just wanted to let everyone know that my mom has to have a full hysterectomy tomorrow. why? well, strap in...

a few weeks back, my mom was driving back from a trip with some lady friends when she started to feel pains in her side. they got worse and my dad took her to the hospital where she was admitted for having 2 blood clots in her lungs. after a few days, they thought they had treated the problem and sent her on her way.

my parents flew out to michigan to meet us and stayed for a few days after we left to do some sightseeing/touring around. the day after we left, my mom's leg swelled up again and she was admitted to the hospital. again. they did more tests/scans and discovered an orange-sized growth in her uterus. the doctor said these types of growths are usually benign but they can't be certain.

she was discharged a day or so later and met with her doctor in lewisburg. he sent her to an obgyn who did some more tests, one of which came back a bit high (a marker test that is used to show likelihood of cancer) while others were fine. while this is going on, my aunt, who is a big shot at geisinger (the big hospital/health plan in central pa), pulled some strings and got my mom in for a meeting yesterday with the head of their obgyn/oncology department. he admitted her after doing some tests. the good news is that, after his physical inspection, he said my mom isn't presenting the symptoms that he normally sees in patients with ovarian cancer or cancer in general. that said, he can't be sure until they get the growth out and run a biopsy.

so, today my mom has to get a colonoscopy to see if things look alright around there and then tomorrow she has her full procedure. essentially, they open her up, remove the growth, test it, if it comes back fine, they close her up and that's it, if it comes back positive, they keep looking and remove as much of what they find as possible and then she starts chemo as soon as possible.

so that's where we are. my mom is doing surprisingly well, she's eager to get the procedure over with and behind her. my dad is the same.

i'll keep everyone posted when i hear what's going on. don't make this a big deal, i just wanted to share so everyone knew.
