I am always reluctant to criticize coaching. I hope that I know enough to know that I really dont know enough to knock the coaches very often.

So I will quote Bill Walsh to make a point about Steve Marriuccis future.

Actually Bill Walsh was quoting Al Davis when Walsh anounced that he was quitting as head coach of the 49ers after the 89 super bowl.

Walsh said that after a certain length of time a head coach simply loses his effectivness as the leader of a team and that it just becomes his time to move on, regardless of how good a coach is.

Thats the position I take with Steve Marriucci.

Hes a good coach who has taken us through some tough times.

Hes a class guy who has represented us well.

But it just might be his time.

If it is, if Donahue and Walsh decide to make a change I wish Mooch well.

If Donahue makes that decision then all the pressure falls on Donahue.

The lure of extra draft picks will be on everyones mind but does Donahue have the chutz to pull off the gambit that Al Davis did so masterfully last season?

That was a complicated move to say the least and I am not confident in Donahues ability to duplicate what the Raiders did.

Regardless, the off season will be interesting.

Like the end of the 1999 season, the 49ers are at another cross roads. I hope that Donahue is compatant enough to see us through.

I have loved the 49ers for many, many years. Its always tough to see a season end like this but I take solace in one thing----

The 2003 offseason has begun!

Heres to Donahue and Walsh pulling some rabbits out of their hats!

God bless the 49ers in 2003!

Its gonna be our year baby!
