My impressions of the game.
49ers offense was doing well, but defense was stumbling at the beginning. When the game was tied 14-14 I thought that reflected the strengths of the two teams.
Then the 49er defense stepped up and stopped the Giants forcing a 4th and 17 punt. Here was the chance for the offense to make a statement and take control of the game.
But - oh,no - Wilson fumbles the ball, and worst yet the Giants march in to score. This was the first turning point of the game as the Giants proceeded to annihilate the 49ers scoring 17 more unanswered points to take a 38-14 lead. Time to compose a letter to John York about firing Mooch and replacing Garcia, but I am a loyal fan so I guess I'll stay to the end of the game!
Suddenly, a turning point - Mariucci lets Garcia loose. The difference is so profound that it seems to me Mariucci might want to consider adapting his game plan to Garcia's predilections instead of what seems to make sense. Notice how when Garcia is hitting on all cylinders the receivers start getting their head into the game -- and then even the rushing plays seem to work better. (Have I heard this before: the passing game sets up the running game???? Long ago, far away, many years ago?) Lo and behold two 49er touchdowns WITH matching two point conversions.
Meanwhile the defense responds to the offensive success (perhaps because they actually can catch their breath on the sidelines for a change) Suddenly, the Giants offense is not as effective.
The 49ers slow down a little and have to settle for a field goal, but the defense holds again, and TOUCHDOWN 49ers!
Now the kickoff, and ... and ... and special teams give the ball to the Giants near midfield. Are the 49er special teamers really as bad as they sometimes play?
Momentum back to the Giants. The 49er defense can't stop them now. The Giants take it downfield. They are in field goal range. They kick it on third down, so if there is some kind of muff they will even have a second chance. Giants easily win... but wait. What's this? They blew the snap. And - they didn't spike the ball. And they had five of their ineligible players ridiculously running downfield for who knows why? So when the 49ers blunder and commit pass interference which would have salvaged the Giants game, it was done against an ineligible player.
What a circus. What dumb luck! How unbelievable. And ... the 49ers win!
Was this game just a crazy fluke or do the 49ers actually have a chance next week? Well, Green Bay was upset, the Jets made Indianapolis look like the Bengals, and Cleveland almost upset the Steelers. So anything can happen in this wacky season. But those drives by Garcia were no fluke. They kind of reminded me of an offense the 49ers used to play. Perhaps you've heard of it - it was called the West Coast Offense!
I hope Webster is back next week! They are going to need him.
