I'd have to disagree with you regarding Kerry Collins physically being "way ahead of Garcia."
Kerry Collins is bigger than Jeff Garcia. Collins is 6'5", 248 to Garcia's 6'1", 195. And Collins throws the ball harder than Garcia, though they can throw it about the same distance.
But Collins has this crazy "windup" motion when he throws the ball--horrible mechanics. And Garcia is a better scrambler, and his footwork in general is far superior. While Collins at times develops lead feet, Garcia is always moving his feet. Just a thought.
To continue the debates I apparently have going on a few fronts...

In response to your inquiry of what I would do to upgrade the line from what it is right now, I'd agree that we need to add a young, dominant left tackle. Derrick Deese won't be around forever and no, he's not "dominant". He's not the next Tra Thomas or Orlando Pace or whomever. Doesn't mean he's not plenty good.
But really, I dont see where you see the 49ers line being dominated either. In fact, if you watch film or you just watch in game situations, more often than not, the 49ers' line holds their own. They win the battles in the trenches. The offensive line is a big reason the team won ten games this year because, even though they're not constructed of 1st round picks with physical talent out the wazoo, they are extremely well coached, athletic players who play great together. Sure, you could potentially upgrade them, but that's not the POINT. The point is that they do NOT get dominated. They're not in the ranks of the all-time great offensive lines of the past, but they win battles. What more can you realistically ask for?

Brother, I didnt even see your post calling Garcia the 14th best QB in the league until tonight.
And I have been laughing at you for nearly the last half hour.
My list of five was QBs who I perceive to be flat out better than Jeff Garcia. All of them are unattainable. Most of the other QBs you list can be potentially ranked above him or can be identified as players with greater "upside" (whatever that means), but yes, I feel my list of five are the QBs who are plain and simple, flat out, better than Garcia.
However, your quote about Jake Plummer:
"In fact, I'd put him very high on that list of guys who are better than Garcia, because his skills and physical tools are such a perfect fit for the Niner offensive system."
Is correct. His physical tools are very well-suited for the offense.
But 49ers fans know that the West Coast offense is not predicated on physical tools. In fact, it's a much more cerebral offense. It relies on QBs being able to make quick, smart decisions, staying in rhythm, and making plays. Not being able to wing the ball 70 yards downfield, not standing 6'5" in the pocket. If the 49ers needed that, Jim Druckenmiller would be starting right now. Toughess and mental acumen will put a QB in a far better position to run the West Coast offense than arm strength.
And honestly, you'd really rank Jeff Garcia behind every single QB on that list? I somehow find that hard to believe, even coming from you. Fact is, though I could certainly rank several more QBs ahead of Garcia based purely on this season, I think overall, when you look at the big NFL picture and rank QBs based on overall performance, Garcia does figure to be in or near the top five. Certainly in the top ten. Hell, pure statistics place him there.
But to rank him behind Brian Griese? Well that just undercuts every other good point you've made.
