Re: resigning Charlie Garner. As you know...I was/am a huge Garner fan. But it's not like the Niners didn't want to resign him.

After putting up fantastic numbers with the Niners Charlie was looking for a pay day. Remember, he was looking for a 4 million dollar contract after his second year with us.

The Niners couldn't afford it at that time...and he knew it.

Darndest thing though. He just didn't get any offers at the price he was asking...and ended up signing late with the Raiders for less than the Niners had originally offered.

It was a shame the way it worked out... but it's not like the Niners kicked him out.

While I'll never say Walsh has been faultless...you've used Stenstrom's name twice, that I've noticed, when tryng to show that even Walsh made boneheaded mistakes.

Here's the thing though.

While Stenstrom didn't work out, the reasons for bringing him in made perfect sense.

Aside from the fact that Stenstrom fell just two TD passes short of John Elway's all time Pac 10 TD record (75) Stenstrom knew the system.

And that's the key. After spending time as Walsh's QB as Stanford, Stenstrom knew the system, the calls and the terminology. And of the few QBs that actually knew the system...Stenstrom was the least expensive.

He, like Garcia, was brought in as a possible back-up for Steve Young. And while Stenstrom's slow feet made him less than effective...Garcia's lack of background in the Niner offense made him darned near as ineffective as Stenstrom had been.

As for Carmazzi and Druckenmiller...What can I say?

Walsh was complaining about the Druck pick and saying they should have drafted Plummer before either QB had even gone to a mini camp. Did Vinny/Dwight/Carmen screw up? Did they outsmart themselves? Or did Walsh set them up to make them look bad?

And as for Gio...that's the pick Marty takes credit for. And he even came out in the first training camp and publicly said that he thought he'd made a mistake.

Walsh is the guy who in the 7th round traded up to get Rattay in that same draft. (I don't think he would have done that if he had had much faith in Carmazzi.)

Maybe a crash course in phonics? I understand they do wonders for problem readers.
