The short term memory of some of the poster's on this board really amazes me. Did you really believe that last week's game was going to be the harbinger of some big change in the 49er Universe. The simple fact is that the Niner's got beat by a better team today. All of the the shortcomings that have been discussed to death in this forum came back to haunt them. Poor third down defense, no reliable third corner, lack of a pass rush, injuries all through the defense and, today especially, along the offensive line. Lack of any real playmakers beyond Owens and Garcia. I don't know about you guys but the game I saw showed the niners getting overpowered on the line when they had the ball and, again not be able to generate much pass rush when they were on defense, where they ended up having to play Rumph and Holman as their starters. Someone above said that the team had to quit using injuries as an excuse but the fact is that for today's game at least the niners didn't have two NFL quality corners that they could put on the field. Someone else mentioned that there was a report of Garcia and Owens yelling at Mariucci to open the game up. Correct me if I'm wrong but that wasn't Mariucci who threw 4 picks today and fumbled the ball away during your beloved no huddle drive. That wasn't Mariucci who wasn't able to keep the Bucs defensive lineman out of the backfield. That wasn't Mariucci that kept giving up third down completions so that his offense couldn't get back the field. So many of you guys seem to think that the team should just be able to come out and do whatever it wants on the field whenever it wants regardless of who they're playing. Tampa Bay has the #1 defdense in the league my guess is the way you play that team is to get your offense out on the field and see what works in a game situation. There's probably a limit to what you can plan before you're actually butting heads with people. You can't underestimate the emotional make up of a team on any given day. The Bucs players were clearly motivated to win. I'm sure the 49ers were too but it was so obvious that to me that they didn't have the talent to keep up with the Bucs. I'm surprised so few of you seem to have seen it. Instead it's the same sorry a$$ story that keeps getting told in this forum all the time. When the team wins it's the players who have done it despite the ineptitude of their coach. When they lose it's because Mariucci is too conservative. Personally I hope they give Mariucci a five year extension, though my guess is it will probably be three, if they offer it, then I hope they go out and get him the players he needs to really compete.
