I just read in my morning paper that Kerry Collins passed for 342 yards against the 49ers in Week 1. He has three career 300-yard games against the 49ers, his most against any club. Don't forget: Collins' Week 1 yardage was amassed against a healthy Webster, Parrish and Winborn. Ouch!
Trev and UK: Where Garcia ranks among the league's QB's depends on which Jeff Garcia we are talking about. I would rank Garcia 2000 as one of the top four QB's in the league. I would rank Garcia 2001 as one of the top 5. I would have to put Garcia 2002 (the current version) 8th or 9th, overall, in the NFL. Let's face it, Garcia threw 9 fewer TD's, and thats got to account for something.
Likewise, it matters which Kerry Collins you are talking about. This 2002 Collins passed for over 4,000 yards. I remember how special it was when Garcia did that in 2000, so whatever your pre-conceived notions about Collins may have been, it is time to re-adjust your expectations.
Trev: You argue that Collins has "horrible mechanics"...as if Garcia doesn't? While watching Pennington carve up the Colts yesterday, all I we heard from the announcers was glowing appraisal of him setting his feet and beautiful follow through. And, I thought to myself, what would they think about Garcia's? Whatever fault you find with Collins' "crazy wind-up motion," it is no less effective than Garcia unconventional "hop-skip-jump" motion. Collins may have lead feet, but he sheds would-be tacklers like a Cuttlefish changes colors.
greg posts an interesting -- Owens is twice the big play threat that Toomer is, but Toomer netted 42 more yards on 18 fewer receptions. I would imagine that Owens has better YAC stats, so that just goes to show how much shorter the 49ers' routes and passes are.
I hope there isn't some kind of "New York football teams karma-thing" going on. Whatever stars were in alignment better re-align in favor of the 49ers.
Mariucci did the right thing by firing his aggressive agent last year, and this sent a message to the front office that he wants to stay in San Francisco. Now he needs to take the next step and fire Gregg Knapp...that will send a message to Terrell Owens that he intends to open up the offense next year.
If Donahue lands a receiving threat in the first tow rounds or free agency, all will be well with the offense. Oh yeah, and let Barlow start! Hearst's career is winding down...
What to expect: The Giants have only given up 1 TD in the first quarter all season. They have given up the third fewest points in the NFL this season.
I would love to see the Niners score on their first two possessions...but htat seems highly unlikely. Oh well, I predict they score twice in the first half and lead at half-time.
GO 49ERS!
