Jeff Garcia: Can he take us to the Super Bowl? Not with the current talent. He needs to be surrounded by better receivers. He isn't a Steve McNair caliber quarterback who can make Drew Bennett look like a super star. However, surround Garcia with Owens and a "Rice-like" receiver and we have seen what he can do.

Anyone who thinks Garcia and the offense are capable of playing week in and week out like they did in the final 20 minutes of the Giants game is fooling themselves. That was an abberation. When they went to it yesterday, most of you didn't even recognize it. That is how ugly Garcia Ball was against the Buccaneers.

Mariucci: Force him to dump Greg Knapp and Bruce DeHaven. Never release him from his contract unless someone is willing to give up a first and two seconds for him. That means start negotiating an extension.

Pass Defense: Donahue needs to find a corner that is better than Webster and Rumph. I think Marcus Trufant is. I like him at the end of the first round.

Defensive line: Carter, Young and Shaw are the only guys who are guaranteed a locker next year. I would look at moving Young out to LDE to increase his impact, reduce the wear and tear on his body and extend his career.

Offensive line: Sign a free agent or two for the left side. Eric Heitmann isn't the answer.

I know the defense needs to be improved. Either this team shuts down the Rams, Eagles and Bucs in 2003, or we need to outscore them. But, this offense which scored 3 or more TD's per game 12 times in 2001, only did it 6 times this year. Mariucci/Garcia's offense scored 17 or less 7 times this season (before yesterday)...and they only did it three times in 2001. The offense has been throttled!

So, as much as Donahue needs to find the talent to rush the passer and defend the pass, he also needs to infuse the offense with some talent. It has been neglected for FOUR YEARS! That is ridiculous. Even when Walsh was rebuilding the defense with the 1981 draft, he still invested in the offense. In fact, you can say he did that first (drafting James Owens, Joe Montana, Dwight Clark in '79; Earl Cooper in the first round in '80, and Bubba Paris, plus acouple RBs in 1982). To only have Kevan Barlow on offense to show for four years of drafts is reckless.
