Subject: Strike Duty

when my company acquired Qwest Communications, it picked up a 13K-employee union consisting of a lot of the customer-facing job disciplines that you'd encounter with a telecom company (customer service reps, technicians who come to your house to install/fix service, etc.). Well, the union contract for those 13K employees is set to expire on 10/6/12. If they strike, which it is looking more and more like they will, other non-represented employees of the company are supposed to fill in for them so customers only see minimal impact. In other words, I have been assigned to strike duty.

Should this union strike on 10/6/12, I am required to report to West Des Moines, IA and work 12-hour days for 6 days a week until the strike is resolved! I am unclear of what my job will be, but from what I can currently glean, I will be one of those technicians who goes to people's houses to fix/install things! I couldn't be less qualified!

I knew this was a possibility (almost inevitable considering how huge this union is and how much help will be required to reduce the impact to customers) but now that it is becoming more of a reality, Amy & I could not be more pissed. I really, really hope they resolve this dispute and sign a fucking contract before 10/6.
