After our last minor hurricane, here in Charleston, I decided to buy a "whole home" generator. After doing my research and getting HOA approval, I decided on a 22kw unit, with automatic start and switchover and runs on natural gas. It is hard to get gas here, after a storm. The gas pumps have to have power also.
Anyway, I ordered and paid Lowe's for the generator, on 18 October. It was finally delivered 3 weeks ago. It has set there for 3 weeks, waiting for Lowe's sub-contractor to hook up the gas line. After that, I will have to wait for the Code Enforcement Inspector to inspect and certify it to be OK. THEN, the prime installer contractor will do the install of the switching stuff and test the unit. That will take another 2-3 weeks.
The moral to this story is not to go through Lowe's for any project that requires contract oversight. You are at the mercy of the contractor and sub-contractor. You can't cancel the contract because that must be done within 3 days of purchase. You also can't sue them. All disputes must go to an Arbitrator. Nobody reads the fine print on the back of these contracts but you should. Almost all of them are heavily in favor of the Vendor.
By the time I have this generator up an running it will have been over 5 months, since I paid Lowe's almost $9,000 bucks. I hope we don't have a hurricane before I finally get it running. :-(
