Subject: Really not an option at Bougainville
In reply to: 's message, "BOUGAINVILLE" on 09:28:40 02/27/00 Sun

For Bougainville to survive as an independant nation would be a long shot at best. One of the biggest problems with with PNG now is the fact that it is not a big nation in land mass and there are so many different cultures and languages that it can not get organized either politically or financially. I know that the people of Bougainville are real pissed at Port Moresby and I can't blame them. Moresby takes all the money from the resources there and gives back nothing. That is the flaw in the PNG constitution as I see it. This is the area where negotiations have to be pushed.

A good example of what I would expect if Bougainville became independant is Haiti. Sometime when you are bored go to the National Geographics site and see if you can find the picture that was taken by statelite about 5 years ago. On one side of this island is the Dominican Republic, the Eastern half is Haiti. This was a country that was so small it should never have been independant of anyone. After independence they had only one choice to try to survive. They logged off all of their timber and sold off any other resources they had. Today aerial photos show the border between these two country as clearly as if someone had drawn a pencil line on them. The Dominican republic is lush and green and Haiti is a barren waste land of pure poverty. This will be the future of Bougainville, and for that matter PNG as a whole if all of the islands don't join forces and work together. AND SOON!!!! This is one more case of differnt tribes of PNG not uniting for a common cause.

I would like to add one other thing here at this time. In several postings in the past month people have talked about how the US and others allowed Indoneasia to take the western half of New Guinea Island. I can understand that but.....So what? what good would this area be to PNG at this time? It seems the government is having a hard time just keeping what they have now together. Just my thought.......
