Date Posted: 11:57:40 07/24/12 Tue I got mostly sympathy from my co-workers yesterday. They realize that sanctions are painfully harsh and that my football fandom was crushed. I'm sure that folks in the Philly area are much better educated regarding the whole situation so our discussion mostly revolved around explaining how loss of scholarships work. |

Date Posted: 10:09:40 07/24/12 Tue Yesterday stunk. I have an 8am call every Monday morning and yesterday, I spent the entirety of it refreshing my twitter feed and first getting sad, then getting really sad, then getting angry, then getting frustrated and then ending up bummed out and pissed off. Our beloved football team will not be good again until 2020 and our beloved university is forever covered in mud. Fuck. The thing that I am most pissed off about is how the cultural feeling about Penn State is forever changed. As you all know, I hated Penn State football before I went to school there and hated it while I was there, for the 1st 3 years at least. I went to Penn State b/c I knew I was getting a good, respected Engineering degree. Penn State has come shops and academic accololades that not many people outside of the alumni and fan know about. Instead, they know Joe Paterno, the clean white and blue uniforms, Beaver Stadium, the Big Ten, etc. That's all fine and well as long as the football program is held in high regard, but now, because of this Sandusky mess those accolades are probably even further from the public's conscious when the words Penn State come up. I stole some of the following from a friend of mine who went to Pitt, but I agree wholeheartedly with what he said (and I am paraphrasing). I hate that I now feel that my education and degree is somehow in vain because of what happened in a locker room I would never be allowed in, by individuals that weren't even living on the same planet as me. It makes me fucking pissed. These awful crimes are light years removed from my day to day reality and are going to bring endless judgement from millions of morons (but more importantly, actual people I will come in contact with) who feel that Universities should be judged solely on football. I've already begun to experience this out here when I am a lonely PSU alum and it sucks. Yesterday in my office, I overheard numerous people discussing the sanctions and the statue being removed the everything Penn State. To give you an idea of how out of touch people who are not part of the PSU "culture" (students, alumni, players, people in PA who love PSU, etc.) I actually heard a guy being disgusted that Penn State students would try to compare these events and the statue being torns down as analogous to what happened to Marshall back in 1970. Confused, I reluctantly interjected and ask what this guy meant. He said, and again I am paraphrasing: "I was reading that article on Yahoo about when they were tearing down the statue and a bunch of students were yelling "We are...Penn State". You guys have a bunch of people molesting kids and you're idiot students think a statue coming down is like a bunch of Marshall players dying in a plane crash. Come on dude! Enough of that "We are" crap." I corrected him but you get an idea of what I am dealing with... (shaking my head) |

Date Posted: 11:15:50 07/23/12 Mon went to the eastern shore on saturday to do a random day trip. we went to chestertown and rock hall. the highlights of the day were: 1) buying amish-made patio furniture on the cheap from this insane roadside furniture store (may be worth going back just for this place); 2) eating my body weight in fresh crabs; and 3) going to a winery where the owner professed his love for strip clubs... in front of his 13 year old kids. sunday, we went down to arlington national cemetery with the tripps. i've never been there before so it was cool to see. we saw the changing of the guards and made many bridge/drowning jokes at ted kennedy's grave. they were well received. rest of the day was spent resting/doing chores around the house. |

Date Posted: 15:50:45 07/20/12 Fri I am back from Korea. I went over there on a licensing trip with a patent agent from my firm and two attorneys from the client. The meeting was only one day but we prepped a day beforehand. The meeting could not have gone better and I am happy that it is over. I may have to go back in November for a follow-up meeting. Heaves, if you need any help with licensing work, please consider my services. I have been working on getting readjusted to EST since I got back. I participate in a golf outing with one of our larger clients on Saturday. My team wound up winning our flights (beat 5 other teams) and then we also won the closest to the pin contest to win the whole outing. I now have a fun little trophy. Tonight, I am headed to a HH at the Phillies game as part of the young lawyers division of the philly bar. Tomorrow, pig roast at Humes. Sunday, rest and relax. I am going to try to hit the range this weekend to sneak in a little golf. Have a good one everyone. |

Date Posted: 17:53:57 07/16/12 Mon Things have been really busy since I've been back. I wish I wasn't expected to work while over here. Let's see if I can give you a quick run down of my going-ons. Movers #1 came the 3rd and picked up our stuff to put on the boat. The movers were a bit surprised to see a new sectional couch and some new IKEA furniture that wasn't there when they did the initial estimate. So there was initial worry that not everything we had marked for the shipment would fit in the reserved container, but I assured them it would fit or else my company would pay more. Long story short...it fit. I spent a lot of time tying up loose ends (canceling utilities, fixing some minor items that came up on the inspection, etc.). We also managed to sell the car for $3800 via Craigslist. Considering the shape of the exterior of the car, expired inspection, overdue oil change...maybe we shouldn't have gotten that much, but I'm not complaining. Now we are carless and soon to be homeless. My parents are bringing a car down Wednesday for us to use through Monday when movers #2 come to get the rest of out stuff to take to storage in Allentown. Then I have to drive back down to Arlington on the 25th for the closing. We still have to handle canceling our US cell phones, closing our bank account in VA, rolling my 401k into a ROTH, and sending out Verizon router back, but I think that's about it and all should be relatively easy. I realized that my cell number in my new business cards was wrong so I will be sending out another email with the correct number. I also have a US number people can call which connects though magic jack. That should work really well with my 80 Mbps fiber Internet connection. |

Date Posted: 16:34:10 07/13/12 Fri Tough time thinking but here are some thoughts. The Freeh Report I just finished reviewing the report. I did not learn anything in this report that I already did not know. One of the new revelations found in the report is that you can use circumstantial evidence to support conclusions. When conclusions are made in this manner, the person making those conclusions tends to have an agenda. That being said, I think that it is safe to assume that there were people in positions of power at PSU that did more to cover up the crimes he committed instead of bringing them to light as soon as it came to their attention. No shit. We knew this 10 months ago. The entire scandal is the result of a monster, lack of leadership, and failure to make a difficult decision to do what is right. The “cover-up” and lack of properly addressing child molestation chargers here is nearly as bad as the crime. The only thing people like more than building them up into larger than life characters is tearing them down. Am I embarrassed to be associated PSU? Yes. For the rest of our lives, the first thing that people are going to associate with PSU is this child molestation scandal. I am not a Joe Paterno supporter. I am also not a Joe Paterno hater. He was a damn good football coach and he cared a great deal about PSU. I am not going to call for the renaming of the library or the removal of his statue. Doing so would be a meaningless gesture. It does not repair the lives of the affected children and it does not affect Joe Paterno. You cannot punish the dead. It is tragic that he wanted to be remembered as a man who made Penn State a better place rather than a good football coach. Now, that will never happen. In today’s world, opinions are made in seconds and people are too lazy to form an educated opinion. Joe is gone and he will never have an opportunity to change them. |

With that said, those emails dont prove a thing and definitely do not prove the conclusions the feeh commission made off them, but they are definitely not good for joepa supporters. I think alot of joepa supporters have jumped ship due to those emails and now its "guilty until proven innocent" even more so than before for the paterno family. Dont know where you guys stand but Im still supporting paterno until I have concrete evidence that paterno had a hand in the coverup. If he really was so involved in the cover up I would think it would be quite easy to find more damning evidence against him than what has come out dont you think? Related to all this, I think jay pa has done an extraordinary job representing the paterno family during all of this. Every time I watch an interview he does I think he does a great job of handling all the questions that are fired at him. I would love to see what would happen if they subbed in scott for him. |

He told me that I should do my best to keep my friends in the loop. He has been talking with the Paterno family and Joe’s PR people and they said that this week is going to be a rough one for anyone who loves Penn State. They are going to try and paint a picture that it was Joe’s program and therefore he knew everything that was going on, but Jay and Sue truly believe that Joe did everything in the right way. They claim to have proof of that, that they will not be leaking to the press and it will all come out when the trial happens. Mike didn’t know when the investigation was coming out but he said some time very soon definitely by the end of the week. Date Posted: 00:16:49 07/10/12 Tue I did a little boozing with Heaves on Friday evening. Saturday, I had the aforementioned digging in the heat at Hafer's. Although it was still balls hot, I decided to go to the National Symphony Orchestra's outdoor concert at Wolf Trap on Saturday evening. People were definitely melting and there were old people dropping like flies due to the heat, but I think that I was acclimated to it thanks to the afternoon in the sun. I had been on the fence about going, but I'm glad that I manned up and went because it was an awesome show. They played the music of John Williams, here was the playlist: - Olympic Fanfare (didn't realize that he wrote this) - Theme from Jaws - Theme from Jurassic Park - a ballad from Memoirs of a Geisha. It featured a cello performance (written for Yo Yo Ma for the movie). Very nice piece. - ET from when the bicycles fly - Theme from Close Encounters - Theme from Schindler's List featuring a violin performance. Definitely a sad piece of music. - Superman, which was awesome. I love the Superman music. - Theme of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics - I wasn't familiar with this piece, but it was really good - Hymn to the Fallen from Saving Private Ryan - Some Harry Potter stuff - Finished with a ton of Star Wars, which was amazing. I was a little disappointed not to hear the Indiana Jones theme, but otherwise it was a spectacular show. Wolf Trap is a really cool venue - not sure why I have never been before. You can bring in your own booze/food. I had a day inspired by Office Space on Sunday and remained in my air conditioned apartment all day doing absolutely nothing. |

Date Posted: 17:30:48 07/09/12 Mon My weekend, well, was pretty busy. Played golf up in CT with my Uncle on Saturday the morning after drinking a lot of beer and Sake and eating a crapload of sushi. Saturday night involved watching the UFC fights. Sonnen completely blew that fight. He trips and then stares at Silva like a moron; there's no reason for why he did it, and it was his piss-poor response time that resulted in his ass getting beat. Anyone that saw the fight knows Sonnen dominated the first round, and might have beat Silva, had he not made yet another fatal mistake, which you don't do in front of someone like Silva. I didn't want Sonnen to win anyway because he is a disrespectful scumbag (took PED's in the past and got kicked out, and also did time for tax evasion), so I was happy. I left Mark's at 1:30am; the last person to leave left at 3:30am; Brooke (Sister in Law) starts feeling pains at 3:45am and they start getting worse. Mark drives her to the hospital and her water breaks as they arrive. When they check her out not too long after, she was 10cm dilated (sp?). Essentially, they didn't have time for an epidural, so she gave birth naturally in less than 2 hours. Yowza. Long story short; I'm passed out by 2am after being up for almost 20 hours, and I wake up to a voicemail telling me that Hayden Reily Yudell is doing fine and is 6lbs. 14oz. We visited later in the day, and I must say that all of this shit is absolutely surreal. I can only imagine what it must be like for all of you dad's out there when you guys had your first. Besides the brief visit to see/meet Hayden; I did work all day Sunday and then picked Rena up from the Airport, who was away in KY during the weekend. In other news, I locked a good rate with Wells Fargo for refinancing. 3.875% with no points. Very happy about this. |

Although I really enjoyed it, I came away slightly disappointed and underwhelmed. - That being said, some really great scenes. - Nolan seemed to care a ton about making this a tied-together, neat little trilogy. With that being said, I recommend re-watching Batman Begins before seeing TDK Rises. |

Date Posted: 15:43:47 07/05/12 Thu has consisted of work outback. so i the side area is pretty much ready to go, the leveling may need to be touched up, but that's pretty minor. the part in the back by the sliding door is cut out, it just needs to be lowered a few inches. the pavers arrived just before noon and, since then, i've moved 600 of the 6"x6" and 630 of the 6"x9". that has not been fun (i had hoped they'd be able to place them in the back yard but the loader was too wide. only 690 6x9 to go!!! woo.... shoot me. tomorrow, i get 6 tons of sand/stone delivered. that will also need to be moved into the back yard. moving the pavers and sand/stone are pretty much the biggest part of what's left to do, actually. |

They difference between them and Citi, whom I currently have a mortgage with, was not that big (cost difference would be about $500 more with Citi, but I would get a 4.125% rate vs Quickens 4.25% rate - Not really that big of a difference) and I don't mind paying a little more so that I am dealing with a reputable firm that minimizes my hassle (in Case Quicken was not). |

Date Posted: 10:10:12 07/05/12 Thu Hey fellas! The trip home to PA was fantastic! It was great to see the family and hang out with a bunch of long lost high school friends at a free alcohol-fueled wedding. I got very, very drunk thanks in most part to Morgan's desire to do lots of shots. Ugh. I have not done a shot in quite some time. Blech. The other thing that did me in was the Yuengling. Mmmmm. As part of that trip, I flew home with William by my lonesome. He was awesome on the way out (even slept through all of 1 flight) but the 2-hour layover in Cleveland presented some problems. That was too much time too close to a nap for him to be 100% good. The flight back is where it got interesting. I found out a few hours before my PIT-CHI flight was supposed to leave that it was delayed, causing us to miss our CHI-KC flight. Spent 1 hour on the phone resolving nothing. Eventually got on a different flight (and completely different airline) but it put us home at 10pm, not 6pm like originally scheduled. After a day's full of travel nightmare stories (people puking next to me, not being allowed through security, standing in 5 different lines trying to get a ticket, etc.) the plane from ATL-KC was full of so many kind, wonderful, caring people that I have a new found faith in humanity. Yesterday's day off was fun and hot! Back to work for 2 very quiet days. Friday I get to go and see the Dark Knight Rises thanks to Amy's employer. They are screening it and have some extra tickets. This is the first one of these that I'll be able to attend b/c the generally do them during the day. |

Friday and Saturday involved moving; Saturday night involved a one-year anniversary dinner with Rena, followed by a pleasant phone call from my boss that I got a raise (in the words of Hafer - woot). I saw the new episode of Louie on Sunday; that show is simply awesome and season 3 looks to be as good already. Anger Management = Epic Fail. I give it two more episodes. We get off early tomorrow, so the plan is to see Ted. Super excited about it, as I have heard nothing but good things. On a side note, I cannot get "Someone That I Used to Know" out of my skull. Not sure how much was drank though. Need to circle back with my brother when he gets back from Costa Rica. My Mother-in-law is at the house until Wednesday. Date Posted: 10:31:21 07/02/12 Mon well that weekend blew goat tits. friday started out like all the rest. i put hanna to sleep and started to play faxandu on wii when caruso and oreo run downstairs yipping about tornados and other bad things. having experienced this before, i walk to my computer and, as i pull up the weather channel, our power goes out. at the very same time, the wind goes from 0 to 80 and rain/hail/lightning/thunder start at pretty insane levels. the power blinks back on in for a few seconds and i make my way quickly to the closet to grab our flashlight and caruso grabs hanna and starts to go downstairs. i grab my phone and oreo and follow close behind. only after we get into the basement can i look to see what's going on. the line of storms was pretty impressive. the front was that uber red color they use for only the most intense storms and, unlike the typical variety, it had some nice girth, probably a few miles wide. after 50 minutes or so, we made out way back up to the living room and, because all the power was out, we really couldn't see what had happened. caruso goes to bed, i feed hanna and follow shortly thereafter. at around 5, i get up and take a look around. our house was totally fine. ditto most of our neighbors. the nursing home across the street had a bunch of big branches fall into the road and the fence in front was shattered in several spots. this huge tree (the trunk is probably the size of a vw bug) down the street essentially exploded which was cool to see. other than that, things looked pretty normal. i went back to bed. around 7ish, i got back up and started our morning routine. caruso's uncle and gma were coming down to visit and arrived around 8. they brought a generator so we could charge our phones and run the refrigerator. we also did some early planning work for the patio. the good news is that there won't be nearly as much digging as the area slopes in such a way that i'll only have to skim the grass off large sections of yard and fill in some other sections. sure beats having to dig out 7 inches over 600 sq feet. around 2, caruso and i head to frederick for a (lame) family thing. the best part was the fact that the place we went had ac. around 8, we pack up and head back home, only to find out that pepco had begun claiming that power wouldn't be restored for a week. using their outage map, we saw that our estimated restoration date was july 6th. eff. by the time we got home it was 9ish, it was hot/muggy in the house, hanna was getting incredibly fussy and we were all tired and worn down from the whole ordeal. desperate to get out, we call one of caruso's friends and practically beg to spend the night. back in the car we go. the next morning (sunday) we're up and out around 10 to let odogg out. it had cooled down a bit in the house so we could actually plan out what we were going to do. we had to go to a big (350+ people) jewish wedding in bmore at 5 so we couldn't just bounce and go to my rents' place so we ended up packing our stuff up and heading to toker's house (nw of bmore). big gay frank agrees to come over and help babysit while caruso and i go to the wedding. on our way over, our neighbor calls and tells us that the power had come back on and that they had also heard that the wedding we're going to didn't have any power and that it was hot as balls (they're friends with the bride but couldn't go for some reason). it was hot as balls inside and i was shocked no one passed out, especially given how much the crazy joos dance around pre/post the wedding. we stayed for the meal and quickly bounced out, headed back to toker's place, picked up spawn, and drove back to o-town, arriving back around 10. all-in-all, we were pretty lucky i guess with the storms. we didn't have any damage, but had to throw away almost everything in our fridge. all my beer is skunked now too. gay. weekend fin |

Date Posted: 11:17:09 06/29/12 Fri I am back from the Netherlands. The trip overall was awesome, and I will post my pictures on Facebook when I can over the next few days. Of course, it took all of 5 minutes back in Newark international to see how much of an embarrasment we (Americans) are with regards to how we treat people, especially foreigners. After my brief visit in the Netherlands, I am 100% confident that we could learn a lot from our friends in the Netherlands. What an awesome country. There aren't a lot of fat people because almost everyone rides bikes and actually takes care of themselves instead of overeating processed shit all of the time (the women in Amsterdam we very impressive looking). Additionally, everyone seems to (at least overtly) be tolerant of one another; everyone seems to blend in well and get along. I took a brief tour of the Red Light district, and was slightly surprised by the shape of the girls there. They actually have good bodies and aren't bad looking at all, minus the whole whore thing and all. Definitely not bad to look at. The section where the Trannies were made me giggle, it was a fun place to walk by after consuming alcohol and legal cannibus. Overall, the country and the trip got an A+ in my opinion. On a side note, the upgrades I made to my seats to give me the 4" extra leg room and increased recline percentage were clutch; it made the 8-hour flight very tolerable. |

| Subject: DSL vs. Cable | |
|
Author: Jono [ Edit | View ] |
Date Posted: 11:00:24 06/27/12 Wed I assume that DSL = phone company and Cable = cable company, because that it what it is in the good ole USA. Because I work for a phone company, I would say we offer superior service. I've had 25Mb AT&T service ("DSL") for 4 years and it's been high quality. Being completely honest, here's some things you can check: - The fine print: if one says "up to" in their description of that service, while the other says they "guarantee" a certain speed (i.e. w/in a threshhold), the guarantee will likely have the backhaul traffic to support the speed they are offering you. The "up to" tactic is a tricky way to say they can get you 50Mb but you'll most likely experience speeds lower than that (although not dramatically lower). - Ask the customer service rep the following questions (1) How far away from I from the nearest service device? If you're under 5-6K feet, which I suspect you are judging by those speed offerings, you have a better chance of being OK. (2) What are the peak bandwidth rates/congestion rates for the device I am being served out of? In other words, if he/she says they average > 85% capacity during peak hours, there's a chance you could see some slow down. Even though the person sounds like a dummy, they should have this info available. That is all. |

I believe the quality of DSL is dependent on many more conditions (distance from hub, traffic on the lines, etc.) than cable. So that risk worries me a little. There are also 100 Mbps options for each DSL/Cable, but that seems to more than I need. |

Date Posted: 12:34:18 06/26/12 Tue Just happened: Was pooping in a small bathroom at work, but on a different floor. All one 1 wall, the bathroom has 2 urinals on the right and 2 stalls on the left. I was in the corner stall and no one else was in the bathroom. 3 minutes into the poop, someone comes in and heads to the urinal. After a few beats, I hear the following: Guy: Identify the enemy. (beat) (bear) Same Guy (lower octave): Kiiiiiiiiiillllllllllllll. A couple of more beats go by and the automatic flush goes off, indicating he has stepped away from the urinal. 10 seconds go by and I hear no footsteps and no water begins to run (indicating hand washing). 10 more seconds go by and I finally hear footsteps but only 1 or 2. Still nothing else. Finally, I hear the door to the bathroom open and he is gone. To be completely honest, (a) I had mentally prepared to fight this dude and (b) I was unreasonably nervous. Not much else as awesome as that going on in my world. Amy is very pregnant and it is very hot so we do a lot of sitting in air conditioning. If that is not going on, I am outside with William by myself chasing him around. Additionally, we have the nursery near complete and the bathroom demo has just begun (I have really cut this close - my bad). This Friday, I fly back to PA with William, leaving Amy at home. I am attending a wedding, while he is hanging with the grandparents. Assuming God has mercy on me, I will fly back with him on Monday. Hafer, how has your parenting adventures treated you? I am particularly fascinated in your dynamic because you had never planned on having kids. Can you believe how much you love that little thing? Is it like extra powerful because you never expected to have this experience at all? Hafer, I may be free to help you with some digging as well, but I'm not sure what I'm doing over the 4th yet. Also, Mr. Heaves will be around, so I'll want to see what he is up to. I've been doing a lot of reading recently: In history/non-fiction, I have read 1491 and its followup 1493. I really enjoyed 1491 and learned a lot about Pre-Columbian Native American societies. I felt that 1493 had some very interesting sections, but I don't think it was the most focused work and, thus, wasn't the most cohesive. I also read King Leopold's Ghost. I think that this book has a broader appeal. It's an amazing tale - good book. The only popular fiction that I recently read was A Visit From the Goon Squad. I normally don't like fiction works by female authors, but this book had great word of mouth and won the Pulitzer. With music playing a big part in the book, I thought I'd give it a try. I thought it was ok, but I wasn't blown away by it. I was enjoying it more, but I felt the last chapter was absolute garbage. |

Date Posted: 13:47:41 06/21/12 Thu so sniffy, chewie, and hank are coming into town tonight, followed by the rents tomorrow. chewie is presenting at some nih nerd conference so sniffy and hank are going to go around and do some things in dc until the rents arrive. they all leave on saturday so we have some time to ourselves on sunday. putting this out there, don't expect anything. i am putting in a swimming pool (not really, actually putting in a patio but the quote calls for a swimming pool). accordingly, i am going to have to excavate lots (600 sq ft) of soil. i am asking if anyone would want to come up and help me dig/move dirt or even help with the leveling/placing of pavers. caruso's uncle is going to be leading the charge as he's very familiar with doing this type of work but we could use some extra muscle for the initial work. our alternative is to go to home depot and hire a mexican for $50. i would gladly pay/bribe anyone who wants to help with food/beer/bjs. we would probably do the digging after the 4th of july 5-???. again, just putting this out there. |

Date Posted: 10:09:51 06/21/12 Thu Leading up to the Dream Team doc, Dan Patrick has Ewing, Robinson, The Mailman and Barkley on his podcast as seperate guests. Here's one of the stories that came up and was discussed with each of them. Supposedly Clyde Drexler came to practice one day with two left shoes, laced them up and was ready to play at which point Barkley noticed and basically made fun of him the rest of practice. Hearing basically the same story from them (except for gay Ewing who didn't want to discuss it) was pretty funny. Has everyone seen the doc yet? |

Date Posted: 08:34:18 06/20/12 Wed Vert, I saw Moonrise Kingdom a couple weekends ago - it was excellent. I have also recently seen Prometheus and Snow White (support Team Lukey). I liked Prometheus, but it wasn't quite as good as I had hoped. Snow White was pretty to look at, but the story was very predictable (not shocking). I'm hoping to see Safety Not Guaranteed this week - it has received about the same reviews as Moonrise Kingdom. I enjoyed this season of Mad Men. I absolutely loved the last shot of the season; it looks like Don is going to be back next season. I'm also glad that Lane is off the show. James Harden stinks. It sickens me that the Heat are going to win the title. |

Date Posted: 08:27:25 06/19/12 Tue Not much to report that will thrill you. I've been taking German lessons 1.5 hours a week for the last 3 weeks. I know very little German. I am going to wait until I get back in August to kick up the intensity. Right now I have my eyes on the move...getting things ready on both sides of the pond. This past weekend I went to a bunch of furniture and discount stores to do some recon -- to figure out what would be best to buy in the States (nearly everything) and what to buy here (almost nothing). Actually, IKEA DE's prices are fairly similar to IKEA USA but slightly more expensive due to the currency conversion. I could save about $15 per $100 in the US. I bought a new washer and dryer at a bargain sale for ... well a bargain. Kate bought a couch (sectional) from Bob's discount furniture on Sunday which I'm excited about. We ended up spending a bit more on that than I was planning, but we intend to go on the cheaper side for a new coffee table and TV stand (IKEA). Also, they don't have closets here. So everyone buys wardrobes. What a silly expense!! Kate needs to buy a bike yet in the US too. |

Date Posted: 17:51:44 06/18/12 Mon Wednesday Jefe arrives and we head to Target Field around 530 for the Twins v. Phils. The stadium is built right downtown and it’s across the street from the Target Center. The pre-game bar atmosphere is pretty solid in the surrounding areas. Our seats were higher up along the third base line and had an amazing view of the skyline. Side note: (Twins fans are still pro-Thome. They cheered for him each time he was announced and even when he crushed a 467 ft. hr to dead center.) After the game we went over to a strip club called Seville that was literally across the street from the stadium. When I say literally, we are drinking $9 strip club beers within 5 minutes of Papelbon recording the final out in a 9-8 Phils victory. We chat with a few of the girls and notice that 75% of the girls have a) drop dead gorgeous faces b) sick bodies c) appropriately sized fake cans. Once girl who seemed to have everyone’s attention would kill in Vegas. (Vic, she was Becky and Bailey caliber). We each get a few dances and (MN has a strict no touching policy) after 4-5 beers we decide to call it a night. (For a quick laugh, type in “strip clubs in Minneapolis” while in Google Maps. The map lights up like a Christmas tree.) Thursday Wake up early to some questionable weather that we spent half the day dodging and only get 9 holes of golf in. The courses in Minnesota are very nice because none of them get a ton of play. It baffles me how many courses there are surrounding the Twin Cities. After golf we head up to the Mall of America to kill a few hours before the game that night. We head back for Game #2 and have front row seats along 1B/RF. The view is pretty sick and we see a solid outing by Blanton and another Phils win. After the game we head back to Mankato (town I live in) which is 75 minutes south of the cities. Friday Wake up for another round of golf later that evening we head out in downtown Mankato. The town is home to MSU (Minnesota State) and the downtown bars are largely supported by the college. We bounce around to a couple of bars and none are overly crowded (still mostly college students) until we get to the last one (South Street). We walk in around 12 and it’s PACKED with college kids. The first song we hear is LFO’s Summergirls followed by Ma$e “Feels So Good” and some other random late 90’s/early 00’s bar/frat songs. The kiddies’ belt out the lyrics like 2001 VertRamp did when “Pour Some Sugar On Me” or “Livin on a Prayer” came on. Being the strip club fanboy that he is, Jefe thinks we should check out the local joint that I’ve heard about but have never been to. We head over there around 1230 and pay our $2 cover (LOL 2 dollars!). Beers are $4 and dances are $10 (I LOVE IT, BEST DEAL EVER!). There are about 8-10 different girls working and it’s kinda something-for-everyone roster. Jefe gets a few dances and has a few others queued up until we realize that the guys they’re with have slapped down hundos (10 dances FTW!) and will be getting dances for the better part of the next hour. It seemed like the rules are a little more lax once the money get flowing, but the dances are just out in the open. Also, in a strip club history first, one of the girls wore a hooded zip front sweatshirt when she came off stage and made her way around the room. Apparently she gets cold really easily and doesn’t work up a sweat swing from the rafters for 2-3 songs. She even started a lappie with sweatshirt still on! |

I'm getting an E74 error which means hardware failure. I'm still figuring out how to address this. I can get the unit repaired for $99 which seems to be the cheapest route. Otherwise I can look into getting a new unit. problem with that is that I would need to get a new hard drive and then the transfer cable. I'd be looking at about $300 this way. |

Date Posted: 07:56:17 06/12/12 Tue As expected, Savor was delightful. Has anyone tried the Terra Incognita yet? Vic and I had a fun train ride home. A really drunk girl (I would guess she was about our age) came up to talk to us while waiting on at the station. She was wearing beads and a glow necklace. She wasn't bad looking - her face wasn't great, but she was skinny/in good shape (she worked at Victoria's Secret, but she had small boobs). Our conversation continued onto the train where, to Vic's amusement, I poked, prodded, and pinched her all while making ludicrous comments as she sat next to me. Not sure if Vic continued the conversation after I got off the train. As evidenced by the zombie cases, smoking bath salts must be fucking crazy. My Mom works in the DA's office and she shared another wacko bath salt story. Apparently, this guy smoked his bath salts and proceeded demolish his car in a single car accident. He was found by the police running down the road. He had stripped naked and shoved an electrical plug up his butt (the cord was hanging out of his ass while running). He said that he was going to a birthday party so he was going in his birthday suit. |

Date Posted: 11:07:23 06/11/12 Mon hi. we survived the weekend. savor was very good. there were fewer breweries and seemingly fewer tickets sold (it was sold out but less people attended) so it wasn't nearly as cramped as in years past. we tried some very good beers (surly brewery was my favorite - their coffee and smoke beers were tasty). dogfish underwhelmed, but they haven't really come out with anything "amazing" for a while now so no big surprise i guess. the typical big names were solid. the food was tasty, especially the duck tacos and lamb meatballs (one of which was slapped against vic's hairless face). after, we walked to a bar to watch the end of the nba game/boxing match. on the way, we were attacked by 2 angry asian women who thought we were mocking asians by dropping our l's and replacing them with r's. in actuality, it was vic who was talking like this and he quickly talked the crazies away. THAT was fun. sirry women. i bounced out before the fight began (mostly because they insisted on delaying the fight time for seemingly no reason). the ride back was fine but the red line was single tracking... as always, so my arrival time how was delayed by about an hour. that made getting up early to feed spawn lots-o-fun. |

When we move to our apartment, the bike ride should shorten 1-2 more minutes, and the train route will increase another 5 due to more walking. I plan to make biking the norm on nice days. I have no idea how/if I'll manage in the winter time but many people do. I got the following email from someone in my VA neighborhood. I especially love the part about the prostitution that allegedly occurs about 200 yards from my house. If I had only known... Hello everyone, Yesterday morning, Ryan McCarty was able to get a picture of one person who has been throwing glass bottles over the retaining wall and hitting our property. Turns out it was an 11 year old boy who routinely hurled bottles our way on his way to the school bus in the morning and also when he got off the bus in the afternoons. It was his daily routine. I got in contact with my friends at ACPD and we had an officer hidden, waiting for the bus to drop off. Like clockwork, the kid got off the bus, grabbed a wine bottle and hucked it at my house (seems fair since I was the one who set up the sting....ha!) The police caught him, cuffed him and drove him to his mothers place of employment. He was very upset and apologetic. The same officer met him at the bus today after school and he cleaned up all the litter and bottles above the retaining wall and below the wall on our property. He will also be writing a letter of apology to the homeowners. ACPD is going to set up a detail above the retaining wall for the next several weeks to see if they can get a handle on the late night loitering and other possible prostitution and drug dealing. Hopefully we will see a reduction in the number of bottles coming our way. |

The IPad app that you want to get is "It's Playing" - This app will allow you to view videos that are pretty much any format (avi, mpg, mkv, etc) without having to convert it to an .mp4 file. On a side note, if you guys ever want to convert a song on youtube to mp3, try out http://www.makeitmp3.com/. Again, can't guarantee that it is virus free, but it has worked for me before... |

Date Posted: 12:43:52 06/05/12 Tue 1. KeepVid. This is likely the fastest way to grab just about any video from the Web. YouTube, DailyMotion, Megavideo, Metacafe, and Vimeo are just a few of the sites compatible with KeepVid. Copy the URL of the video you want to download, head to KeepVid.com, and paste it in the bar at the top. Then click "Download" to the right of that bar. Do not click the large green "Download" button. It will load for a few seconds, then you'll have the option to download the video in FLV (Flash), MP4, or WebM format. If you don't know which one to pick, go with MP4, as it has the greatest compatibility. 2. NetVideoHunter (Firefox). This Firefox browser add-on also works with many popular video sites, including Facebook. Once you install the extension from the add-on site, a button will be added to your toolbar. To use it, head to a page with embedded video. You'll notice that the NetVideoHunter button will flash, alerting you that video on the page can be downloaded. Click the button, and click Download next to the video you want to save. Unfortunately, I haven't discovered any reliable Chrome extensions similar to NetVideoHunter. 3. Desktop software. As a third and final option, you may download a program for your Mac or Windows computer dedicated to downloading Web video. For Mac, check out MacTubes. Windows users can try Free YouTube Downloader. Both programs have gotten solid reviews and work as advertised. He's got a handful of Barney/Elmo/etc. videos on YouTube that keep him occupied for as long as they are playing. On the plane, those will be inaccessible so I was hoping to snag them from YT, convert them, and then load up the iPad/iPhone. Date Posted: 11:03:03 06/05/12 Tue Hafer, we use the PA one. I can deduct it from my PA income taxes for a couple bucks a year. It is currently pegged against state tuition inflation since I'm assuming (correctly so far) that state institutions are getting less and less gov't funding and are thus raising tuition the most. |

Date Posted: 10:33:25 06/05/12 Tue i've been checking out md's 529 page and they offer a prepaid college trust plan. you pay today's rates for in-state tuition and, once your kid gets of age, the state pays the then current tuition rate based on colleges in-state. if the spawn goes to psu (which she will) md pays the average in-state rate (so you pay the difference vs paying the total amount - aka it lessens the pain per year). this sounds like a pretty epic plan to me and pretty much means i would pay a few hundo a month for 18 years and, assuming college tuitions continue to rise, save money on the back end. |

Date Posted: 09:57:53 06/05/12 Tue We researched a decent amount and did one that is operated by the state of KS. It can be used anywhere in the country but it had better expense ratios and portfolio options than some of the larger institutional firms. Money comes out via DD the 1st of every month. To be honest, most of them are the same for the most part. Chances are you won't find too many differences from plan to plan so like I said above, we picked one w/ an easy online interface that offered the lowest expense ratios. |

Date Posted: 09:55:57 06/02/12 Sat Last night I enjoyed a good, american style burger at a burger joint near my hotel. Then we went to a place that served beer from a to-go like window. The window was in a small back room of a restaurant. More like a waiting area...because that's exactly what it used to be. Back in the day, the richy rich would go tot he restaurant and their chauffeurs would park and then hang out in this tiny room. The room has a bell which you do not dare to ring. If you do, you are buying everyone in that room a drink! I went there with one of my coworkers. He was there a few weeks ago with the other american coworker and the locals tricked them into ringing the bell. They ended up running away because they didn't want to buy beers for everyone. Whoops! While we were in this room, 14 blokes from the UK stormed in. We got to talking and they decided to make us part of their merry crew. One of them was dressed in a ridiculous attire (faux lederhosen) and was the captain of this ragtag group. He was the bachelor. We made our way over to the Hofbrauhaus and consumed a couple liters of beer. It was solid fun all the way around. This morning I learned that I still do get incredibly hungover off of German beer. Dang! |

Date Posted: 09:35:04 06/02/12 Sat Long story short...yep, tornadoes exist here in Germany. But I'm not scurred. The United States has the most tornadoes of any country, seeing about four times the activity estimated in all of Europe. Many of these form in an area of the central United States known as Tornado Alley.[2] This area extends into Canada, particularly Ontario and the Prairie Provinces; however, activity in Canada is less than that of the US. The Netherlands has the highest average number of tornadoes per square mile in the world (at least 20 recorded per year). The UK also has a very high tornado density (more than 33 tornadoes reported annually), but most are small and result in minor damage. Bangladesh and surrounding areas of eastern India suffer from tornadoes of lesser severity to those in the US with more regularity than any other region in the world. However, these occur with greater recurrence interval, and tend to be under-reported due to the scarcity of media coverage in a third-world country. The annual human death toll from tornadoes in Bangladesh is about 179 deaths per year, which is much greater than in the US. This is likely due to the density of population, poor quality of construction, lack of tornado safety knowledge, and other factors.[6] Other areas of the world that have frequent strong tornadoes include parts of Argentina and southern Brazil, as well as South Africa. A fair number of weak and occasionally strong tornadoes occur annually in Germany, Italy, Spain, China and the Philippines. Australia, France, Russia, areas of the Middle East, India, Bangladesh and Japan have a history of multiple damaging tornado events. |

Date Posted: 16:57:02 06/01/12 Fri They say you should watch the news (b/c it will be on every channel if there is one nearby or if there is a chance for one nearby) and also have a weather radio so you can hear what's up when you're down in your basement in a safe place. All I know is that if there is a possibility of one nearby, there is a very loud siren. Each municipality has one and you can hear it from everywhere w/in that municipality. We've been woken up once with one and immediately snatched up William and went to the basement. The other one was in the middle of one of his baths and we did the same thing- grab a bunch of shit and head to the basement. After that, it's just watching TV until (a) it possibly gets closer and then you hide and cover in a safe place or (b) wait for the warning to lift. From what I've heard, if it's close, the sound you hear will make you think it's a train. |
