Date Posted: 09:23:34 01/10/14 Fri Ah, back to Germany. Thanks Hafer for keeping things going on here. It is good to be home after 3 weeks of being away, even if home is overrun with grumpy Germans. Everyone is doing well back in the States. We spent about 10 days with each set of families and kept pretty busy. I got everything I wanted from Santa! Several xbox games, an external hard drive, a hard drive enclosure, a ski mask and gloves, the first season of the Simpsons in German, and an electric shaver I'm starting to really like. I plan to use my new computer accessories to sway out my harddrive on my laptop with a new SSD. Here's hoping I don't screw everything up! We got back last Friday. Lena was a peach on the plane, but we didn't let us sleep any. My plan to combat jetlag is usually to sleep as much as possible on the plane back to Europe. Since this didn't happen, I was pretty much destroyed. Whats more is that I had a full day in the Austrian Alps on Saturday. I got up at 4:30a, largely due to not being able to sleep until 5:30, to catch a bus to get down to the slopes. Skiing was great but man was I tired after lunch. Skiing was done by 4:30p and we were forced to drink at the bar until 8:30 before the bus would take us home. It was like being trapped in a less fiery hell. I wanted to sleep so badly. Luckily the beer and many shots of jager helped keep me going. Luckily II, the bus made two bathroom stops on the way home because I slept through the first one and really really had to go by the second one. I finally got back on to the Munich clock a day ago. Lena is doing good. She is over 6 months and full of tricks. It's really a fun age. She's sturdy enough now to throw around but light enough that I don't kill myself. She's not crawling yet, thank goodness, but she likes to spin on her tummy. She is dominating mushy solids and working on her first teeth yet. Her sleep habits are completely nonexistent from the 3 weeks in the States. I guess we will be starting sleep training over, starting tonight. Sigh. As Hafer pointed out, craft beers are making a surge here in Germany. I credit myself 100%. There is a new craft beer place 4 blocks from my apartment. It expensive when you compare it to the other much cheaper German beers, but the flavor change is worth the deeper dip into the pockets on occasion. Joe, are you a shareholder yet or when does that go into effect? If your shareholderness has come to fruition, sorry I missed it and congrats!! I am looking forward to my Philly visit in May. 2014 is all about working and setting myself for resume-ing in 2015. Kate got a crazy idea that it would be fun to live in the Research Triangle area in North Carolina when we head back to the states. She thinks it would be a good compromise between families and she read the quality of life is really good for families. I almost had to slap her for such nonsense. I've always said that if we were going to move to the middle of nowhere, it would be in canoodling distance of Jono. Besides, the deal we made when moving to Germany was that I got to pick the next location, and that will certainly not be any in of the following states: Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, South Carolina, North Carolina, West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, or Maine. Also, congrats to Poyser on kid #2. Hafer, how's your mom doing? Did she have an assessment lately? |
| Subject: here is some stuff from the message boards | |
|
Author: hafer [ Edit | View ] |
Date Posted: 19:37:33 01/09/14 Thu here are some posts that sum up JF from the lions247 boards. post 1: I thought it would be nice to put together a run down of the guy who might be our new coach. I've digested everything I could over the last week on youtube, through cfbstats.com, news articles, message boards, etc etc. Personality: He very easily could be called brash. He doesn't hold back at all. He's had confrontations with coaches and the media. He's going to rub some people the wrong way, and I like it. I can imagine that he's going to have a good time going head-to-head with Urban, and those two will bring a certain SEC flavor to the Bland Ten. It will be interesting to see how PSU fans handle him. He's totally the anti-Joe, which I think many of us will embrace but some might not take too, at least immediately. He is clearly an emotionally intense guy. Has been brought to tears on several occasions at press conferences. I love that. He's going to say a lot of things that aren't politically correct and he's going to make headlines for his mouth from time to time. Again, I love that. Makes CFB fun. He's got a little Spurrier in him. Strengths: He is a total players coach. He is someone who, like OB, embraces the idea that CFB should be fun. You can really see this in the video attached below. Players really love him and they play hard for him. He's a GREAT motivator. This strikes me as perhaps his best strength. He also appears to surround himself with motivational types while embracing different activities and exercises that can be motivating. This is another thing I think he has in common with OB, but might be even better. Recruiting. No need to even talk about this. He's totally turned Vandy recruiting around. He's going to kill it. Coaching staff. From what I can tell, he has really embraced the SEC blueprint which I'm in favor of: Skew young. Go after really high energy guys who can recruit and motivate and will kill themselves on the job. If you want to win, this is what you gotta do. This is a guy who has WHOLLY embraces the rivalry component of the game. He took the Tennessee games personally. IMO this is a great trait for a coach, as rivalry games are both excellent ways to motivate your players and great ways to excite your fanbase. Again, something we need. Seems to embrace the role of being a college football head coach This is something OB hated and was terrible at. Franklin will sell the crap out of this program to everyone who will listen. This is something he has been universally praised for at Vanderbilt. He is a total salesmen and will keep people to rally around the program in a big, big way. The coaches caravan was nice, but Franklin will do things that will blow it out of the water. He likes being the face of the university. His offenses have really struggled over the years, but his defenses at Vandy have been excellent. Top 25 rankings the last two years. This is a great sign from an "offensive coach". He seems to really encourage a "family" environment. He has a few young kids who are always seen around the program and he encourages his staff to do the same. He's often had his kids at his press conferences even. He makes his family pretty high profile, which again I think is a great way to connect with the community. Weaknesses: Offense, offense, offense. This is really got to be THE concern. Over six years as an OC at MD and now HC, he's had bad offenses. Terrible in some cases. Never had one ranked in the top half of the country in total yards per game. It's hard to know what to make of this, as he is widely respected as a good offensive mind. I'll be watching his offensive hires closely and watching closely to see what changes to makes to the offense. His Record: We all know he's gone 9-4 each of the last two years, but what's more impressive than the 9 wins are the 4 losses. This past year Vanderbilt's 4 losses came to Ole Miss (UR, 8-5) by 4 points (and anyone who watched this knows it could have gone either way), South Carolina (#4) by 10 points, TAMU (#18) by alot, and Mizzou (#5) by alot. The previous year was more of the same, with all 4 losses coming to 10+ win teams, with three of those losses coming by two scores or less (including a 4 point loss to 11-2 SCar). This is a team that has outplayed it's talent. Nothing could be more of a positive indicator than this. His results aren't a fluke. Finally, I really encourage you all to check out this ESPN All-Access Episode from last year, which I've attached below. If I think of anything more I'll add it. You guys should check out his youtube stuff. A lot of cool things there that will give you an idea of what sort of coach he is. In conclusion, this has to be seen as a great hire if it does in fact come to fruition. An infectious personality, ace recruiter, and great motivator. If he can figure out the offensive stuff, he's going to be a great coach for us. post 2: James Franklin is one of the most passionate HC recruiters In the country. I've seen Coach Franklin speak twice. His positive energy is second to none and he gets his message across very well. He's a great fit at Penn State. A Pennsylvania guy, he knows the lays of the land and comes from a institution where academics are just as important to on-field production. Franklin is very involved in the recruiting process and demands that from his assistant coaches. They're going to be just as competitive as recruiters as they are during the season preparing for games. I think that Franklin will be able to slide in and continue building where Coach O'Brien left off. post 3: 247Sports National Analyst Barton Simmons has more coming on James Franklin, having covered Vanderbilt closely. Here are some more thoughts I just wrote down. James Franklin’s wife knows that even when he’s at home and the cell phone rings with a number coming from a recruit, he’s taking the call. That’s what the new Penn State head coach told a group of reporters in Nashville two summers ago. Franklin talked about that and many other things regarding how the former Vanderbilt coach built the Commodores into a competitive program. Now Franklin will look to lead the Nittany Lions to Big Ten championships and into the National Title picture. Reported by CBS Sports’s Bruce Feldman, Franklin is expected to be the next head football coach at Penn State. Folks are going to be very happy in Happy Valley. A passionate football coach, leader and outstanding recruiter, Franklin heads to Penn State as the perfect coach to pick up where Bill O’Brien left off in building back up the Nittany Lions program. As a recruiter, Franklin is as involved a head coach as you’re going to find in the country. He’s passionate and knows how to get his message across to student-athletes, their parents and their coaches. The Commodores have signed two of the best recruiting classes in memory under Franklin, and look for Penn State to continue competing for Top20 and Top10 classes with him at the helm. The 41-year old Franklin has already built a reputation as a national recruiter. Over the course of his career, including stops at Maryland and Kansas State, the Philadelphia native has built recruiting in-roads across the country. The current Vanderbilt recruiting class has a quarterback from California, several Midwest players, along with talents from Florida and Georgia. When Franklin arrived at Vanderbilt, through development and game planning, he and his staff took a 2-10 program the year before and led them to a bowl game. Inheriting a Penn State team that went 7-5 last season with former five-star quarterback Christian Hackenberg still holding onto three years of eligibility, Franklin will begin work with a roster that is more talented than the one he played with in Nashville. O’Brien did an outstanding job of leading Penn State through the tough times that led to Joe Paterno’s exit. With the finish line in site and only two more season of probation before the Nittany Lions are free to play in the postseason, Franklin is the right guy to carry the torch into the next era of Nittany Lions football. post 4: from the last vandy signing day thinger - http://www.youtube.com/v/8f0csVsA0NA post 5: espn thing - http://www.youtube.com/v/N_v_8fbyjuc post 6: http://goo.gl/1yxvbb |

Date Posted: 10:14:33 01/09/14 Thu Here's what we're hearing as of Thursday morning. - Rodney Erickson and Dave Joyner were in Florida yesterday to meet with James Franklin. I'm told that Penn State had entered negotiations with Franklin on Tuesday afternoon. Penn State's offer was matched by Vanderbilt, and the Nittany Lions made a hefty counter offer. The pair left Florida with signs pointing to Franklin being the next head coach at Penn State. I believe the two sides are close with Franklin's agent hammering out final details. Like I've said all week, I think Thursday is the day that it gets done. - As we noted, Penn State made a hefty counter offer to Franklin. With that said, it's probably about as high as the Nittany Lions will go. I'm told that if things can't be worked out with Franklin for whatever reason, Penn State will move on and make an offer on Friday to Al Golden. I still expect something to get done today. |

Date Posted: 10:07:11 01/05/14 Sun We were supposed to visit Steep and Grind this morning so I could stock up on coffee for my new coffee grinder; but of course Claire started running a fever last night. Kids! The holidays are over with. I spent Xmas Eve to NYE in Erie this break. As usual an abundance of alcohol made this time go by easier. The girls got way too many toys and pretty much only play with the newest toy they got. I'm sure I could just wrap up old toys and they would love that. Highlight of Xmas for me was the new laptop we got. Went with an Acer that has a touchscreen. I'm still getting used to Windows 8, but so far I have no complaints. It's certainly not as intuitive as Vista or 7 were. Once you learn some of the shortcuts though it becomes better. Losing BOB to the Texans was disappointing. I guess since I haven't been as invested in the team these past couple years that this wasn't devastating news for me. I am, however, looking forward to putting this behind us and finding a new coach ASAP. Hmm, I think I've said that before recently. New Years resolution for me is to get back into shape. We toured the YMCA yesterday. We are evaluating our options for somewhere that has workout facilities and activities for the girls like swimming lessons and dance classes. |

Date Posted: 13:30:55 01/03/14 Fri Hearing that we should expect an announcement on Monday or Tuesday. The search has been narrowed to two candidates, James Franklin and Al Golden. PSU has met with both (and their agents). The prevailing thought is Franklin is a better coach and Golden a better recruiter. The source said they could not discern a preference for either and thought both to be great choices. All other names being thrown out are not in serious contention. FYI - Munchak is not being considered as much this time around. Apparently they want to go with a younger coach. Munchak had verbally agreed to take the PSU job in December of 2011, however, Bud Adams (owner of Titans) threatened to sue Penn St. if they took "his" coach. Penn St did not want to deal with a lawsuit as this was in the heat of the Sandusky scandal and then moved on. If you recall, Joyner exuded confidence heading into the holidays in 2011 but this all broke down during holidays. Some top guys stopped their vacations early to come back and find a coach which ultimately led to OB. I personally thought Munchak would be the first consideration, but it was made clear to me that it wasn't. |

Date Posted: 17:19:10 12/31/13 Tue Happy New Year, everyone! I have so many excellent memories of NYE involving all of you. I really enjoy reminiscing about things on days like today. I took off and hung out with little Miss B at home. Ali had to work today and she is on her way home now. We are going to keep things low key tonight, drink some beers, and sleep before midnight. 2013 was an exciting year for all of us. A couple of us got married and a couple of us welcomed children into this world. Many of us were able to get together in person this fall with the weddings and bachelor parties -- I will always cherish those memories. I cannot believe I picked up a stomach virus in NYE -- I still have not gone back to eat at McDonalds. Also, Vic tried to and succeeded in besting my performance in NY on the Sunday of his bachelor party in Vegas. We continue to be a global message board with Heavener in Germany but we are looking forward to that coming to a close. 2013 was some helluva year and now its time to look forward to 2014. I am blessed to have each of you in my life and I am lucky to call all of you my friend. I hope that you and your families have a healthy, happy, and successful 2014. |

Date Posted: 19:18:20 12/30/13 Mon Ok, so I did a little digging and this is what I've found out. I wanted to find out why multiple recruits were telling me the same thing….you know, you've heard it before…."I talked to Coach O'Brien and I am happy with what he had to say." A little too exactly worded from everyone to be a coincidence. So what I've heard is that O'Brien has told the recruits (in some cases without even being specifically asked) what his plan is. From what I hear, O'Brien told them he was negotiating with Penn State into improvements in the program to include facility upgrades and recruiting resources, etc. He also told them that no matter what you hear, I am not going anywhere. I've even been told by some recruits that they would be "shocked" if he left. This despite everything that ESPN is saying. Now, that is what I know….the rest of this is rumors that I have heard from sources. I have heard rumors that Penn State had pretty much shot him down at first. I have heard rumors since then, as recently as today, that Penn State has since agreed to most of what O'Brien had asked for…..not everything, but nothing major that should hold things up I wouldn't think. So what do I think happens? I mean, it doesn't make any sense from the things that I have heard for O'Brien to go out of his way and lie to the recruits. If he didn't intend on being at PSU, why would he lie? If this was his scheme all along, and Penn State really did give in and offer to give him most of what he wants….then this could all be a big Houdini act. If O'Brien leaves, then either Penn State didn't cave and that rumor is untrue, or O'Brien went out of his way to lie to people he had no reason to lie to. For that reason, call me a sucker, but I believe Bill O'Brien will be back at Penn State next season. |

Date Posted: 09:44:19 12/30/13 Mon from lions 247 As of Sunday night, here's where we stand: - Bill O'Brien is still the head coach at Penn State. As I've reported a few times, there are ongoing negotiations between the school and the coach to amend his contract. On the block, from what we've been told, are things more on a resources and personnel standpoint than things like his salary. I'm told that the negotiations are a work in progress and I'm not totally sure when a resolution could come, though I would expect Penn State is eager to get this behind them. I'm told things have been back and forth between the two sides and will eventually have to go to the board for approval if terms are agreed upon. As I said earlier today, I was more confident that a deal would get done a few days ago. O'Brien and his people will continue meeting with higher-ups over the next few days. If anything, I believe the negotiations show that O'Brien is at least open to returning to Penn State if things work out. - It was reported earlier on Sunday that Penn State is preparing for life without O'Brien. While that's an interesting way of saying it, Penn State is indeed getting names together so they can hit the ground running if negotiations don't work out with O'Brien. They're covering their bases so they won't be caught on their heels. In the last coaching search, I was adamant that Penn State wouldn't hire someone with prior connections to the University, but now I believe that could definitely be a possibility should a coaching search happen this time around. I've said it before, but I think Penn State is back to being an attractive job. I think there would be plenty of interest this time around. - I said it a few days ago, but O'Brien is going to listen to NFL teams, he would be foolish not to. It's important to note that interest, interviews, 'being at the top of the list' don't always translate into offers. Right now we're unsure if O'Brien even has an offer from anywhere, let alone the Texans. I expect more speculation to come out tomorrow with coaches being let go all over the league, with his name also being linked to the Browns, Redskins and Vikings as well. - Gut feel? Right now I'm leaning to him taking an NFL job, but I've gone back and forth about 40 times in the last two days so my thoughts could change by the time I wake up tomorrow morning. |

Here are some updates with me: * I cannot believe my team mounted a late season charge and will be playing in the Fantasy Bowl this weekend -- I am hoping my second ever appearance in the title game goes better than my first appearance * I went to my Christmas parties and took it easy too -- I was just too concerned about child care issues the next day to really get after it ... it was nice not having a massive hangover * Tonight, we have the last bowling night of the year ... things were going great and our team was doing excellent up until about 4 weeks ago. Poyser decided to read some bowling tips and he tried to fix our deliveries ... this had a profoundly negative impact on my average (dropping it from 199 to 189 in 4 weeks). I look to turn things around this week. * I am really enjoying the fantasy EPL league and the EPL in general. I love having something to watch on Saturday morning. * If you are ever bored, check out Vice's YouTube channel. It is awesome and full of entertaining, short documentaries. * I am starting my Christmas vacation on Friday and will be out of the office as much as possible until January 2nd. I can't wait to recharge my batteries. Also, I will be in-law free this Christmas break ... it will be super relaxing. |

Date Posted: 08:40:09 12/18/13 Wed wow, a jono posting! how fun! glad to hear everything is alright with you cats out in the midwest. to your question, this year, caruso and i are asking for a bunch of lowes and home depot gift cards. we're remodeling our master bathroom and closet so that's going to be fun. caruso's uncle will be staying with us until the project is done, hopefully less than a month. he starts right after new years. hooray! caruso and i watched the victoria's secret fashion show the other night as we do every year. damn, those chicks are quite hot but, as caruso pointed out, the models are all getting freakishly thin. back in the day, the models had curves and looked healthy. not so much anymore. but whatever. boobs! monday night, caruso and i went down into dc for the soft 99.5 jingle ball at the verizon center. my work has a corporate box and my boss put together the trip. there were tons of teen girls and lots of shitty music. we left early because caruso picked up the stomach bug that went around her school. we made it home but she had a fun night. she's all better now. her immune system is garbage. my mom had her blood clot filter removed on monday. the procedure usually takes 30 minutes but, because the pin on the filter was tilted and hard to grab, it took almost 3 hours. fun! she's doing fine now and goes back to her oncologist monday to get an idea of what, if anything, comes next now that she's done with her chemo. hooray. just a quick follow-up on my post from yesterday, the jersey lb is now official as a commit. dude's name is donte raymond. keep your fingers crossed for another commit today from a juco o-lineman, last name is are. |

Date Posted: 21:56:53 12/17/13 Tue Hey fellas. I am alive and well and if you're on Twitter, you probably know this. I hate that I cannot post on here daily when shit pops into my head. I have so many random thoughts/funny shit I see or hear about and this f'ing site just continues to haunt me with being blocked at work. Anyway, stuff: - The kids are great. Can't wait for Christmas. Should be extra fun this year. I get the feeling that we bought too much. - My parents will be here for Christmas, which is going to make it even super-awesomer. They get here Thursday and leave next Thursday. We have some fun shit planned and I have a few days off of work. - Work is wrapping up nicely for 2013. Amy & I both had really great years at work and that is turning out to be really good for the family. We're in a good spot right now all around. - Amy's work party was a few weeks ago and was a lot of fun. The highlights were a family hour with a really great Santa showing up (William loving it & LEwis hating it), a cowboy/country theme that led to me realizing how comfortable cowboy boots are, an great open bar and a Christmas miracle in the after party bar having Pappy Van Winkle 12-year. I bought one glass (I was bombed at this point so I barely remember how it tasted) and they price gouged me for $38. I know they gouged me b/c my buddy had an exact pour at a local casino last year for $16. Still, though. I HAD SOME PAPPY! - My work party was last week. It's pretty laid back and is more of a good time for the younger engineers, who go out, get hotel rooms and do it up down in the P&L District. We just were old people, drank domestics & wine and left by 10:30. To our credit, or more appropriately to discredit the assumption that we're super old and boring, we did have a family party to go to early the next morning so we didn't get too crazy. - Good luck to Joey G this weekend as he goes for the PSU/A-Town fantasy football title! Exciting times. Also, fantasy football is dumb. - The NBA is great! Portland is super fun to watch and I'm excited to have Christmas at my house this year and thus have NBA games in the background all day. - I had a tough time coming up with a Christmas list for those who wanted to buy me stuff this year. I will probably regret/not use 50% of the stuff I put on there b/c I got some flack for originally putting "Amazon gift cards"/"Banana Republic gift cards"/Cash/etc. Amy did get me some really great work shoes (we exchange early b/c we're both dumb and can't wait to give presents), so it's at least off to a good start. Anyone getting/expecting anything fun? That's all. I have to go change Will's shitty diaper now b/c he still won't shit on the toilet and holds it all day until he goes to bed in a diaper and then shits more than an adult male at 8pm on Thanksgiving. Parenting! |

Date Posted: 11:37:18 12/05/13 Thu Infineon Technologies is a provider of semiconductors and system solutions for automotive and industrial electronics, as well as chip card and security applications. So yeah, semiconductors is the name of our game. We deal a lot with power devices, power management, regulation and control, sensors and feedback control, microcontrollers, security cards. I envision that the job and responsibilities are akin to what you currently do, whatever that is. Except here drinking during the work day is not frowned upon. Something tells me that experience in semiconductors is not necessary. I can try to find out more if you are interested. As for the Penn State game in Ireland, I can buy tickets whenever with my fancy Euro currency. Tickets currently range from 20-95 eur. Penn State has a lot of seats blocked off on their sideline (lower side) at the moment. http://www.ticketmaster.ie/penn-state-nittany-lions-v-ucf-dublin-08-30-2014/event/18004AEA9B082097?artistid=836126&majorcatid=10004&minorcatid=102 |

Date Posted: 13:14:50 12/04/13 Wed Another thing that's good about Arob is that he is adept at routes at all levels (short, middle, deep). That's definitely not the case for all the other wrs in the draft (like Mike Evans, who is a physical beast, but only really runs deep routes at this point). Sammy Watkins is a tremendous athlete, but he's not a polished route runner at this point. I think Arob and Jordan Matthews (another guy whom I think will fall b/c of his 40 time) are pretty similar; I like them both. |

Date Posted: 12:52:37 12/04/13 Wed It still baffles me as to why NFL teams put such weight to 40 times for receivers. To me agility and fluidity are much more important compared to pure high end speed. Oh, being able to actually catch is pretty important too. Yea Im talking about you darrius heyward bey! Look at some of the top receivers over the past few years bryant (4.52), green (4.5), marshall (4.52), fitzgerald (4.63), boldin (4.71), welker (4.65). Also dont forget, jerry rice ran a 4.71! NFL GMs are stupid. In the end I think mrob runs in the low 4.5, high 4.4 range which will be a good time for a player of his size. Running 4.6 or above will be cause for concern because like I said, NFL Gms are morons. |

Date Posted: 11:48:33 12/04/13 Wed I had a nice Thanksgiving back in PA. My bro-in-law and sister had horrible colds, but my immune system held up and I survived unscathed. We did a bunch of nerd-gaming. My bil's cousin, who is a freshman at PSU also joined us for Thanksgiving. He really likes PSU, but he is still adjusting to the cold weather (He grew up in Quito). He's in the 5 year architecture program. Saturday, indeed, was an epic day of college football. Now onto Penn State-related items: - At this point, I am planning on going to the game in Ireland. I got an email that tix go on sale next week, but I don't think that I am going to purchase at this point because they are like $150. I am not too concerned about the game selling out, so I am planning on worrying about tix once I actually book a flight. - Next season, I definitely plan on going to the OSU game. Not sure about any others. - Allen Robinson's draft status will probably be determined on how fast he runs. He has good hands, good size, runs great routes, and has amazing leaping ability, but I think he might slip because I'm not sure he is super fast. That Wisconsin guy ran him down from behind pretty easily. It was also the reason he wasn't a big-time recruit. If he does slip, whichever team takes him will be getting a hell of a player (like Alshon Jeffery/Keenan Allen who fell because they weren't super fast). It would be even more awesome if he decided to return for his Senior year, but considering that he will be graduating early, I don't really see a reason for him to return. - Coach Vandy leaving the program is a little disconcerting. He was considered one of, if not the best lb coach in the country. He was also one of our best recruiters. Fisher leaving = meh. |

I'm still planning on coming in a few days prior to the game, maybe even all week depending on the number of vacation days I have planned out for the year. I think Joe, Lukey, Evan and maybe Vic expressed interest thus far. By the way, it looks like we will be in Munich when you (Hafer) are in France in June. So the chances of meeting up then have improved. Also, Infineon is in need of a commercial law attorney (contracts and some IP related topics) here in Munich. It sounds like it's right up your alley, Hafer. Let me know if you'd like to make the move to the land of beer and tubed meat. |

People on 24/7 say this could be used to bring in a dedicated OC (George Godsey's name is being mentioned a bunch) and get someone more in line with Butler's blitz a lot philosophy. Who knows. What's really funny is reading the few dumb people saying they should hire Lavar and then seeing the smart people completely obliterate their comments. My favorite example is below: I wonder how good of a coach a freak athlete like Lavar would ever make. I can see it now: "Now in this situation, you run at the line of scrimmage and jump over everybody, thus landing on the ball carrier resulting in lost of yards. Okay got it lets start the drills" |

Unfortunately, I've been spending most of my time in our lab these days. Recent policy updates have removed all Internet from the lab, so I am very disconnected these days. So many devices nowadays have wifi in them, so there's not much I can bring in the lab. Some of us have resorted to reading books and magazines, so barbaric! |

Date Posted: 13:47:16 12/02/13 Mon welp, all my family got together in vegas this year for thanksgiving. Obviously that woulda been awesome but I wasnt sure I could swing it with it being so soon after the wedding and honeymoon. By the time we decided to make the trip, the flight prices had gone through the roof so we ended up stuck in the area. It was fine though, we had a small little thanksgiving dinner with lulu's parents on thanksgiving day and attended a bunch of lunches/dinners hosted by friends throughout the rest of the weekend. The only downside to the weekend is lulu does almost all her shopping online during the entirety of the year, but for whatever reason she insists on doing a ton of shopping in stores during black friday weekend. Thus, I got dragged to some of that nonsense. Other than that it was nice to just stuff my face and have some downtime. Saturday's was an unbelievable football day. I think the stanford band play will always be the craziest most memorable single play in college football history. However, that iron bowl game and the finish as a whole very well could be number 1 all time. Loved that PSU closed out in spectacular fashion. What I love about BOB is how clearly our team improves from week to week under his direction. Both last year and this year the team we have put on the field during the final game compared to that which we put on the field during the first game have been vastly different. I am very happy with the last two years and am very anxious to see where our program goes once the sanctions are lifted. Lastly, I am convinced that allen robinson is a pro bowl nfl receiver. I hope the titans get him. Hed be a perfect complement to kendall wright. |

Date Posted: 11:04:27 12/02/13 Mon Our two Thanksgiving dinners (one Saturday and one Sunday) were a great success. I ate lots on both nights, but I perhaps over did it on Sunday. It was really uncomfortable to move after my second helping, Sunday. All I could do was watch the Eagles from the couch. My stuffing beat out Kate's dressing for the 3rd year in a row, and will continue to do so until the end of time. We each made a turkey for the dinner we hosted on Sunday. Both were delicious but I'll admit Kate's was better. To my defense, Kate played dirty by using a spicy rub and then covering the turkey in bacon. Mine was more traditional. I used a herbed apple cider brine, and then seasoned with thyme, rosemary and other herbs during baking. Brining is the way to go if you haven't tried it. I cannot wait for leftovers tonight. Kate miscalculated her measurements and we ended up with about a gallon or two of gravy. It's my mission not to let any go to waste. We made it out to the Christmas markets on Friday. I picked up a few trinkets for stocking stuffers for the the family back in the US and enjoyed some gluhwein before going home to escape the winter freeze. Ever since Evan mentioned his hemi on here and then on facebook, I downloaded an audio file on V8 hemis. I've been listening to that shit on repeat for 3 days now. You may even been able to see my boner from across the Atlantic. You'd also be amazed with how much glove box porn there is out there. |

Date Posted: 09:58:37 11/28/13 Thu I hope everyone has a great day today gorging on turkey and other delights. It feels very weird not being home in the US this time of year, but it's the 2nd year running now. We have a nice pot luck dinner planned on Saturday with some friends, and a 2nd small dinner that we are hosting on Sunday. All is not lost! We bought 2 3kg frozen turkeys that we are going to thaw, brine, season and bake in our itty bitty european ovens. Like Joe said, Christmas is coming up real fast. In nearly 2 weeks we'll be in the States. Our PA dates are 12/14-18 and 12/27-1/2. Let me know if anyone wants to get together. We'll be spending 10 days with Kate's family. While I get along with her family, the 2 fun people are her younger sister and the sister's husband. They will only be around 4 of the 10 days. So that leaves 6 days of complete and utter boredom. I plan on studying some German just to make use of the down time. I need to buy them an xbox just so I can get immersed in a game for 30-40 hours. The Christmas markets opened up this week. I will probably skip out of work early tomorrow and meet Kate and Lena in center city to breathe in all the holiday cheer. Lena is teething too, we think. She hasn't cut a tooth yet, but she is sticking her hand in her mouth more than usual and slobbering all over the place. Nights have never been super, but they have been getting noticeably worse. She's hated pacifiers from day 1, so there's no help there either. She's been eating like a champ. She loves the carrots, potato, apple, banana combination. |

Date Posted: 21:08:45 11/25/13 Mon I am very much looking forward to T-day where we can enjoy good beers and good food. It turns out that our company has decided to close the Friday after T-day effective next year. I didn't mind the Friday after T-day; I got a lot of shit done then. In other news, my new Durango has finally arrived. The sound of a 5.7L V8 Hemi is simply fantastic. The car has more than I could ever want, and that glove box is amazing! Most of the people that have seen it say the same thing about how mean-looking it is. I cannot tell you what it feels like to accelerate on the highway and hear that Hemi roar. I'm not racing 'vettes or anything, but the sound is simply fantastic. I got to enjoy the heat steering wheel and heated seats too since it has been cold out. I am very thankful that my life has allowed me to afford such a wonderful vehicle. In other news, we are about 2 months away from a brand new kitchen, and, thanks to the services of the great Justin Humes, we will have a new master bath around the same time. We would love to have people visit after then; kids are always welcome but we understand if the trek is too long; we will still find a way to see all of you. We suck with the thank you cards, we know this. We are sending them out as we can. Both of us have been working 15+ hour days so it has been tough. Thank you to all for being patient. |

While it's cheap, do you really need Chromecast if you have an Xbox or any other central media player? As for the Coin, I would love to jump on that train, but its usability in Europe is suspect. $50 seems like a perfect price for it. $100 not so much. Seems expensive for something that will die in 2 years. They should also make it rechargeable. Is that GIF Emma Watson? My goodness! |

Date Posted: 16:14:03 11/19/13 Tue Just booked a long weekend poker trip to Harrah's Council Bluffs, Iowa from Dec 28th - Jan 1st. I've been traveling so much this Fall, I decided I'm staying in the Midwest region for the holidays. I was in Newark, NJ and Allentown the 2nd half of last week for work and then stayed a few extra days at my Mom's. It was nice to see my Mom and sister, but after a few days, I'm usually ready to head back to MN. Starting to gear up for the fantasy football playoffs. I'm in contention in 2 of my 4 leagues. I've been break even on FanDuel the past few weeks but am looking to close out on the season on a high note. I really enjoy doing FanDuel and may scale down my fantasy leagues next year to focus more time on it. |

She commented a few times to step on the gas and stop driving like I was 80 years old. As you noticed out here, there is little to no traffic so I've lost my aggressive driving juices. |

Date Posted: 06:46:02 11/12/13 Tue Yep, I had a fun weekend out in Minny. Minneapolis is a nice, clean city that is seemingly devoid of traffic. At times, I was wondering where all the people were. The Korean bbq pizza was absolutely delicious. As Vert mentioned, Kevin Love's outlet passing is ridiculous. His shooting motion is also near perfect and he has a really quick release. He struggled a little trying to create offense when fed 1 on 1 in the post, but he is great on the offensive glass. Penn State stinks, but I expected a loss so it wasn't a big deal. Lastly, not sure if it's from moving out to Minnesota, but Vert now drives like an old man. |

Friday we saw the Wolves beat the Mavs. KLove made 3 or 4 awesome outlet passes to Corey Brewer. He also was lights out from the field. So awesome to see him live. My buddy Ricky Rubio did not play so well. Saturday we saw PSU lose to da Gophers on a windy day with low 40 temps. Not a very exciting game. Lukey pointed out to me that PSU has a crappy defense and punter. He couldn't have been more spot on. |

Date Posted: 12:36:59 11/11/13 Mon Bioshock is a good pick for games. Burial at Sea is just the DLC, not sure how that would work for you unless you bring your xbox back to the US. If you are looking for some games with longer playtime, I would suggest GTA V, Diablo 3, or Minescraft. Mass Effect is a great trilogy, my brother wrapped that up and liked it. |

Date Posted: 19:50:18 11/08/13 Fri ahh yes, HFM is a constant scourge of daycares. they had a recent outbreak at our place but it's pretty much the least scary common disease so not much was done to address it. pretty much, you get bumps on your face around your mouth, sometimes in your mouth and sometimes on your hand and feet. throw in a really mild fever for 2 days and that's it. just wait for the norovirus to get going. that's when things are fun. heaves, fluenz (aka euro flumist) is only approved for people aged 2-17 (for some gay reason). hopefully the label is expanded to cover up to 49 like the rest of the world sometime in the near future. we'll see. work has been nuts down here as well. one attorney from our north american business group (my group) was shown the door last week. this was followed up by one of the former head attorneys from medi (he moved to the business development group a few years back) being tossed. then today, the head of the specialty business unit (the head of the medi commercial group) + the medi head of hr and the medi head of finance were tossed with very short notice. my job is safe, it's more of a house cleaning of certain people but still. FUN TIMES! |

Date Posted: 19:36:32 11/08/13 Fri On the kid front, we've been doing sleep training since last Friday night. It was really awful the first 3 nights. Kate caved the first night and ruined everything. We started over on Saturday and Lena cried for an hour before giving in to the sandman. Sunday was the worst clocking in at 90 minutes of crying. 2 bottles of wine later, she was snoozing. Monday we saw some results at 35 minutes, followed by 7 on tuesday and 0 on wednesday and thursday. I was surprised the technique worked. Joe -- no idea what HFM disease is but it sounds awful. Dealing with a cold was bad enough. I hope that is well behind everyone now. I got my flu shot today in the arm. They are so barbaric here! Where's the Flumist? Work has been busy. Managing two big projects with the hopes of bringing in some dollars. 5 weeks before taking 3 weeks off so it's a bit of a crunch time. I'm trying to decide which xbox games to get. I want to bring back 3 with me, with the options including: Call of Duty: Ghosts; Bioshock Infinite; Bioshock Infinite: Burial at Sea -- Episode One ; Battlefield 4; LEGO Marvel Super Heroes; Splinter Cell: Blacklist; DmC: Devil May Cry. Any suggestions? I am thinking COD, LEGO and either Battlefield or DMC. But they all seem good. The bioshocks are supposed to be amazing. I was also looking back on Mass Effect trilogy as an oldie. Rated best game ever apparently. I think I've zero'd in on a laptop -- Macbook Pro, 256 SSD and 8 GB ram. I'll use my mom to buy it to get a teacher discount of $100. Kate wants a dyson for xmas. God bless her. |

Date Posted: 12:23:21 11/08/13 Fri Hello there. I think that I am finally sober from Vic's wedding. It was great seeing everyone there -- from what I can piece together from the evening, I had an excellent time. Things have been very busy at work these past few weeks. That's part of the reason why I have not posted. The other reason is that I am in about 7 different fantasy leagues covering all sorts of sports. Bridget picked up hands, foot and mouth disease last friday from daycare. As a result, we kept her out of there this past weekend. Ali took off on Monday, I took off on Tuesday, and my Mom took off on Wednesday-Thursday to watch her. She is back in daycare today. That's all the drama going on for me. Instead of a quack, the duck just chokes. |

Date Posted: 09:15:18 10/31/13 Thu I won't have to worry about any shortage here. They have stockpiles here and I'm probably among the few that buys the stuff. Germans hate spicy, or flavor in general. I can bring some back next time I visit. In manly news, I will be bold enough to say I'm going to get an electric shaver for xmas. Does anyone have experience with this one http://www.amazon.com/Braun-Series-7-760cc-Pulsonic-Shaver/dp/B003YJAZZE/ref=cm_srch_res_rtr_1 or this one http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-ES-LA63-S-Electric-Multi-Flex-Pivoting/dp/B002N5MHLU/ref=cm_srch_res_rtr_1 Lena once again did great on our flight. This time sleeping 6 of 7.5 hours. But the 30 minute car ride to Dulles did not go well at all. Lena pretty much screamed the whole way there. Which maybe tired her out enough to sleep 6 hours on the flight. A fair trade, I say. We've been adjusting back to normal life. I'm about there. Lena has a long way to go. She got used to sleeping next to Kate during their travels and so getting her back to sleeping alone in a crib is a challenge. We fully anticipated this, but it doesn't make it any easier. Come to find out, tomorrow is another one of those silly German holidays. It was a great surprise to find out Tuesday that it was only a 3 day week! I plan on fleshing out my xmas list and catching up on the DVR. Lena will magically transform into a penguin tonight and we are going to take her around to some of the neighbors. |

The extra money spent was well worth it - Definitely go the top end hotel route. We got a lot of great pictures, enjoyed a lot of great sites (and local brews), experienced a lot of cool stuff (zip lining, helicopter ride, breaching of lava) and did a shit ton of relaxing and enjoying great beaches, amazing food, and plenty of alchihol. Thank you for the wedding gifts!! PLEASE bear with us as struggle to get out thank you cards. We are moving as quickly as possible. In other news, my promotion is coming up in a month or so and apparently there is a significant pay raise with it. I am looking forward to this. Also, I bought a new ride (2014 Dodge Durango R/T) - It should be built and I will have it in the next 4-6 weeks. I bought it mostly because of the glove box. |

Date Posted: 08:46:40 10/15/13 Tue i think i've come down enough from my game high to actually recount the weekend in state college. holy shit. so lukey and i drove up a little after noon on friday, through our usual rain storm (every time we head to sc it's pouring rain... not sure why). traffic wasn't too bad so we made good time, pulling in (hehehe) to atherton street around 445 or so. after a quick stop to get some luggage from the people we were sharing the apartment with (kohan and some of his friends) we headed to our home for the weekend, kicked out the tenant and proceeded to drink a few beers. sufficiently hydrated, we walked into town for some big bowl followed by: 1) if lukey, a delicious peachy paterno ice cream cone; and 2) if everyone else, more booze. team 2 went to the deli and had some really good oktoberfest beers while waiting for salon to open (apparently, they didn't open until 8 because of the homecoming parade). once downstairs, we proceeded to drink lots of bong waters. yes, they still give you a terrible headache the next day but i'm pretty sure they're not nearly as potent as before as i had 3 and could still function. we stayed at salon all night (mostly for the sake of the people we were with, some of which were non-psu n00bs). we ended the night with some RU hungry (answer: yes), which was delicious. what was not delicious was spending time in line with some d-bag kid from jersey who would not shut the funk up. he must have been very cool because he came solo and people behind the counter told some of us that they were going to "forget" his order. saturday, we woke up to the sounds of metallica and quickly put point break into the blueray player. how this movie didn't win multiple awards is still beyond me. the acting and story are just beyond compare. whatever. around noon, we all head out for the long walk north. kohan and his friends go to the rv lot and we make it to our spot, but not after picking up some moosehead. some guy later really liked our selection as he insisted on shaking our hands in the lot saying something along the lines of, "great choice, you don't see a lot of that in pennsylvania." so yea, go moosehead. my cousin, her husband (who played rugby at psu back in the 90s), and their kids used my rents' tickets so we hung out with them and ate a ton of their sausages (i had 6, lukey had 5). furman came over and told us she's dating some dude in chicago who writes for sports illustrated, robert something (lukey will know). she's also working on some top secret project for the nfl network involving the texans. she said it's been awful (seeing as how they've been awful). we went over with her to her friend's tailgate (jen, the tall blonde curly haired chick) and watched some people play 2x4 jenga. it was intense with the loser having to drink a beer that some kids had been shaking for the entirety of the game. of course, the woman lost the game (it was 3 older dudes and some mom). on our way back to the usual spot, we met adam taliaferro (he still must not have full range of motion back because his hand doesn't quite work right, but still an amazing story). a few beers and a lot of harlot staring later it was time to head into the stadium. the game speaks for itself. what i will say is that: 1) some needs to be shot and or fired because the student section, specifically the senior stand, was never full (maybe 80 or so seats). this comes even after they oversold the section by 4000 tickets. inexcusable, especially for such a high profile game; 2) lukey and i heckled the shit out of the fair-weather fans who made for the exits early in the 4th quarter. perhaps one of the biggest waves of people leaving came after we kicked a fg to bring us within 7 about half way through the 4th quarter. why people thought it was a good time to leave blows my mind. we let them know it; and 3) the booing of the refs was quite good both for length and loudness. those refs sucked. after the game, we ate some more sausages before heading into town. we waited in line at cafe for 45 minutes and managed to grab a table on the deck after a little wait. the teas are still delicious. after last call, a few of us went to college pizza where we became best friends with john urschel. he was taking pictures with a bunch of people and shaking hands with even more. on his way out he was accompanied by some skinny blonde chick who i'm sure he destroyed a few minutes later. a quick note on college girl attire. college girls now dress like vegas strippers. from the super sloot dresses to the hooker heels, they do it all. we were shafted by the black pants craze. i also can't wait to meet/stare creepily at hanna's college girl friends. i can only hope i'm divorced by then. |

We then had a department retreat starting Wednesday afternoon in the Alps. The schedule was absolutely brutal with meetings from 8:30a-9:30p on Thursday, followed by a little bit of boozing each night. Yep, and it snowed a few inches while we were there too. Here comes 8 months of winter! Friday night, I got take-out on my way home from the retreat, closed the blinds in my bedroom and climbed into bed for what would be the best 11 hours of sleep I've had since college. I kept a low profile over the weekend. Being lazy and watching PSU eek out a W. I am jealous of everyone that was at that game. This week is business as usual. The girls seemed to be having fun in PA and they made it safely to Louisiana last night. |

Lena has been busy meeting her aunts, uncles and 5 cousins. Today, all the kids played hooky and we are going to the pumpkin patch. Having all 6 kids under one roof is an eye-popping experience. Date Posted: 21:26:55 10/03/13 Thu Amy's one and only aunt (her dad's sister) suddenly passed away this evening (she has a litany of health problems that have been cause for concern over the years but she was in relative good health recently, hence the surprise). They are going to try to iron out plans as quickly as possible so our family can decide what to do (Amy's parents were our weekend sitters, too), but the best case scenario is me coming to NJ for Evan's wedding all by my lonesome. There's a slim chance that all of the funeral stuff occurs on Monday, nothing will go down this weekend so Amy's parents can still watch the kids and Amy & I can both come, but we won't know any of that until mid-day tomorrow, likely. More to come... |

Date Posted: 12:22:57 09/30/13 Mon Welp, tomorrow is the big test. 9 hours on a plane with an infant. I hear it's not as bad as 9 hours on a plane with a toddler. We are really looking forward to touching ground tomorrow in the good ol' US of A. We have a bunch of packing to do yet but the flight isn't until mid-afternoon so there's plenty of time to pack and eat all our perishables. On Saturday, I'm hoping to get into Old Bridge by noon so that I can watch the PSU game. Not sure if the hotel bar will have it on or we will need to go somewhere else, but I'm hoping a few of you will join us. Also, there's the whole porn convention I've been hearing about, so maybe staying near the hotel grounds would be best. My flight on Sunday back to Munich is not until 8:something pm. I'm planning on going to a CHILIS near the hotel for lunch. All are welcome to partake it all its glory before shipping me back to the fatherland. Kate is then driving back to Allentown to spend a few more days with my family before flying down to Monroe for a few more days before flying back to DC to meet me there for Vic's wedding. Wowza! Looking forward to watching Breaking Bad tonight. |

Date Posted: 12:58:27 09/25/13 Wed since I'm a sans cable guy now, I'm relying on Hulu for my major network tv consumption this year. I'm going to give Brooklyn 99 a fighters chance. The premiere was a week or so ago and had some good moments. Something about Andy Samberg makes me want to giggle. I also favorited this on Hulu http://www.nbc.com/the-blacklist/ because I like James Spader. Also, I'm giving this show a chance, but it's on a short leash. http://www.fox.com/dads/ I think it will be terrible, but I have a soft spot for Ribisi. |

Date Posted: 00:07:26 09/23/13 Mon Absolutely perfect day for the wedding that Vic and I attended today (Mike's wedding, for those familiar with the DC-area Asians). It was outdoors at a vineyard that was a little over an hour away. The downside was that I missed the football. All 3 bridesmaids gave speeches at the wedding; it was as dreadful as it sounds. The best man also rambled for too long. In non-surprising news, I am in love with FanDuel. |

Date Posted: 05:55:34 09/21/13 Sat I caught Conan show this week where he had Louis CK on for the length of the show and it was pretty funny. Conan recently just celebrated being on the air for 20 years and Louis CK was on his original writing staff, along with Andy Richter, Robert Smigel, and Bob Odenkirk (some damn good talent), so they spent a good deal of time reminiscing about funny stories. Also, Conan reviews GTA: http://teamcoco.com/video/conan-highlight-clueless-gamer-gta5 |

Date Posted: 21:14:26 09/19/13 Thu I'm probably out for a full round, but I would probably be up for chip n putt. I don't think the Browns deal was bad. NFL teams put a ridiculous value on their future #1 picks. Obviously, Cle needs to find a QB before they can win and RBs have short shelf-lives. Richardson should fit in really well with Indy's Stanford-based offense, but reports are that the Browns haven't been super happy with him. Although, I'm not sure why Chud doesn't think he fits well in his offense. My Dad's in Europe, so I haven't gotten his opinion yet, but I know this is the first time that he's felt that, with Banner and Lombardi, they have a competent management team in place since the team returned. This draft should be interesting. Even with the trade, I think Jax is considerably worse than Cle. Cle has a good defense, and a couple quality young offensive players in Cameron and Gordon. This Jax team is the worst NFL team that I can recall. The 0-16 Lions were run and coached incompetently, but at least their roster had some good, young talent on it. This Jax team is literally devoid of talent. With that said, I think Jax will take Bridewater #1 - scouts consider him a definite franchise QB. That could set the Browns up to get Clowney (currently, the #2 rated QB is Boyd, but I wouldn't take him over Clowney) and, like Butts said, pick up a QB later in the 1st round or early 2nd round. |
