not disturb
Sending texts to incoming callers
Privacy Options
Easier to use calendar

Lest we not forget about Google Maps. Does the iPhone app do traffic? And let's not start on NFC

With all this being said, my phone is up for replacement in December. I am not opposed to getting an iPhone just for the simplicity of things. I am also not even considering a new phone until I see what Windows comes out with.

Sorry for the delay. I will provide a brief summary for now and will answer any subsequent questions later:

Likes:
- The new Siri is much better. I actually asked her (it) what the score was for the Yankees v Twins game and she told me. She also told me who the Eagles are playing next and when (I already knew because Rena won't shut up about it).
- "Do Not Distrub" feature - This is cool if you want your alarms to go off and wake you up, but you don't want e-mail chimes and notifications going off during certain hours. Very convenient for me when I sleep at my girlfriend's place. As I get updates on foreign markets and e-mails occasionally at odd hours.
- Answering the Phone has more options - If you are on the line or don't want to answer, you don't have to bump it voicemail, you can also send a text message as a response like "I'm getting a blowjob, will call you when done".
- Posting and sending of pictures - MUCH easier to do and read, they now show app icons instead of a menu list. Easier to navigate overall.
- Speed of the system - The phone was unaffected. Some people experienced slowness, but I have not and my phone is also on a company server. Still responds better than a fucking droid.
- App store - Somewhat different, but nothing pants-dropping.
- Privacy Option in Settings - I don't remember this being in the last version. This allows you to limit sharing with apps, such as Facebook.
- Youtube App being gone - Could give a shit - It sucked compared to the web version.
- Calendar - Does a much better job of integrating with Facebook, etc. for all of those birfdays you could care less about.

Things I am up in the air about:
- New Maps App - Not sure if it is better than Google, but haven't heard good things.
- Passbook - There aren't any companies that I use that are integrated with Passbook. I have yet to see the benefit from it.

That's it. For me, the upgrade was worth it. Take it for what you will. Be advised that I don't play a lot of music or videos on it, but when I do they seem to work fine.

Tony, i agree to a small extent with what you are saying. I will say that some people may be overreacting to this whole ordeal and are acting as if the normal refs never made mistakes. And I agree that I could see the exact same call being made with the normal refs.

With that said, what definitely WOULD NOT have happened last night with the other refs is a call would not have been made without first having a group discussion about the call. Also, what makes the whole thing more egegious is the 3 blown calls (phantom roughing, phantom pass interfernce, non call on offensive pass interference) in the 1 minute leading up to the final play.

Also, if you look at the last 3 weeks as a whole, it is CLEAR that the reffing job is not at the level it used to be. I am not imagining it because I am focusing on bad calls more than before. It is clear as day. These refs have cost me a significant amount of money twice this year already. It is absolutely ridiculous.

friday night i was on baby duty while caruso went out with her teacher friends.

saturday, i golfed (horribly) at red gate (9 hole only) with some dude whose wife used to work with caruso. it was an awkward arranged dude date. afternoon was spent watching all the fooseball. i really enjoyed myself.

sunday, caruso and big gay frank went down to dc to watch the madonna concert. they didn't get back until 1. hanna and i chilled and watched the nfl. i also got to sleep in, which is/was AMAZING.

i really like how our offense is developing. you can definitely see the new england influence (gee, i wonder why) with the varied short crossing routes and "next man up" mentality. they also keep adding elements which is something that NEVER happened under the previous regime. it may be a bit of a stretch to say so early but, given the pats struggles on offense, bob may have played a bigger role in their success than anyone wanted to say. if true, it makes me like the hire even more. hopefully, we can get some people back from injury. the defense is also (SLOWLY) coming along. our dbs are still crap, but i like the more aggressive blitz schemes roof is unleashing (although he still makes some awful calls). i can't wait until we rape the campus poachers this week. hopefully a big statement will be made. i also think that, if we were to play ohio and uva again, we'd easily win (more so for the latter than the former).

Enjoy Oktoberfest, Heaves. If you get a seat in a tent, stay in it.

Friday night (last night?) was Rena's surprise B-day party. It went off without a hitch and she was both very surprised and happy. Most of her shady friends who no one likes anyway didn't show, and I was actually happy about that (one of them I actually HAD to invite because of her history with Rena, but I was confident that if they showed, I would beaten Rena's friend's boyfriend to a pulp - long story).

No other news other than that. Hockey season is non-existent so all I have is football and playoff baseball, which is limited at best because I wind up running around everywhere almost every weekend so I only get to listen or stream games when I can.

Sorry for limited posting, but I can't post during the day due to work firewalls at every location and by the time I get home from the gym, late meetings, work-related organization meetings (ACCA, Shore Builders Association, etc.), I am too tired to bother.
