Subject: FINAL GUARDMOUNT FOR STEVE RAY, FOUNDING MEMBER AND PAST VSPA BOARD MEMBER

STEVEN F. RAY, VSPA Life Member #304, Cam Ranh Bay, RVN and Korat RTAFB, Thailand 1972-73. FINAL GUARDMOUNT Friday, January 24, 2020. Steve was a Charter and Founding Member of the VSPA. He served as Secretary/Treasurer for several years and then as Secretary for two additional years. He wrote stories for on our award winning web site. He conducted extensive research with the Air Force in an effort to identify awards and decorations received by Air Policemen, Security Policemen and Augmentees who served in Vietnam and Thailand. His work provided the foundation for all VSPA records for Awards and Decorations, including those listed on the web site at VSPA.com Steve was a traveling member of the Lockheed-Martin Audit Team. He suffered a massive heart attack when his plane landed at Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport on Friday.

The following information was submitted by Steve when he participated in the VSPA History Book Project: "Born February 1952 in Gadsden, AL and entered the USAF in April 1971. He attended basic training at Lackland AFB, TX June-December 1971, assigned 4392nd SPS, Vandenburg AFB, CA (SAC). Duties were Resources Protection (125-37). Attended AZR September 1971 Lackland AFB/Camp Bullis, TX. Arrived Cam Ranh Bay AB, Vietnam (PACAF, 7th AF, 483rd SPS) Jan. 4, 1972. Upon closing of Cam Ranh Bay in May 1972, he was reassigned to Korat AB, Thailand (388th SPS). In February 1973 he was assigned to (ATC) 29th SP Division, Craig AFB, AL. Assigned to Kunsan AB, Korea (PACAF, 3rd/8th SPS) April 1974-January 1976. Duties were SPI majority of tour. Best assignment was town patrol at Korat. Discharged with the rank of staff sergeant in January 1976 at Travis AFB, CA. Married to the former Kang, Song C. and they have two beautiful daughters. He is currently employed by Lockheed Martin as an occupational safety analyst."

ON-LINE OBITUARY: Steven Francis Ray, 67, passed away Friday. He was born in Gadsden and moved to Huntsville in March 1952. He graduated from Butler High School. Mr. Ray served in the US Air Force and the Alabama Army National Guard as a Law Enforcement Specialist. He was decorated for his service as a disabled Vietnam War veteran. After graduation from Athens State University, he continued his passion for law enforcement by joining the Madison County Sheriff's Department as a Deputy. He later worked as an auditor with Lockheed Martin for almost 30 years. Mr. Ray loved the Lord and his family and was a Deacon at Whitesburg Baptist Church. He served in and held various offices in church, civic and veteran groups and enjoyed hunting, fishing and Alabama Football. Mr. Ray was preceded in death by his son, Steven Francis Ray, Jr. and his brother, Julius, "Jukie" Ray. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Song C. Ray; daughters Stephanie Ray Johnson (Christopher) and Abigail E. Ray; brother, Kelly Joe Ray (Beverly); sister, Elizabeth Whortan (Jerry); step-sisters, Patty Ricketts, Katy Gracy, and Toni Payne; and step-brother, Houston Smith. Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 28, 2020 from 12:30 pm–1:30 pm at Whitesburg Baptist Church, South Campus, followed by a Celebration of Life at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Whitesburg Baptist Church Missions in memory of Mr. Ray. (www.laughlinservice.com)
