I know, I know...Mariucci blew it with 40 seconds to go in the half. What was the fool thinking? Why did he run out the clock? I mean, Garcia was on fire (he is the man in the "no huddle" offense) and everything was going so well (sarcasm). Hey, with 32 "long" seconds and 60 "short" yards against the #1 defense...and with the offense clicking, why did Mooch call it quits and try to regroup?
Gee, you don't think it had anything to do with the INT Garcia threw at the 26 yard line a minute earlier, do you? That 'no huddle" was so successful...it resulted in seven points for Tampa! You don't think it had anything with Garcia being sick and playing awful? Or, the offensive line getting humiliated by Sapp and Co., who were teeing off in an obvious passing situation? What harm would have come if Garcia dropped back to pass and Simeon rice had come by to swat the ball out of his hands? Just a field goal.
Lets face it Niners fans, you are dillusional. All I read about is how great Garcia is, how many Pro Bowl offensive linemen we have (or should have), how solid our defense is (with Winborn), and that Plummer is a shutdown CB, etc., but the schemes suck 'cause the coaches are idiots.
Check out this typical forum masterpiece posted yesterday:
"The 49ers are as talented defensively as Philadelphia and Tampa Bay, arguably the top two defenses in the league."
So, what does this fan say to back up this deft analysis?
"Although the pass rush is horrible and non-existent..."
ME: This is the very next sentence after saying the 49ers have as much talent a Philly and the Bucs. How can I stop from laughing?
"The linebackers are athletic and fast yet they miss too many tackles..."
ME: See a pattern developing here? Is this evidence of talent?
"Julian Peterson is becoming a star and Derek Smith...(blah, blah, blah)...However, the weakest link is Jeff Ulbrich. At best, a decent reserve on most teams, he somehow amazes me with the playing time and four year contract extension he received. He takes himself out of the play, gets overpowered in the running game, and simply cannot cover anyone."
ME: Heads up! Neither Derek Smith, nor Ulbrich would start for Philadelphia or Tampa Bay!
"The secondary, although getting torched this season, is the strongest part of the team."
ME: Yes, he wrote this, not me...
"Ahmed Plummer is a solid cornerback...Jason Webster, although small, is solid cover corner although he does get overpowered by bigger wide receivers."
ME: Typical fan logic: "My team is good enough to beat anybody...my players are better than everyone elses...all my team needs is pass rush AND a stud cornerback like Aeneas Williams AND Winborn to be healthy AND..."
Predictably, the same people who think Mariucci and his coaches are holding back the team, are now addressing other offseason needs, like the need for a #2WR, another tight end, and a more dominant offensive line, like these missing pieces haven't impacted the coaching.
Do any of you forum regulars manage a business, store, unit? If you have a number of employees who report to you, and some of these people falter, would firing you solve the problems for your company? Hell, do any of you report to a manager? If you don't make your sales quota, would firing your boss improve your numbers? Have any of you guys worked construction? When the project runs over budget, or falls behind a month, do you fire the site foreman? Does that make the quality of your work better?
I watched K-19 "The Widowmaker" last night. Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson are Soviet officers of a nuclear sub on its maiden voyage in 1961 (based on true story). The Communist party heads have placed tremendous political and military importance on the timely launch and successful operation of this powerful, strategic sub. As it heads out of the port, one of the Communist leaders says, "I hope we have chosen the right man," speaking of the ship's commander (Harraison Ford's character). When problems begin to surface because of shoddy or rushed work on the infrastructure...and critical equipment is missing because the government supplier ran out...and young and/or inexperienced engineers and doctors are forced into service because others were found drunk...all the suspicion and blame came down on the captain. The conclusion back in Moscow was that they had chosen the wrong man. It wasn't until 1989 that the truth came out...and they probably had the right man all along.
Niners fans are hellbent to lynch the Captain (Mariucci), even though it is obvious to anyone with an offseason wish list of WRs, OL, LDE, CBs, TE and special teams that the 49ers ship is terribly flawed.
I said it the other day, and I will say it again...I don't think Bill Walsh himself could have won the Super Bowl with this quarterback, with this team. It is inherently flawed. If Mariucci moves on, you will not be any closer to the Super Bowl unless HUGE personnel changes are made.
You have to go back to the 1986 playoffs to find a 49ers team that scored less in a playoff game. A 49-3 loss to the New York Giants. Bill Walsh was the coach, Joe Montana was the quarterback, Jerry Rice dropped the ball running for a 50 yard touchdown...with a better QB and more talent, Walsh got clocked by a lesser team. Tel me Niners Faithfuls, were you blaming Walsh back then?
