Subject: Proposal

My plan was to have Rena pick the exact ring she wanted. Knowing her, picking the ring for her and then proposing to her in a traditional sense would have been nothing short of disastrous. I took a look at a few jewelers and the one I chose in NYC impressed me the most with regards to overall quality of product and what I would be getting for the money I paid. I actually already spoke with the Jeweler and planned the visit in advance, so that Rena would see a slew of appropriate choices (no sense in her seeing things beyond my price range) and then pick the final ring she wanted. It should also be noted that they do not offer rings off of the shelf. The diamonds are selected and cut by them, and the rings are made to order. Funny enough, it was where my parents actually got their wedding rings (the place has been around for almost 100 years).

A side story that was a part of the proposal: Rena and I were watching Weeds and there was a scene where the main characters were changing their identities. Rena then asked me if I could change my name to anything, what would I change it to. This lead to some fun conversation.

Back to NYC - Rena was thinking that we were just going to lunch and then spending the weekend in the city. As we were close to the Jeweler, I mentioned the conversation about changing identities that we had the night before during that episode of Weeds. I then asked her how "Rena Yudell" sounded, and thinking nothing really of it, responded to me with "That sounds really nice". I then proceeded to walk her into the Jewelry store and she asked me what we were doing there. I told her that we were browsing for one more thing (we had been shopping that morning for other things), and if she said yes to the next question, then we would be buying something as well. Rena still had no clue. As I approached the Jeweler, she said "Hello Evan, how are you." Rena, at this point, was still shocked and not sure what was going on. I proceeded to tell the Jewler that we were there to look at Engagement rings. At this point, Rena gave me that wide-eyed shocked look, the question I was referring to before, is "Will you marry me?" She started to cry and said "yes". In fact, she asked me to ask her multiple times that day, because of how it made her feel. She got the ring she wanted, and was expecting it to be done and ready by the second week of January. Surprise: It's already done and she'll be getting it on Christmas Eve. Double Surprise.
