The only alternative is buying huge pieces of furniture, akin to wardrobes I guess, that you use as a closet. We bought one for Kate at Ikea. We still need one for me an for coats. Huge waste of money and effort.

Typically, apartments don't come with kitchens either (appliances, sinks, counter tops and cabinets). Tenants will buy them, install them and take them with the to the next place, or try to sell them to the next tenant or throw them away. Luckily, being in a new apartment the builder decided to include the kitchens, which is a growing trend.

It all seems crazy to me and fairly ass-backwards.
