Prodigal Grandpa

a soliloquy

I used to go to church on Christmas and Easters,
and when I had to, weddings and funerals.
At church I made quite a show when they passed
the plate, waving a roll of dough and dropping in
another twenty, playing the role so well.
But now they have those QR Codes to scan, and
no one knows if I push the button.

Once, after church, I went to lunch with a group
(they had gift-cards) and we sat in one of those big
half-circle tables. I was horseshoed in the middle
—it turned into a bible study about the end of the
world—Revelation— I was trapped: We were all going
to hell in a big atomic bomb cloud with Jesus and a bunch
of angels in chariots and helicopters whether we liked it
or not (I looked it up online), or something like that,
scared the crap out of me, and I almost got religion for real.
I went to the facilities (skipping dessert), called a Hovr,
snuck out, and got the heck out of there.

Now I go to a different church on Christmas and Easters.
And they never mention Revelation either. I can live with that.
Mostly it’s about saving a tree or whale (I clicked the QR), or
how bad that other political guy is, and some feel-good stuff.
But I don’t have to shake hands with the guy behind me either.
Plus, I’m not going out to lunch with anyone.

I’ve made it this far by playing the religious-game, and with all
the money I’ve kicked in, if there is a God, I should make it, but
I’ve made up my mind— and announced I’m a nonbeliever
loud and clear!
Those who thought me pious think that’s a shame.
So what! I still go to church on Christmas and Easter.

Prodigal Grandpa,
I’m a nonbeliever,
RIP
