Subject: our offensive offense

I charted every single offensive formation/result. I then went back again and watched every play several times to try and understand why it's gotten this bad. I'm not going to get into offensive philosophy or have any big picture discussions. I just want to focus on this game and what could have been done differently in this game.

The two sets you saw a lot on Saturday were Shot Gun (SG), 3WR, single back (SB), with one tight end, and under center (UC), SB, 2WR, 2TE. They mix up the formations from these groupings, but these are the two they went with more than any other on Saturday in normal down and distance situations. Obviously they went with more jumbo stuff on short yardage, the occasional wildcat, and some 4WR and 5WR stuff on obvious passing downs.

Their most successful set by a long shot was the SG, 3WR, SB. They ran the ball better and threw the ball better. From the UC/2WR/2TE set they ran 12 plays in the first half. Seven runs for 16 yards (five of those runs had no chance). Five pass attempts that resulted in zero completions, a penalty, a pick, a sack, and a fortunate PI for us. We can't run the ball from this set because A) the plays take longer to develop and B) our offensive linemen and tight ends can't hold blocks for a little while, let alone for the amount of time these plays require. We can't pass the ball from this set because of A and B. At least from the SG/3WR/SB set we can get the ball out quickly on passing plays, and we very clearly run the ball better from that set (six for 31 yards in the first half).

Basically, in the first half we looked moderately competent from one set, and bumbling from the other.

The same can be said for the second half. The one good drive was our fourth effort of the half. It started with two UC/2WR/2TE plays that resulted in a delay of game and a two yard rush. We then went SG/3WR/SB (and one 4WR) for seven straight plays, increased the tempo, and did the following- 14 yard pass, 1yd rush, 13 yard pass, 12 yard pass, 9 yard pass, 1 yard loss screen pass, 8 yard TD pass. We were now two scores ahead and had some momentum.

We stop Maryland and get the ball back. We come out in our UC/2WR/2TE set and promptly run for a three yard loss.

Next drive we come start out with a UC, 1WR, 3TE set, two yard run.

Next drive we start out with a UC, 2WR, 2TE set. False start.

In the second half we went under center seven times before the second to last drive. Those seven plays, in order, 1 yard run, delay of game, 2 yard run, 3 yard loss, 2 yard run, false start, 6 yard sack. So basically when we went under center in this game we were fortunate to A) get the snap off without a penalty and B) not lose yards. And that's not actually exaggerating.

So, that brings us to 3:22 left on the clock, up two. We need a first down. With 3:22 on the clock and Maryland having their timeouts and this being college football and our punters being who they are, it's pretty simple. You just need to worry about getting first downs. So we run three straight UC running plays, including an inexplicable decision to run it on 3rd down from a UC/3TE set, and we punt the ball away and we lose. That's bad coaching. Literally everything that had happened in that game up until that point dictated that the last thing you wanted to do was try and do what they did. If we were better at running the ball from UC sets then go for it. But we had proven all game that anything we tried UC wasn't going to work. Enough about that sequence.

So stepping back and looking at the how the game played out, here are my criticisms. First, a disclaimer. The whole offense is just broken right now. People need to understand just how ugly it is on film. There's little point in going through everything and it's easier to just say that it's broken. Hamilton is the only one playing well, and there is a limited amount of stuff you can do in this offense with this personnel. That's not going to change. So there isn't much you can do to make things better this year. But here are my observations.

- Run your whole normal down and distance offense from the SG/3WR/SB set. It's an unmitigated disaster when we go under center and run plays that take longer. Just scrap it. The decision to start nine drives with UC sets is not, IMO, defensible. They should have realized what was happening and adjusted. The decision to come out in an UC set for the three drives immediate subsequent to the one successful second half drive strikes me as downright (insert angry word or words).

- too many rollouts to the right when too many bad plays come from that. It seems to be Donovan's I'm not sure what to do here fallback option.

- Up tempo as much as possible. It's hard because we have so many unsuccessful plays, but you have to keep pushing it. It's the only time this offense looks remotely dangerous.

- I would not have called the QB sneak at the end there given how much time was on the clock, but it's not a big deal.

- If I was coaching Hack I would be really emphasizing a specific progression. One, quick two, look for the back leaking out. The back is open pretty much every time he leaks out and Hack literally never looks for him. The play where he had Carter wide open and missed badly throwing to his left, Belton was in acres of space leaking out of the backfield. He doesn't have time to sit back there and I would purposefully dump it to the back several times a game, and tell him to look there if options 1.5 aren't open.

- If we're going to line up tight ends in the slot a lot, then we need to trust them to use their big bodies to get between the defender and the ball. That's the whole point of lining up tight ends there. You don't need a big window, just a big body to shield. Since we refuse to throw them the ball you might as well put receivers there to get a little more speed on the field. The issue of course being, we don't have the numbers at receiver right now, so it's tough. And Hack isn't terribly accurate with the passes that are required anyway. Now I'm rambling.

- Not sure why they like the Wildcat.

- it would be nice to see some sight adjustment checks. Examples. One, PSU goes 3TE and Maryland puts 10 guys in the box, Hamilton single covered. The corner is playing well off Hamilton and this should be a pretty simply sight adjustment check to a snap and quick throw, let Hamilton beat his guy with the ball in his hands in acres of space, something he's good at doing. Instead we throw a difficult fade into off coverage, which doesn't make sense. Two, how do we not check out of a draw play that will be run right into a blitzing corner who gives away the blitz too early. Three, first play of the second half, we line up in our a formation we used a lot on Saturday, trips left, SB. They show the exact coverage we want to see for one of our patented WR screens. That should be an automatic check. Instead we hand the ball off for a one yard loss. I would think that Hack has the option to pull the ball and throw the screen there, the receivers certainly acted like it was an option, so that's either on Hack or it should be an option.

- this is a tough one and it probably doesn't matter considering the lack of protection, but it would be nice to see the receivers/tight ends have more options with their routes. O'Brien was big on that. It's tiresome watching tight ends lined up in the slot run right to a linebacker who's just sitting down. There are too many wasted routes that are too easily defended. Again, it probably doesn't matter, but it's a difference between last year and this year.

Ultimately there's only so much you can do given the personnel limitations and the fact that the offense is so far gone that it's hard to get it back at this point. These are my observations/suggestions, and I think there could be some improvement, but ultimately any improvement would be relatively small. However, small improvement is all that was required for most of these games.

Penn State's Class of 2015 grew once again on Saturday, as Washington (D.C.) St. John's defensive back Ayron Monroe made the call to head coach James Franklin.

Monroe will play safety at Penn State.
The 6-foot, 197-pound prospect chose the Nittany Lions over Maryland, where his older brother Andre is a senior defensive lineman. He also had offers from Auburn, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Toledo and Virginia.
"I'm really excited. It was a close decision between Maryland and Penn State," he said. "Maryland didn't do anything wrong. It's a good school and they've got a good thing going on right now, but I just felt that Penn State was a better fit. Also, I just wanted to go on a different path that my brother is on."
Monroe took visits to Penn State in Feburary, March and April, and felt a connection with the Nittany Lions' new staff.
"It's just the good relationship that I have with the staff, the good academics and the great environment up there," he said.
The three-star prospect is the second safety commitment in the class, joining Connecticut junior Jarvis Miller.
"They want me to come in and play safety and know that next year they'll have Adrian [Amos] leaving for the draft," he said. "I know they have one, maybe two more safeties graduating. I know that I'll be able to come in that year and compete for the spot and contribute as a freshman."
Monroe is the No. 10 player in Washington, D.C., and the No. 57 safety overall according to 247Sports.

Two for two Tuesday for Penn State is complete, as James Franklin and his coaching staff grow their recruiting class to 15 with the evening commitments from Top100 offensive tackle Sterling Jenkins and Top247 quarterback Brandon Wimbush.

Jenkins was first to pop with Wimbush expectantly following suit roughly an hour later.

Wimbush was viewed as a must get recruit in this class in Happy Valley.

The Nittany Lions inched closer to Alabama in the 247Sports National Recruiting Rankings while pulling away from No. 3 Auburn.

Perhaps Penn State’s class will continue to grow with priority recruits in the near future. One source indicated there could be more movement within the next week.

The Priority Moving Forward: Penn State’s class is balanced with three offensive linemen committed, two running backs, two wide receivers, a quarterback, four defensive linemen, two linebackers and a safety.

What’s the need? The want?

The two in-state four-star cornerbacks in John Reid and Jordan Whitehead would be the perfect to finish to the talent that’s already been gathered.

Penn State is the 247Sports Crystal Ball favorite for both Reid and Whitehead, however both don’t plan on announcing a college decision until after their senior seasons. The likes of Alabama, Maryland, Michigan State and Notre Dame are other contenders for the Top100 Reid, while Pittsburgh and West Virginia are the other challengers for the Top247 Whitehead.

Three More While the Nittany Lions trail on the 247Sports Crystal Ball for Top100 offensive tackle Matthew Burrell and Top247 offensive tackle Grant Newsome, those are two that Franklin and company have a great shot to land.

In fact, Penn State doesn’t have a single 247Sports Crystal Ball vote for Burrell, however they’re right there with Ohio State for the U.S. Army All-American’s signature. Alabama, Florida and LSU are also strongly in the mix.

Michigan leads the way for Newsome on his Crystal Ball, but that may also not be necessarily true of what’s really playing out. The Nittany Lions are a very strong contender for the blue-chipper out of Mclean (Va.) The Lawrenceville School. It wouldn’t be surprising if they led.

Penn State is the 247Sports Crystal Ball leader for Washington (D.C.) St. John’s College safety Ayron Monroe, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him jump into the fold at any point for the Nittany Lions.

One Nittany Lions source is confident about where Penn State stands with all three.

How Good Is Alabama’s Class? If Penn State landed Reid, Burrell, Newsome, Whitehead and Monroe, the Nittany Lions would still trail the Crimson Tide, by a little over three points, according to the 247Sports Class Calculator.

Also Still In Play The Nittany Lions are the 247Sports Crystal Ball leader for three more in Top247 running back Josh Adams, defensive end Shareef Miller and linebacker Manny Bowen.

Adams is ranked by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 16 running back, but he could also be a fantastic outside linebacker on the college level. He wants a crack on offense before playing any other position. Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Stanford are a few other schools in the mix.

Say Penn State lands Adams, Reid and Whitehead, that’d be a sweep of the top seven players in the state for Franklin and his staff. In-state recruiting was one of the first things he mentioned upon his hiring, and since the 247Sports Composite Ratings were established back in 2011, Penn State had not even landed the top in-state player. Jenkins changed that with his verbal.

Bowen’s Crystal Ball trended Penn State prior to his March visit and offer to Happy Valley. Miami, Michigan State, Oklahoma and Rutgers are other programs he’s high on. The Scarlet Knights Arizona State and Oregon are contenders for Miller, however both he and Bowen continue to work on the things they need to away from the field to be able to contribute on the field at a place like Penn State.

Penn State went two for two on top targets on Tuesday evening, as Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's Prep quarterback Brandon Wimbush selected the Nittany Lions.

Wimbush chose the Nittany Lions over Ohio State, Miami, Boston College and Virginia Tech. He also had scholarships in hand from Alabama, LSU, Michigan State, Nebraska, Rutgers, South Carolina, Tennessee and others.

"I picked Penn State because I felt like it was the best fit for me personally," he told Lions247 on Tuesday morning. "There are great guys all around the program and it will give me the opportunities that I need. It was just the vibe that I got with the coaching staff and the QB coach, personally.

"I'm very, very, very, very excited."

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound prospect completed 93 of 156 passes for 1,472 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also ran for 579 yards and seven touchdowns.

Wimbush is the No. 159 prospect in the country, the No. 3 player in New Jersey and the No. 5 dual-threat quarterback nationally according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Per the 247Sports rankings, he is the No. 178 prospect nationally, the No. 7 dual-threat passer and the No. 4 player in the Garden State.

He has been selected to compete in the prestigious final Elite 11 Quarterbacks Camp this summer and has been nominated to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Wimbush was recruited for the Nittany Lions by quarterbacks coach Ricky Rahne and offensive recruiting coordinator Josh Gattis.

Penn State has, quite literally, added a huge piece to its Class of 2015. Pittsburgh (Pa.) Baldwin offensive tackle Sterling Jenkins announced on Tuesday evening that he intends to suit up for James Franklin and the Nittany Lions.

The 6-foot-8, 310-pound rising senior committed to the coaching staff while on an unofficial visit to University Park on Monday.

"I think that really, a lot of it was coach Franklin and the staff's ambition and their dream, their vision for Penn State," Jenkins explained in an interview granted to Lions247 on Monday evening. "I feel that they were very honest in how much they care for me, that was just astounding. I'm really appreciative of that.

"I think that their honesty with me and how much they care about me and how much they care about Penn State, how they want to get it back to the top where it was before, I think that was a great position that I wanted to be in."

Jenkins is the No. 49 player in the country according to the 247Sports Composite, and has been tabbed by the recruiting industry as the top player in the state and the No. 5 offensive tackle nationally. 247Sports ranks him the No. 94 player in the nation, the No. 2 prospect in the Keystone State and the country's No. 11 offensive tackle.

In the end he chose the Nittany Lions over Ohio State. Jenkins also held scholarship offers from Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, Tennessee and others.

Jenkins becomes the 14th commitment in Penn State's Class of 2015. He is the third offensive lineman to pledge to the Nittany Lions and the sixth commitment from the Keystone State.

He has accepted an invitation to play in the Under Armour All-American Bowl in January.

Jenkins was recruited for the Nittany Lions by assistant coaches Terry Smith, Herb Hand and Bob Shoop.

that didn't take long.

Penn State has added a 13th member of its Class of 2015, nabbing a commitment on Saturday from Potomac (Md.) Bullis School defensive end Jonathan Holland. The three-star prospect made the decision while on campus for an unofficial visit this weekend.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Holland committed to the Nittany Lions over scholarship offers from Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Wake Forest, West Virginia and others. Holland is the No. 17 prospect in Maryland and the No. 32 weakside defensive end nationally, according to 247Sports.

He was joined on the visit by Top247 defensive tackle and Penn State commitment Adam McLean.

Holland was recruited for the Nittany Lions by assistant coaches Sean Spencer and Charles Huff.

it's def legit. there are rumblings of past, present, and continuing discussions. if the pfizer deal doesn't go through, there will more than likely be another move, maybe a merger, which will have its own impacts. it's the trend of the times in the pharma industry.

Tony - thanks for forwarding along the Minneapolis - Trenton routes through Frontier. I try to avoid PHL as much as possible and flew to Newark on my last trip to PA. I'll def look into Trenton for future flights...if...

In other news...I may not be living in Minnesota for much longer. Two weeks ago it was announced that my company was purchased by Quad Graphics (link for details...http://tinyurl.com/khbv4zn). Given that my current role is tied to a process and not a location, I fully expect to be in one of earlier rounds of cuts. If I am offered something comparable with Quad, I fully expect it to require a relocation (possibly to a Milwaukee or Chicago suburb).

At this point I'm updating my resume and am seeing what's out there. I'm in no rush to move onto something else just for the sake of having a new job. I have 11 years in with Brown and might hold out given some severance rumors I've heard from past acquisitions.

I'm finally catching up on things after a whirlwind April. It started with a week in Disney (awesome), then Van Akin's wedding in the burgh, followed by Easter yesterday.

Disney was a blast. I will spare you guys all the princess shit. Things went pretty well. It was hot as balls though, they had near-record high temperatures when we were down there. But it didn't rain at all so I can't complain. We flew down there out of Trenton airport, which I'm pretty sure is the smallest airport in the world. I will take a small airport over a big one like Philly any day.

Van Akin's wedding was in Pittsburgh. The hotel was right by the stadiums which was pretty neat. The reception was a marathon. It started at 5 and was still going at 11:30 when I left. There was an awesome dessert table which I took full advantage of.

With the weather warming up, my lawn is looming. There are a couple of bushes I'm hoping to replace this weekend and maybe start some mulching. Fun times!

Doing pretty good. I'm black and blue and not very cute at the moment, but things seem to be healing up nicely. I go in to see the doc tomorrow to get the update with clean bandages. The worst part of the whole thing has not been the pain in or around my nose. That part has been pretty bearable. The congestion sucks too but was expected. But the absolute worst part is my sore throat from the intubation. I don't know what they did in the OR but my goodness I feel like they ran the train on me. Swallowing has been painful and waking up at night because my throat is drier than the Sahara has been shitty. Each night it gets it seems to get worse and so I have some complaining to do tomorrow.

In more of the falling apart front, I went to an orthopedic doctor about my knees, feet and shin splints. He basically shrugged at the feet and shin splints and said they will get better on their own, eventually. My knees, however, hurt when going up and down stairs and when I go down on my knees (hey-oh!) (i.e., when I kneel, fuckers). An x-ray and an MRI showed that I'm missing some cartilage under a portion of both knee caps. The doctor recommended injecting me with delicious chicken under the knee cap and taking supplements that are supposed to help make what cartilage I do have healthier. The chicken shots were crazy. Very weird. It's a gel made from the neck protein of chicken (I think) made to lubricate the ol' joints. Whatever it is, it seems to be making an improvement. Chicken, not just for eating anymore. Who knew?

I'm going to be in Philly May 14-17 for a conference and I'm going to go see the Phillies on the 17th with my Dad. I was thinking that it would be a good opportunity to meet up for those that want to hang out. Let me know if interested. I'll be heading up to Allentown after the game for a week. Then off to San Fran for another conference before heading back to Munich. Two and a half weeks in the States is going to be nice!

I feel like I got smacked in the face with a shovel, but everything is good. I am in the hospital for 3 nights to rest up and should be out of here Saturday morning. I have a harddrive full of stuff to watch so I'm about to start my 3 day marathon. The bad part is that Germans love pain and are extremely drug adverse. I asked for some pain killers and they gave me a 600mg tablet of Ibuprofin. I asked for codine, but I have to go through this first. In the states I could just press a button and get morphine injected into my IV drip. Those were the good ol' days.

Hallo zusammen! Just a heads up that I'll be going under the knife tomorrow to get my schnoz worked on. Hopefully all my sinus junk will be cleared up after this. Apparently 15 years ago when I first had this surgery, it fixed some problems but caused others (IMO). Wish me luck!

heaves is right. psu landed yet another recruit this weekend. it's almost comical at this point how good franklin et al are at recruiting. i'm almost numb to it to be honest. i doubt psu stays #1 for too long but it's not a stretch to say they'll end up with a top 10 class and possibly a top 5 class when all is said and done. more details below.

Four-star defensive tackle Adam McLean has committed to Penn State State. McLean is visiting Happy Valley today for the Nittany Lions annual spring game.

McLean is ranked the No. 1 player from Maryland according to the 247Sports Composite. Penn State State now has 12 commitments for the 2015 class, nine of which are four-star recruits.

on being the #1 class...

Three months.

That's all it took Penn State head coach James Franklin and his staff to build the top football recruiting class in the country.

The Nittany Lions moved to No. 1 in the 247Sports team recruiting rankings following a commitment from Bethesda (Md.) Quince Orchard four-star defensive tackle Adam McLean before Penn State took the field for its annual Blue-White Game.

With 201.97 points, Penn State moved ahead of Alabama and Texas A&M in the team rankings.

McLean's commitment gives the Nittany Lions 12 commitments for the 2015 class, nine of which are 247Sports Composite four-star recruits.

McLean becomes Penn State’s highest ranked commitment for this class. He’s currently No. 111 in the Top247 and rated the top player from Maryland in the 247Sports Composite.

Franklin and his staff have also secured commitments from the No. 1 player form Indiana in linebacker Josh Barajas, the No. 2 player from New Jersey in wide receiver Juwan Johnson and the No. 3 player from Pennsylvania in running back Andre Robinson.

B turned one today. This past year went by so incredibly fast. I can't believe its been a year already. She is awesome. I am leaving work early to hang out with her.

Also, I am very excited to watch the Masters this weekend.

I am heading out to Pittsburgh for the first time ever this weekend for Van Akin's wedding. It's going to be a one night trip. Its going to be fun and then things slow down a bit for me.

Ali and B are going to South Carolina next Wed to Sat to see her parents and grandmother (her grandmother lives in SC). I am planning on going out every single night in their absence.

Yup, that sounds like exactly the trip. I didn't mention Myrtle Beach as the site, but that's what I was planning on. Joining with his group would be perfect to get more dudes. I'm thinking 8 - 12 is a good number for golf betting, etc. Back in high school, our golf team did a mini Ryder Cup style match against another school (alternated between best ball & alternating shot) on the front and back. It was super fun.

funny you mention a golf trip during that time frame because toker (i think you met him during my bachelor party) proposed just such a trip and actually went on a test trip with a few people just recently to his place down near myrtle beach. essentially, it's the golf in the morning, booze and watch bball in the afternoon thing you proposed. we could maybe float a dual trip next year so we have a nice sized group.

On Saturday, I’ll be flying to Myrtle Beach for a few rounds of golf with my Dad and 2 uncles. They’re driving down from PA and picking me up at the airport. On Monday night, we’re heading to Columbia, SC and will be making the trek Tuesday morning to Augusta for the Tuesday practice round. I am pumped to walk the course. I’ve been playing TW14 on PS3 this week to familiarize myself with some of the lesser known holes.

On another note, Weary and I are trying to gauge interest in a golf trip during the first round of March Madness next year. I’m hoping to get 8-12 guys who are interested in a Wed-Sun trip. Golf 3 rounds (Thurs-Sat) in the AM and then watch the tourney games/drink/bs for the rest of the day. There are quite a few package deals for trips like this that make it very easy to plan. If anyone is interested, let me know and I’ll get an email chain going.

psu now has the #2 recruiting class in the country (behind tix-us a&m). franklin and company picked up 2 more this weekend. for more, see below.

psu also lost one of its few experienced o-linemen for the season. miles diffenbach blew out his knee which makes the already thin o-line that much thinner. hopefully, hack can run.

Steven Gonzalez, 4*, OG

Penn State added a lineman to its Class of 2014 on Saturday, as Union City (N.J.) Top247 offensive guard Steven Gonzalez committed to the Nittany Lions while on campus for an unofficial visit.

The 6-foot-3, 300-pound prospect chose the Nittany Lions over scholarship offers from Boston College, Michigan State, Ohio State, Rutgers, South Carolina, Virginia, Wisconsin and others.

Gonzalez is the No. 70 player overall in the country according to 247Sports and is the No. 3 offensive guard nationally. He checks in as the No. 3 prospect in the state of New Jersey.

The junior prospect is a 2015 Under Armour All-American Bowl selection. He was a second team all-state offensive lineman in 2013 in addition to first team all-group, all-county and all-league offers.

He becomes the Nittany Lions' 10th commitment in the Class of 2015 and the second offensive lineman, joining Top247 guard Ryan Bates. He is the second Top100 commitment from New Jersey for the Nittany Lions in the class.

Josh Barajas, 4*, ILB

Merrillville (Ind.) Andrean Top247 linebacker Josh Barajas committed to Penn State on Sunday.

Barajas's coach told 247Sports on Thursday morning that he thought the Irish were still in front. Another huge win for Penn State on the recruiting trail.

"I was still debating," Barajas said. "They were neck and neck the whole ride."

Rated by 247Sports as the nation's No. 2 inside linebacker, Barajas also held offers from the likes of Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin.

Notre Dame led after Barajas's visit on March 1, but the tide changed when Barajas visited Happy Valley last weekend.

"Really it was when I was there I knew that was the one," Barajas said.

Barajas told his future head coach James Franklin on Sunday.

"He was practically having a party in the coaching office," Barajas said. "He was excited man."

So is Barajas. He is commit No. 11 for the Nittany Lions in the class-of-2015 and the eighth to hold four-star status either by 247Sports or the 247Sports Composite Ratings.

"I just felt comfortable," he said. "The way the coaching staff just treated me. I feel like they're going to do big, big things over there."

Barajas said he is done with the recruiting process and he won't visit Notre Dame on April 12.

Next Tuesday I'm heading to the happiest place on earth for a week. 5 years ago this would have meant I'm heading to the OG, but today that means I'm going to Disney. Should be a good trip. I'm just looking forward to getting away from work the most. The girls are excited. Hopefully they won't throw up on themselves too much.

I will admit. I'm very impressed with the "Experience" of managing the trip. Those Disney folks have their act together.

Let me know if you guys want any souvenirs.

another week, another commit. psu up to #4 in overall class rank (already 9 commits, 6 4*).

Penn State has added a ninth commitment to its Class of 2015, landing a verbal pledge from Ashburn (Va.) Briar Woods wide receiver Brandon Polk. The junior prospect returned to campus on Tuesday after visiting over the weekend.

The 5-foot-9, 160-pound Polk chose the Nittany Lions over offers from Stanford, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Virginia, Wisconsin and more.

Polk was a first team all-conference selection as a junior. He caught 36 passes for 549 yards and five touchdowns.

He carries a three-star, 88 rating from 247Sports and is a four-star prospect according to the 247Sports Composite. The 247Sports Composite rates him as the No. 13 player in the state of Virginia and the No. 33 wide receiver nationally.

The junior prospect was a teammate of Penn State Class of 2014 quarterback signee Trace McSorley, who visited with him over the weekend.

"I'm excited to get to play with him again," said McSorley. "He brings speed that is unmatched, he has great body control and is a great route runner.

"We both worked a lot together in the offseason and we were able to develop a good chemistry between us. If I needed somewhere to go to make a play, I know that I could trust him. I have a lot of confidence in him. His speed is unmatched, and he has a great opportunity to make plays at Penn State."

Polk joins Juwan Johnson in a class that now features two wide receivers. He He is the first member of Penn State's 2015 recruiting class from Virginia.

Hey guys,

The master bathroom is finally done, thanks to the masterful work of Justin Humes. Pics of the bathroom can be found on his FB page. Next is the kitchen, which is well underway. The tiling has been completed, and the cabinets should be installed at the end of next week. We picked out our granite slabs, and have the sink, faucet, and lighting picked out and ready to go as well. I will endeavor to post picks once complete.

Vic - Glad to see that everything is going well with Lulu and the boy-to-be. I hope the name is Noah; you can then invite us over when he learns to make Scallion Latkas.

In case you do or don't care, I spoke with my dad on the whole Flight 370 thing (my dad flew the 777 airplane for many years before he retired) and he seems to believe that given all of the evidence and how the plane operates, the moves the plan made were deliberate and everything had to have been planned, even if the plane did crash (possibly because things went ary with the plans?). Probably old and dead news, but just in case anyone cared.

Hafer - Only a few months away from the Coin being delivered to our doorsteps!

hey everybody, so we made a post about this on facebook but for those that didnt see or almost never check facebook at all anymore like me, we went for our 20 week checkup a few days ago and found out were having a boy. Im pretty stoked about that for the same reasons jono is excited will is starting to show an interest in sports. Not only will it be awesome to play sports with the little guy, itll be nice to have someone to high five during penn state and duke games. Right now, I celebrate big plays by giving the dogs ferocious tummy rubs as lulu refuses to watch sports with me. its kinda sad actually.

As for lil' foteeninches (thatll be his rapper name), we are 99% decided on an actual name for him. Right now we are pretty set on Noah. After we found out Lulu was pregnant pretty much every name she heard while watching tv she would decide whether she liked it as a name for the kid. Welp, while watching the notebook she said she really liked the name Noah. I agreed that I liked it, and it just grew on both of us from there. So f--- you Russell Crowe and thanks ryan gosling!!!

I cant believe that we are already more than halfway through the pregnancy. Im excited for what lies ahead but at the same time cant help but feel a bit sad that soon many of my "freedoms" will be gone. Hafer and I talked about possibly setting up a guys weekend somewhere to let loose one last time prior to the arrival of the baby. Any interest from others on this?

Aside from having some members & being full of old ppl, the Legion is pretty much a regular bar in my town. I started going with a co-worker when I moved to the area and have met some other ppl over time. The town I live in is only 10K ppl so it's a lot of the same crowd every week. There's a rotating group of 12-15 ppl or so that come up with questions on a quarterly basis.

If you host trivia you get to drink for free that night, so I got that going for me, which is nice.

Hey guys! I'm really excited about March Madness! I was pumped to check out Nate Silver's 538 blog regarding the tournament but it turns out statistics just prove that the higher seed is just more likely to win every time so I'm just gonna go all chalk BABY (tm Dicky V) and hope that maybe that happens one of these years. I just have not followed college bball too much so as Vert said, this is just a lotto ticket for me.

I am in Northeast MD/DE for work this week. I was supposed to be in DC today but got snowed out. Will be spending time with the client here until Thursday afternoon when I will fly to St. Louis and be picked up by my KC buddies for a previously planned guys weekend. The work trip got dropped in last week so it muddy the waters a bit. Especially since when I get back Sunday, Amy will already be gone for her 5-day work trip, only to return for a few days to then leave again for another 5 days for a girls trip! Lots of solo parenting b/t the both of us for the rest of this month.

In more fun news, WIll starts "soccer" this Sunday! It is his favorite sport right now besides playing catch with a ball. He kicks a soccer ball for approximately 10000 hours straight when we go to the park. We took him to the Sporting KC (defending MLS champs) home opener on Saturday and he seemed to like watching (he really hated not being able to "go down there and play soccer" like everyone else). This makes me excited b/c he also enjoyed watching skiing during the Olympics so hopefully he's slowly turning into a sports watching zombie so I will have a sports watching buddy, like I hoped.

Not much else going on. Plowed through House of Cards and other than some weird shit, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN, it was an entertaining watch. Hoping to plow through True Detective and Orphan Black next.

Vert, how the hell did you get that trivia gig? And at the American Legion?!! That is asking for more details so please provide.

I'm hosting trivia tomorrow night at the local American Legion. They don't do it the standard bar way with rounds and such. Basically I come up with 20 questions + 5 pictures of random ppl, hand them out, and then teams of up to 4 ppl get 30 minutes to complete.

Here are the questions...I think you guys will find them easy. It's a mixed bag 30-80 year old men & women. Some of the older crowd is barely aware that there is a thing called the internet so I have to make them on the easier side.

it's almost silly at this point how good franklin is at recruiting. landed another 4*, top 60 player on sunday. ho hum...

James Franklin and the new staff at Penn State added a big piece to its 2015 class on Sunday, hauling in a verbal commitment from Glassboro (N.J.) Top247 wide receiver Juwan Johnson.

Johnson was on campus for an unofficial visit when he pulled the trigger. He said that he came into the weekend thinking that a decision would be coming.

"Basically it felt like home from the moment that I walked in," he said. "I felt the chemistry and the need that they had for me. I just loved everything about the college when I visited."

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound junior is the No. 55 recruit in the country and the No. 8 athlete nationally, according to 247Sports. He is the No. 2 player in the state of New Jersey.

Johnson chose the Nittany Lions over scholarship offers from Alabama, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Michigan State, North Carolina, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, South Carolina, Virginia and others. His top five heading into the weekend consisted of the Nittany Lions, Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan and Boston College.

The U.S. Army All-American Bowl selection caught 26 passes for 421 yards and four touchdowns in a limited junior season. He caught 29 passes for 441 yards and six touchdowns as a sophomore.

Penn State wide receivers coach Josh Gattis connected with Johnson when the new staff arrived in January.

"It's a good school, and I especially like [Gattis]. He's very laid back and someone that I can talk to," Johnson told Lions247 in February. "Their coaching staff is real fresh, real young. It's very uptempo. They can make a lot of things happen. They can win a National Championship and a Big Ten Championship. They can do it."

Johnson becomes the eighth commitment for the Nittany Lions in the Class of 2014. He is the Nittany Lions' fifth four-star prospect so far in the class.

In May, my 28 yr old cousin is marrying a lady with the last name Hagerty from the Harrisburg area. It's quite possible that our roommate James/Jimbo/little Jim has the same last name and was from the same area. I would love love love it if he happened to be at the wedding. Man, that kid was a mess!! Living with seniors didn't help, but I think we can say we turned out just fine.

Who's Carl Sagan?

I watched Captain Phillips on Saturday. I was thinking Hanks performance may have not been memorable given he didn't get a Best Actor nom, but I thought he was great. Even though we know the outcome, the final scenes are still intense to watch.

To mix things up, I also watched Bad Grandpa. It was 95% dumb with a few funny scenes/lines.

Was hoping someone chimed in on the Southpark game. I will plan on purchasing it soon. I happened to rewatch the Creme Fraiche episode this weekend...what a classic.

I am hurting today. It defintely takes me a couple of days to get adjusted to the time change. I am just happy that this is another sign that winter is coming to an end. It has been around way too long this year.

I can't believe that we are already in double digits in March. It seems like the month just started. I spent the better part of the morning doing some time sheets.

I played the new South Park game over the weekend. It is a must play game for anyone that is a fan of the TV show. It is a quick play and it is crammed full of SP references. The game is basically a playable version of the show.

I really enjoyed the first episode of Cosmos last night. Naked and Afraid returns next weekend.

Kroll Show is so damn funny and everyone should be watching it. The new show Review has potential too.

Lukey told me your Leo bone was raging so hard that a couple TWO rows behind you moved seats because they couldn't see over it.

I watched Dallas Buyers Club on Monday and Blue Jasmine last night. I really liked McConaughey and Leto. I still hate Jennifer Garner. Every time I hear her talk I'm reminded of that super weird Juno scene when she talks to Juno's pregnant stomach.

Blue Jasmine was awesome. I was pretty sure I was going to like it. It was typical Woody Allen. Lukey mentioned a Louis CK cameo in American Hustle. He also has had a small role in Blue Jasmine that was fantastic.

vert, lukey and I just checked out Wolf of Wall Street. I highly recommend you check that out first. Its one of my favorite movies of the year. Seems like a movie that would be right up your alley. It definitely stands apart from the usual crop of artsy films the academy nominates.

I watched Dallas Buyers Club a couple weeks back as well, which I also highly recommend. After watching that I thought Mcconaughey was a shoo in for best actor. Even though I hadnt watched all the other nominees I couldnt imagine anyone topping the performance he gave. After watching wolf of wall street (which coincidentally mcconaughey also had a brief but awesome part in), however, I actually preferred Dicaprio's performance over Mcconaughey's. Admittedly, I am a huge Dicaprio homer though so there may be some bias. But in the end I think people are overlooking the job Dicaprio did because he isnt playing a serious character in a serious movie. I like Mcconaughey too so I have no problem with him winning but if I had a vote I would have given the slight edge to Dicaprio.

Vert, after those two I would proceed to Gravity or Blue Jasmine (if you like Woody Allen movies). Havent watched 12 years or Nebraska yet. Dont waste your time on American Hustle.

Vert of the movies, I've seen Gravity, American Hustle, Nebraska, and Dallas Buyer's Club. My take:

-Gravity: First 20 minutes were really well done, the rest of the movie was meh. I saw it on IMAX/3d and it was visually pretty impressive.

-American Hustle: I don't dislike it as much as Joe, but I wasn't very impressed by it. I thought Christian Bale's performance was terrible. It seemed like David O. Russell just had a bunch of actors whom he likes working with goof around for a couple hours (I read that they improved a lot of scenes). I liked Louis CK's limited role. Amy Adams' outfits were spitting fire though.

-Nebraska: I enjoyed this movie; Bruce Dern and his wife were really good. I did have a little trouble taking Will Forte seriously in a non-comedic role.

-Dallas Buyer's Club: I thought it was well-done. McConaughey was great. It was a little slow-paced and slightly too long (pet-peeve of mine)

Harrisburg (Pa.) Bishop McDevitt Top100 running back Andre Robinson confirmed with 247Sports that he committed to Penn State on Thursday.
The 5-foot-9, 205-pound Robinson visited the Nittany Lions campus on Monday, where he connected with head coach James Franklin and position coach Charles Huff for the first time.
Ranked by 247Sports as the nation's No. 8 running back and No. 92 prospect overall, Robinson chose Penn State over offers from the likes of Ohio State, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Louisville, Maryland, Northwestern, Minnesota, Rutgers and Syracuse.
Robinson becomes commit No. 7 for Penn State in the class-of-2015, and the fourth to hold four-star status.

first, george takei is the man. super friendly and very gracious.

psu landed 2 recruits today. jake cooper and ryan buchholz. stories below.

jake cooper
It was hardly a surprise to see Warminster (Pa.) Archbishop Wood linebacker Jake Cooper commit to Penn State while on campus for a visit on Monday.

The three-star linebacker has always held the Nittany Lions in high regard for a number of reasons.

"First and foremost, it's the student body up there. It's incredible. You just get all the love from everybody," he said. "It's a great academic school. Some kids just say that because it goes along with making a decision, but when you sit down and look at where Penn State ranks with the rest of the schools, you can really see that Penn State is a great school.

"It feels like home. Going up there, I've been up four of five times, it just gets better and it really does feel like home."

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Cooper is excited to join one of the elite linebacker traditions in the country, something that he is well aware of.

"It's huge. The history of Penn State and Linebacker U is just crazy," he said. "You've got Greg Buttle, Shane Conlan, Lavar Arrington, Paul Posluszny, Dan Connor, Sean Lee, NaVorro Bowman, Mike Mauti, Gerald Hodges - those are all tremendous linebackers.

"Getting a chance to come in and fulfill what they left you is such a tremendous opportunity for me and I couldn't be any more proud of my decision here. I'm excited to get down there and see if I can carry the torch."

Cooper joins a class in which James Franklin has emphasized the importance of adding talent from the Keystonte State.

"I think it's tremendous. Coach Franklin is really hitting the state of Pennsylvania hard. Like he said, 'Dominate the State,' and that's exactly what he's doing," he said. "He's getting all of the top guys in Pennsylvania to really open up to Penn State. When you get a couple guys like Ryan Bates and the guys that have already committed, the recruits really open up and see that Pennsylvania kids are going to Penn State and they want to jump on board.

"It's a tremendous thing seeing what is going to happen at Penn State. We really are going to dominate the state, I can tell you that. We're going to be a top-notch program, no doubt about it."

Bates, who committed to Penn State on February 15 at Junior Day, came along for the ride on Monday. He was happy to see his teammate choose to join him for the next level.

"I'm pumped," he said. "I've been playing with him all four years of high school and to go to the same college is even better. He's a hard-worker, he earns everything that he does and he's just a great guy."

Cooper was an all-state selection as a junior, racking up 152 tackles and six sacks. He was a team captain for an Archbishop Wood squad that won a PIAA Class AAA state title in 2013.

ryan buchholz
Malvern (Pa.) Great Valley defensive end Ryan Buchholz knew that it was inevitable. After picking up a scholarship offer from Penn State on Signing Day, it would only be a matter of time before the three-star prospect was a Nittany Lion.

On Monday, just over one week after visiting for Penn State's first Junior Day the dream became a reality. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Buchholz committed to head coach James Franklin.

"It's just everything," he told Lions247 before the visit. "How close it it, the coaching staff. I even told Coach Franklin last time that I wasn't as comfortable with the last staff, but with his staff I feel more comfortable and a lot better with them.

"It's just a combination of everything, basically."

Buchholz chose the Nittany Lions over scholarship offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, UConn, Duke, Illinois, Maryland. Northwestern, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Vanderbilt, Virginia and West Virginia.

Buchholz recorded 70 tackles and 10 sacks as a junior in 2013. He was a second team all-Southeastern Pennsylvania selection, in addition to being an all-league pick.

He was recruited for the Nittany Lions by wide receivers coach Josh Gattis and defensive line coach Sean Spencer.

Buchholz is rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports, landing at No. 15 in the Pennsylvania state rankings in the class of 2013. He's the No. 27 strong-side defensive end nationally.

Hafer - Oh My

Work is crazy. Given the stress, I should be gray or bald by 2015; I can make either work for me.

We are almost done with the master bathroom renovation; the shower is the biggest endeavor. We took out the builder-grade tub-shower unit and have replaced it with a fully-tiled shower with a bench, 14" rainhead, 4 body sprays, and a handheld. The kitchen should start in a couple of weeks.

Rena is doing great - Not even close to having a kid and we are in no rush.

They should put "Thanks for comin, asshole" on the back of the silver and bronze medals for the hockey teams that win them. No Gold Medal Had Been Sent!

franklin doing work. he's as awesome as the ski jumping video. holy poop, some of those dudes get wrecked.

Penn State's first Junior Day of the James Franklin era is still playing dividends, as the Nittany Lions picked up another commitment stemming from the weekend on Wednesday. Whitehall (Pa.) running back SaQuon Barkley has flipped his pledge from Rutgers and is now on board with Penn State.

Sources confirmed the news to Lions247 on Wednesday afternoon, and Barkley followed that with a tweet.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound junior originally committed to the Scarlet Knights in September, but picked up a handful of scholarship offers after his junior year saw him rush for over 1,500 yards.

Boston College, Connecticut, Indiana, Michigan State, Missouri, North Carolina and Pittsburgh were all recruiting Barkley as well.

The junior is the No. 7 prospect in the state of Pennsylvania according to the 247Sports Composite, which rates him as a four-star athlete. He is the No. 21 running back in the country according to the measure.

Barkley becomes the fourth member of Penn State's Class of 2014, joining safety Jarvis Miller, offensive lineman Ryan Bates and defensive end Kamonte Carter.

My favorite part was the “medical” staff attending to the guys that fell from 30+ feet in the air. They basically walked over to a lifeless contestant, flipped him on his back, transferred him to a Civil War era stretcher and then carted him off. Hooray for spinal injuries!!!

side note...modern day ski jumpers are never more than 10-15 feet off the ground (I did not know this). These flying guys are much nuttier!

Vert, thank you! That video is amazing! It seems like half of the contestants did not know how to ski jump. The form used back then and the form used today are so drastically different. However, I wish ski flying was in the olympics -- i loved watching people wreck themselves on that hill.

Also, those dudes are flying 2x as far as the ski jumpers competing today.

Landed 3 recruits last night at psu's junior day. More could be coming soon. Write ups below.

Kamonte Carter
Gaithersburg (Md.) defensive end Kamonte Carter was a Penn State lean long before James Franklin took over in Happy Valley, and the four-star prospect according to the 247Sports Composite committed to the Nittany Lions on Saturday while on campus for junior day.

Carter confirmed the news via text message with Lions247.
"I committed because it has everything I'm looking for in a school - academics, good football and I love the energy," said Carter.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pound junior chose the Nittany Lions over scholarship offers from East Carolina, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan State, N.C. State, Nebraska and Pittsburgh, among others.

He is the No. 6 prospect in Maryland according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He is the No. 22-ranked athlete nationally.

Carter had 16 sacks as a junior, despite missing a few games with a minor knee injury.

Ryan Bates
Warminster (Pa.) Archbishop Wood offensive lineman Ryan Bates came to Penn State on Saturday for the Nittany Lions' first junior day with the school as his top choice. The Top247 prospect committed to head coach James Franklin before leaving campus.

"There isn't a place I'd rather be than Penn State," he said in a text message. "Glad to be part of the family!"
The 6-foot-5, 280-pound prospect is the No. 146 prospect in the country according to 247Sports. He is the No. 5 player in Pennsylvania and the No. 16 offensive tackle nationally, though he will likely play guard at Penn State.
He chose the Nittany Lions over scholarship offers from Auburn, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, South Carolina and Virginia, among others.

Bates was an all-state selection as a junior. He helped lead Archbishop Wood to a state title in December.

Jarvis Miller
Suffield (Conn.) safety Jarvis Miller made the most of his weekend visit to Penn State, meeting with the new staff in State College on Friday and spending the day Saturday taking in the Nittany Lions' Junior Day festivities.

Before he left town, he had made up his mind.
Miller was offered by Penn State head coach James Franklin and became the Nittany Lions' first commitment in the Class of 2015 on Saturday afternoon.

"I just committed, I'm pretty excited," he said. "They offered today. They pulled me aside and offered right there. It just felt right. It was the right college. The atmosphere, the coaches, it was a family atmosphere. I really feel good about Penn State and they're a program on the rise.

"Most definitely this was the right pick. This was home."
Boston College, UConn, UMass and Maryland were recruited Miller, but Penn State was his first and only scholarship offer.

The 6-foot-2, 188-pound safety is a two-way standout in high school, Miller ran for 1,611 yards and 17 touchdowns as a junior. He also led his team with 81 tackles, adding three pass breakups and an interception.

Miller had the third-highest SPARQ rating at the New Jersey Nike Football SPARQ Combine held on Feb. 1. At the combine he clocked a 4.64-second laser-timed 40-yard-dash, a 4.25-second pro agility and a 32.5-inch vertical jump.

You fellas were my first loves and will always have a special place in the ol' Heavener ticker.

While on the video games topic, Destiny is also supposed to be super rad. Apparently, it's an open world game and your avatar drops in and joins up with others to complete missions and battle bad guys. Perfect for someone who has no friends or lives in a far away land.

http://www.theverge.com/2014/2/7/5388758/activision-says-destiny-will-be-best-stelling-new-video-game-ip-ever

My Lena update of the week: She's teething and it sucks, but only at night. She still wakes up 2-3 times a night. Everything else is pretty great.

I've only watched one event (normal ski jump) for the Olympics. It's kinda a bummer but we've just been busy with other things -- like Lena. Working out is also a top priority these days.

The weather here has been comparatively fantastic. It's usually in the upper 40's and tomorrow will be sunny and 60. The only downside is the skiing is pretty poor. But compared to last year's brutal winter season extending all the way through May, I will take it. You guys on the East coast seem to be getting snow every other day.

I am starting to look at hotels and flights to Dublin for the Penn State game. I'm likely going to be there from Wednesday to Monday that week. I'm assuming Vic won't be coming anymore since his spawn will be due around that time. **Sniffles**

I've been picking up more responsibility at work. I'm finally starting some patent prosecution work and I've started managing some litigations. Good stuff all the way around. It probably won't change anything as far as our exit strategy (i.e., get the fuck out of Germany), but it's nice to be busy and challenged for a change. I think Jono can relate.

Tomorrow we are making our own sushi for the first time. I've been watching sushi making videos on youtube. It doesn't seem to difficult. It's just a matter of getting all the stuff and laying down a good technique.

Lena is as stubborn as her mother. Both refuse to take a pacifier. We're hoping Lena doesn't get in the habit of thumb sucking because that would seem to be a lot harder to "lose" than a pacifier. On a side note, no teeth have poked through yet but she eats about everything so far.

I dropped my phone in the bath tube last night. Lena was acting all cute so I snapped a picture. Then she flipped over and I had to reach in and save her. I forgot to drop the phone first and then I saw something glowing under the water...strange I thought...oh shit I thought next. I gave it CPR just in case but the thing never skipped a beat.

in our own fun baby news, we're trying to get hanna to give up her pacifier. this is going to be hell. last night, we cut some slits into the end of one of her favorite ones and she hated that. she's going to flip her shit at night but it has to be done. hooray for not sleeping!

last month was hell at the house because we were completely remodeling our master bathroom. caruso's uncle steve lived with us for just over a month and did an amazing job (http://goo.gl/X1JyJH). it's crazy how much goes into remodeling projects. you think once you rip everything out you can just throw up walls and be done, but damn, there are a lot of fine little details that need to be addressed. glad we did it but even more stoked it's over. ps - joo, i have yet to poop in the new super pooper. i can't wait to test it out.

next week i go down to nashville for work. i'm hoping to secure some pappy. doubt i'll be that lucky.

what's new with the rest of you fools? lots of down time on the board recently. joe, you a partner yet? still stuck in your crappy little office?

I'm very happy how the class turned out. As long and Franklin and Co. can put some solid wins on the table next season it looks like everything has worked out for the best. BOB can suck it!

I've been on a fix it kick as of late. A few weeks ago my ipod from circa 2007 went kaputt. Tragic!! Well, it was only the headphone jack that went kaputt. I was able to find the part here in Germany and swap out the jack. And it worked!

Last weekend I took apart my macbook pro (also circa 2007) and swapped out the hard drive with an SSD. That went pretty smoothly too, except when I was half way through I realized I needed a T6 torx screwdriver. So with my computer split open, I had to run out to the store before it closed for the rest of the weekend. Now my old computer has a little more pep in its step -- probably about 2x or so faster -- and more memory. The goal is to get it to last the rest of our stay in Munich.

For my birthday, Kate took me on a brewery tour at the largest Weissbier brewery in the world. Only 10 miles outside of Munich. She surprised me by inviting a bunch of our friends along for the ride. It was a really great day. After the tour we had 2 hours to drink all that we could. I sampled everyone of their 8 beers in that time.

In Lena news, she started scooting herself across the floor 3 weeks ago. She's almost able to pull herself up on all fours instead of slinking around like a worm. Let the constant chasing begin...

The Super Bowl sucked, as you guys know. It really sucked being out until 5am. But my boss being the American that he is, let me sleep in a little and work from home.

Blue Band trumpeters are playing "Hail to the Lion." James Franklin starts clapping to the beat. His assistant coaches, university administrators and assorted donors and VIPs follow along.

It's Signing Day at Penn State.

What was for decades an event that the longtime coaching staff wanted to receive as little public attention as possible -- the loudest sounds that came from the Lasch Building were the ring tones of the fax machine -- has, in one fell swoop, become what is essentially a day-long pep rally.

The lobby outside the coaches' offices in Lasch on Wednesday morning was transformed into a "war room" -- a long table in the center, multiple flat-screen televisions lined up around the room, and a "big board" of prospects on the wall nearest the door. Penn State assistant coach Charles Huff and a rotating band of guest introducers -- everyone from former linebacker Michael Mauti to Blue Band director Richard Bundy -- announce the Class of 2014 signees one at a time as they listen through the speaker phone or, in some cases, get a grin at the scene through Face Time.

Penn State assistants pace through the room, alternately fielding calls from both incoming signees and 2015 prospects. They'll be handed phones by recruiting staff or hand their phones to Franklin, who looks like a head chef coolly stirring five different pots at once. When it's time for one of the signees to formally be announced, he'll subtly signal for silence, and a room of about five dozen people quickly grants it.

When the name is called, Franklin leads a rousing cheer, and someone will stick a magnet bearing that recruit's name into the designated slot on the board. The first "pick" was the first letter to arrive -- that of Jason Cabinda. The last signee to fax a letter, Franklin says, won't be referred to as "Mr. Irrelevant" but rather "Mr. Dramatic Pause."

As the name is going up, Franklin easily slips into conversation with the player. He'll make a crack about the weather, tell the recruit to give his mom and dad a hug, and end each call with "Get ready to work, man." before sending an assistant out into the hallway to continue the discussion by phone.

Franklin arrived in Lasch shortly before 6 a.m. -- he jokes to ESPN's Pedro Gomez that he came in on a snowmobile -- and his staff was there by 6:30. The head coach sips from a smoothie, the remnants of an iced coffee also nearby. At one point, offensive line coach Herb Hand takes a break from chatting to go prepare an omelette.

Between announcements, Franklin chats with current players Jordan Lucas and Nyeem Wartman, who are wearing small smiles that are equal parts amusement and surprise -- they seem as taken in by the show as anyone. Early enrollees Michael O'Connor, De'Andre Thompkins and Antoine White stop by as well, and, one by one, Franklin scoops up his young daughters, Ava and Addison, and quarterbacks coach Ricky Rahne's young son, Ryder, to help them put the early enrollees' names on the board.

The TVs are tuned into ESPNU's Signing Day coverage, and it is somewhat surreal to watch the coaches watch their class -- and others around the country -- being discussed by analysts.

"Alabama stole the big board idea from us," one assistant coach says, focusing on the background on the screen as Nick Saban chats with a reporter. "We started that at Vanderbilt."

Gomez is filming live shots from a few yards away in the crow's nest above the weight room. He describes the excitement and energy in the room just as the room falls silent so that the staff and bystanders can listen to him do so.

Franklin did this at Vanderbilt, too. Later in the day he'll hold a press conference to discuss the class with reporters, then head to the Bryce Jordan Center to celebrate the class with fans. For now, it's draft day and signing day and a cocktail party -- with coffee and juice instead of alcohol -- rolled into one.

It's Signing Day at Penn State. And Franklin, in terms of both the day and his tenure, is only getting started.

as tony said, happy national letter of intent day to all! so far this am, everyone but 3 players have faxed in their loi. 2 of the dudes left to send are on the west coast and the other is a solid lock so no drama here. they are also still waiting to see if brown pulls the trigger for the good guys. we'll know soon.

here's a nice article on franklin and how he's the man.

When James Franklin was hired at Penn State on Jan. 9, the Nittany Lions had commitments from just 16 prospects. By the end of that weekend, that number was at 18, and today, including the five early enrollees who joined the squad the following week, Penn State's Class of 2014 checks in at 24.

Penn State introduces James Franklin
A third of Penn State's Class of 2014 came on board after Franklin was introduced on Jan. 11.

Experts and fans alike can't wait to see what Penn State's new coach and his staff do with a full recruiting cycle.

"It might have been a tough spot for an unknown coach," said 247Sports national recruiting writer Steve Wiltfong. "But a guy like James Franklin who already has a reputation going to Penn State, which has an extremely high football prestige reputation, there was recruiting momentum from the day he was hired. When it became public, he was able to land a few recruits that day, and it just dominoes."

Each of the eight prospects that committed to Franklin -- not including Louisville defensive end Lloyd Tubman, who opted for Kentucky this week -- had been previously pledged to another program. Five of those were committing to him for a second time after previously committing to Vanderbilt.

Like the rest of the class, which elected to stay and play for Franklin after committing to Bill O'Brien -- Thomas Holley, Troy Vincent and Donte Raymond were the only three O'Brien commitments who opted to go elsewhere -- those players liked Franklin's vision for the program.

"I think that all these guys really believed that the rise of Vanderbilt was tied much more to James Franklin than anything else," said 247Sports national recruiting analyst Barton Simmons, "and so when he brings his whole staff with him, and he's put in so much sweat equity with these guys, it really is a heck of a referendum for his rapport with these kids."

Simmons believes the fact that seven Vanderbilt assistant coaches followed Franklin to State College was a big reason why Penn State closed with a class that finished just outside the nation's Top 20.

"Not only are you able to sort of continue to preach the same clear message with the new program, particularly with a program like Penn State that had some of the similar selling points, but I think even more important than that is the chemistry is still there," Simmons said.

"When the kids come on their official visits, they're not sitting there witnessing a coaching staff trying to get to know each other and jell. This is a coaching staff that's comfortable with each other, knows each other, knows strengths, can create an environment on campus that is really welcoming for these guys and makes it feel like family. I think that's as important as anything. When you've got a staff that's got to get to know each other before they can feel comfortable much less make the kid feel comfortable, that can be a tough task. I think that Franklin's kind of got his own little family in place, and that really helped their efforts late in the game."

The stars of the class are the offensive skill players -- wide receivers De'Andre Thompkins, Chris Godwin and Saeed Blacknall, tight end Mike Gesicki and quarterback Michael O'Connor -- but, thanks in part to the late additions, Penn State was able to fill some needed holes along the offensive line and in the secondary.

Simmons likes the long-term potential of athletic offensive tackle prospects Brendan Brosnan and Chance Sorrell -- both Vanderbilt decommits -- and loves the cumulative skill set of what he believes is a versatile group of defensive backs, headlined by safety Koa Farmer and cornerback Amani Oruwariye.

The efforts of O'Brien and his staff, who were severely limited by NCAA scholarship restrictions until late September (and even then still somewhat limited in this class), should not be discounted. But nor should the efforts of the new staff in assembling a third of the class in less than a month. It might be a precursor for even bigger things, said Wiltfong.

"The recipe was there for him to finish strong but a true tell is that I think he's going to do a really great job in the 2015 class, because any time you have a coaching change at a major university, you do reap the rewards of it on the recruiting trail," Wiltfong said. "You saw that with Bill O'Brien in his first year. I think you'll see that with James Franklin also because he has already proven himself to be one of the best head coach recruiters in the country. And his staff, they get after it on the trail as well."

Wiltfong thinks Penn State will start looking to pull some talent from outside its traditional recruiting hot spots due to both the relationships Franklin's staff has already established there and the knowledge that the head coach relishes recruiting as much as he relishes competition.

"He's going to go after the big fish now at Penn State," he said. "They're going to continue to recruit at a higher level, and it'll be interesting to see how it plays out."

Watched this last night. Overall I'd give it a 6 or a 7 out of 10:
Positives:
Gratuitous smoking hot naked women
Excellent acting by Leo and Jonah
Fat Jonah Hill. Always better than the skinny one
Sprinkles of humor (ie Lemon scene)

Negatives:
Way too long.
Unnecessary scenes (is Lemon scene)
Some arcs went nowhere (ie Butler arc)
Too outrageous, especially wrt the drug use.
I also didn't like the way they teased explaining what was actually going on. Leo's monologues drove me nuts.

I seriously don't think I will ever watch this again because it's so long.

the staff is definitely doing work. in addition to christian campbell (see below) they have been offering scholies to dudes all over the country hoping to flip people late. the thing to note about these late offers is that the dudes they're offering are still quality prospects, mostly in the south. take this dude for instance, torrence brown, 6'4", 228, athlete from Tuscaloosa, AL (Tuscaloosa Academy) (32nd best player in alabama). he's a 3* guy who is committed to southern miss but is now back on the fence. again, our staff is out there kicking ass.

Christian Campbell:
Penn State added a surprise commitment at the final hour of its Class of 2014 on Monday evening, securing a pledge from Phenix City (Ala.) Central defensive back Christian Campbell.

The 6-foot, 181-pound safety picked the Nittany Lions over scholarship offers from Boise State, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri and Southern Miss, among others. He was slated to choose between Indiana and Minnesota following official visits to both over the weekend.

He was recruited for the Nittany Lions by Brent Pry, who went to Alabama in January to visit with Campbell. James Franklin and his staff recruited Campbell while at Vanderbilt.

Rated an 86, three-star prospect by 247Sports, Campbell is ranked the No. 66 safety nationally and the No. 24 player in Alabama.

Campbell finished his senior season with 56 tackles, eight pass breakups and an interception. He was an honorable mention Class 5A all-state selection in 2013.

As a junior in 2012, Campbell recorded 83 tackles, three interceptions and five pass breakups.

Campbell was a member of the Alabama side in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic in December. He was a standout at practice all week and recorded nine tackles in the game.

Hafer you are slacking....

Set to decide between Minnesota and Indiana on Monday night, Christian Campbell learned of big news that he couldn't ignore.

"I committed to Penn State," he told Scout.com. "Yeah, I just talked to Coach [James] Franklin.

"Yes, I committed!"

Franklin recruited the Phenix City (Ala.) Central defensive back for some time while the head coach at Vanderbilt, and he reached out to the three-star again afer accepting the Penn State job. An official visit never materialized, and he wasn't offered until Monday.

"Just to let y'all know, Coach Franklin been recruiting me before Minnesota and Indiana, know your facts," Campbell Tweeted soon after informing Scout of the news. "Y'all just don't know how hard it was!"

Ranked as the No. 122 safety in the class of 2014 at 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, Campbell upped his stock after his senior season as one of the premier defensive backs in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star week practices and the game itself.

View a sample of his late work, which resulted in late offers from Minnesota, Indiana, Missouri and several others in addition to the Nittany Lions, from his big week below.

I was talking to Weary tonight and didn't realize this is how the Pro Bowl ended. I would have loved to have been in the Mandalay Sports Book when this happened.

all of them. they're all entertaining for the most part. some of them (hand especially) is a beast when it comes to twitter. as tony said, he's a middle-aged white dude, which makes it even funnier.

i'd say following hand and franklin (who now handles the new recruit announcements: he tweets, "we are... better" every time we land someone, something that had been done by psu football recruiting) is good for bare bones coverage.

i knew about this weeks ago thanks to a slip-up by vakster et al.

vak and lulu were watching hanna for us and we were standing in the kitchen talking about something or other and vak said something about kids in response to some jab i made about popping out kids now that he's married (or something like that). lulu just happened to walk into the kitchen, heard what vak said, and then blurted out, "WAIT, you told him?!?" it was then that i knew about the little egg roll. TRICKED 'EM!

James Franklin and the new staff at Penn State continue to build its future roster with prospects from all over the country. On Saturday the Nittany Lions added a preferred walk-on commitment from Miami (Fla.) Belen Jesuit Prep placekicker Jorge Powell.

The two-star prospect is in State College this weekend for an unofficial visit.

"It's been great so far," Powell said on Saturday evening. "It seems to be the best fit for me and I really like the new coaching staff."

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound prospect was previously committed to a scholarship to Tulane. He decommitted from the Green Wave on Jan. 20. He also had an offer from Florida Atlantic.

Powell is the No. 2 kicking prospect in the country according to Kornblue Kicking's Fab 50 rankings. He is the No. 11 kicking prospect nationally according to Kohl's Kicking.

Powell hit 9 of 12 field goals this season with a long of 47 yards. He was 28 of 30 on extra points as a senior and had 40 touchbacks as a senior.

Penn State added to its late run in the Class of 2014 with a commitment from Sherman Oaks (Calif.) Notre Dame safety/linebacker Koa Farmer on Saturday. Farmer was on campus for an official visit this weekend.

Farmer confirmed the news in a post on his Instagram on Saturday evening.

"The journey is done!" he wrote. "First I want to thank California-Berkeley for the great and outstanding opportunity. It has been a long and powerful journey! I am blessed to announce that I will be ending the recruiting process and attend Penn State University were I will become Dr. Farmer and fulfill my dream of becoming a PhD in Pathology!"

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound junior was previously committed to California. He also had scholarship offers from Arizona State, Colorado, Vanderbilt, Washington and Wisconsin, among others.

Farmer was high on Vanderbilt before James Franklin was hired to be the head coach at Penn State.

The senior is the No. 214 prospect nationally according to 247Sports. He is the No. 13 safety nationally and the No. 24 player in California. He is the No. 31 safety nationally and the No. 41 player in the state according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Penn State is hoping to sprint to the finish line with its first big official visit weekend under new head coach James Franklin.

Welcome back to the 'S' Zone, a collaboration of notes on the Nittany Lions and Penn State recruiting put together by Lions247 editor Sean Fitz, 247Sports.com National Recruiting Writer Steve Wiltfong and Lions247 recruiting analyst Cory James.

It's important to note right now that we're working with the understanding that Penn State has four more scholarships to give in the Class of 2014.

Visit Weekend On Tap
Penn State is set to kick off its first official visit weekend in the James Franklin era. Right now we have eight prospects set to begin their visits on Friday, six of which are already committed to the Nittany Lions. Ironically, all eight visitors hail from different states.

Riverside (Calif.) Notre Dame safety/linebacker Koa Farmer has made the cross-country trip, and Tampa (Fla.) Gaither defensive back Amani Oruwariye will be up from the Sunshine State as uncommitted prospects. We've mentioned several times that we expect Oruwariye to leave a Nittany Lion, and all signs point to that happening by Sunday.

Farmer still has a visit to Wisconsin set for next weekend, and the Top247 Cal commit will likely decide on signing day. Penn State has a shot to make a real splash this weekend.

For the other visitors, it will be a reunion of sorts. Five of the six committed prospects were previously Vanderbilt pledges. Linebacker Jason Cabinda had to bump his visit from December because of his state championship game.

Here is the list that we have confirmed as of Friday morning, but don't be surprised if Penn State tries to sneak a surprise or two in for a visit. More on that later.

Koa Farmer - Saf./LB - Riverside (Calif.) Notre Dame
Amani Oruwariye - DB - Tampa (Fla.) Gaither
Brendan Brosnan - OL - Park Ridge (Ill.) Maine South
Jason Cabinda - LB - Flemington (N.J.) Hunterdon Central
Grant Haley - CB - Atlanta (Ga.) Lovett School
Trace McSorley - Ath. - Ashburn (Va.) Briar Woods
Chance Sorrell - OL - Middletown (Ohio)
Lloyd Tubman - DE - Louisville (Ken.) Seneca Valley

In addition, Penn State will also host a number of committed prospects on unofficial visits.

Mark Allen - RB - Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha
Marcus Allen - Saf. - Upper Marlboro (Md.) Wise
Troy Apke - WR - Mount Lebanon (Pa.)
Noah Beh - OL - Scanton (Pa.) Prep
Chris Godwin - WR - Middletown (Del.)
Troy Reeder - LB - Wilmington (Del.) Salesianum
Johnathan Thomas - RB - Danvers (Mass.) St. John's Prep

Penn State will also hold the annual Kevin Dare High School invitational this weekend, and Coatesville (Pa.) safety Jay Stocker will be a participant. The Top247 prospect has arranged, through his coach, to meet with the Penn State staff in his down time. James Franklin and Bob Shoop came by his school last week to see him and meet with 2014 commitment DaQuan Worley. At the same time last year, Worley actually came up for the Invitational and met with Bill O'Brien's staff.

Aiming High
Give it to Franklin, he's setting his sights high for the remaining spots in the class. A number of prospects, many of which fall in the Top247, are considering the Nittany Lions once again.

District Heights (Md.) Bishop McNamara offensive lineman Damian Prince was visited by new Penn State offensive line coach Herb Hand on Thursday. Right now Prince is looking to visit Penn State sometime next week, before his official visit to Florida next weekend. Right now I'm told details of the visit have not been set up, but if the Nittany Lions get him on campus they certainly have a shot. Prince is familiar with Franklin from his days at Vanderbilt.

Englishtown (N.J.) Manalapan wide receiver Saeed Blacknall was in for what was actually an unofficial visit last weekend. By all accounts, the four-star prospect really enjoyed his time on campus and had a good connection with the new staff in Happy Valley. When he left, the Nittany Lions' staff felt good about where they stood with him. This weekend, he's scheduled to visit Rutgers. There was speculation that he may make the trip to Penn State for his official visit instead, but I'm told he will indeed be in Piscataway. He still has the option to visit and he remains a potential flip. There is concerns that he does not want to deal with the pressure of decommitting from the Scarlet Knights, however. Right now, he wants to see what kind of plan Rutgers has in place for building its depleted coaching staff.

Monroeville (Pa.) Gateway athlete Montae Nicholson is a name that we've heard regularly over the last week. The Penn State coaches have been by the school, and with the addition of Terry Smith to the coaching staff things seem to be getting interesting. Smith was Nicholson's coach at Gateway, and that could be a very big deal moving forward. Nicholson and his family are adamant that they're firmly committed to Michigan State, but nothing would surprise me in this recruitment. Also, you'll notice I've listed Nicholson as an athlete. It's my understanding that Penn State is recruiting him as a wide receiver at this point, which is something that he wants to hear. Michigan State is expecting Nicholson on campus in an unofficial capacity this weekend. If he makes it to East Lansing on his own dime, it could be a telling sign that he won't end up in the Penn State class.

In regards to Blacknall and Nicholson, I'm told that Penn State would only take one of the two due to numbers. Virginia wide receiver commit Jamil Kamara is still on the board as well, but he remains committed to the Cavaliers. No word if he actually has an offer, but the staff has remained in touch with him and was expected to visit with him on Thursday.

Here's a new name in the WR/DB mold - Los Angeles (Calif.) Cathedral athlete Ladarius Wiley. The three-star prospect, who is currently one of the better kids committed to Purdue, has been in touch with the new staff through Ricky Rahne in the last week. He visited Virginia last weekend and is set to visit San Jose State this weekend. We haven't confirmed an offer from Penn State, but he's a versatile athlete who Purdue was really excited about getting. Just a name for the memory bank.

We said earlier about possible surprises over the next two weeks, and none are bigger than a potential visit from St. Petersburg (Fla.) Lakewood offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn. The Top247 prospect is currently committed to Georgia, but he had a had a very good relationship with the staff at Vanderbilt and has been in touch with Herb Hand since he came on staff. While he has not confirmed a visit with us, sources around him said that he was heavily considering making the trip to State College before signing day.

Before committing to Georgia in July, Wynn had scholarship offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Nebraska, North Carolina, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. One well-respected college coach told us that he believes Wynn is one of the top five players at his position in the country.

Obviously it's a very steep uphill climb for this one, but it would be a very, very big fish for Franklin to land.

Next Weekend
We're not looking past this weekend at all, obviously, but there are a few notes worth documenting regarding the weekend of Jan. 31. We've noted that some committed prospects that can't make it this weekend

Penn State still has official visits set up with Florida defensive back Lamont Simmons and Illinois athlete Trent Sherfield. Simmons' offer was with the old staff, but he has spoken to the new coaches since their arrival. Right now, I think that visit will depend on how much space the Nittany Lions have.

Penn State has remained in regular touch with Sherfield, but they have been up front with him in saying that there may not be a spot available by the time that he visits. They still plan on bringing him in for a visit and have told him that they hope there is space available for him in this class. Sherfield remains committed to Vanderbilt, but not having James Franklin there does make a difference. He's slated to visit Vanderbilt this weekend.

Penn State is also getting ready to hold a visit day for walk-ons next weekend. I'll work more on getting names next week, after the big visit weekend, but so far three players have told me that they'll be on campus. Walk-on commit Troy Stivason will be on hand after taking yet another unofficial visit last weekend.

Hummelstown (Pa.) Lower Dauphin all-state kicker Joe Julius officially decommitted from SIU-Edwardsville, where he had a scholarship to play soccer, to pursue football. Penn State has been in touch since the coaching change and will have him visit next weekend. He has spoken to new running backs coach/special teams coordinator Charles Huff about joining the program, and has also been in talks with Cincinnati about kicking for the Bearcats.

One more name to add for next weekend is Andover (Mass.) linebacker Will Eikenberry. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound prospect is currently committed to Delaware to play lacrosse, but he'll likely pass up that opportunity to play football at Penn State. Eikenberry spoke with James Franklin on Saturday and was invited down. He actually was set to visit on Jan. 17 with the old staff, but obviously had to postpone.

Eikenberry was a first team all-MVC selection as a senior. He recorded 112 tackles, forced five fumbles and picked off three passes. He had been getting football interest from Boston College, Delaware and New Hampshire.

Quick Hitters
- We've mentioned Penn State holding its Junior Day on Saturday, Feb. 15. Add another big target to the list of attendees, as Lexington (Va.) Rockbridge County offensive tackle Austin Clark will be on campus for the event. He has been in touch with the new staff and says he's excited to meet them.

- On Thursday we had an update on St. Peter's Prep quarterback Brandon Wimbush, who will be attending the Junior Day on February 15. His teammate, four-star defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick, told me this week that he would be getting out to Penn State for a spring practice.

- It's starting to become evident that the new staff is casting its net in a wider radius than the old staff. That's not saying the new way or the old way will be more productive, but the new staff is looking a little harder at the Midwest than Bill O'Brien and Co. did. Penn State was back in Detroit this week, and don't be shocked if underclassmen like Daelin Hayes make it back to campus soon to check things out. Hayes was emerging on the radar for the O'Brien regime, most recently visiting for a game in November. He'll be a bigtime target in 2016 if he does not commit elsewhere early.

- Penn State offered five-star Florida wide receiver George Campbell out of Tarpon Springs (Fla.) East Lake late this week. While it may seem like (and probably is) a pipe dream for Penn State to land Campbell, there is a back story worth exploring. Campbell plays for a Team Tampa, one of the premier 7-on-7 teams in the country, which is coached by Woodrow Grady. Grady's son, Josh, is a sophomore quarterback at Vanderbilt. I'm told that the elder Grady has a great relationship with James Franklin and it's not out of the question he would bring kids up from that area to visit Penn State when time allows. Also playing for Campbell as a part of Team Tampa? Gaither defensive back, official visitor and potential commitment Amani Oruwariye. That's going to be a relationship worth watching in the coming years.

I think Franklin was a great hire (especially given some of the turds being considered). He was a hot coaching prospect and it reflects well on PSU that we were able to get him. I'm not completely sold on his actual, in game coaching ability, but he is a beast on the recruiting trail. Recruiting is the most important thing in college football in general, but it takes on an even greater importance at PSU right now given the depleted state of our roster. Also, our division is going to be very tough and OSU, with Meyer and now LJ, is a juggernaut right now.

My only quibble would be that I would have preferred Bobby Engram to Terry Smith. I've heard a lot of negative things about Smith, including some first-hand interactions.

I'm already pumped to see what he can do with a full year to recruit next year's class.

Shoop will be DC and coach safeties.

Very, very sharp, intelligent, been able to put a top 25 defense togehter for three years

Donovan will the the OC, from NJ, another guy wiht strong ties to this area.

Huff will be special teams coordinator and coach RBs. ... Charles with us at Maryland and Vanderbilt, then Bills. ... a lot of coaches talk about how important special teams are but it's lip service. We are committed to being great on special teams.

Pry ... known Brent for a long time. Brent's father is from Altoona, my offensive coordinator in college. Had a big impact for us at Vanderbilt, in recruiting, dealing with the media.

Gattis offensive recruiting coordinator and WR coach. We're going to have a recruiting coordinator on both sides of the ball.

Hand will be our run game coordinator and offensive line coach. He is a beast on Twitter and social media. Will do a great job working with our offensive line.

Rahne our passing game coordinator and QB coach ... did a great job developing QBs ... helped develop Josh Freeman. Cornell grad. His wife is from Pittsburgh

Terry Smith defensive recruiting coordinator and coach corners. Got to know Terry years ago through recruiting ... fact he was able to leave HS ranks and go to college was important, and for us to get someone with Penn State ties on our staff was important.

Sean Spencer ... "Coach Chaos" ... was putting together a really good defnsive line. You'll see the type of impact he has on a whole relating to the players.

Galt ... probably the most important hire we've made. I've been with Deej for over 13 years now. He's kind of the Yoda of the program. Always players sitting in his room talking to him. Usually bounce every idea I have off of this guy.

Finally situated in Happy Valley, James Franklin and his staff will host its first official visit weekend starting on Friday. As of Wednesday evening the confirmed guest list stood at two uncommitted prospects, six committed to the Nittany Lions and several more commits in an unofficial capacity.

The Nittany Lions are still hoping to get a visit from five-star offensive lineman Damian Prince, who will take his SATs on Saturday morning. As of Wednesday things were still a work in progress for making that happen.

Also mentioned for a potential visit is Chicago (Ill.) De La Salle four-star running back and former Vanderbilt commitment Mikale Wilbon. Fresh off of a trip to Nebraska, Wilbon told 247Sports that he would probably be visiting Missouri or Penn State this weekend, but he'll likely be headed to Columbia for his second official visit.

Official Visits

Uncommitted

Koa Farmer
Safety/Linebacker
Sherman Oaks (Calif.) Notre Dame

Earlier this week, Cory James reported that Farmer would likely be in Happy Valley this weekend instead of Vanderbilt, and those plans were confirmed with the staff on Wednesday. Farmer just added an offer from Wisconsin, and it's one that will make the Cal commit think. Don't be shocked if he ends up visiting Madison next weekend before making a decision the week of signing day. Ricky Rahne is the man on point for the Nittany Lions.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball picked up some Penn State action this week when Cory James, who has been in touch with Farmer for Lion247, made his pick for the Nittany Lions.

Amani Oruwariye
Defensive Back
Tampa (Fla.) Gaither

Things continue to trend upward for the Nittany Lions with the three-star defensive back choosing to visit Penn State over Vanderbilt, where he was previously committed. Oruwariye hosted James Franklin earlier this week, in a visit that the senior prospect said went well. He has no visits planned after his trip to State College this weekend.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball recently saw a run of picks for the Nittany Lions for Oruwariye. Barring an unforeseen change, the safety could very well be the next Penn State commitment.

heaves, math doesn't lie. it just sucks.

here is your football update from the weekend. franklin flipped 2 more vandy recruits (grant haley, 3* cb from atlanta, and trace mcsorley, 3* dual-threat qb/athlete from va) and is working on filling the last 2 spots with big name dudes. one target is a current rutgers wr commit, high 4* saeed blacknall and the other being any number of dudes (including several 4 and 5* guys).

franklin should fill out the last spot in his staff this week (rumor of a 4 pm presser on friday to unveil everyone) with herb hand, ol line coach and official badass) officially announcing his resignation from vandy yesterday. he's been confirmed through sources that he's coming to psu and franklin has been telling recruits that he's on board. to be honest, the new staff may be better overall than the old staff, even with the departure of lj and vandy. the replacements are solid from top to bottom.

Article on Trace McSorley:
Three-star quarterback Trace McSorley took an official visit to Penn State over the weekend. He arrived as a Vanderbilt commit but the staff he had committed to was now recruiting him to Penn State. For McSorley the message rang true again on a new campus and he made the decision to commit to James Franklin for a second time.

“I made my commitment to Penn State,” McSorley said on Monday. “I was on my official and just checking it out, meeting with some of the players and everything felt right. It was a great opportunity so I was hanging with the staff I already knew and felt comfortable with. I love Coach Franklin, I love Coach (Ricky) Rahne, the whole staff feels comfortable with me and feels like I can be an impact player.”

It was Franklin, Rahne and the rest of the Penn State coaching staff that attracted McSorley’s initial interest in visiting but after learning more about the Penn State program, the Ashburn (Va.) Briar Woods standout decided that it had everything he was looking for.

“The staff is what really got me interested and looking at it,” he said. “Once I did some research and found out that they’re the 37th ranked school in the nation, so still good academics and you can get a good degree. The alumni base is one of the biggest in the country as far as alumni go. Being able to come to a place with this tradition, I knew they had tradition but once I got here you could come and really feel what it’s all about.”

McSorley has yet to hear from the new Vanderbilt coaching staff and new head coach Derek Mason but he doesn’t plan on taking any more visits following his new commitment, including an official visit that was scheduled for next weekend in Nashville.

“I’m locked down so I’m just going to take my official visit here and that’s it,” he said.

Already McSorley is excited about the prospect of lining up in Happy Valley.

“I’m getting chills thinking about running out of that tunnel in front of 100,000 and it’s an amazing feeling and I can’t wait for it.”}

Article on Grant Haley:
Penn State has flipped its second Vanderbilt commitment of the day. On the heels of landing a pledge from Ashburn (Va.) Briar Woods quarterback Trace McSorley, Atlanta (Ga.) Lovett School defensive back Grant Haley has committed to the Nittany Lions.

He did so while on campus for an unofficial visit this weekend.

"I just committed to Penn State," he said on Monday afternoon. "I committed after seeing their campus and looking around, seeing the stadium and seeing how it's a great fit for me, personally."

Haley originally committed to head coach James Franklin at Vanderbilt in July. He followed the new coach to Penn State when he took the lead post for the Nittany Lions.

"He thinks that I can come up and do some things my freshman year and become part of this program just like he did," he said. "They want me to play corner, kick return and punt return."

Haley will return next weekend for his official visit.

Sources tell us Western Michigan running backs Charles Huff will join James Franklin's staff at Penn State. Huff served on Franklin's staff as assitant special teams coach in 2011 and was assistant running backs coach for the Buffalo Bills in 2012.

He was the MAC's top recruiter and it wasn't close. He's also very young - about 30.

psu coaches have been popping up all over the state/region/country, stopping in to see/offer recruits. so far they've been to schools around philly, nyc, va beach, richmond, dc, and out to cali. tomorrow, a bunch are off to jersey and who knows where else. this gives me wood.

A couple of thoughts on the assistants that have gone public with their move:
Rahne is the best recruiters you've never heard of. He has made Vanderbilt a major presence in the midwest and on the west coast. With PSU next to his name, he's going to really rise in the recruiting rankings over the next few years. He's a guy that outworks others on the recruiting trail. He's also, in my opinion, a really good coach. I expect that if Donovan moves on at some point Rahne would be elevated to OC. He has been the guy that Franklin has been molding. He played QB at Cornell and was one of their all-time record holders. I actually played against him in college and he could sling it. I don't think he has HC aspirations, but I'm betting he'll be a stud OC at some point, very possibly at PSU.
Gattis is another rising star on the recruiting trail. Big personality guy, young, relatable, played at a high level in college at Wake Forest. He had the tough task of trying to bring Vandy elite talent out of south Florida and his biggest pickup was Jordan CUnningham. He also was given the Memphis public schools to recruit, and immediately made Vanderbilt a factor there, where they never really had been before. He's also a guy that helped develop Jordan Matthews and Chris Boyd into an elite pair of receivers. Boyd would've had a big year if not for his dismissal from the team prior to the season.

Here are the guys invited/expected to join the Penn State staff.

John Donovan (OC, RBs)
Bob Shoop (DC, safeties)
Ricky Rahne (QBs)
Josh Gattis (WRs)
Sean Spencer (DL)
Brent Pry (LBs, Co-DC)
Dwight Galt III (Strength)

OL coach Herb Hand is expected to join if he does not get the Vandy job.

PSU is also linked with top ACC recruiter (#3 in the nation) Chip West for the DB coach job. He's currently at UVA.

Park Ridge (Ill.) Maine South offensive tackle Brendan Brosnan has flipped his commitment from Vanderbilt to Penn State, his head coach David Inserra confirmed with 247Sports.

The 6-foot-6, 275-pound Brosnan is the third pledge for head coach James Franklin since coming to Happy Valley from the Commodores program.

"Big, big reason is Coach Franklin," Inserra said. "We believed in him at Vanderbilt and what he was doing at Vanderbilt and what he was building, and when coach Franklin left, we were hoping he'd be interested."

Brosnan is ranked by 247Sports as the nation's No. 79 offensive tackle. He is commit No. 22 for Penn State in the class-of-2014.

"He hasn’t been there yet but everything about the football program, tremendous academics school, beautiful campus, he's set on following Coach Franklin and playing in the Big Ten," Inserra said of the reasons Brosnan is a Nittany Lion.

He mentioned it was the unselfish decision to make...so that Penn State can move on. Psssht! I blame OBrien for taking Vrabel away from OSU in the first place. Oh well, thank you for your service.

i think this is the best guess as of right now on who fills out franklin's coaching staff. i'm really excited that the new strength coach is going to be the guy who taught and mentored fitz, dwight galt. dude must be a beast.

1. HC - James Franklin
2. OC/RB - John Donovan
3. QB - Ricky Rahne
4. WR - Josh Gattis
5. OL - ??? (Herb Hand if he doesn't land the Vandy HC job)
6. TE - ???
7. DC/DB - Bob Shoop
8. DL - ??? (LJ Sr)
9. LB/Co-DC - Brent Pry
10. STs - Sean Spencer

Yep, good stuff. Plus it seems like all our current commits are staying. The QB O'Connor was talking about delaying his enrollment until June or bolting, but last I read he's back on board with his January enrollment. I think 3 others from his class are also enrolling and starting classes today.

I'm looking forward to seeing what staff JF decides to surround him with. It could be a rough couple days for Larry Johnson. Hopefully he still wants to stick around, but even if he does, I'm not sure it's a slam dunk that he'll get an offer. Though, he almost has to, right? JF needs at least one guy on his staff that knows the ropes of the program and none are better suited than LJ. Here's an article on the predicament.

Being how strong Vandy's defense was (according to one of Hafer's previous posts), I'd think JF would want to bring many of his defensive guys along.

"Operation Put that baby in a crib" was a success this weekend. Lena did much better than we expected and she seems to be back on a schedule.

I broke out the kettle bells for the first time since the holidays started. And, for me, the holidays started with Joo's wedding, so, um yeah. It feels good to be achy and marginally less fat.
