Another article on Jan 11th in the San Jose Mercury, this time by Dennis Georgatos states that John Madden says he thinks Mooch will not be back with the 49ers next year!!! Madden thinks the same senario that led to Gruden leaving the Raiders is in place with Mooch and the Niners and he thinks it will play out the same way.
Georgatos also said that 8 of the 49ers 17 assistant coaches contracts are up in a few weeks and that last year they were ALL offered extentions by York but ALL of them turned him down!!! Georgatos said maybe it was because there was little or no pay raises included in the extentions.Maybe they all want to keep their options open so they can freely follow Mooch if he leaves as Madden has stated he will. Of course York has denied talking to Madden about any of this. It seems that this all fits in with the strategy of offering Mooch a lowball contract extension(just like the assistants got)and when Mooch is insulted and turns it down then York can say he is letting Mooch go at Mooch's request because Mooch didn't want the new contract he was offered. He will claim he is just cutting costs like he said he would last week and that under those new cost cutting guidelines he couldn't offer Mooch as much as Mooch wanted(or could get elsewhere). The behind the sceens manuevering is getting very interesting to watch. Personally I believe Mooch will wind up staying but behind the smiles and public statements the pot is really starting to boil !!! Interesting stuff! TIM
