Oh, that miserable, cold, foggy afternoon in Chicago when a camera shot of the field offered visability to about midfield. That is a nice memory. That game made a mockery of the finesse label. My heart wells up with pride.
Did anone see NFL Highlights' Super Bowl XIX (49ers v. Dolphins at Stanford) on ESPN2 last night? It seems to me that the 49ers excell in the fog. Appropriate for the team from the City by The Bay. One observation - Roger Craig was an incredible receiver out of the backfield. His one handed grabs were incredible.
Win: Aside from late last Sunday and late in the Raiders game earlier this season (when the 49ers strayed from the WCO and went to the wide open, no-huddle offense)...in other words, 98% of the season...would you rate Garcia's performance in the West Coast offense comparable to that of a Steve Bono or Elvis Grbac?
FYI: Bono led Chiefs to 13-3 record in 1995 (520 Att., 293 Comp., 56.3%, 3,121 yards, 6.00 YPA, 21 TD, 10 INT, 79.5 QB rating).
Compare to Garcia in 2002 (528 Att., 328 Comp., 62.1%, 3,344 yards, 6.3 YPA, 21 TD, 10 INT, 85.6 QB Rating). Basically, the difference being Garcia completed 2 more passes a game.
Yikes!
Bono saw meaningful time only twice in San Francisco (1991 and 1992). In '91 he completed 59.5 percent of his passes, averaged 6.82 per attempt, and had a QB rating of 88.5. In '92, Bono completed 64.3 percent of his passes, averaged 8.27 per attempt, and had a QB rating of 87.1).
I am encouraged to learn that McFarland isn't playing. I am concerned about Tampa Bay's defense or special teams scoring on us. Otherwise, I think Bryan is correct...Mora sits in a nickel defense and challenges the Bucs' to run. If Parrish can wrap up, he is like a linebacker (see Tim McDonald). I think we can keep the Bucs offense to less that 20 points if we can get the defense off the field and force some punts. Turnovers would be great, but I don't bank on Johnson throwing 4 INT's. Not with Jon Gruden pullng the levers. We only forced two first half punts last week...we need to do a much better job at that.
Tagliabue is buckling to the New York media. If Fox detracts from this weekends game by rehashing last weekend's miscues, I will be extremely disappointed. Collingsworth and Bradshaw need to move on.
I know as a Sacramento Kings fan that agonized through the Lakers playoff series last year, this thing with the officials needs to be put to rest. As the talk continued through to the Lakers-Nets championship series, the New York media became very critical of the Kings' (and Kings fans) whining. To the Kings belly-aching they would say, "stop blaming the officials...make the free throws and you win." It is time for them to take their words to heart. To the New York belly-achers I say, "Shut up already! Shockey makes the catch in the end zone, or your kicker makes the field goals, you win..."
It is a good thing this weekends game isn't at Candestick Point 'cause it is a wet and muddy weekend here. I can't wait to get that fireplace roaring Sunday morning. This is shaping up as a potentially great day of football viewing.
I must say, I do hope New York's Jets fans have something to cheer about later in the day.
Does anyone really care about watching the Pittsburg-Tennessee game?
