At the beginning of the year, did any of you think the 49ers would win the Lombardi trophy this year? I of course always had hope that we would, but that was my heart, my head told me "hopefully we can build of last year's 12-4 finish and compete for the NFC West crown this year and make it to the playoffs and win one game." Well we won the NFC West, but were two games off last year's pace. The offense and defense both tailed off from last year, but we were still one of the top teams in the NFL!!! I think next year we have to step forward, both our offense and defense need to improve. The 49ers are young and still rising. Hopefully next year we can learn from this year and know that you have to get the bye week to advance (especially in the NFC). Those should be this team's goals for next year. Improve in all areas, and that includes special teams. Everything that could go wrong yesterday did. It's not a coincidence that the NFL's final four can all play good defense (Titans are cleary the weakest of the four teams left). That's what is frustrating to me with the fans on this forum. A lot of the posters here would like to see us draft for offense next year, while it is clear to me we are still severely lacking playmakers on the defensive side of the ball. Did we even return a fumble or interception for a touchdown this year? I don't remember it, if we did...Yes, we do need another receiver and help on the OL, I would like to see Barlow be our starting back next year. I think in the draft we have to take the best available player who fits one of our many needs. Maybe alternate between offense and defense in each round. We have IMO good frontline players, it's when the starters get hurt that we get into trouble because we lack depth. I don't know who said it the other night during the Philly game, the Eagles can afford to lose a starter here or there because their backups are not much of a dropoff from their frontline players. All in all it was a good year for the 49ers but the consistency from week to week needs to be there. My thoughts on Mooch are that he is a good coach but will never be great because he never goes for the jugular. Tell me what other coach gets embarrassed in the preseason (Redskins) and then when he has a chance to
run-up the score a bit in the regular season he refuses...(What a great guy!) We don't need a great guy for a coach, we need a Rutless, take no prisoners, tough SOB that will go for the throat after the defense makes a great play to start the game!!! (see yesterday 1st quarter Rusty Johnson gives us a gift on their side of the field and we go 3 and out) We WILL be BACK, hopefully the Jaguars are dumb enough to cough up a couple of draft picks and some money to hire Mooch away from us. He might be a great guy and all that, I just don't see him taking enough advantage of our offense to win it all. (See no-huddle, Giants game) Yes you do need balance and all that, but the top teams pad their rushing stats because they get the lead to begin with. That has been my contention this year, pass to open up the run, not vice-versa. Here comes the line all losers always say, "There's always next year!"
Always Faithful!!!
