First I have to say WOW,what a finish!!! I am so glad that I left my vcr running when I left for work yesterday in the 3rd quarter. Something inside wouldn't let me give up and even though my mind told me to turn it off when I was going out the door my heart said no,there is still a chance. So now I have that tape that I am sure I will be wearing out over the next week and probably for years to come!I was on the road in the middle of my commute as I listened to the last quarter and a half. Needless to say I almost drove off the road numerous times until near the end I think the guy in front of me thought I was going to ram him from behind!!!
I was kind of in a daze listening to the game and it was as if I wasn't really driving but as if I was driving in a dream state and the only thing in the world that had my attention was the game.I guess I am lucky that I got to work safely! About the last 20 minutes of my drive(after the game was over)I was a proud 49er fan with my 49ers hats prominantly displayed in my back window for all to see and from time to time another 9er fan or a whole carload of 9er fans would see the 49er logo's in my window and start honking their horns in pure joy!And when I got to work a number of Raider fans had rather sad looks on their faces ,1st of all because the hated Niners who defeated them earlier in the year were again victorious in one of the truly great playoff games of all time and secondly because I reminded them that the Jets are coming to Oakland next week rather than the pushover Browns and they know they now have a hard road to the SB that must go through the Jets and probably the Titans(if they are lucky enough to get past the Jets). A pretty great day for a Niner fan!!!

Now for Plummer. Many people have posted remarks about Plummer having a terrible game and have remarked that he isn't that good of a corner but if what I heard on the radio broadcast is true then he had a pretty decent game under the circumstances. They said that if this would have been a regular season game that Plummer would probably have not even suited up. He has a fairly bad groin strain and is having trouble changing direction which for a corner is a devastating injury. They said that the only reason he was in there toughing it out was because with Webster already out the Niners just didn't have anyone to take his place. If you noticed he usually had pretty good posistion but in the critical moments he just couldn't make that sudden change of direction to stay with the receiver. I don't know if they have been hiding this injury for the last few weeks or if it just happened in the last week but I hope it isn't bad enough to linger on and make him ineffective for next weeks game. And I hope Webster is back at 100 % for next week(especially if Plummer is still hampered).I think he is a very very good cornerback and if we can get another corner of his caliber next year in the draft or free agency we should be set at that posistion for years. GO NINERS!!! PS Mooch, you know you really don't have to wait until we get behind to unleash the dogs. Let the dogs hunt and you might find that they will bring you back some big game to put on the table(a SB trophy!!!)But if you tie a rope around their necks and tie them to a tree and only allow them a limited area to roam in then the odds of them being able to have a successful hunt are very poor.Don't hold the dogs back, let them loose and watch them go for the throat!!! The lead was unassailable.

And it wasn't a question of flukes...or poor calls...or the wierd bounces of the ball.

We're talking clean, unadulterated, physical domination.

And then in the fourth quarter, one team folded it's tents...and the other nutted up...played hard...played with a mixture of poise and passion.

And assailed the hell out of the unassailable.

I think some small props have to go to the St. Louis Rams for showing the Niners just what can happen if you don't quit.

And as annoyed as I've been with him over the last couple of years...my Offensive MVP...heck, my Game MVP has to go to that Sharpie using, Pom-Pom waving, Dancing Drum Major of a Wide Receiver...Terrell Owens!!!!

I don't think I've ever seen a Wide Receiver take a team on his shoulders and carry them to a win before...and I've watched every game Jerry Rice ever played as a Niner.

He made the half time speech.

He rallied the offensive players on the sidelines and told them to keep the faith.

And he caught the short passes, and ran through the tackles that produced the TDs. Jeez, he even got to throw that 25 yard pass. (It was a play they'd tried before...but this time it worked!)

And major props to the offensive line...and their back-ups. Did the Giants even have a defensive line on the field in the second half?

Re: the defensive shift in the second half.

In the Chron Lynch has an aritcle about the defensive adjustment. Plummer had been playing with a badly strained groin...and wasn't able to get it done against Toomer. So Mora finally told Smith that they were gonna go back to their base two deep Zone (mostly to help Plummer out).

Smith said, 'fine', and added to the reporter; "We wanted to get back to the defense we know best."

Oh, and one more thing.

I'd really like to thank the New York Giants for folding like a cheap, tourist trap, souvenier, Japanese fan.

Whew!!!

League office and head offical came out today and said the game ended on a blown call from the officials.

According to the head official...the P.I call and the blockers downfield calls should have offset...and the Giants should have had another shot at the kick.

Gotta love the woulda-shouldas.

UK: The problem with what the league office said is that Pass interference was NEVER called by any official on the field. The only penalty that was called was inelegible men down field against the Giants. How many plays in a game do you say to yourself that there was a holding call or a pass interference call that the officials missed and that's just the way it is. Any way , my point is that it couldn't possibly be offsetting penalties that would force the play to be run over since only one penalty was actually CALLED on that play. We all know that it was pass interference but like the players always say"It's not a penalty if you get away with it"and NO official called it.Looking at the film the next day the league office can say a flag should have been thrown but I could also probably find 10 other calls that the refs missed(holding, motion, etc.) Anyway,we all know that the long snapper would have blown it again and even if he did snap it properly the kicker probably had only a 50 50 chance of actually kicking it through the uprights(he is horrible).TIM

UK - Last year New England got a lucky break with the tuck rule when Brady was sacked & fumbled to the Raiders they got the ball back and went on and won the Super Bowl, maybe the NINERS will follow suit with an apparent blown call? Oh, well the way the Giants special teams were doing it probably wouldn't have made a difference! How does that saying go "better to be a little lucky and win than good and lose", although you really can't take anything away from the way NINERS played the last 20 minutes, the way things were going, I think one way or another we would've won the game.

core- Garcia was allowed to play his game at the end. That's what he does best. Mooch doesn't call that type of game because he wants ballance.

Man would I love to see Hearst tear the Falcons appart in the NFC Champ game...

our OL, Deese and Stone suffered injuries, otherwise pretty healthy. Bronson foot pain but is expected to be fine.

slappy - if a top notch vet FA corner is out there.. I want him.

wastdmnds - very generous of you. Thank you.

Ninerfaithful - a very well formed post, to which I agree with everything you stated. And I greatly appreciate your comments about the site. They were simply awesome and I'm glad you are enjoying my hard work!

Ninerbill - Tampa's D is a little different... they are much faster than the Giants.. .I wonder if the hurry up would be as effective. Ghettup has apologized below, and I too am sorry for not spotting that comment earlier.

Ghettup - I could live with McAllister :)
I can't believe the turn around in Sehorn.

Jim - Gret post!

Tank - A big problem with the short yardage calls... the first Beasley call was so predictable. Second Garcia's sneak had no push up the middle, bad call because it wasl also a long 'one' as opposed to a foot or a few inches.

Have you seen what Collins has done in the last 4 games? Plummer got killed, and his injury isn't an excuse, but he isn't the first one to get picked on like this.

TIM - Plummer has been battling the injury for a few weeks now.

UK - great post!

Where did the fire come from in the 4th quarter that has been missing all season? Did Mooch turn'em loose? Was this a team win? What does this mean next week in Tampa? Will it be another 3 quarters of crap and then wake up in the 4th or will it be what we have seen all year with 3 quarters of great football and a final quarter of crap? How about a solid game start to finish picking up where they left off with the NYG's. Hopefully this was the wake up call. Hats off to whoever or whatever caused the spark to ignite!!! GO NINERS!!! ...from smiling all day. It feels almost criminal being a 49er fan in New York today, it's so much fun. You would hardly believe the things I've overheard around town today, unless of course the 49ers had lost...

Kevin -- That play where Terrell goes out to pass worked the last time they ran it too -- it busted and he ran for a touchdown.

About the O line, I can't praise them enough for how they've handled the last few weeks.

I was thinking last night over dinner, we beat the healthiest team in the playoffs without three of our starting offensive linemen (OK, Heitman is practically a de facto starter at this point, and Stone was able to go back in during the fourth quarter, but the point is, we essentially beat them with Willig, Heitman, Newberry, Kosier and Gragg, not Deese, Fiore, Newberry, Stone and Gragg), with one starting cornerback out and the other nursing a groin injury, and without our starting kick returner and a handful of other special teams players.

I tell you what, for the first half of that game, Kerry Collins played as great a game as a pure pocket-passing quarterback ever has, and for the second half, Jeff Garcia played as great a game as any scrambling quarterback ever has.

But yeah, this may have become TO's team yesterday, and if it's going to go all the way, it'll be because it's now TO's team as much as it is Garcia's or Mariucci's.

Brett Favre found himself down after the first half against the Falcons on a buggardly cold night in Lambeau Field. Too bad he couldn't muster a rally like Jeff Garcia. Then again, he didn't have Terrell Owens. But, I still thought the two games juxtaposed against eachother offered an interesting perspective...

It was great to see the team come together. The fans were great! It appeared that they really got into the heads of the Giants' players. Those bozos lost their composure. It looked like Fassell blew a gasket arguing a questionable call, Shaun Williams cracked like glass after a 5.7 on the San Andreas Fault, and the two-headed, long haired, inbred TE (Shockey-Campbell) fell into dispair and disrepute on the sideline. Very odd behavior.

ESPN Insider has a good breakdown on free agents this coming off season. I would be hard pressed to find an affordable difference maker. The specualtions is that anyone we would covet will be slapped with the "franchise tag." Here is a peek:

WR: David Boston (franchise), Peerless Price, Eddie Kennison, Kevin Dyson, Reggie Barlow, Martay Jenkins, Ike Hilliard...

OT: Luke Petigout, Walter Jones (franchise), Flozell Adams (franchise), Ryan Young, Wayne Gandy, Jerry Wunsch...

DE: Vonnie Holliday (rejected $4MM a year extension), Brad Scioli, possibly Regan Upshaw and/or Tony Brackens, Keith McKenzie...

DT: Daryl Gardner, Brandon Noble, Cletidus Hunt, Russell Davis, Steve Martin, John Thornton, Santana Dotson...

ILB Note: ESPN suggests that Derek Smith is a potential free agent because "the 49ers drafted Saleem Rasheed last year to be his eventual replacement."

CB: McAllister (franchise), Dre' Bly, possibly DeWayne Washington, Willie Williams, Kenny Wright, Westbrook...

Add these names to your draft wish list, and maybe a shrewed Donahue can complete this team in the coming offseason.

Regarding Mariucci, I don't see anyone throwing draft picks at the 49ers for the right to sign him. I would hate to step back and wait for a college coach to get up to NFL speed (if Spurrier and Butch Davis couldn't do it in one year, then we are talking about a coaching change that would set the 49ers back to 2004 or 2005...when Garcia is 35+). The only NFL coach that might be of interest is Paul Hackett (NYJ offensive coordinator).

Well even though the niners won I was still very dissapointed in the defense. It was terrible. I know that Plummer was hurt but I still think we have some problems with the defensive backs. Bronson did not impress at all while he was in. Very rusty. Things seemed to pick up once Keith came in. I think some of the improvement in the second half has to go to the giants playcalling. What were they thinking?

Now to the offense. I cannot figure out why we are not playing more 3 receiver sets and why Garcia isnt moving around more earlier in the games. It is what he is comfortable with and begging the coaches to let them play like that. We will see if our coaches have finally learned something this week.

I like our matchup against the Bucs offense better that I did the Giants. Its that defense that worries me.

Bottom line the Niners WON! They won when Strahan pointed

The 49ers showed incredible pose and heart. I for one was very impressed and ashamed that I even lost faith in my team. Like most, sometimes you have to be torn down to appreciate the little things on your reconstruction to the top. I have revisited and a renewed feeling for Jeff Garcia.
He played. He held himself together and just did the !@#$ thing.
=====
T.O. is the man cut & dry. I don't care what crass things he says or does... He's not representing me in the White House or dignifies my persona... He flat out balls and that's enough for me. He was the catalyst for this victory and he deserves all the accolades bestowed upon him and then some. The biggest impact receiver in the game.
=====
Julian Peterson has arrived and he seems to be taking no prisoners, I'm starting to get warm on him...
=====
Plummer was abused and misused all game. Armani Toomer embarrassed him thoroughly. Plummer is a good corner, he's not a shut down corner and this isn't he first time Toomer has put lace on his strap. Plummer is what he was at Ohio State; a good corner, period.
=====
John Keith is a gamer and I like him. He needs to be on the field, if health permits he should find himself playing next to Tony "The Beast" Parrish often. He is fluid and I've always felt his upside would yield production.
=====
The Beef upfront did not impress and actually only showed flashes of life. I'll never have anything bad to say about B.Y. so I won't mention him but the pressure in the middle was soft. The perimeter attack was mild and the second layer of defense (LBs) play was fair. Peterson in this game was the exception to the above.
=====
I'll sing this song one more time... Mike Rump is overwhelmed. He's slow and his read & react is not acceptable. (Jeremy Shockey an 'ol Miami Hurricane alum knew just that... he knew Rumph was the weak link in Miami and immediately found him on the field to continue punishing him like old times Sunday.) Rumph IMO is not suited to play corner in the NFL, he may be better positioned at Saftey.
=====
We desparately need to address the corner position EARLY in the draft.

I'm looking for the 9ers to advance to the NFC Championship Game... we'll need all of Kevin Barlow and everything T.O. and Streets got.

Key to the game?

Do the Niners continue to let Garcia open it up or do they fall back into Moochies predictable mid-west-coast offense?

I would love to see Garcia and the Niners come out in the no-huddle.

The coaching staff will probably feel that it is a bad idea since the no-huddle is something we have not practiced much during the regular season and coaches hate anything that they have not mastered in practice.

But Garcia seems so much better when things move away from the predictable. Hes sand lot player who needs to wing it more and hand-off on second down less.

Forget ball control. Ball control will get us beat in the fourth quarter.

Against a real good defensive team like Tampon Bay, the temptation will be to get real conservative and under ordinary circunstances I would agree.

But with a team that has more than a few flaws and with Jeff Garcia as qb I want to see us run the no-huddle all day till Warren Sapp is gasping for air and his tongue is rolling back into his head.

Try the statue of liberty for cryin out loud.

Ninernut: My vcr did indeed come through for me and I just watched the entire game from start to finish! The only downer was the terrible crew that announced the game, they didn't have a clue all day long. I hope they assign someone else to announce next weeks game.

Allen: 1st,The refs did indeed blow it on the last play by not calling pass interference. If they had called it then it would have been offsetting penalties and a rekick. Then your snapper or kicker would have had another chance to blow it.Same outcome!!!
2nd,As I just reported to Ninernut I just watched the game on tape from beginning to end.And like I said in an earlier post from yesterday there are always numerous plays in a game where the refs don't make a call that they should have made. Let me report my findings from this playoff game.

1-During the play where the Giants scored their 1st TD one of your O linemen swung his forearm at Andre Carter's head and practically knocked it off and stopped him in his tracks during his pass rush.A blow to the head is a penalty but it was NOT CALLED . the penalty would have forced the Giants to kick a FG instead of scoring the TD.IF the snap would have been good and IF the kicker didn't shank it then that would have been 4 points that your team would never have scored IF they missed that FG like the two others that would have been 7 less points for your team all because the refs DIDN'T THROW THE FLAG.

2-21 seconds before halftime the Giants completed a 35 yard pass that 2 plays later led to a Giants TD. On that 35 yard play one of your O linemen was holding Andre Carter's facemask as he rushed the QB, for all to see. But the refs DIDN'T THROW A FLAG and 2 plays later your team scored a TD. With a holding or facemask call on that play there is NO WAY the Giants score any points before the half,as a matter of fact they probably kneel down and go into the half at that point.

3-30 seconds to go in the game, the player on the left end of the Giants O line moved before the snap and guess what,NO FLAG! That's another 5 yards your team should have had to overcome to get into FG range(whatever that range is for your lame FG unit)(probably extra point range and still that's no sure thing for the Giants this year ).And don't forget that your team would have been 12-15 points behind at this point if the refs had not blown all these calls I have mentioned so a FG would not do your team any good anyway!!!

4-On the same play the refs missed that motion call on your O lineman, with 30 seconds to go in the game and the Niners leading our CB,Plummer intercepted the ball to ice the game and when he landed on the ground your WR knocked the ball out of his hands and one ref called it an interception and another 2 refs said incomplete pass.Talk about a turning point in the game!!! But of course the 2 refs decided to overrule the 1 who said it was an interception and give the ball back to the Giants? On such a crucial play you just know that the refs upstairs will of course call for the replay so they can be very sure that they are not unfairly giving the ball and perhaps the ballgame to the Giants.(with under 2 minutes to go the coach cannot call for a replay).Guess what,THE REFS DIDN'T EVEN LOOK AT A REPLAY?????????? I looked at it many many times and I am still not completely sure if he intercepted it or not but my point is that with the game on the line(just like the last play of the game when the refs DIDN'T CALL PASS INTERFERENCE) THE REFS DIDN'T MAKE THE CALL for instant replay that could have ended the game!!!

So you see Allen, just like in most NFL games, the refs don't call a number of penalties they should call and they often call things as penalties that are not(like pass interference in many cases). That's life and because of replay we don't have to live with it quite as often as in the past but sometimes we just have to bite our lips and live with inept refs.
Just refering to that one blown call on the last play is very unfair because as I have shown in this post,if all the calls were called properly by the refs all day long then your team would have lost by a much larger score than they DID LOSE by !!!!!(NO doubt about that!) TIM

Just like Monday morning, I got up today, had a cup of coffee and thuroughly enjoyed the sports section of two newspapers...Life is Good when the NFL officials are apologizing to the OTHER team!

JJ Boss: Shockey has been dominant for 16 weeks, so I wasn't expecting Mike Rumph (Julian Peterson, Tony Parrish or Zach Bronson) to shut Jeremy down. Shockey is better than Tony "Pretty Boy" Gonzalez. In fact, I would say I was pleasantly surprised by Rumph. Do you think Jason Webster would have done any better?

I have looked at the list of free agent corners expected to be available this spring, and I have read all the initial draft material on the web (sad to see PFW's Joel Buschbaum pass away), and I just don't see a CB that will upgrade our pass defense unit in 2003. Assuming that Chris McAllister is franchised by the Ravens, there isn't a "shut down" corner available, and drafting at the 26th spot in the first round prevents Donahue from selecting an immediate impact rookie.

First Round CB Talent:

1. Terrance Newman (5'11, 175) Kansas State - fastest man in draft, the consensus top rated CB will be long gone.
2. Andre Woolfolk (6'1, 185) Oklahoma - extremely athletic, but converted WR, has only played CB for two years, ie., RAW!
3. Marcus Trufant (5'10, 185) Washington State - might be our man, but will he be available? (Jason Webster-sized)
4. Dennis Weathersby (6'1, 205) Oregon State - experienced, with some limitations...kinda like Rumph, but not as tough.
5. Derrick Strait (5'11, 195) Oklahoma - Huddle Report rates him a Top 15 player, but this junior needs refinement.
6. Nathan Vasher (5'11, 185) Texas - I must admit, I don't know anything about this guy.

Where is the answer to our pass defense problems? After those first three corners listed above, I don't know if one exists. Dre' Bly? Are you kidding me? Should Donahue go after Cleveland's RFA Lewis Sanders? It will cost us a draft pick. Short of some team with an early pick in the first round courting Steve Mariucci, I don't think the 49ers are in a position to improve on Plummer or Webster. Rumph's progress is the only thing I can hope for.

By the way, there are some players who are always injured, and some who always wear down by the playoffs. Wasn't Jason Webster slowed by injury at the end of last season, too? Isn't the Dave Fiore injury train so predictable that you have to make other travel plans? What about the aging Deese? When does the front office admit they cannot bank on these guys year in and year out with multi-year contracts and huge salary cap commitments?

Doug Brzezinski (6'4, 305) is a young, tough Eagles lineman who can play all five line positions and is experienced in the Andy Reid's WCO. I would not resign Matt Willig and Ben Lynch (combined cap figure of $2.3MM) and offer $2.5M a year to Brzezinski. Then, I would decide between injury-prone Fiore and aging Deese, with Deese's LT skills heavily in his favor. One of these big contracts needs to be axed.

Is Wayne Gandy an upgrade over Deese at LT? I see him as a more athletic Kirk Scrafford. Can Gandy be signed with some of the cap space saved in restructuring Terrell Owens' contract? If so, there is an abundance of LG options: Deese, Fiore, Brzezinski, Heitmann, Kosier, etc.

With minimal lifting, I can imagine an o-line of: Gragg, Stone, Newberry, Brzezinski and Deese. With some heavier lifting, I can see: Gragg, Stone, Newberry, Brzezinski, and Gandy, with Deese (or Fiore), and Heitmann and Kosier in reserve.

If Donahue doesn't want to use the cap savings from Terrell's contract restructure and extension on Gandy, then he should invest it in Vonnie Holiday, Daryl Gardner, Brandon Noble, or Cletidus Hunt. If Donahue cannot land Trufant or Woolfolk with the 26th pick, then he should consider drafting Cory Redding or Michael Haynes, and drop Vonnie Holliday from this list of free agent d-linemen. He also needs to make a decision about Dana Stubblefield. The original contract let the 49ers dump Stubby after this season without serious salary cap ramifications. I don't know how last spring's restructure affected this, but the original deal had Dana making over $4MM this year (March roster bonus included). I think some of those younger DT's might make a bigger impact and be more worthy of that kind of commitment. Cut Sean Moran, and keep either Okeafor or Engelberger.

Nothing could have stirred a 49er fan more than what they witnessed last Sunday, it was a true inspiration and a miracle that transpired right before our very eyes. Something magic happened along the San Francisco sideline that afternoon, something that stirred the inner regions of their emotions as this game seemed so out of reach and hopeless.
Coming out of a 24-point black hole the 49ers led under Jeff Garcia and Terrell Owens led like a Joe Montana and Jerry Rice combination from the past. The 49ers at that time were staring at a score on their scoreboard that read 38-14 and seemed so very out of reach. But what it did was awaken a champion attitude that seemed like the ghosts of all the San Francisco past that existed within the confines of 3Com-Park were a part of. Somehow someway the 49ers put together one successful drive after another with the 49er defense rising to the expectations that we all desired it to.
25 straight points were the order of the day in that second half, Kerry Collins and company in Amani Toomer and Jeremy Shockey had surgically dissected us in the first half. In fact we looked absolutely pathetic in trying to find ways to stop their passing onslaught of 327 total passing yards five scoring touchdowns. Veteran 49er cornerback Ahmed Plummer looked lost and bewildered in trying to curb Toomer’s receptions and scoring.
It was irritating to see him not look back to see where the ball was when he was next to Toomer and defending him. On the other hand Julian Peterson lived up to his name in neutralizing a very cocky individual in Jeremy Shockey whom in my opinion disrespected all of San Francisco with his rude antics and disrespectful mannerisms. Of all the Giants I wanted knocked out with legitimate reasons I would have to vote for him.
I am also proud of how the 49ers handled the incident following the Tai Streets touchdown that made the score 39-38. Giant’s strong safety Shaun Williams and Terrell Owens became involved in a shouting match that quickly rose out of control. Williams who threw a punch was ejected and Terrell Owens besides ranting and raving kept his cool because he had big Jeremy Newberry there to defend his honor. I am proud of Newberry for going in and defending a teammate that is so invaluable to this team, you couldn’t ask for a better companion in any given dispute.
One has to be happy as well at the play of the offensive line as it never allowed a sack to happen from sack masters Michael Strahan and Kenny Holmes. In fact Scott Gragg neutralized Strahan all day in this contest and provided Jeff the ability to make important plays in the second half. One has to be concerned with our secondary in allowing Collins to carve out such a commanding lead; we even allowed 119 total yards in rushing with Tiki Barber accounting for all but four of those yards.
What we did learn though was that Steve Mariucci is not “Joe Conservative” all of the time in fact he really tried to force and do some creative things wells throughout the game. One thing was for sure and that was to get the ball in our big money playmaker in Terrell Owens and that’s exactly what we did. I hope that the union between these two continues to blossom and grow on a daily basis, it honestly seems real now that Owens has ascended to the top as a leader on this team. He has made that happen by being more involved and putting restrictions on the media that have burned him far too often.
No one can dispute from now on that Jeff Garcia doesn’t fit the prototype that Joe Montana and Steve Young represent. He has the uncanny ability to comeback after being literally bombed out of the show to posting a victory over an opponent that thought all was well for their victory trip back to the Big Apple. We gave them something to bring back there a loss that proved that anything is possible in this league. Despite the bad officiating at the end of which I can sympathize with we earned this victory by pushing the Giant defense to the wayside when we had to the most.
Tampa Bay presents momentous problems for us from a defensive standpoint in knowing that the have one of the fastest units on the field in the league today. We need the same commitment we saw against the Giants except we need it while on the road. What make me sicker than I was in the first half of this game is the media labeling of cheating and that we do not deserve the next contest against the Buccaneers.
That is why winning this game will silence the so called critics and move the team out of that bracket to one that says we are for real folks. We stood on the brink of destruction folks only for a moment and reacted the way that any true champion does, and that was to go back out and fight as a collective unit.

Tim,

You had a lot of good points. I agree with you. By the way, I'm not a Giants fan, I really don't have a team that I follow religously. Rod, on the other hand is your typical Niner fan. No understanding. Just ego. The Niners are a good team that got fired up at the right time during last Sunday's game. It took a lot of heart. Oh how things will change on this coming Sunday though. While you watch the game, think about the words I speak now. Niners, out of playoffs, again! That Buc defense will stomp them out. People are talking about NFC Championship game, wow, they're dreaming. Even if they made it there, they'd most likely face the Eagles. The 49ers are going to march into Tampa Bay and get a win???, then go up to Philadelphia and win???not a chance guys, enjoy this win.

If my memory serves me correctly, the 49ers received several appologies from the NFL in 2000 regarding pass interference calls that should've never been called, Jason Webster was the player they were called against mostly.

Allen - don't be so sure of yourself about the NINERS game this Sunday, if nothing else, this season has shown anything is possible! After this last game how can we not believe. Tampa's offense is no where near the NYG's, but there defense will be a challenge, if we can stay away from turnovers and bad QB decisions, then we stand a good chance, by the way both few turnovers & bad decisions are somthing the 49ers are real good at! I sure hope your wrong!

49er To the Core,

Your team was at home and almost lost a heartbreaker. That game was their season. There will surely be a let down especially after all of the controversy over the end of the game. Don't think those doubts don't enter players and coaches minds. Tampa Bay is a very hostile crowd. Probably second to Oakland Fans or even worse, the old L.A. Raiders fans. People were getting stabbed at the games back during the L.A. days. I'm just saying that it will be extremely tough for them to win down there. I expect a lot of turnovers by Garcia. He almost threw a number of them last Sunday that were dropped by the Giants. The DB's in Tampa won't drop them. Also, right on Buccy.

JJBoss- great to hear from you. Can't wait till all our safeties are healthy including Curtis...

I agree with just about everything you said.

I think our corner has to come from FA not the draft. Some one good like McAllister. It's worth the money.

Domingo - I think TB will expect us to come out in the no huddle. So this may actually not be a good idea. Perhaps I'm reading into it too much. Perhaps a no huddle first drive that focusses on the run from the three receiver set would be effective.

TIM - I believe that ball was uncatchable... but hey to each their own.

good point on the penalties.

I THINK MORA'S DEFENSIVE SCHEME IS PASSIVE,MAINLY WITH THE SECONDARY. IT SEEMS THAT THEY ARE SO SET ON NOT GIVING UP THE BIG PLAY THAT THEY WOULD LET OFFENSES JUST DRIVE THE FIELD WITH NO PROBLEM. OCASSIONALLY MORA WILL THROW IN A BLITZ BECAUSE THE FRONT 4(EXCEPT ANDRE CARTER)IS NOT GETTING ANY PRESSURE ON THE QB. THE CORNERS ARE NEVER IN POSITION TO SET IN FRONT OF A PASS JUST THERE TO MAKE THE TACKLE.FOR THE DRAFT I THINK WE GIVE RUMPH ANOTHER SEASON AND TRY FOR A PASS RUSHING DT OR DE OR IF NONE IS AVAILABLE IN THE LOW PART OF THE 1ST ROUND WHY NOT THE BEST RECEIVER AVAILABLE BECAUSE I THINK JJ STOKES IS GONE FOR NEXT YEAR AND WITH OWENS,AND STREETS THAT MIGHT MAKE THE OFFENSE EVEN MORE EXPLOSIVE

Tank, please let me in on what pleasantries you received from Mike Rumph's performance Sunday. Often, I found Mike left in his squat watching his own feet to see if they worked, after Shockey or Toomer ripped by him. I'm listening to ex-players in the booth baffled why Kerry Collins isn't exploiting Rumph more... To Mike's credit I think I saw him make one significant tackle throughout the entire game and maybe some mild pressure on Shockey; more like an ill-advised pass. Tank we're old Forum stablemates; please open me up to something I missed.

I personally think Rumph had a good game. When a DB doesn't get called out once in a game by the announcers that's a good game. The announcers were calling for Collins to pass to him. I'm assuming that since Collins didn't then he Rumph was holding his own against Shockey and Hilliard. I especially liked how he actually got agressive and went for the interception. He read the route perfectly and if the pass was a good one Rumph would have picked it off and gone back for 6! The pass was low and behind Shockey who had to make an adjustment for the pass. Going for a pick does not look to me like watching one's own feet.

Anybody know what Webster's and Winborn's status is for this Sunday's game?

After the defense performance in the past few games the national media has been ripping the 49ers defense, but I remember that in the early part of the season most of the media was talking about how good the defense was.

What changed? Nothing except for some key players getting injured.

My point is that defense is not as bad as its stats say it is. At different times through the year Jaime Winborn, Zach Bronson, Ahmed Plummer, Jason Webster and John Keith have all missed time. Not to mention not having Kevin Curtis who I saw at Texas Tech and I think can be a good player for the 49ers.

When the 49ers defense is healthy it is a good defense.

Is there anyone from this forum here who used to post on the sportstalk.com board a few years back?

With Buccy and Allen it reminds me of this one character on the board who bashed the 9ers all the time and would post more than the avid 9ers.

It'd be cool if some of you guys were from that board.I was brian4987 if you remember or not.

I get the sickets pleasure to see NYers sulk around that their team lost.

Bitching and wining about the refs.

The score remains the same.

As for the 9er haters.I'm going to love to see Brad Jhonson in the probowl...Congradulations on getting past the first round of the playoffs, its been a while.

What ever insults we may throw at each other it is going to be a good ol' time to see two teams clash.

Fearyaks, if what Mike Rumph exhibited on the field Sunday was a good game... then I'd really be interested in your version of a bad one. Rumph was holding his own against Shockey??? I'm getting suspicious if you even saw the game.(FYI) Hilliard has been out for the season for about a month... If that is the type-caliber of performance you desire then Fearyaks you're not hard to please... why address the corner situation at all Rumph seems to have it nailed down... Shockey would've caught Rumph before he got to the 40 yard line if the good Lord would've seen to it he intercepted one. Rumph was aggresively chasing receivers all day, please don't extract one play to represent his overall effectiveness.

Ya know it kinda sucks that after all the hard work the 49ers did coming back to beat the Giants, it has to be tainted by a blown call. Could you imagine if the roles were reversed? We'd be calling for the refs head. However they have no one to blame but themselves they were up by 24 points and Shockey dropped a TD. Honestly it should have never come down to a FG attempt.

To more important stuff like the Bucs.
Mariucci: Take a look at the Steelers tape. You'll see how the Bucs are vulnerable. I think it will be very difficult for us to run the ball. The Bucs D is too fast! We gotta spread the field and hopefully get a couple big plays

Defensivly: they really don't have the offensive weapons the Giants have. They haven't run the football with any consistency all year and the WR don't have great speed. Mora will have to mix up his coverages and get some pressure on Johnson. We must tackle well and limit the gains. Frustrate them into turnovers which will be key. We must win the turnover battle.

Go Niners

JJ take it easy ok? I did not say that Rumph had a perfect day. I said he had a good game. He did not give up a big play. Did not give up 2 TDs (Plummer) or even 1 TD (Parrish). He wasn't caught with his feet planted (like he was against the Eagles and Packers). He held his own out there which is what I ask for a rookie DB.
I watched the game and if you'd like I will bust out the tape and watch it again highlighting Shockey's catches and who they were against. In case you hadn't heard Shockey and Peterson were more often lined up against each other.
Often, I found Mike left in his squat watching his own feet to see if they worked, after Shockey or Toomer ripped by him. since he was 'often found watching his own feet' why don't you tell me a couple of plays in which Toomer ripped by him??? or even Shockey ripping by him while he dawdled like Forest Gump.
why address the corner situation at all Rumph seems to have it nailed down
Err this is not what I am saying at all. In fact I think Rumph is the weak link in our secondary. I would have no problem finding someone else to take his spot. I simply thought that he had a good game against the Giants.
Shockey would've caught Rumph before he got to the 40 yard line if the good Lord would've seen to it he intercepted one. Does it matter if he'd have been caught? I suppose it would have had he been gawking at his feet instead of trying to put the ball in the endzone.
please don't extract one play to represent his overall effectiveness.
Then please give me two plays in which he was left in his squat watching his own feet to see if they worked.

I think you are confusing #24 for #29 as Plummer was the one who was out of place most of the game (though he did have a groin injury).

I agree, with you on the turnover battle against Tampa Bay, they're a very oppurtunistic bunch. Does anyone think Rashad Holman or Anthony Parker have a chance at being nickle or dime DB? If not, we absolutely got to go for the best the FA has available, even if it costs us a pretty penny! We need quality and quantity! Hopefully Rumph will pan out (I'm not holding my breath).

If there is a stud WR available in the top 2 rounds (as we'll be picking behind alot of teams) I hope to goodness we get someone who could put Streets on the bench say about half way through the season and help free up T.O. Heck if there is a TE, that has Shockey type talent, I would not be opposed to getting a TE early and have Eric Johnson as a #2 TE.

I see some real promise in Josh Shaw (round 5 pick DT) from what little I have seen of him, he looks very active and in the backfield early, could he become a #2-#3 DT that gives us a pass rush up the middle? I hope so, I think that was thier hope when they drafted him!

Next year could be a very exciting year for our Defense especially, to get all our talent back & healthy and playing together, Winborn & Curtis & Shaw in particular. Hey, special teams also, Jimmy Williams, Terry Jackson & maybe Terry Killens?! I though Chandler & LaFleur looked pretty good with the kicking & punting also.

If we can add a couple of OL the deepen & stregnthen our OL this would be a big plus.

JJ Boss: You say to fearyaks, "if what Mike Rumph exhibited on the field Sunday was a good game... then I'd really be interested in your version of a bad one."

My version of a "bad game" is what I saw Ahmed Plummer suffer. My version of a "bad game," is every previous game I watched this season that Rumph gave up one, two or three touchdowns. Painful memories...need I remind everyone?

I was going to be a smart ass and simply reply that, "I was "pleasantly surprised" because Rumph didn't get torched," but I actually saw him stick guys in run support, I saw him keep the receiver in front of him, and like fearyaks, I liked the break Rumph made on the ball that he nearly intercepted. It was aggressive...it would have been a nut buster for the Giants. Everyone likes to recall that Plummer ended the game with a near INT...but was Ahmed's defense really that remarkable on that play? Did he break on the pass? No! He simply had the sense to turn around...which he lacked earlier in the game. Not so for Rumph...he actually broke on the ball. That is a hell of a lot more than he did in the second half of the second Seattle game. Yes, I saw rumph get caught flat footed and the announcers made sure the rest the the veiwing audience did too. But, he didn't give up six on the play, which is a lot more than Plummer could say.

Everything that can be said about how phenomenal the game was on Sunday has been said. For my own benefit, I was breathless afterward. This victory ranked right up there with "the Catch" and "the Catch II" for me. This victory is the right shot in the arm at the right time for the Niners. This is the confidence builder the Niners need. If the whole team believes they can win, they will.

The Bucs defense will be very tough this weekend. A couple of things concern me:

(1) Rumph MUST be more physical on the line. He is supposed to be a big, strong CB. He must jam the receivers.

(2) We must get more pressure on the QB. Our pass rush is pathetic. Yeah I know Carter has 12.5 sacks, but they never seem to come in the big games. We must use Peterson more as a pass rusher.

(3) All season I have been frustrated by the Niners' D on 3rd down. Not surprisingly, a stat. was showed on Sunday that we have the worst defense on 3rd down in the league!!!!! That MUST be corrected.

This has been a wacky season. Anything can happen. There really aren't any dominant teams this year. If we continue to play the way we did in the last quarter of Sunday's victory, maybe we can bring home our 6th Lombardi Trophy.

Incidentally, I have no problem being the beneficiary of a bad call. We are usually on the other end of the bad call. It's true that what comes around goes around. We've suffered many heart-breakig losses due to bad calls or Lady Luck favoring the opposition. This time we won out--and we deserved to. Hopefully Lady Luck smiles on us some more. Time will tell.
