Subject: Eating Crow...

WOW!!!! What a game! Don't tell me some of you aren't eating crow right now. Even I am working some down with my beer right now. Garcia and the offensive line showed tremendous heart. The 49ers were down 24-14 at half, and none of it was because of offensive play calling. yes, we ran on 2nd and ten, but so did the Giants!!! Did you fail to notice that?

Collins and Toomer are leathal...and Collins doesn't have a very good #2WR, either...but he has Shockey. Eric Johnson isn't Shockey, but he is clutch. Oh, it was so sweet to see Shockey lose his cool...come to think of it, several Giants lost their cool...FIRE FASSEL!!!!

As good as Toomer is, Ahmed Plummer showed that our "shut down" corner isn't a "shut down" corner. Fortunately, I think he matches up okay with Keyshawn and Rob Johnson (is Brad still out?). Hey, Mike Rumph deserves some credit today. He was sticking guys, made a great effort on a ball that Shockey caught. That was a ballsy move. He didn't get it, but I liked seeing him be that aggressive.

This defense showed up in the end, but they couldn't force a second punt in the first half. Everyone wants to see good coaching...well, Mora made an adjustment and was successful. Where is all the applause he deserves?

Our offense couldn't sustain a drive so the coaches made a halftime adjustment...there it is Whiners, the coaching you love to criticize. No huddle...use Johnson and Streets, put owens in motion, or line him up in the slot. Again, the coaching was there...the aggressive going for it on fourth down...the trick play...where is the applause?

I have to reiterate, our o-line did a spectacular job in pass protection, but they were dominated on short yardage situations. What happened to Kevan Barlow in the second quarter...he disappeared? Is he injured? He is a threat (and Hearst obviously no longer is).

I loved seeing Owens on the sideline telling Garcia and Streets that we could still win. I wish Garcia as the QB was giving that lecture, but that is a bit nit-picky after an incredible win. I get frustrated with Owens stupid, lose your head antics that nearly cost valuable field position. He also dropped a pass with a one handed stab at the most crucial juncture.

Take heart, we nearly lost because of defense and special teams (down 24-14 and none of it had to do with Mariucci's playcalling), but we won because the Giants' defense couldn't get pressure and their nickel back is weak (sound familiar?), AND their front office is slightly less interested in special teams than our front office.

I think we can build on this. The coaches kept their team in the right frame of mind. They made the adjustments. They put the ball in the right hands. Their critics need to take a cold shower and get a fresh perspective.

Get Jason Webster healthy. Bring on Gruden! Go NINERS!

just like old times...
