Subject: TAXI! Take me to the SNY review!
In reply to: Jack Farrell 's message, "Jack Farrell's Super Awesome SNY Sketch Review: The Queen's Edition" on 22:24:15 10/11/04 Mon

Once again I try to title my review heading based on something relating to the host in the hopes that it will be humorous, and once again I fail. Regardless, here come my reviews.

Vice-Presidential Debate: This was neat. Both our show and the actual show had a PRes. and V.P. debate sketch, but they used the presidential bit as their opener, and we used the vice-prez. one. Rather interesting. On the topic of the sketch itself, I found this characterization of Gwen Ifill to be similar to the actual parody, though a little more urban and not possessing the dry wit of the SNL Ifill spoof. I was pleased to see that Cheney and Edwards actually did get at it with each other, but the dialogue was lukewarm. Quite a few good points (the aunt-coworker-midwife, ect., Jimmy Quest-Newburt) but some low points also, (shut up, Damn, who's the bitch now), they kind of dragged it down, overall it was okay. Nice job on exaggerating Edwards' gaffes from the acutal debate, Hillary. Wow, I can't believe Cheney has a gay daughter.

Monologue: I guess this sketch was inspired by "Boom Boomer" from Janet Jackson's show, and I'm pleased to see that Jen turned this into a masterpiece far better than the Boom Boomer debacle could ever be. ONce again, though, this is a bit I'd love to see actually performed rather than just read, it's a pinnacle of absurdity. The overuse of "kip kop klupple ect." was a little dragged out, but became better when it was treated as actual dialogue. Then Latifah tries to cheer them up by showing the good sides to Finnese's death, that was great. I enjoyed the homage to "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"
at the end.

Run!: So-so. The premise was interesting, but there weren't too many funny lines. Also, the "Who wants to Eat a Rat" has been done before, I believe, on other programs. Sorry Jack, hope you're not mad.

Amazing Archaeological Discoveries: I loved this, plain and simple. It had all the key elements of comedy: rule of three, plays on the ignorance of the masses, doesn't let the audience in on the big joke until the end, clever lines; a great piece overall.

Senate Ads I-III: A good trilogy. It reminds me of a commercial parody from the 93-94 season where Farley and Schneider were construction workers talking about highly complex machinery parts. The politician's made-up words and refusal to actually admit to what good they've done were killer. This was a superbluously cromulent installment.

Second Presidential Debate: Eh, I can't really say that this was as good as the first. The characterizations and dialogue were pretty much the same, and it just didn't appeal to me that much. Again, I didn't find the Bush as a childish simpleton amusing, but hey, that's just my own personal taste; I can't parody Bush or Kerry to save my life. There were some good points to it, however; Gibson's mother wanting to do Nader, Bush's wondering where the podium is (BTW, they suspect that it was KERRY who had notes at the debate to help him, not Bush), and Bush's book promotion were what I enjoyed most. One question if I may ask, though; why did Nader make the Hitler comment?

Cash Only: I liked the premise, had a little problem with some of Barry's dialogue. At times it came off as a little too haughty and superior (Heavens, no?), but overall it was a good bit. The opening jokes were clever and succinct, as well as the conflict between the diners and the waitress and their attempts to leave with their dignity. Another question, if I may ask, why would Jennifer forget her PIN? The pirate at the end seemed a little rushed, out of place and cliche, but didn't diminish the quality of the sketch too badly.

On a side note pertaining to this sketch, I've noticed that once again Tony Danza was referenced. This could be a prominent running gag. Therefore, throughout the rest of the season I will strive to, and urge all other contributors, to insert at least one Tony Danza reference in each update. Can we pull it off?

A Flash Forward: Good use of meta-humor in the beginning, and props to Prateek for asking the question on all our minds - where were the black guys last week? Bringing Ben into the picture again was a nice reference at self-parody, but I'm sorry to say that the scene set in the future didn't pack the same punch that the opening and end of the sketch did. I did like Rusty Beats and learning that Ben Affleck will eat a penis ten years down the road, thanks for letting us know what the future holds Prateek. I've gotta get to work on writing sketches for Michael Ian Black and prepare memorial tributes for Lorne and Chris Kattan.
